West Seattle, Washington
28 Monday
The photo is from a reader, who explains: “This bike has been in the bushes where 35th meets Marine View Drive, just north of Seola Park.” Recognize it? Let us know.
Three more cases in West Seattle Crime Watch:
EARLY-MORNING ROBBERY: We asked police about a robbery call early this morning in the 8100 block of 24th SW. The report says the victim walked outside his house around 3:40 am and was approached by someone who “demanded money and struck the victim in the head.” The robber took “an unknown amount of money from the victim, kicked him, and ran away.” Police searched, with a K9 team, but didn’t find the robber; the victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
PURSE THEFT: Tara reports that around noon today, her purse was taken from an outdoor workout room in the 3300 block of 59th SW. It’s described as a “small black leather long shoulder-strap purse” containing “a pink leather wallet with driver’s license, bank cards,” and cash.
ALKI ARREST: Another case from Alki – we found this one after noticing a familiar name on the jail register. 25-year-old Nickolas Osborne is the man arrested by police back in July for an Alki stabbing death a year earlier, but not charged (as explained here). He has been in jail for two weeks, charged with criminal trespassing, because of an incident in which he showed up outside an Alki residence and insisted he had to be allowed inside to get his things. But he had never lived or even visited there. The resident told police this wasn’t the first time he showed up at the house; she and her boyfriend tried to get him to leave but he wouldn’t. Police were finally called. He continued refusing to leave; they arrested him. His bail is set at $3,000 and he’s been through a mental-health assessment, with a competency hearing scheduled tomorrow. As noted in our summer coverage of the stabbing case, Osborne’s record includes a case from March of last year, in which he set an SPD car on fire while Southwest Precinct officers were taking him to jail for allegedly harassing Lincoln Park/Lowman Beach visitors.
Lot of questions about a police response at an apartment building on SW Avalon Way near 35th. We went over to ask. It was a domestic-violence situation, police told us. Seattle Fire was called in to help them gain entry to a unit – that’s why SFD was there but no callout was shown on the Real-Time 911 log. (added) One person was arrested.
From Shilei: “My longboard was stolen this morning near the bike path at the intersection of Alki Ave. SW and 57th Ave. SW. I parked the board near at the edge of the concrete/sand and walked toward the water for 10 minutes. I was within view and within 30 ft of the board at all times. When I returned, the board was gone. I’ve filed a police report, tracking number T19009011.” No photo but it looks like this – with “yellow wheels and different trucks set up for downhill.”
One West Seattle Crime Watch reader report so far today:
GARAGE BURGLAR STEALS BICYCLE: That’s Jake‘s bicycle, stolen from his condo building’s garage in The Junction early this morning. He also sent this security-camera photo of the burglar:
Jake reports, “Suspect is an early 20s Hispanic male, average build, last seen wearing a black hoodie, gray pants or jeans, black shoes, and heading north on 41st with a stolen bike and bike pump. … Bike has a damaged front tire so may have been dumped in the bushes before making it out of West Seattle.” A police report has been filed.
Julia is asking for your help in finding two of the three vehicles in the photo, both stolen – though from different locations. The white 1997 Chevrolet G2300 van in the background, with the Sound Carpentry logo, was stolen early Friday from the 9700 block of 32nd SW. A phone in the vehicle last pinged from 35th SW and SW Cambridge. Meantime, the taupe SUV also is missing, stolen in Burien, she says. Call 911 if you see either one.
Thanks to everybody who asked about a police response at 40th/Edmunds around 4:30 am. Here’s what we’ve been able to find out: It involved a cell phone stolen in the West Precinct area earlier in the morning. Police say the suspect, a 28-year-old woman, tried to flee, but was taken into custody. Another 28-year-old woman was also arrested in connection with the case. The jail register shows both are being held for investigation of assault; one has arrest warrants for failure to appear in other cases including DUI, property destruction, and reckless driving.
4:26 PM: Two West Seattle Crime Watch cases to report:
PROWLING SUSPECTS ARRESTED: Thanks to everybody who texted about a police/fire response in an alley near 46th and Edmunds this afternoon. We went over to check it out; police told us they responded to a report of two people prowling back yards, and after they found both suspects, learned they both had arrest warrants. No further details available yet, and we’re still trying to find out about the SFD component of the call; a neighbor said someone was taken away by private ambulance.
ANOTHER DRUG RAID: Posted on SPD Blotter this afternoon:
SPD investigators seized a handgun and large amounts of cash, meth, cocaine, pills, and heroin after serving a warrant at a West Seattle home on Saturday.
Around 5:30 PM on Saturday, members of the West Precinct Anti-Crime Team and SPD Narcotics Unit, with the assistance of the Drug Enforcement Administration, served a warrant at the apartment of a 52-year-old man in the 900 block of SW Holden Street.
There, police found 1,455 grams of methamphetamine, 53 grams of cocaine, 41 grams of oxycodone pills and 229 grams of black tar heroin, which was in the suspect’s freezer.
Police also found a 9mm handgun and $39,000 in cash in the home.
Officers seized the gun, cash, and narcotics, and provided food and water for a cat in the apartment before securing the unit and leaving the scene.
The 52-year-old suspect — who was arrested for domestic violence the day before police served a warrant at his apartment and is also on federal probation — is currently being held at the King County Jail.
We’re checking on the suspect’s status.
4:45 PM UPDATE: The suspect, 52-year-old Donald C. Scholoff, remains in jail and is already charged in the domestic-violence case. Charging documents say that last Friday, he tried to strangle his girlfriend, and then she tried to flee on a bicycle, he drove a car after her and smashed it into her bike; she leaped off it just in time. The documents say the “federal probation” is for a drug-dealing conviction in 2016 and also note that he has a record including robbery, theft, and drug convictions.
An unusual note from the court documents: Prosecutors wrote in the charging papers that they disagreed with District Court Judge Pro Tem Catherine McDowell‘s original decision to set bail at $50,000; they wanted it three times higher. No indication if that happened, but the jail register now shows Scholoff is being held without bail.
Three notes tonight in West Seattle Crime Watch:
GUNFIRE REPORT INVESTIGATED: We just went over to South Delridge to investigate a report of police investigating possible drive-by gunfire. We found officers near 16th and Cambridge; they told us they had not found any evidence of gunfire so far – no shell casings, property damage, and/or victim(s). ADDED: A texter, however, reported three casings. We’ll check for the report in the morning.
DRUG SUSPECT OUT: Thanks to the tipster who spotted this even before we made our nightly jail-register check. One day after being charged, High Point drug suspect Richard S. Schaan is out of jail. He posted bond tonight on $50,000 bail.
WEEKEND MYSTERY SOLVED: On Saturday night, we got a few tips about police searching parts of Gatewood and Sunrise Heights with a K9 team. We spotted them on SW Thistle but despite driving several blocks in areas where the tipsters had seen police, we never found the original scene.
No related call turned up on Tweets by Beat, either. But an emailed question on Sunday finally revealed the original scene, and we were able to find out from SPD today that it was a case of domestic violence – those are usually kept off the public logs. The suspect they were seeking was finally found and arrested in White Center and booked into jail.
Four notes in West Seattle Crime Watch:
DRUG SUSPECT CHARGED: Continuing to follow up on the search warrant and arrest in High Point last week, we have charging documents from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, filed today. 47-year-old Richard S. Schaan is charged with two drug felonies. He remains in the King County Jail, bail set at $50,000, with an arraignment hearing scheduled October 7th. (The photo at right is from the Department of Corrections, which had it on record from time he served in 2010.)
BACKYARD BREAK-IN: From Laura near 22nd/Barton:
Back yard was broken into (Sunday) evening around 7 pm. We believe this is Jessica Detrick based on neighbors recognizing her from past incidents.
The dog is the giveaway here, as compared to past coverage here.
SOMEWHERE THERE’S A BAREFOOT TRESPASSER: Ashley southwest of The Junction wondered if this somehow connects to anything else nearby:
We woke up to these shoes under our patio table and clearly this person sat at the table for a while. Haven’t noticed anything missing. I wanted to let you know to see if anything happened to those around us. We live off Dawson and 47th.
BLOCKWATCH CAPTAINS NETWORK TOMORROW: You don’t have to be a captain or even in a Block Watch at all to attend – all are welcome at Tuesday’s meeting, 6:30 pm at the Southwest Precinct (2300 SW Webster), featuring a guest from the city’s 911 center.
Reader report: “My e-bike was stolen from 34th and Manning last night or today. I just noticed (this afternoon) it was gone and used it last night. It’s an IZIP and has two belts.”
The security-camera image is from Cheryl in High Point, who says the person “tried our door and a lock box on our house. He only ran away when we talked to him through the camera.” it happened shortly after 5:11 am near the north end of Walt Hundley Playfield.
(Reader photo from early Thursday)
One day after Seattle Police announced the arrest of a 47-year-old man during a search-warrant operation that netted heroin, meth, and fentanyl, a judge set bail for the suspect at $50,000. He remains in jail at last check. According to probable-cause documents for his hearing, The documents say a two-month Major Crimes Task Force investigation preceded the arrest. The suspect is alleged to have been dealing drugs from the Stewart Manor building at 6339 34th SW (though the police report lists him with an address in Snoqualmie). Detectives say they also observed him selling drugs from his 1984 Ford Ranger, and say he also owns a 1996 Honda Accord. They got a search warrant and brought along SWAT to serve it at 5:30 am Thursday. They didn’t find anyone in the apartment for which they had a search warrant, but found suspected heroin and fentanyl as well as paraphernalia, baggies, and scales. While the search continued, they learned the suspect was seen parking his Accord nearby, and police were able to arrest him. Inside his car, they found a “purple Crown Royal bag” that the probable-cause document says contained “a large tennis ball size ball of suspected heroin, a plastic baggie containing a crystal-like substance (suspected methamphetamine), multiple empty plastic baggies (commonly used to store and sell narcotics), scale, marijuana, and multiple hypodermic needles.” The report says the suspect later told police “he sometimes purchases and sells narcotics for his friends but that he doesn’t do it to make money.” Later testing indicated the items found tested positive for the suspected substances. The narrative concludes by describing the suspect as “a 7-time convicted felon with three convictions for VUCSA” (Violation of the Uniform Controlled Substances Act). He is scheduled to return to court on Monday.
(Added: Reader photo from early this morning)
We got a few questions today about what appeared to be a warrant service in High Point early this morning. Tonight this SPD post confirms that’s indeed what it was:
Major Crimes Task Force Detectives are making our neighborhoods safer by seizing heroin, methampheatmine, and fentanyl from a suspected drug dealer.
During the course of an ongoing criminal investigation, and with the assistance of SWAT officers, Major Crimes Task Force detectives served a search warrant this morning in the 6300 block of 34th Avenue SW.
Officers arrested their target, a 47-year-old man, and booked him into King County Jail.
In addition to securing a bottle of liquid fentanyl, detectives collected 64.7 grams of heroin and 5.7 grams of methamphetamine.
This remains an active and ongoing criminal investigation.
The suspect remains in jail. We’re looking into his record.
From Carole:
My neighbor’s car was stolen from our condo garage, 3700 block of California, on Monday 9/16. Sometime between 3 pm and 1:30 am. 2006 teal Acura TSX, license AMR3549. Decal on back: “Any functioning adult 2020.” She asks that you please post on the blog in case anyone sees it.
If you see it, please call 911 (and then let us know!).
In West Seattle Crime Watch, two incidents, plus reminders:
WATER-COOLER BURGLAR: From the police report files, a burglary in the 3300 block of 31st SW on Saturday morning:
(Victim) states he was in bed when he heard his back door open. (Victim) states he had left it unlocked and was staying in the basement due to renovations of the residence. (Burglar) stuck his head in the open door and when (Victim) yelled out, (suspect) fled in unknown direction.
(Victim) states a 5 gallon water cooler was on the table next to the door (suspect) opened and is now missing.
Police searched the area but didn’t find anyone.
PORCH TAMPERING: The video is from Brandon near 35th/Alaska:
This guy was at my door, went through my mailbox, then took apart my device. He never came into the home as far as I can tell.
MEETING REMINDERS: As featured in today’s highlights, West Seattle Crime Prevention Council at 7 pm tonight; then on Saturday, the kickoff for Paws on Patrol, 10 am. Both are at the Southwest Precinct (2300 SW Webster).
From Angie:
My parked car was hit (Sunday) while I was at work in West Seattle. It was hit on Glenn and Oregon. According to a neighbor who walking their dog around 2 pm, it was like this.
It happened between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. Maybe someone saw something and could help find the person responsible for damaging my car.
The report and videos are from Michael in Arbor Heights:
Caught this guy on our Nest camera stealing a package from our neighbor’s porch (Friday) at 2:15 PM in a fancy newer-style gray Ford truck. I’ve attached two separate videos, one showing the truck drive into frame, one showing the theft take place. Neighbor has or will be reporting to police. This happened on 32nd Ave SW in between 106th and 105th in Arbor Heights.
Hopefully someone will recognize the truck. Perpetrator was a white male, stocky, bald.
MBL also says social-media discussion of his clips yielded an opinion that it could be the same person/truck shown in this video from last month, recorded by a witness as a woman tried to stop a truck after her purse had been stolen from her car outside Admiral Safeway.
Two notes in West Seattle Crime Watch tonight:
ROCK SUSPECT OUT: The 18-year-old arrested for throwing three rocks through the windows of Whisky West on Sunday night while customers were in the restaurant/bar got out of jail tonight. The register notation says he was given a conditional release on his warrant for a 2018 “disorderly conduct” case in Kent as well as on this arrest.
BUSINESS VANDALISM: The latest local business reporting vandalism is My Family Doctor (3623 SW Alaska):
Dr. Terrill Harrington says via email, “My office was vandalized last night with damage to our tree pots.”
In West Seattle Crime Watch this afternoon:
(Reader photo from Sunday night)
WHISKY WEST ROCK SUSPECT UPDATE: The man arrested for throwing three rocks through the Morgan Junction restaurant’s windows Sunday night (as first reported here Monday) had a bail hearing this afternoon. Police documents say he’s 18 but he’s listed as 19 on the jail register, which shows conditional release granted for this case – pending a potential charge of malicious mischief – but $5,100 bail set on a failure-to-appear warrant for a disorderly-conduct case last year in Kent, so he’s still in jail. Other than that case, the only record shown for him is another Kent Municipal Court case from earlier last year, no details available.
MAILBOXES TARGETED: The photo and report are from RW on 31st SW:
This morning we discovered that someone tried to break in to the postal-supplied mail boxes on 31st and Findlay overnight. They succeeded with one. Looks like they tried to pull the other two off of the supports but weren’t successful. The post office says they no longer replace them and that there is a waiting list for PO boxes. It takes 30 days to repair locks if that will work. They had no response when I asked could we mount individual boxes in front of our homes. I have lived at this address 31 years. Never have we had this problem.
REMINDER: Bring your neighborhood crime concerns/questions to the West Seattle Crime Prevention Council‘s first post-summer-hiatus meeting next Tuesday (September 17th), 7 pm, Southwest Precinct (2300 SW Webster). Besides hearing from/talking with local police, you will also get info about ID theft from a consumer-protection specialist with the state Attorney General’s Office.
Multiple texters report gunfire heard less than an hour ago in east West Seattle, from Westwood to Highland Park. No gunshot victims reported anywhere, so far, and we haven’t heard any radio discussion of evidence found.
An urgent alert just in from Seal Sitters Marine Mammal Stranding Network:
Seal Sitters is suspending its canister collection program immediately. There has been a rash of canister thefts this month; we believe that thieves are putting the canisters in other businesses and collecting the money for themselves. If your business currently has a Seal Sitters canister, please remove it from your counter and call our hotline at 206-905-SEAL.
Thank you to everyone who dropped a few coins (or many) into the canisters over the years. Seal Sitters depends on contributions to further our educational outreach and help protect marine life. The canisters may be gone, but you can still donate by going to sealsitters.org/you_can_help/donate.html
Seal Sitters also thanks these businesses that have sponsored our program: Coastal Surf Boutique, Easy Street Records, El Chupacabra, Elliott Bay Brewing, Fatburger, Husky Deli, M2S and Alki Kayak, Merryweather Books, Next to Nature, Pegasus Book Exchange, Pegasus Pizza & Pasta, Tiffany’s Hair Design, Tully’s Coffee, and Wild Birds Unlimited.
Another case of someone throwing rock(s) through a business window – but this one happened while the business was open and customers were inside. Andria sent the photo and report:
Our moms group met up at Whisky West last night around 7:15, and shortly after a young guy came up to the bar and started baseball pitching bricks and big rocks through the windows. We all had to crawl and shelter behind the bar until it stopped. He was then chased my samaritans across the street where he was pictured diving into an open window in the round apartments. Police came and surrounded the building until they finally found and arrested him. Everyone was ok inside the bar, except a girl who sprained her ankle jumping over a railing to take cover.
After getting her report, we requested the police narrative. It confirms that the suspect was arrested, found in the Cal-Mor Circle apartment into which he “dove.” We haven’t been able to find out more about his current status yet. The report says three rocks were thrown. The officer who wrote the report added, “Several witnesses were reportedly injured as a result of this incident. One such witness … advised that she thought somebody was firing a weapon into the restaurant when she tried to seek shelter by diving off of a platform and over a banister. … reported a right ankle injury and SFD was notified. She was treated and released at the scene. Additional witnesses were sitting near the window when it was shattered and reported having glass in their faces but those witnesses left the scene prior to me confirming which witness sustained what injury.”
ADDED TUESDAY: As noted in comments, the suspect is 18 years old and remains in jail.
