Three notes in West Seattle Crime Watch tonight:
POLICE AT LINCOLN PARK: If you were at, or passing, Lincoln Park early this evening, you might have seen the big police response in the north parking lot. We went to the scene after several tips and found out that it basically wasn’t as big a deal as it looked, and did NOT involve any kind of crime happening in the park. Following up with Southwest Precinct Lt. Alan Williams, he said it started with police finding a vehicle in Lincoln Park that resembled one being sought in connection with an unspecified incident in the unincorporated King County area, but in the end, Lt. Williams says, “We detained and identified three individuals, then released them after discussing the situation with County.”
Now, two updates on cases we’ve been following:
CHARGES IN 17TH/CAMBRIDGE CRASH: 26-year-old Kalameu Paulo of Seatac is charged with two counts of vehicular assault and one count of felony hit-and-run in connection with the Sunday morning crash that seriously injured two people. Court documents tell the same story reported here in our Tuesday followup – that she allegedly ran a stop sign and T-boned the victims’ car, then was caught running away from the scene. She was described as showing signs of intoxication, and the court documents add the additional detail of a witness saying she had seen Paulo at the Locker Room bar in White Center earlier in the evening, appearing “particularly drunk.” The documents say alcohol/drug test results are not back yet. Her bail remains at $75,000.
ALAN POLEVIA CHARGED: Bail also remains set at $75,000 for 32-year-old Alan Polevia, now charged with second-degree burglary in connection with the incident for which he was arrested Monday afternoon, less than 24 hours after being released from a jail stay that began with an Arbor Heights arrest on June 11th. As reported here last night, police say he broke into a home in the 10000 block of 28th SW, and was arrested shortly thereafter. But there’s a new detail in court documents: While, as reported here, he was allowed to leave jail previously with a condition that he would be living at a Burien address where his father allegedly lived, we now learn he told police after the arrest Monday that he does not know where his father lives now, and had instead been picked up from jail by a girlfriend who took him to her house. Prosecutors asked the judge today to keep bail at $75,000 because out of 12 cases against Polevia in the past 12 years, 10 of them have resulted in warrants.
The court documents reveal that the “vacant” home Polevia allegedly broke into is the home damaged in a fire we covered last month for our partner site White Center Now. Court documents say he denied to police that he had broken into the house and said he had gone there because “some guy” told him he might find some coins there.
This afternoon’s other bail hearing of West Seattle note was for the 26-year-old Seatac woman who police say was driving the van that hit a car in South Delridge early Sunday, sending two people to the hospital with serious injuries. Until today, her name wasn’t on the jail register because, police said, she did not have ID and they had trouble verifying who she was; she is listed as having two aliases (we aren’t identifying her until and unless she is charged). The police narrative says she was one of two people seen running across Delridge by police arriving at the scene; nearby residents told them she was the driver. While one officer was trying to get identification from her, the documents say, she started screaming, “I killed him! I killed him! I’ve never killed anyone before.” Police later were told that, before the crash, she was seen and heard “at a gas station just across the county line … in White Center … physically fighting with two males,” and that when those two drove away, northbound into Seattle, the van driver “drove after them at a high rate of speed in an attempt to continue the fight.” Driving northbound on 17th SW, police say, she ran a stop sign and smashed into the smaller car. One of the officers who talked with her reported “a strong odor of alcoholic intoxicants” on her breath, and that she “was also slurring her speech.” Her bail was set today at $75,000, and she is due back in court tomorrow.
Just in from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office: One day after his arrest less than 24 hours after he was released from jail, Alan Polevia has just appeared at a bail hearing. His bail was set at $75,000. And we’ve confirmed that he was the person arrested in the Seola/Shorewood area at midday yesterday. We received some details of the incident from King County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Kathleen Larson. She says the break-in was in the 10000 block of 28th SW – a vacant home whose owner was checking the property and discovered a door had been pried open, and a bag “filled with property” was in the back yard. He then saw a man come out of the hedge; the property owner followed him, while calling 911. Deputies brought a K-9 team and set up containment; eventually they found him in the woods, she said – up in a tree. He’s due back in court tomorrow.
That’s Caleb‘s drum set- stolen from the storage unit of his apartment building in the 5000 block of California SW (just south of The Junction) sometime Monday. He and one of his neighbors, Yolanda, e-mailed us early today about the break-in with multiple victims. She said storage units had been broken into and ransacked, with “random valuables” taken. Among the stolen items, Caleb lost his “C&C custom Mahogany drum set, my cymbals, and all my hardware.” He believes it happened between noon and 1:30 pm Monday: “My downstairs neighbor went for a walk around that time and came back to (find the) storage-room door broken open. I’m pretty sure they moved it though the back alley behind my building because I found one of my drum pads back there. Maybe somebody saw something?” The door was locked, Yolanda said, but apparently yielded to being kicked in, and then the burglar(s) broke the locks off the storage units. Less than 24 hours after he got out on bail – as reported here last night – Alan Polevia is back in the King County Jail, for investigation of residential burglary, as of just before 3 pm. We just confirmed that via the jail register after getting a telephone tip. We had checked earlier on a King County Sheriff’s Office search in the Seola area; KCSO had no official information but area residents told us it all started with someone being spotted hopping a fence and running through back yards. We do not yet know if Polevia is linked to that but will update with whatever we find out about how he wound up back in jail.
1:08 PM TUESDAY, UPDATE: We still have not confirmed 100 percent that it’s the same incident, so that’ll have to wait until after his bail hearing at mid-afternoon. KCSO spokesperson Sgt. Kathleen Larson did confirm there was an arrest in the Seola-area case – a suspect (born the same year as Polevia, if somehow it turns out not to be him), finally cornered … in a tree.

12 days after his arrest in Arbor Heights, the latest in a series of incidents also including a March manhunt in Shorewood and a February escape from Harborview while handcuffed, repeat offender Alan Polevia is out of jail. We’ve been checking daily as promised but commenter Tophat Topcat spotted it first; the jail register shows Polevia posted bond and was released just after 4:30 pm. As reported here Thursday, his bail was down to $2,500 after he went to court Wednesday and had about $5,000 of bail reduced to “personal recognizance.” The $25,000 additional bail set after the arrest was dropped earlier – the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office told WSB a week ago it didn’t get evidence in time to “rush-file” a charge related to the June 11th arrest, though something’s still possible in the future. How far in the future, hard to say; the March charges he finally answered on Wednesday were filed six months after this West Seattle incident. The condition of his release in connection with that case is that he live at his father’s apartment in the 11900 block of 16th Ave. S. in Burien “for the duration of (the) case.”

They are also part of the kidnapping detail and we will learn more specifics about how to better protect your family and neighborhood from this threat.

Topping tonight’s West Seattle Crime Watch roundup – a hit-and-run at 56th/Alki tonight. Marty says he saw it from the deck at Duke’s:
White 4-door, late-model Cadillac (didn’t see driver) hit maroon Dodge Durango (east side of street) about 9:33 p.m., slamming it up across the sidewalk to within inches of the food truck in the Alki Auto Repair parking lot. Luckily, no one injured. Cadillac turned east onto 56th, presumably squirreled around neighborhood before finding exit up Admiral. A small black car gave chase; no word on whether it caught up w/the perp. Best of luck to SPD finding Caddy & driver.

Last night between 9:30pm and 6:00am this morning, someone came down onto my porch and cut my bike lock and stole my bike.

*WARNING* My house was broken into in the middle of the day on Friday (assume this means 6/14) probably around 11am-1pm. The thieves came in through a back window. They were probably on foot because they took things like all my jewelry, laptop, Xbox, etc. Nothing too big. BE CAREFUL & SAFE!
And Toby reports a car prowl in the 32nd/Barton vicinity:
Wanted to let everyone know and remind people to keep their doors locked and to not leave valuables in their car. Sadly we (re)learned the hard way. My girlfriend’s car was left unlocked last night and unfortunately she had forgotten her wallet in the glove box. It was gone this morning along with a Coach sun-glass case, some small bottles of perfume and a few other odds and ends. The wallet was also Coach, so if anyone happens to see any of the stuff (yeah right!), please let us know. Credit cards are cancelled, police have been notified. Overall not too terrible but there are better ways to start your day!
P.S. Our report on tonight’s West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting will be up overnight. No big news, though, but a couple updates as well as discussions of ongoing issues/cases.
4:26 PM: Just published on our partner site White Center Now: The King County Sheriff’s Office says a burglary attempt this past Sunday night might be linked to the attempted kidnapping two weeks ago. Both happened in the same block, 3rd/104th vicinity, and in both cases, fast-acting family members intervened. Here’s the newest story; here’s the previous story from early June. P.S. If you noticed helicopters in Arbor Heights/Shorewood/White Center this afternoon – those were TV choppers responding to this new information.

STOLEN CAR: Taylor asks you to keep an eye out for his girlfriend’s car, stolen last night on 10th SW in Highland Park. It’s a black 2000 Honda CR-V, with plates ending in WLO. Call 911 if you see it.
WEST SEATTLE CRIME PREVENTION COUNCIL: Since the WSCPC doesn’t meet in July and August, this is your last chance to get a guaranteed SPD audience for a neighborhood concern. In fact, that’s what tomorrow’s meeting will be devoted to, along with updates and followups (including a discussion of the recent Lincoln Park safety walk). 7 pm Tuesday (June 18th), Southwest Precinct – parking lot entrance is off Webster, west of Delridge Way.
Three West Seattle Crime Watch notes: First, a South Delridge domestic-violence call on Saturday afternoon almost turned into a SWAT standoff – we, in fact, were on the way to it after hearing word of a road closure, when the SWAT team was canceled after the suspect’s arrest. Police have published the story via SPD Blotter, including this photo of a hidden compartment in a sofa where they say they found the suspect hiding:
SPD also reports finding three guns in plain sight in the apartment – all pointed out by a 3-year-old girl who, along with a younger child, had been there when the victim was assaulted earlier. The suspect was booked into jail.

We would like to report two of our mountain bikes stolen from Verge Condos at 3213 Harbor Ave. SW sometime between 10:30 pm Friday night and 11:00 am Saturday morning. The bikes were stolen from our condo garage and the cable lock cut.

That was reported by Shyla, who said it was taken from her backyard on June 6th, near 39th/104th in Arbor Heights, and she adds: “In light of the most recent arrest of a guy just a few blocks away from our house I’m guessing there might be a connection. Would just like people to see the kart in case it shows up around the neighborhood or garage sales.”

We checked in at day’s end with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office regarding the status of Alan Polevia, the repeat offender arrested Tuesday (WSB coverage here), found hiding in an Arbor Heights crawl space. Spokesperson Ian Goodhew says they could not “rush-file” a charge related to that incident – as reported here Wednesday, a firearms charge was considered – because more investigation needs to be done by police. But Polevia does remain jailed in connection with the warrants that were out for his arrest – one in relation to him not showing up to answer burglary/theft charges filed in March (six months after the incident they relate to). Bottom line, according to the King County Jail Register, his bail is currently down to $7,550. But Goodhew says Polevia is expected to be in custody when he is arraigned on the aforementioned March charges on Wednesday, as well as an unrelated Municipal Court case. And they’re hopeful they’ll get the additional information soon for a filing decision in this week’s incident.
No injuries or arrests reported in a shots-fired incident tonight in the Ocean View area. So far the only official police information is from a tweet, but Tom has sent a firsthand report and photo of one of the casings found afterward:
At around 8:30 pm (tonight), a silver Acura Integra (with spoiler) stopped at the south end of 37th Ave SW where it meets 35th Ave SW. Inside the vehicle was a couple having a heated argument, drawing the attention of neighbors. They then continued north on 37th Ave SW and stopped a few houses south of the intersection of 37th Ave SW and SW Ocean View Drive where the argument continued and the male driver exited the vehicle and fired 7 shots in rapid succession into the air, leaving 9mm shell casings in the street. By this time the female was in the driver’s seat and noticed a neighbor looking out the window and warned the male to get back in the car, at which point they drove away from the scene eastbound on SW Ocean View Drive. SPD arrived and took statements including good descriptions of the 2 persons involved, and the car. No one was able to see the license plate.

One day after police arrested 32-year-old Alan Polevia in Arbor Heights, he remains jailed in lieu of $35,050 bail, and we have more information about what police found when they arrested him after rousting him from a hiding place. $10,050 of the bail is because of warrants that were out for Polevia’s arrest, including his failure to appear to answer charges of burglary and theft filed last March. Then a judge set $25,000 more bail at a hearing today, in connection with a possible firearms charge. We have obtained the probable-cause document in relation to that, and it outlines what we first reported yesterday – that he was spotted riding a bike with another one “attached” to it, and had multiple bags. An alert neighbor spotted him and called police to report suspicious behavior. Though that neighbor had lost track of him by the time police arrived, another one had seen him and taken photos of him and the bicycles; she helped police track him down at the house where he was eventually found “under the house, in the crawl space, under the flood wrap, in a small dug-out hole.” Those photos show him with the bags – in which police say they found:
*Carbon-loaded pellet gun
*2 fully loaded Glock 40-caliber magazines in a leather magazine holster (loaded with hollow-point bullets)
*132 Winchester Wildcat 22-caliber bullets
*8 Trapmax shotgun cartridges
*17 Peters brand 30=30 rifle rounds
King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office spokesperson Ian Goodhew tells WSB they have until Friday to decide whether to file new charges. He adds that Polevia will go before a judge in connection with the warrants, too, and says his office will argue for him to be kept in custody rather than released, given his history – even before the burglary/theft charges were filed last March (in connection with this September incident) he had been on the run after escaping from police at Harborview Medical Center while handcuffed.
The “snack shack” used by West Seattle Baseball at Riverview Playfield has been broken into, reports parent volunteer Michelle, who sent the photo. She says someone broke in Monday night, “damaging the building and making a huge mess” along with making off with some money. “We are so bummed someone would do this. … Fortunately it’s the end of the season, and not more was taken.” It’s not the first time the “shack” has been targeted, though; Michelle says volunteers have spent time painting over graffiti vandalism.

ORIGINAL REPORT, 3:02 PM: We’re still trying to sort out exactly what’s happening with a big police response in the 32nd/106th area of Arbor Heights. Radio communications indicate it’s a search for a burglary suspect. More as we get it.
3:26 PM UPDATE: The original scene is now clear – but we’re checking out another address where a suspect may have been spotted, in the 32nd/105th area.
3:37 PM UPDATE: … and we’ve found the police all back at the original house, where the suspect might be hiding. So this remains an active investigation, but focused at the moment on one particular location.
4:03 PM UPDATE: Police are focused on the back yard of a house at 32nd and 106th; they have a K-9 team, too.
4:19 PM UPDATE: Co-publisher Patrick Sand has spoken at the scene with SW Precinct Lt. Ron Smith (photo above, in blue). He says this was called in as “suspicious circumstances” – a man was spotted riding a bicycle, towing another bicycle, in possession of two backpacks. More tactical police reinforcements have arrived. Lt. Smith also confirmed they believe the suspect is 32-year-old Alan Polevia (we had heard the name on the scanner but wanted to confirm before publishing) – target of a search in Shorewood earlier this year, and prior to that, known for escaping from custody at Harborview while in handcuffs.
4:33 PM UPDATE: Suspect is out and in handcuffs.
5:24 PM UPDATE: We’re adding photos. Identity confirmed; police are checking on warrants. King County Jail records show Polevia spent three days in jail when finally arrested in late March, three weeks after the Shorewood search. On March 28th, he was charged with burglary and theft in connection with an incident that was reported here, involving a scooter taken in the 5000 block of 37th SW, and a search that eventually ended at 36th and Morgan. He didn’t appear for arraignment, so a warrant was issued for his arrest in April, according to court records.
8:57 PM UPDATE: Polevia is on the King County Jail Register as of about an hour ago, held on the aforementioned warrant and two others, as well as for investigation of unlawful firearm possession related to today’s events. This likely means he’ll have a bail hearing tomorrow; we’ll check with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in the morning. We have added one more photo, above, from this afternoon’s arrest.

Two days after two West Seattle women found a fellow runner unconscious, badly hurt, along the road through Fairmount Ravine, three updates, including an event planned to show support for the victim and for residents who have long been concerned about safety in that area:
THE VICTIM: The 54-year-old victim remains in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center, where she has been since Saturday; Harborview says she is in serious condition. As we first reported that morning, she was found on Fairmount Avenue, near the underside of the Admiral Way Bridge, around 7 am. Police suspect she was hit by a vehicle, or someone in or on a vehicle, but one thing known for sure – whomever did it, just left her there.
THE INVESTIGATION: We checked with SPD a short time ago; nothing new to announce, they tell us, but they want to renew this call:
Anyone with information about this incident or who may know the identity or whereabouts of the suspect, or if you saw any vehicle in that area between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. [Saturday 6/8] please call Detective Korner at (206) 684-8927. Anonymous tips are welcome.

THE RUN: The two Good Samaritans who found the victim have organized a community gathering and run for this Saturday morning to show support. Here’s the announcement from Athena Frederick and Julie Ambrose:
In light of the horrific event on Saturday, June 8th, we are hosting a Run to REFLECT….
We will meet at the bottom of Fairmount (on the Alki Beach side near Salty’s) starting at 6:30 am. Please bring some type of reflective gear, object, caution cone, etc. to donate (you may be able to retrieve it after Saturday, but not guaranteed). We will be placing these reflective items along the side of the road going up through Fairmount. Please feel free to bring them even earlier than 6:30am. Businesses that would like to donate any reflective type gear, please contact us. We are doing this to raise awareness over the weekend for drivers to SLOW DOWN on that stretch of road.
Starting at 7 am, we will run a 5K on Alki to show our support of the 54-year-old woman and her family. Please invite friends, family and join us to either “light up Fairmount” OR for the 5K run or walk. Hope to see you there and my thoughts & prayers go out to the victim and her family!!

An Admiral woman chased and caught a suspected bike thief this afternoon. We might not have known except for Mark L.‘s comment following the unrelated Crime Watch roundup we published earlier today:
Just heard that my neighbor chased a guy down the street who stole her husband’s bicycle. He doesn’t ride it much anyway, but regardless, they caught him! Guy was in his mid-50’s and he’s on his way to jail. He should’ve known better than to steal from a marathon runner!
We commented in turn that we’d love to find out more; another commenter put us in touch with the suspect-chaser, Sarah, who agreed to tell her story:
I run for sanity, for exercise also, but mostly sanity. Today’s run, however, was not really motivated by either of those.
Amidst loads of laundry and resume editing, what appeared to be a man walking in from the side alley caught my eye. Yep, there he goes, straight into the detached garage – that I left open. My kids will love that part.
White T-shirt in hand, I B-lined for the garage as a man in his late 40’s/early 50’s emerged with a bike in hand. Unsure of the extent of my rights to defend my property, I decided not to tackle the man. Although, I have to admit, as a psychotherapist and borderline pacifist, I tend to entertain all options prior to violence.
Our misguided friend proceeded to run with the bike down the alley until he likely realized the screaming woman following him was not going back into her house to call the police. The bike was ditched and the pursuit was on.
Multiple neighbors kindly responded to my pleas for a 911 call and I continued to follow the man through the Admiral neighborhood – of course, wondering what he must be feeling and what could possibly be going on in his life to make theft a viable choice. He asked me to stop following him. I explained that he should not have been in my garage. He told me his friend was now busy emptying out my house. I explained his friend had great company to welcome him: the SPD. He was welcome to run as long and far as he wanted, I had planned on 6 miles today but could probably do 12 if need be.
Fortunately, Officer Mulloy followed the multiple leads from helpful neighbors and intercepted us on Admiral just above Schmitz Park where the man was taken into custody. Bike is safe, I am safe, the laundry is done. I can’t say, though, what this will mean for the man who felt theft was his best option today. I do hope justice is restorative.
P.S. In a bit of synchronicity, passer-by Cami had noticed this incident unfolding and took the cameraphone photo above, sharing it with us with no knowledge this story was in the works! Meantime, we hope to be able to find out the suspect’s status tomorrow.
We start this West Seattle Crime Watch roundup with a busy week for burglars. Sixteen in the past week, according to the city crime-report map (three of the icons in the screengrab above represent two each). One of the victims is Lara – again:
I wanted to report that I was burglarized for the second time in 6 months (plus 3 additional thefts of plants, outdoor heaters, etc. from my yard.) I live near Graham and Fauntleroy and the break-in occurred at 3 pm (Wednesday). … This time, the perpetrator(s) kicked in my front door (which was dead bolted). It appears that they were trying to disassemble the entertainment center when the alarm went off. They grabbed my laptop, but that appears to be all they took. I’m very glad I put in an alarm system after the last burglary and I’m adding in the video cameras (today)!
It would be great to know if anybody on Fauntleroy (just south of the intersection at Graham) has an external facing camera that might have captured a truck parked out front (Wednesday) afternoon.

We’ve received a few questions about a reported kidnapping attempt in unincorporated King County, with a mom telling deputies she wrestled her 3-year-old away from a stranger last night in her own backyard. We spoke with the King County Sheriff’s Office about the case earlier today, and the story’s on our partner site White Center Now.

The city’s Precinct Advisory Councils are co-sponsoring a public-safety-focused mayoral forum at 10 am Saturday, June 22nd, at City Hall downtown; we received the announcement today from the Southwest PAC’s Pete Spalding. All are welcome, and while RSVPing isn’t mandatory, the co-sponsors are hoping to get an idea of turnout, so if you can RSVP to seattlecpac@gmail.com, please do. That’s also the e-mail address to which you can send suggested questions before the forum. Along with the PACs, the forum’s co-sponsors are City Councilmembers Tom Rasmussen and Tim Burgess (now a former mayoral candidate). It’ll be moderated by West Seattleite and journalist/broadcaster Brian Callanan of the Seattle Channel.
