4:55 PM: Police including SWAT officers are at Camp Second Chance, the tiny-house encampment on Myers Way in southeast West Seattle, right now. So far, all that police are saying is that it started as an attempt to make a felony warrant arrest. The suspect is holed up in one of the tiny houses and might be armed – which is why the SWAT team is there. No report of injuries. We’ll update when more information is available.
6:38 PM: Not resolved yet. Negotiators have been talking with the suspect by phone off and on.
6:45 PM: The suspect has emerged and is in custody.
9:09 PM: We’ve obtained the initial police summary of how this unfolded. The suspect, police say, was a former camp resident, kicked out for threatening other residents. Police were called when he showed back up at the camp, and after they arrived, he ran into his former tiny house. He refused to come out and threatened to try to provoke officers to kill him. Police “established probable cause for (his) arrest for investigation of Harassment, burglary, and a previously reported assault.” They called in negotiators to try to talk him out, and obtained a search warrant. He eventually surrendered and “was taken into custody without further issues.” He is 38 years old and currently in the King County Jail.

7:22 PM: A Seattle Fire “scenes of violence” response is headed to 30th/Roxbury after a report of gunfire, possibly a drive-by shooting that left cars damaged too. One person is reported injured. The Guardian One helicopter may be joining the search. More to come.
7:29 PM: Though SPD and SFD are assisting, most of this is unfolding on the county side of Roxbury. The vehicle description so far: Black Charger, last seen southbound on 30th. Guardian One is arriving in the area.
7:39 PM: Deputies have told dispatch that witnesses said two other people were shot but left the scene to go directly to a hospital. The victim who was at the scene when SFD medics arrived is being taken to Harborview. … At the scene, we’re told only that the victim is male. Meantime, Guardian One has moved on, as the shooter is believed to be long gone.

8 PM: Deputies tell us this all happened at the gas station. We’re checking on the victim’s condition; haven’t heard anything further about other possible victims. Traffic at the scene is back to normal now that the initially sizable SFD response has left.
8:19 PM: SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo tells WSB the victim taken to the hospital by their medics is 18 and was transported in stable condition.
ADDED 12:29 PM FRIDAY: KCSO spokesperson Sgt. Tim Meyer tells WSB that the investigation continues and “I am not aware of additional victims and know of no arrests.”
Two threat cases in West Seattle Crime Watch:
WESTWOOD VILLAGE THREAT: An incident last night involved a death threat, police say. Their initial report outlines the incident as follows: Just after 8 pm, one man approached another who appeared to be car-prowling in the parking lot near Rite Aid, following him into Ross and confronting him there. That led to the suspected car-prowler hitting the other man; a fight ensued, and police say, “the victim wrestled with the suspect until the suspect gave up. They went their separate ways. The victim encountered the suspect near MOD Pizza in the Westwood Village parking lot again. The victim said that the suspect punched him again and they started to wrestle. The suspect pulled out a firearm from his pocket and pointed it at the victim’s head. The suspect asked him if he wanted to ‘live or die.’ The suspect left the area.” No description in the report.
HARASSMENT SUSPECT CHARGED: Last week we reported on an incident on 53rd SW in which a suspect was subsequently arrested on Beach Drive. The suspect, 49-year-old Nathan R. Calvin, is now charged with one count of felony harassment. Charging documents say 911 was called on the afternoon of March 2nd about a man “walking through various residential back yards.” In one of those yards, a woman found him “carrying a green metal fence post” and lifting up a boat cover. She told him to stop and leave; he “became angry and started yelling at her and calling her names (and then) took the metal fence post and began swinging it like a baseball bat and told (the victim) that he was going to kill her.” She went back into her house and called 911. Officers found him down the hill. Calvin remains in jail, bail set at $5,000. Charging documents say he has a felony theft conviction and misdemeanor assault and harassment convictions, along with 21 warrants in 10 years, some from outside King County.

Two West Seattle Crime Watch reports so far today:
ARSON ALERT: Seattle Police are investigating small set fires early this morning on west Charlestown Hill. According to a preliminary summary from SPD, the first report was of someone “igniting a light pole on fire … Officers arrived on scene and observed some plastic and Styrofoam materials placed on a crosswalk sign that was scorched, but not on fire.” The caller had no description of the fire-setter Officers checking the area found trash containers on fire at 55th/Charlestown and 53rd/Charlestown; SFD was called to those scenes around 4:15 am. Officers weren’t able to find anyone in the area, but are hoping to examine residential security video that might have images of the arsonist.

TREE THEFT: Jessica says somebody dug up this dwarf lodgepole pine from her planting strip at 37th/Graham and took it away:
She explains, “It was yellow for the winter.” We asked if there’s any chance the recent gusty winds blew it down. “There is a decent-sized hole where it was with torn roots. It was too established to blow away. Someone yanked it out. I searched the surrounding blocks in case someone carried it a bit and threw it, but I didn’t have any luck.”
9:52 PM: Thanks for the texted tips. Police are searching for a suspect in Upper Morgan. We’re still trying to confirm exactly how this started – it broke out while we were out on the Shorewood crash. The suspect is described in part as male, 5’11”, short dark hair, a face mask, gray sweatshirt and sweat pants, “missing at least one shoe” according to archived radio traffic. K-9 is part of the search. We’ve been to the scene once but a sergeant had just arrived and hadn’t been briefed yet, so we’re going back for an update.
10:06 PM: The search is over; the suspect is in custody. Police tell us it was a domestic violence and burglary incident – he was wanted for breaking into his ex-partner’s residence and stealing some items.
SHOPLIFTING-TURNED-ROBBERY CASE: When a case of shoplifting – or other theft – turns violent or threatening, it becomes a robbery case. That’s what happened around 7 am today at the Westwood Village QFC. According to the preliminary police report, store security tried to stop a man who took items without paying; he punched a security guard in the face and left the store. Police found and arrested him nearby.
SUSPECT ACCUSED OF ASSAULTING OFFICERS: This happened Tuesday afternoon but it took us a while to get the report so we could follow up on the suspects’ status. Police arrested a man and woman suspected of breaking into a house in the 4100 block of 39th SW. They were both arrested nearby, reportedly after going into another house. After being detained, police say, the woman hit one officer in the face and kicked another in the groin, twice. Both suspects were taken to jail, where records show they were released one day later. Neither appears to have a record.
HATE-CRIME FOLLOWUP: We’ve answered several readers’ questions about a West Seattle case mentioned briefly in coverage of the recent police report that anti-Asian hate crimes are on the rise, so in case you wondered too: The case in which a suspect is reported to have told a woman “go back to your country” is this one, in which, as we reported in January, 35-year-old Lloyd C. Hill was charged with robbery and hate crime for a series of incidents on the east side of The Junction. Checking the case file today, we discovered that Hill was found incompetent last month and sent to Western State Hospital for up to 90 days in an attempt to restore competency so he can stand trial.

My silver ’94 Subaru Legacy was stolen from the street right in front of my house yesterday (while I was home working!) between the hours of 6 am and 3:30 pm (when I noticed it was gone).
The plate is #BON4428 and it was stolen from 15th Ave SW in-between SW Barton St and SW Henderson St. There is an Electrician Union sticker in the bottom right corner of the rear window.

I noticed my car was stolen this morning at 5:50 am. I last saw it at 6 pm last night.
It’s a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta GLS. Dark blue. Stick shift. Plate # APV8292. It’s the only car I’ve ever owned. I’ve had it for 20 years. I live in S. Delridge, next to the Police Station. It looks similar to this. Looks darker in cloudy weather. Looks similar even w/ door striping removed. Rear right light is busted; it’s a round crack.

Two police reports and three reader reports tonight in West Seattle Crime Watch:
ATTEMPTED BURGLARY: The first-draft police-report summary says this happened just after 6 pm in the 6400 block of 29th SW. The victim said two people had kicked in his door but fled when he confronted him. Officers found and detained two teenage boys. The investigation, says the report, revealed that “it appeared that they had been casing the residence, attempted the doorknob earlier in the day, and at the time of this call worked up the courage to try to force entry. They did not make entry and/or steal anything,” nor was the door damaged. The Youth Services Center declined to book them, police say, so they were released to their families.
HARASSMENT ARREST: Details on this are few but the report says it happened just before 1 pm: “Officers responded to multiple calls of a male in possible crisis near 4500 block of 53rd Ave SW. Officers responded and developed probable cause to arrest the suspect for felony harassment. The suspect was located in the 4800 block of Beach Drive on private property. After a short foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody without incident and booked into jail.”

My husband’s windows on his truck were smashed at about 8 AM on Ida street between 35th and 37th. He had brought out his work backpack and items for our kids’ preschool before putting the kids in the car. He locked the door after he put the backpack in before he went to get the kids and when he came back out, the windows were smashed and his backpack was taken that had his wallet in it. The thieves already went to Fred Meyer and tried to buy $400 worth of items.
NORTH ADMIRAL BREAK-IN: From JW:
A couple nights ago we had 2 pairs of cross-country skis with 3-pin bindings & a pair of men’s black leather ski boots stolen from inside the car along with the vehicle registration, in the North Admiral area.

My neighbors and I noticed on our video cameras that this car went by at 2:45 Sunday morning; one person got out and was looking through cars.
They managed to break into one car using a key fob device.

The two men arrested after a multiple-business break-in at Westwood Village almost two weeks ago are now charged. The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office filed second-degree burglary charges against Rafael S. Meyers and Jerry S. Plute Jr., both 34 years old. Both have been out of custody since the day after their arrests; as we reported that night, a judge declined prosecutors’ request to set bail.
Charging documents say both have substantial criminal records – three felony theft convictions for Meyers and “seven pending cases, all reflective of similar behavior, including three pending Burglary 2 charges.” We covered one of those cases last May, in which Meyers was charged with burglarizing Peel & Press in Morgan Junction. Plute has no felony convictions but court documents list eight criminal misdemeanors including vehicle prowling, possession of stolen property, and drug possession. The charging documents for the Westwood Village break-in detail what we’ve previously reported – the two are alleged to have broken into the empty ex-Fresh Vitamins space, then smashed through walls to get into Wyatt’s Jewelers (WSB sponsor) and Sport Clips. An alarm was triggered, and police got there in time to arrest Meyers quickly; Plute was found on the roof a few hours later, with SWAT on hand because a handgun had been stolen from one of the businesses so police believed he might be armed. The charging documents say that after the arrests, police found the handgun in the vacant store space along with items taken from Wyatt’s, plus handgun and shotgun ammunition and burglary tools. The two are due in court for arraignment March 10th.

7:23 PM: Thanks for the tips. Police are investigating gunfire around 6 pm at 30th and Graham in High Point. No injuries reported, but police confirmed to us at the scene that they found several casings at that intersection. One nearby resident told us by email that she heard several shots and then “two vehicles sped off” – described by her husband as a Mercedes and Mustang that “came back after a few minutes, but no more shots were fired, and they sped off again.” Police had the intersection taped off for a while so they could check for evidence, but have since removed the tape, and the street’s back open.
8:49 PM: Additional information from police – bullets hit a parked car, an occupied car, and a home, where one “round penetrated the walls, narrowly missing an infant and two adults.” No one was hurt; no suspect/vehicle descriptions.
Another Morgan Junction business burglary. The report is from Subway proprietor Faraz, who hopes you’ll watch for one particular potentially dumped item:
I wanted to report that the Subway sandwich shop on California Ave SW was broken into last night around 2 am and the cash drawer was ripped out from the POS and taken. It did not have any cash in it so may I ask if anyone sees it discarded on a street somewhere, to please let me know?
The perpetrator turned off the main electric breaker to the building on the outside so it would be completely dark and then threw a rock through the back door to smash it and get in.
We don’t leave any cash in our drawers overnight and even though we have had upward of 20 burglaries of a similar fashion in the past year at our Subway shops in the West Seattle, White Center, Georgetown areas, this was the first time someone actually took the cash drawer.

2:43 PM: Thanks for the tips. Police are investigating gunfire on 42nd SW between Edmunds and Hudson around quarter till 1 this afternoon. One reader says a vehicle was hit. A nearby resident tells us that some sort of argument between two men preceded the gunfire; the shooter got into a car and left. The archived police-radio exchanges include a description of the shooter as a Black man in his 20s, about 6 feet tall, thin, in a yellow vest or jacket and red pants, who got into a black 4-door sedan, possibly a Hyundai, and left southbound on 42nd. Officers told dispatch that they found ten .40-caliber casings. We’re still pursuing more information and will add anything else we find out.
9:31 PM: Just in from police, their preliminary summary, which includes new information:
Officers responded to a Shots call near 42 AV SW and SW Edmunds St regarding a male shooting at a vehicle. Upon arrival, Officers located several shell casings on 42 AV SW just south of SW Edmunds St. The victim’s vehicle was located further south on 42 AV SW and SW Dawson St. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that this started as a road rage incident. The driver of the silver sedan, who at first denied having any involvement in the incident, later told officers he honked his horn at the suspect who was walking in the roadway. The suspect in response to being honked at used his hand to bang on the hood of the silver sedan. The driver then got out and confronted the suspect. Some heated words were exchanged between both parties. As the suspect decided to walk away, the driver picked up a rock and threw it at the suspect. More words were exchanged, and the suspect attempted to walk away again. The driver then chased after the suspect on foot. This is when the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired several shots in the direction of the driver. 10 shell casings were located at the scene. The suspect was not located at the time of this incident.
12:10 PM: Two reports in West Seattle Crime Watch so far today:
RECOGNIZE THESE BURGLARS? The Southwest Precinct is circulating those images, asking for help identifying burglars who broke into the lobby at an apartment building in the 6500 block of California SW at 5:30 am last Saturday (February 20). Police say the burglars “left at 5:43 carrying several items from the storage units and pushing two bicycles.” If you have tips on who these are, you can contact the investigating detective at 206-256-6821 and refer to incident 21-043068.

CATALYTIC-CONVERTER THIEVES HIT 2 MORE ELEMENTS: Sometime early this morning, thieves took the catalytic converters from our 2004 Honda Element and that of a similar-vintage Element down our street in Upper Fauntleroy. It was sometime after we went off watch around 3 am; another neighbor reports hearing a “metal-grinding” noise around 4 am. So how do you know your catalytic converter has been stolen? As others have noted, trying to start a car without this piece of equipment generates an obnoxiously loud noise (noxious odor, too). As high-ticket as these items are reported to be (we haven’t taken it in yet so don’t have an estimate), SPD told us these thefts can be reported online, unless you have video or a witness. (It’s a clunky process – we’ve done it before for car prowls and a bike theft – so allot 10-15 minutes.) Our most-recent reader reports of catalytic-converter thefts/attempts: Last Sunday, an Element in Pigeon Point and Prius on Beach Drive; a few days before that, an Element southwest of The Junction.
ADDED 1:17 PM: Minutes after publishing that, while embarking on a neighborhood walk, we saw this in a curbside gutter about two blocks from HQ:
No way to know if it’s ours; only mark we could see without picking it up is “Made in USA” (Elements are, partly). Did find an interesting video while looking online for visuals. (UPDATE: Thanks to the commenters who note that our photo shows a muffler, not a catalytic converter.)
ADDED 2:16 PM: At least one more Element catalytic converter was stolen overnight – Tami emailed us to say thieves took the one from her 2005 Element parked in front of her house in Upper Morgan.
ADDED 7:14 PM: And we’ve heard from yet another recent theft victim, who called us to report that her Element’s catalytic converter was taken during the day Friday near California/Holly in Morgan Junction.

ARBOR HEIGHTS EARLY-MORNING SWAT RESPONSE: Some questions this morning about a SWAT response in Arbor Heights, near California/100th. The CSI vehicle above was still there when we went by at midmorning but the only officers we found were plainclothes detectives who told us they could not speak with media. So far the only information we have been able to found out is that it involved a warrant from outside the Southwest Precinct.
STOLEN BICYCLE: The photo and report are from Henry:
We noticed our bike was stolen today. It was locked to the staircase and the lock chain was cut open. It’s a pink Specialized Sirrus 2.0. Must have happened in the last few days, we’ve been home and didn’t hear anything.
This happened in the 6600 block of SW Admiral Way and has been reported to police.

Wesley says this pickup was stolen “from Admiral District on Wednesday night. 2017 Ram 1500 w/ Karavan Utility 5×12 trailer. Truck has full-width, black “EVO” pad on tailgate for carrying bikes. 2″ lift, knobby Cooper A/T tires. Truck plate is C80179U – trailer plate is 5235QJ.”
For the second time in three weeks, somebody has stolen a vehicle from the Chevron station at Delridge/Orchard – and a suspect’s been arrested. (Same service station, different suspect.) Last time, the arrest happened blocks away, after the stolen vehicle ended up crashed on its side. This time, the vehicle was a work truck, taken after its driver parked it and left it running around 6:30 this morning. A tracking device led police to an area in South Seattle, where they found the truck, with the suspected thief – ID’d by the Delridge victim – in it. He also turned out to have a felony warrant from another auto-theft case in which he is charged, so we are identifying him as 24-year-old Cainan Bear-Garza, whose previous arrest was one month ago today for allegedly robbing Delridge Home Depot (he spent 11 days in jail after that arrest). The warrant’s not for that case, though; it’s for an October auto theft in the Roxhill area, for which he was charged a day after he was jailed in the Home Depot case. The warrant was issued, documents say, because Bear-Garza failed to show up for the day-reporting program to which he was assigned when he was released on February 5th.
Two West Seattle Crime Watch notes, from the same block though not related as far as we know:
POLICE RESPONSE: If you saw/heard the major police response to California/Oregon a short time ago, it’s because there was briefly a “help the officer” callout over police radio. We went over to find out why. Police were briefly struggling with a man in his 50s described as a “person in crisis.” No officers were hurt; an SFD unit was dispatched to check out the man’s report of shoulder pain from what was radioed in as “bursitis.” He was taken into custody.
6:16 PM: The initial police summary has more details, and says an officer was hurt after all:
Officers responded to a Hazard call near 4453 California AV SW for a high/Intoxicated or in Crisis male walking in the roadway yelling at passing vehicles. As officers were trying to detain the subject for an ITA the subject resisted. During the handcuffing, the subject dropped to his knees and deliberately trapped one of the officer?s left arm under his body. The subject then deliberately rolled on the officer?s left hand which the subject still had trapped between his body and the curb causing injury to the officer?s left hand. The officer was transported to Swedish First Hill to receive medical treatment for his injured hand. The subject was booked into KCJ for Investigation of Assault.

COFFEE SHOP BURGLARY: Earlier, we went to Lula Coffee Company (just north of the aforementioned scene) to check out a reader tip that they had been broken into. Lula staff told us that someone had rmmoved the drive-thru window to get in and steal a register. The shop is open (until 7 pm weekdays) but only accepting cards/Apple Pay for now.
Two more catalytic-converter crimes reported by readers today:
21ST/GENESEE: Zack emailed to say, “I caught someone in the act of stealing the catalytic converter from my wife’s Honda Element this morning- he was cutting it off with a power tool that woke us up. This happened at 5:00 am at 21st + Genesee. Suspect walked south on 21st, then a car with no headlights on followed him – most likely they were working together. The police showed up right away …” The incident number is 21-045060.
BEACH DRIVE: We also heard this morning from Davis: “I am reporting a stolen Catalytic Converter from a Prius. It happened Sunday night from the 5000 block of Beach Drive. The car was parked on the street.”

That security video shows a burglar inside Grocery Plus at 16th/98th on Saturday night around 10:30 pm – a burglar who got in by crashing a car into the doors:
A member of the store owners’ family provided the video and photos, saying the burglar(s) “drove a mid-sized car/suv in a dark forest green color that police found was stolen into the front doors of the shop. Witnesses across the street have live footage they shared with the police, and the store also has a few surveillance videos that show the suspect rummaging through cigarettes and scratch tickets.” One of those clips is above; here’s a screengrab:

HARASSMENT ARREST: A Highland Park case was spotlighted today on SPD Blotter:
An alert officer spotted a suspect from a harassment call involving a gun days later outside the location of the original altercation.
Police were originally called to the 8800 block of 9 Avenue SW on February 13th for a report of a man who had entered the business and threatened a clerk with a firearm. Witnesses said the man left the scene in a green Honda Pilot SUV. Officers searched the area but were unable to find the suspect or the vehicle.
On February 19th an officer on patrol in the same area spotted the suspect’s vehicle parked nearby and even recognized the man based on a tattoo over the suspect’s eye that was visible on surveillance video. The officer quickly moved in and arrested the 30-year-old suspect and recovered a firearm. The suspect is a convicted felon and legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. Police booked the man into King County Jail for investigation of harassment as well as unlawful possession of a firearm.

For the first time in six years, City Attorney Pete Holmes visited the West Seattle Crime Prevention Council for Q&A, one week after he announced he’s running for re-election.
Much has changed in the six years since that previous visit, though the City Attorney’s responsibilities have not: The office is responsible for prosecuting low-level crimes – misdemeanors – while felonies are handled by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. It’s also the official legal representative for the city in a wide variety of matters, whether it’s defending the city in court or taking action against, say, a nuisance property owner.
That last type of work is most often handled by the City Attorney’s Precinct Liaisons, a position that Joe Everett currently holds for the Southwest and South Precincts, and that was explained as Holmes began speaking. (It was also reiterated in response to an attendee questions; if the City Attorney’s Office can help with “chronic neighborhood problems,” for example, Holmes said, then that lightens the load on police and can lead to a “better resolution.”)

35TH/AVALON ARREST: Thanks for the tip. Police are just east of the 35th/Avalon intersection; at the scene, they would tell us only that the incident they’re investigating was called in as a sexual assault, and that a suspect is in custody.
STOLEN CAR: The three for which we’ve received reader reports in recent days have all been found, so perhaps this one will be too: Cheryl‘s 1998 white Honda Civic was stolen from southwest Admiral today, between Hinds and Hanford on 47th. License plate AOE4525. Call 911 if you see it. … SATURDAY UPDATE: Cheryl says it was found a block away – a club kept it from being driven far.

ANOTHER CATALYTIC-CONVERTER THEFT: WSS reports, “Early Wednesday morning my Honda Element’s catalytic converter was stolen. Near 46th SW and SW Hudson St. Parked on the street.”
