Two West Seattle Crime Watch notes this afternoon:
STOLEN VEHICLE: Via text: “My blue 2002 Jeep Wrangler (TJ) was stolen from my house Tuesday around 4 pm. It was by the 5400 block of 49th and Findlay. Had black rins and bigger tires with a brown soft top. 187ZPV was license #,” Call 911 if you see it.
STORE ROBBERY: From the SPD “significant incident” file, another shoplift-turned-armed-robbery, this time at 35th/Barton early Tuesday:
On 10-27-2020 at 0041 hours, a suspect stole items in 7-11 and left the store. The clerk approached the suspect after he entered a vehicle. The suspect then produced a gun and pointed it at the victim clerk. The victim backed away and the suspect drove away from the scene.

CAR PROWL ALERT: Received from Southwest Precinct Crime Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Danner:
The SW Precinct has recently seen an increase in car prowl incidents in our William 2 (W2) patrol beat area, specifically on and around Beach Drive SW. These incidents are mostly occurring in the night time hours.
Here is the link to our Patrol Beat/Sector map. In order to address this increase, we would like to remind our community about the following car prowl prevention strategies:
• Check vehicle regularly (especially important during COVID times)
• Never leave valuables in plain view
• Hide chargers and accessories that indicate an electronic device may be in the vehicle
• Remove garage door openers, key cards and other keys from the vehicle
• If possible, park vehicle in a busy, locked, monitored and/or well-lit area
• Install anti-theft devices
• If possible, activate alarm
And from the SPD “significant incident” file, two summaries of note about arrests this past Sunday:
SHOPLIFTING TURNS TO ROBBERY: This happened in the 7300 block of Delridge:
On 10-25-2020 at 1632 hours, a subject was contacted by store security after they witnessed him shoplifting inside of a local business. Security attempted to contact the subject about merchandise taken when the subject pulled out a knife and threatened security staff. Subject left area on foot as officers arrived in the area. A student officer spotted a subject matching the description a block away and detained him for investigation. A witness from the store positively identified the subject as the person that pulled a knife. He was placed into custody and booked into King County Jail.
WEST MARGINAL CRASH FOLLOWUP: We briefly reported on this crash in realtime early Sunday. The “significant incident” summary reveals it had a backstory:
On 10/25/2020 at 0131 hours, the Washington State Patrol was actively pursuing a vehicle which exited SR599 and continued northbound on city streets, eventually heading north on W Marginal Wy SW. The suspect vehicle came upon a large gathering of vehicles and, after performing a U-turn, continued southbound on W Marginal Wy SW. The suspect vehicle entered the intersection of Highland Park Wy SW against a red light and subsequently collided with a motorist. The suspect driver fled on foot. WSP notified nearby agencies requesting a fast back. SPD SW and S units, Port of Seattle and King County units responded. WSP was able to capture the suspect and take him into custody. SPD assisted further with traffic control while SFD cut two passengers out of the victim vehicle. WSP is conducting the follow-up investigation.
We obtained the SPD report narratives today on two Friday night/early Saturday incidents:
FAUNTLEROY/EDMUNDS SHOOTING: The report doesn’t shine much light on the shooting that happened just before midnight Friday night (here’s our original coverage). It says the victim was shot in the left shoulder, lower abdomen, and left leg, and “was extremely uncooperative and refused to give any information about the suspect or where the shooting took place.” Police spoke with people who reported hearing the shots but no one who actually saw the gunfire; some said they saw/heard a vehicle speed away and gave differing descriptions of the vehicle – including the “red F-250” noted in our report, but also a “dark SUV” – as well as differing descriptions of a possible suspect. Police checked the area but did not find any shell casings.
35TH SW GUNFIRE: We only heard a bit about this at the time but later found an incident number so we could request the report today. Just before 2 am Saturday, police got a call from a couple who said someone in another car had fired shots at theirs near 35th/Barton. The shooter’s car had passed theirs westbound on SW Barton at “extremely high speed,” they said, and they flipped its driver off, doing that again when they caught up with the other car at the 35th/Barton stoplight. After they turned northbound onto 35th, the other driver followed them, they said, and someone in that car shot at theirs, breaking out the rear window and causing other damage, with what police eventually counted as evidence of 24 hits. No projectiles were found, and no one was hurt. The car from which the shots were fired was described only as a silver sedan missing its rear plate.
For the sixth year, Seattle University is conducting the annual Public Safety Survey citywide. As explained here, the goal is to collect “qualitative and quantitative data about perceptions of crime and safety from those who live and/or work in Seattle.” (Here’s how local 2018 results were described in 2019, for example.) While the survey is conducted independently of SPD, the department does get a report on the results, which are used to help shape micro-community policing plans, among other things. The survey is available in 11 languages, linked here. If you don’t have time for it today, it’ll be open until the end of November.

STOLEN MOTORCYCLE: The photo and report are from Michelle in Pigeon Point:
During the late Monday, early Tuesday hours of October 20th, at least two people are involved in the theft of a motorcycle from our driveway, where it was parked approximately 6ft from the front door of our home. We live in a small subdivision off of Andover and 22nd, the bike had to be pushed uphill past the doors and windows of 4 surrounding apartments to reach Andover and moved elsewhere. It is a 2005 Honda XR 650L, red and white, plate # 1G1910. It has a missing passenger peg, handwarmers, aftermarket side mirrors and a small cargo platform on the back with several bungee cords attached. When it was stolen it had a full tank of gas, making it weigh around 400lbs, hence our assumption that two people would be needed to push it uphill to the street. We filed a police report.

ANOTHER APARTMENT GARAGE BREAK-IN: From Alyssa at 40th/Edmunds:
Woke up Tuesday morning (10/20/20) to find my lock cut by bolt cutters on my storage unit. Over 50 pounds of collectible coins and baseball cards inherited from my deceased grandfather were taken along with DSLR cameras with extra lenses. They broke into the secure parking garage of Broadstone Sky and took from multiple storage units. Also broke into bike storage and took lots of bikes. Keep an eye on your stuff, by the amount they took it seems like more than one person.
FOUND RAZOR SCOOTER: From the “likely stolen and dumped” file – Lori sent the photo and report:
This red Razor scooter has been sitting under some trees on the corner of Erskine Way SW and 46th Ave. SW for over a week.
12:47 AM: The reader who texted these photos says this crash happened in the vicinity of 1238 Alki Avenue SW, and that the driver took out a “garden, bench, fire hydrant, light pole … hitting the light pole probably saved the car from going into the water.”
No SFD medical dispatch, so apparently no injuries.
10:26 AM: Tweets by Beat confirms this is being investigated as DUI. Meantime, Stewart L. sends photos of the aftermath:
The texter last night mentioned that the driver also took out “Siriya’s garden.” Siriya is a neighborhood resident who tends a path of planting strip there. Stewart sent before/after photos:
Stewart says, “I say hi to Siriya all the time as I stroll past her garden that she lovingly tends to, and to see all of her work plowed over in a second was really upsetting. She works so hard on this to beautify the neighborhood.”
Just in case the burglar(s) who hit Tamsen‘s garage in Upper Morgan dumped these priceless items, she is hoping you can keep watch for them:
Our garage was broken into (Thursday) night. All of our garden tools and equipment were stolen. But the most valuable items taken were our Family Bible (that held family history items in it) and 3 photo albums. They were in a black zippered bag. The bible is large, 10″ x 10″, maroon color with gold lettering of “Holy Bible” on it. We’ve filed a police report.
Just hoping the (burglars) tossed the bible and albums. If anyone in the 6300 block in the Morgan Junction area around 38th and Morgan and Graham Street could check their waste containers, we’d be forever grateful.

11:45 PM: Police and fire are responding right now to a shooting near Fauntleroy and Edmunds. Dispatchers reported 911 calls about shots fired, and a possible victim; first responders on the scene found a man reported to have two gunshot wounds. Updates to come.
11:51 PM: Police are trying to sort out exactly where the man was shot – possibly “a block or two east” of where they found him. They’re also looking for a vehicle that might be related, described as a red Ford F-150.
MIDNIGHT: Added the top photo texted by a reader, showing the emergency response outside The Whittaker; texter says they heard “three loud shots.” The victim is being taken to Harborview.

12:26 AM: No new information on the investigation. We asked SFD about the victim; spokesperson David Cuerpo says the 22-year-old man is in serious condition.

Between 9 pm and 5:25 am today, our 2007 Toyota Prius had the catalytic converter stolen. They cut out the front and back flanges that hold it there (better resale value, because it can be sold as complete). They even took the bolts. Husband took to muffler shop and someone else was there that got hit last night too.
Southwest Precinct Crime-Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Danner recently sent an alert including advice on how to protect your car.
Stolen in North Admiral, on 42nd Avenue SW between Ferry and Walker: 2000 white Passat, license plate number BVZ3761, police have been notified; please call Nicole at 720-635-1604 if you find or see it – after you report it to 911.

7:40 PM: Thanks for the texts. Guardian One was circling South Delridge/White Center for a while earlier this evening; just as we were headed out to look on the ground for any signs of a related response, the online flight tracker showed that the helicopter moved on. Then Mike saved the day by tweeting that he’d seen a sizable response in the O’Reilly Auto Parts lot at 17th/Roxbury. We were able to talk briefly to a King County Sheriff’s Office sergeant there; he told us they’re looking for a “fugitive” but would not elaborate further, aside from confirming that the helicopter presence was indeed related. We’re trying to find out more and will update if we do.
9:09 PM: KCSO spokesperson Sgt. Ryan Abbott says the person they were seeking is “a homicide suspect wanted out of Seattle.”
Four notes:
ALLEY HOLDUP: From the SPD “significant incident reports” file – this happened Thursday night in Arbor Heights, in the 4300 block of SW 100th::
On 10-15-2020 at 1924 hours, the victim was in his alley taking out his trash when the suspect came up behind him and pressed something in his back (believed to be a gun). The suspect demanded his cell phone or he would shoot him. He didn’t have his cell on him so the suspect told him to turn out his pockets. The victim had nothing in his pockets. The suspect told the victim to run down the alley and not look back or he’d shoot. The suspect left the area in a vehicle.
No description or other details, but we’re requesting the report. (TUESDAY UPDATE: Police say the victim believes he knows the would-be robber, and that it’s related to an ongoing dispute.)
STOLEN CAR: From Byron, just south of the city-limits line:
Our red 2007 Honda Civic 4-door, license plate 867WSD, was stolen from our driveway. Sometime between 9pm last night and 11:15 am this morning. (10600 block of) 27th Ave. SW. There’s a car seat in the back and a brand new Yakima rack and kayak carrier on the roof.

The executive director of the Seattle Animal Shelter now calls the Delridge situation we first reported Thursday “the worst case of animal neglect and cruelty I’ve seen in more than 20 years of doing this work, and it’s quite possibly the worst case our shelter has ever handled.” As the man arrested at his house near 26th/Findlay made his first court appearance today, SAS provided an update on the animals seized there, and photos of a few of them.

More than 220 animals are now in the care of SAS, whose spokesperson Melissa Mixon says they were “discovered in cages inside and outside a home on the property (and) are currently being treated at the shelter for severe neglect and malnourishment. Three of the animals are being transferred offsite for veterinary care reserved for exotic animals.” Here’s just part of the scene as the animals were brought to shelter HQ for intake:
Mixon provided this list of the animals they found:
77 rabbits
128 guinea pigs
7 chickens
2 mice
7 chinchillas
3 dogs
Mixon added that “in other buildings on the property, a number of deceased animals were found in cages. Investigators are still working to determine the exact amount but estimate it could be in the hundreds.”
More new information comes in the document from the 54-year-old suspect’s bail hearing today. He remained in jail today, with bail set at $7,500 by a judge, though prosecutors asked for $40,000. (11:11 pm update: He posted bond mid-evening tonight and was released.) He is not yet charged; that could happen Monday. The initial report is from SPD, which assisted animal-control enforcement in serving a warrant. The officer writes:
“I observed about 25 animals in the first room of the house … The animals were in small cages that (the suspect) called ‘transport’ cages. Many of the animals did not have food or water in their cages. (He) advised that he would be transporting the animals to the east coast soon.
Animal Control alerted me to unusual circumstances around the property. Specifically, they located deceased animals in varying degrees of decay. I asked (him) for permission to walk around the home and property.(He) allowed officers to (do so), and mentioned that he has nothing to hide. Every room of his home has animals living in cages. The floors are covered with hay, animal feces, and animal food. Inside the home I noticed two recently dead animals inside cages.
That wasn’t the worst of it – the report also says the officer found at least 80 animal skeletons, inside and outside of cages, in the backyard, in a structure behind the house, and in structures at property the suspect owns next door. The officer wrote, “Animal Control … believed the animals to have died from a lack of food, water, and medical attention.:”
HOW TO HELP: From the shelter:
In the 24 hours since the animals were discovered, the shelter has received an outpouring of support from community members, residents and organizations that want to help the animals. At this time, the best way to do that is through direct donations to the shelter’s Help the Animals Fund or via the shelter’s Amazon Wish List. Shelter staff have updated the list to reflect the needs for the 220-plus animals while in the shelter’s care. Graves also expressed gratitude for the support of the Seattle Animal Shelter Foundation, which is collecting donations for the animals here.
Please note that, due to the ongoing pandemic requirements, the shelter is unable to accept in-person donations.
The shelter’s primary focus at this time is evaluating, treating and caring for the animals. In the coming days or weeks, Graves said the shelter may need the support of its foster community to help care for the animals so as not to strain capacity and resources at the shelter.
She says the animals are “in a very, very fragile state” but “are doing well in our care and our shelter team has done an incredible job in this all-hands-on-deck situation.”
The shelter says it’s handled double the usual number of severe animal-cruelty cases this year – 27 so far, when an average year brings 12 – and Mixon adds, “If you suspect an animal is being harmed, please contact the shelter at 206-386-7387.”

Police are investigating gunfire near Myrtle Reservoir Park. Residents called 911 after hearing it about an hour ago; at least two casings were subsequently found in the street near 39th/Willow (map). No injuries or property damage reported. Police told us at the scene that they are interested in hearing from anyone in the area who might have caught something on a security camera; the case number is (corrected) 2020-295620.

STOLEN BIKES: From Katrina:
Our bikes were stolen off our covered porch in North Admiral. They are both Public brand cruisers, both have upgraded Brooks saddles.
We’re looking to get the word out in case they (hopefully) get dumped somewhere. Thought we would let folks know as well to be extra vigilant as we were told there has been an uptick in bike theft in our neighborhood.

APARTMENT-GARAGE BREAK-IN: From Tim:
(Wednesday) night a prowler entered our locked garage at apartment complex: Aura West Seattle. He had bolt cutters and cut a chain we had used to lock up a wagon. He then used our wagon to gather other items in the garage. Someone must have caught him in the middle and he ended up ditching the wagon in the garage with a stolen car battery charger and a tent. This prowler stole a previous wagon about a month ago along with a roof bag for our camping trips. We got a new wagon with a lock, and still, no match for the thief. They have also broken into the bike room as well on separate occasions.

Thanks for all the tips about this SWAT raid just west of the busy 16th/SW 107th intersection (Taco Bell, etc.), at the east end of a popular route between south West Seattle and White Center. We got there just as the operation was wrapping up. Some research revealed that it was NOT a King County Sheriff’s Office operation, though that’s their jurisdiction – it was led by Renton PD. They weren’t able to provide us information immediately – but we just got some from KCSO’s Major Jeffrey Flohr, speaking at the North Highline Town Hall that we’re covering right now for our partner site White Center Now. He said the operation was indeed in partnership with Renton PD – it started with officers pulling over a car last night (where, he didn’t say) and finding 10 pounds of meth, leading to warrants being served today, including this one.
Maj. Flohr said several people were taken into custody today at locations including this one, and that drugs and money were seized.
We’re hoping for additional info from Renton PD tomorrow.

5:26 PM: Thanks for the tip about Seattle Animal Shelter and SPD officers at a house this afternoon near 26th and Findlay.
Officers at the scene wouldn’t comment but here’s what SAS spokesperson Melissa Mixon tells WSB:
The Seattle Animal Shelter is conducting an investigation into an animal welfare and potential animal cruelty case. Working jointly with Seattle Police Department, the shelter successfully executed a search warrant early this afternoon and discovered at least 200 animals in the home. These animals include dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs. and chinchillas. Some of the animals were deceased inside the home.
Because this is an ongoing investigation, we are limited in what we can say so as not to jeopardize the investigation and due process. While this investigation is ongoing, animals seized from the property will be moved into the care of the Seattle Animal Shelter for evaluation.
Seattle Animal Shelter is authorized under City code to investigate cases and bring forth charges of animal cruelty. First-degree animal cruelty is a Class C felony punishable by five years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both.
We will follow up to see how the case proceeds.
7:13 PM UPDATE: An update from Mixon – she says one person is in custody, and clarifies that investigators “found more than 200 live animals in a home .. An unknown number of deceased animals were also discovered in a second home on the property. Investigators are still working to determine the exact amount. Seattle Animal Shelter Director Ann Graves described the scene in the homes as one of the most severe cases of animal neglect and cruelty she has seen in her 20-year career. As in many animal welfare cases, the discovery and seizure of these animals was in part thanks to a vigilant community member who saw something and said something. It’s a reminder to all of us that animals don’t have a voice and that’s why it’s so important for us all to remain vigilant and help speak for them when something seems wrong. ”
9:37 PM: The suspect, a 54-year-old man, was booked into King County Jail for investigation of animal cruelty. He does not appear to have a criminal record. Meantime, there’s a discussion in comments below about what SAS might need to care for the seized animals; one commenter says they’re already emailing people who have fostered animals before.

9:15 AM: Two more stolen bicycles to watch for:
Amy sent the photos, reporting that they were stolen near 41st/Findlay: “My husband’s beloved custom bikes were stolen out of our garage (Tuesday) after an automatic-garage-door malfunction; the garage door was likely left open all day. These are custom and unique bikes, brand is Speedvagen. So I’m hoping someone can help if they are seen.” Police report # 20-292752.
9:49 AM: Just in from the Southwest Precinct, two alerts – first, a request to help find this car prowler

The precinct says that on October 6th around 10 pm, this person tried to break into three vehicles in the 7700 block of 20th SW. “After realizing all the vehicle doors were locked, the suspect left on foot. The reporting party stated this suspect has successfully prowled vehicles in the past.” If you have information on who this person is, call the precinct at 206-733-9800.
Also from the precinct, this alert that auto theft is on the rise in West Seattle/South Park:
Specifically:
*The precinct is up 10% in the last 28 days
*Mostly during third watch (between 1900-2100), and mostly in the Morgan Junction area
*The Morgan Junction community is up 138% year to date (+28 cars), 60% in the last 28 days*In an effort to decrease these incidents, we would like to remind our community members about the following prevention strategies:
*Check on your vehicle regularly, especially if you aren’t driving it frequently
*Never leave your car running or the keys in the ignition when you’re away, even for ‘just a minute’, please remember this is illegal in Seattle and in Washington (SMC 11.70.160, RCW 46.61.600)
*Remove remote garage door openers from vehicle
*Always lock doors and roll up windows, even if the car is parked in front of your home
*Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked
*If possible, park vehicle in a busy, locked, monitored and/or well-lit area

That’s Sarah‘s e-bike, taken by whoever broke into her car at Genesee/Avalon: “They stole my Rad Power Bike and $200 worth of outdoor gear.” If anyone finds the bike, she has the serial number – we’ve reported on a couple stolen e-bikes lately that were dumped not far from where they were taken.
Early Saturday, we reported briefly on two incidents. Today, we obtained the report narratives:
SOUTH DELRIDGE GUNFIRE: This was reported at 16th/Trenton after 1 am, in connection with a reported gathering of about 20 people. A caller said someone wearing white pants had a gun tucked in his waistband. The officer who wrote the report arrived to find several people wearing white pants “standing on the sidewalk,” then walking away, while “yelling at SPD stating that the person that had fired the shot had already left the area.” None of them wanted to provide details or go on record as being a victim. “The group entered several parked cars and began to leave the area. A 45-cal shell casing was found in the roadway of 16 Av SW.” The report also notes that officers heard a car in the distance “driving at high speed,” then the sound of a collision, and evidence of a hit-run crash taking down a sign at 12th/Trenton, but no indication whether that was related.
JUNCTION ROBBERY: Just before midnight Friday night, officers responded to a report of a robbery at the Junction 7-11 (California/Erskine). The report clarifies that the store itself wasn’t robbed. The victim had been standing outside the store and told police he decided to clean the area, though he is not a store employee. He left his backpack by the store entrance while taking trash to a receptacle behind the store, and saw someone pick it up. He told that person to give it back. The thief refused, and then he and two people with him all took out pocket knives, the victim told police. They then got into a red, older-model, 4-door Cadillac with body damage and started to leave; the victim tried to open one of the car’s doors and was knocked down, but, he told police, unhurt. He described the three as “all black males in their teens … 16-19 years old, approximately 5’8”, and medium builds … the driver was wearing a white tank top (and the others) were wearing black pants and tops.” Police didn’t find the car or suspects. The backpack, in case you find one discarded, was black, JanSport brand, containing clothing and medication.

STOLEN CAR: Beth in Fauntleroy says this is the second time she’s been hit by auto theft, and a WSB reader helped find the car last time, so maybe that’ll happen again:

AIR COMPRESSOR STOLEN: The video is from John:
John says, “I live in Lighthouse Apts. on Delridge Way … multiple cars broken into and had someone come on my back patio and steal my air compressor.” This video, not as close-up, shows car prowlers in the garage.
EMBLEM THEFT: From M:

4:27 PM: This time, the report is from Joanna: “Unfortunately the catalytic converter was stolen from my Prius this week while parked on the residential street on the corner of SW Edmunds St and 41st Ave SW. I took my car into an auto shop in west Seattle and they said I was their 10th recently and that not much can be done to prevent it (besides not parking on the street).” Southwest Precinct Crime-Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Danner did recently send an alert that included this other bit of advice: “Speak with your vehicle manufacturer to inquire about specific devices that can be added to shield or lock the catalytic converter.”
ADDED SATURDAY NIGHT: April has since emailed to tell us about her theft in Fauntleroy: “We just figured out that our Prius, parked in front of our house on 44th and SW and Wildwood/Brace Point, had its catalytic converter stolen on Tuesday night. Thieves put a concrete clump behind the rear wheel, which is what we saw initially and couldn’t figure out what it was doing there… until I tried to start the car a couple of days later. They likely boosted the car onto the concrete while they removed the converter.”
12:08 AM – ROBBERY: Police are looking for two people reported to have robbed the Junction 7-11 (California/Erskine) at knifepoint a short time ago. They left in what was described as an older red Cadillac “with damage.” No injuries reported. If we hear anything more, we’ll update.
1:35 AM – GUNFIRE: Nothing new on that, but now there’s a major police response in South Delridge, after multiple reports of gunfire, apparently associated with a crowd of people at 16th/Trenton. Police responding to an initial report said they heard shots too. No injuries reported so far. (1:39 am) They’ve found at least one shell casing.
