WEST SEATTLE WEEKEND SCENE: Santa Pub Crawl, second decade!

(WSB photos)

Santa Claus was coming to town. And so was Santa. Santa, too. And Kris Kringle. And did we mention Santa? If you were in The Junction late this afternoon and/or early this evening, you might have noticed an abundance of Santas. It was the 11th year for the West Seattle Santa Pub Crawl, which started at Shadowland (above) at 4 pm and ended at Poggie Tavern (below) at 8:

The pub crawl also takes advantage of Santa’s giving spirit with fundraising raffles benefiting a local nonprofit – today that was Furry faces Foundation.

VIDEO: B-Sharp Studio musicians busk for food-bank support

If you were in the heart of The Junction at midday today, you might have caught some of the holiday music by buskers from B-Sharp Studio. Again this year, they set up on the corner of California/Alaska to gather donations for the West Seattle and White Center Food Banks. We recorded part of their performance:

Busking musicians today were Judy, Tim, and Travis. B-Sharp musicians will return next Saturday – 11 am to 1 pm December 20th – for more food-bank fundraising!

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Wandering along Admiral’s ‘Winter Wonderland’ for treats, activities, photos, more!

(WSB photos and video)

11:11 AM: Santa is under the disco ball at West Seattle Realty (2715 California SW; WSB sponsor) as the Admiral Neighborhood Association‘s “Winter Wonderland” begins. You can stop here for photos with Santa in the coolest suit he might wear all season. This is one of more than a dozen stops on the stroll – activities and treats await you at various local businesses along a mile, from North Admiral to South Admiral – find the map/list here. We’re off to another stop – this is on until 2 pm.

11:34 AM: Need a holiday pic of your pet? Anna is behind the camera at Mud Bay Admiral (2611 California SW), where we photographed her as Henry posed. Steps away, co-proprietor Bill – in festive Christmas sweater – is serving up free cocoa outside Circa (2605 California SW; WSB sponsor):

Near the corner of California and Admiral, the Admiral Church carolers were offering holiday faves:

And now we’re at Brookdale Admiral Heights, where West Seattle High School art students are selling handmade ornaments in the lobby (look for the sign outside):

Face-painting is available here too. We’re off to a few more stops!

12:33 PM: We can guarantee you that Winter Wonderland is the only holiday celebration with an Official Penguin (that’s what The Penguin’s badge says, honest). To complete our tour, we wandered up to the two participating independent North Admiral coffee shops, both with craft stations – here’s a young visitor making an ornament at West Seattle Grounds:

At Current Coffee, ornament-making involves paper coffee filters that you can hang in the shop window or take home!

The sun has even appeared – Winter Wonderland can mean wonder-ful weather, after all. Here’s the map/list again – some activities are stretching beyond the official 2 pm end time; pet photos at Mud Bay continue until 4, and there’s an afterparty of sorts at Welcome Road Winery (3804 California SW; WSB sponsor), starting at 3 pm. The Admiral Neighborhood Association organized Winter Wonderland as a chance to celebrate the community and introduce you to some of the great local businesses you might not have visited before.

Final weekend for West Seattle’s only nonprofit-benefiting tree lot

If you plan on getting a Christmas tree but don’t have it yet, the Holy Rosary School Tree Lot wants you to know this is its final weekend – here’s the announcement we were asked to share:

While we are open through December 16th, this is the last weekend of the Holy Rosary Tree Lot. Located behind the school [map], enter through the alley off Dakota. Freshly cut trees (2-10′), wreath and garland available.

Not only does the Tree Lot benefit Holy Rosary School, but a portion of the proceeds are donated to the West Seattle Food Bank and Salvation Army Hickman House. New this year, the lot is also collecting new and gently used coats for our neighbors in need at Union Gospel Mission.

Come support Holy Rosary School and local charities by purchasing your tree and greenery at the oldest, continuously run tree lot in West Seattle!

The tree lot will be open at 9 am both days this weekend, closing at 9 pm on Saturday, 8 pm on Sunday. It’s on the list of West Seattle Christmas-tree sellers you can find any time in our West Seattle Holiday Guide.

VIDEO, PHOTOS: Scenes from Hometown Holidays Shop Late Thursday #2 and West Seattle Art Walk

6:37 PM: You can get serenaded in The Junction tonight if your path happens to cross that of the Silver Belles, caroling until about 7:30 pm at a variety of stops. It’s the second Shop Late Thursday on the <strong>West Seattle Junction Hometown Holidays calendar, running concurrent with this month’s West Seattle Art Walk. Some businesses are staying open until 8 pm or later.

(Jet City Labs’ Makers Market)

See the venues here; see the Art of Music venues here.

ADDED 9:27 PM: Thanks to Art of Music curator John Redenbaugh for the three photos below of tonight’s performers – first, jean mann and Greg Ensminger at Beveridge Place Pub:

Next, CenterPlay at Great American Diner & Bar:

Friends and Folk at West Seattle Grounds:

10 PM: Photos from WSB’s Torin Record-Sand – first, at Jet City Labs, the creator of Erica’s Critter Corner:

Watercolorist Gloria Breslin was at Verity:

Tracey Hilton was at VAIN:

And so were the Junction Elves!

We wrap it all up with one more song from the Silver Belles:

Hometown Holidays events continue this weekend with the Cocoa and Coat Drive in the Kiwanis booth at the south end of the Farmers’ Market, 10 am-2 pm.

WEST SEATTLE HOLIDAY SCENE: Admiral District Jubilee. With snow!

The most magical scene we’ve seen along tonight’s Jubilee “neighborhood stroll” in The Admiral District is outside Circa (2605 California SW; WSB sponsor), where co-proprietor Gretchen and Brandi are deploying a snow-blower to create a bit of wintry wonderland!

Macaroons, too. Treats are offered at multiple businesses, including Alki Bike and Board (2606 California SW):

But the place to start is Hoste (2332 California SW), where you can shop a pop-up holiday market with multiple vendors:

Hoste proprietor Lana was thrilled by the turnout. Wide variety of merchandise, from bottled sauces to accessories and apparel:

You can also enter a raffle at Hoste to support the Carlson family (whose story we told here). See other stops on the map for the Jubilee, which is on until 9 pm.

COUNTDOWN: One week until Alki Holiday Lights, Christmas Ship, and … your boat too?

One week from tonight, the Argosy Cruises Christmas Ship makes its only two West Seattle stops of the season, enhanced by the Alki Community Council‘s Alki Holiday Lights celebration, including local businesses and organizations offering holiday treats and fun. And this year, the ACC is hoping more boaters will join the party:

ACC president Charlotte Starck says all boaters are invited: “Sailboats, motorboats, yachts — come one, come all. Cruise along Alki anytime between 6–9 pm or arrive ahead of the Argosy Christmas Ship stop — whatever fits their schedule. The more sparkle on the water, the better. Last year’s crowds were very clear: they would love to see more boats join in the fun.” The Christmas Ship is due off the beach 8:35-8:55 pm; earlier in the evening, it will stop along Harbor Avenue (off Salty’s) 5:50-6:10 pm. (Here’s its full-season schedule.)

VIDEO: Cheeriest Christmas concert of the season, West Seattle Big Band

The West Seattle Big Band plays music you can’t help but dance to. Some of the ~150 people at last night’s WSBB holiday concert at Grace Church proved that. We were there and would have been dancing too except that we had to mind our video camera! Here are eight of the songs played by the band, directed by Jim Edwards:

“Santa Claus Is Coming to Town”:

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”:

“Feliz Navidad”:

“Mele Kalikimaka”:

“All I Want for Christmas Is You”:

“In the Christmas Mood”:

“Big Band Christmas 2” (medley):

“Big Band Christmas 1” (medley):

(Vocalists were Jenaige Lane and Ryan Alvis.) The band is all-volunteer; any revenue gets donated to school-music programs.

P.S. You can find the other dozen-plus clips on the WSB YouTube channel. Even better, go see the West Seattle Big Band’s next holiday-season gig, Saturday (December 13)at the West Seattle Eagles HQ in The Junction (4426 California SW), with music at 7 pm after 5:30 pm dinner, as previewed here.

PREVIEW: From carolers to treats to art to music, reasons to not stay home Thursday night

By this time tomorrow, according to the forecast, the wind will have quieted, and the rain might even take a break. So here are other reasons to plan on going out tomorrow night:

SHOP LATE THURSDAY IN THE JUNCTION: It’s the second of two Thursdays in which The Junction will be a bit more festive – here’s how the West Seattle Junction Association summarizes what’s planned for 5:30 to 7:30 pm Thursday:

*Beecher’s Cheese handing out soup and cheese samples in front of Key Bank.
*Santa’s Elves running around handing out candy canes and special ornaments.
*Silver Belles Carolers performing – starting around Northwest Art and Frame, and heading north from there

WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: This is the big holiday-season art walk, at various venues from Alki to Morgan Junction, starting around 5 pm. Here’s the list for this quarter:

See details on participating venues – including who has a reception (usually 5 to 8 pm) – here.

ART OF MUSIC: Accompanying the Art Walk again this month is The Art of Music, a collection of three mini-concerts, 6 to 7:45 pm, in Admiral, The Junction, and Morgan Junction. Here’s the rundown:

Friends and Folk @ West Seattle Grounds in the Admiral District [performance starts 6:20 pm]

CenterPlay @ Great American Diner & Bar in Alaska Junction

jean mann @ Beveridge Place Pub in Morgan Junction

Learn more about this month’s performers here.

ADMIRAL JUBILEE: In addition to Art Walk-ing, in the Admiral Junction area, you can join in the Jubilee, strolling to multiple participating businesses, 4-9 pm – see the map – and special events – here, including a pop-up market at hosting business Hoste.

There are other events planned tomorrow night too – check our calendar for more!

HOLIDAY MUSIC: Two places to see and hear the West Seattle Big Band this week

These two performances this week just might be the brassiest, jazziest, liveliest you’ll see and hear all holiday season long! The preview is from West Seattle Big Band director Jim Edwards:

The West Seattle Big Band will be presenting a free Holiday Concert in cooperation with North Shorewood’s Grace Church Tuesday, December 9th at 7:00 PM. The Concert will feature Christmas favorites with that classic big band sound. Rumor is there will be a cookie intermission too. Grace Church is located at 10323 28th Ave SW. Just south of SW Roxbury St.

WSBB will also be the featured Saturday night dance band at the West Seattle Eagles on December 13th. A dinner of Baked Ziti will be available for purchase at $15 prior to the show at 5:30 PM. First come, first served. All proceeds of the dinner will go to the Music Boosters at James Madison Middle School. Space is limited. No reservations will be taken for the meal. The evening of music starts at 7:00 PM with 3 sets concluding at 10:00 PM. Music will include some Christmas favorites as well as big band swing and jazz. There is no cover charge for the event, but a tip jar will be available with 100% of the proceeds of the evening going to the Madison instrumental music program. The event entrance is off the alley behind the Eagles Building at 4426 California Ave SW.

West Seattle Big Band is a working big band with a community mindset. They are an all-volunteer group formed in 1996, dedicated to supporting instrumental music education in our community’s public schools.

PHOTOS: Visiting Fauntleroy Church’s Festival of Trees

Many holiday happenings are scheduled for nights and weekends. Here’s one you can visit on a weekend morning, if you’re free at this time of day … the Fauntleroy Church Festival of Trees is open for drop-in visits, 9 am to noon Mondays through Thursdays, all month long, plus two weekend windows we’ll mention at the end of this story.16 trees are placed around the Fellowship Hall, and no two are alike.

The Peanut Butter Tree, by the church’s Caring Ministry, is in the spirit of the event, which is also a food drive – bring a can or jar or package and place it under your favorite to “vote”! Then there’s the tree that fuses two holidays:

Boos and Sparkles” was created by the Fulford Family. Another tree offers a quiz of sorts:

Students of Low Tide Arts (in the same building as the church and Y) ask whether you recognize any of these famous artworks! On the other side of the room, the theme is Seattle sports:

A Fellowship Group” created the sports tree. At another tree, you can learn “The Legend of the Christmas Spider“:

That was entered by the Tucker/Dwyer Family. Sixteen trees in all (thanks to Judy Pickens for this list) are set up, so we’ve barely shown you a third – go stop by the Fellowship Hall at the church (9140 California SW) and bring a food donation if you can. If you can’t get there on a weekday morning, you can also visit the trees during a 6 pm reception before the church’s 7 pm Christmas concert on Saturday, December 20, and during the reception after the 4 pm concert on Sunday, December 21.

HOLIDAY GIVING: Pathfinder K-8 wreath sales in The Junction (next two Sundays too)

Many West Seattle Farmers Market booths have holiday greenery today, but if you venture just a few steps south of the market, you can buy a handmade wreath that helps students. Pathfinder K-8’s famous wreaths and other ā€œdoor decorā€ are available at a booth on the SW corner of California/Alaska, raising money for outdoor education. Above, Cienna and Kyra are there today; you’ll find volunteers there during market hours the next two Sundays too.

WEST SEATTLE SCENE: Holiday bazaar at West Seattle Eagles

Thanks to Anne for the photos. If you’re heading to The Junction for the Farmers’ Market (or another destination!) today, you can browse and buy at a holiday bazaar too – the West Seattle Eagles’ bazaar. More than 18 vendors with items from preserves to art!

As featured on today’s event list and in our Holiday Guide, they’re planning to be open until 3 pm, at 4426 California SW (next to the. post office).

REPORT #4: Hometown Holidays crowd cheers West Seattle Junction tree lighting

The tree in Junction Plaza Park is now aglow in its seasonal glory, after a West Seattle Junction Hometown Holidays countdown led onstage by District 1 City Counilmember Rob Saka and his kids:

Councilmember Saka’s sweater featured Christmas cartoon villain The Grinch, but the night’s mood was not grinchy in the slightest:

After the lights went on, it was serious selfie time beneath the tree:

Though tonight’s festival was the biggest event of this year’s Hometown Holidays, there’s more to come – Thursday night (December 11) is big too, with the West Seattle Art Walk, Shop Late Thursday, wandering elves and carolers!

REPORT #3: Carols and rock at West Seattle Junction Hometown Holidays Tree Lighting

Before the lights, the music! Three groups performed mini-concerts on the stage in Junction Plaza Park before the Hometown Holidays Tree Lighting. We got there too late to catch the opening performance by the Endolyne Children’s Choir, but recorded video with the two others. The show-stopping moment was the last song in our first clip above from the West Seattle-based Met Singers – a lyrical twist on “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” to tell the tale of Mariners slugger Cal “Big Dumper” Raleigh. (Addedread the lyrics here!) Below is the second half of the Met Singers’ onstage caroling, starting with “Jingle Bells”:

.
The choir, directed by Laurie de Leonne, was preceded by groups from the West Seattle School of Rock – they took short breaks between songs to re-form, so we recorded their songs one by one. Here are four – first, “Hazy Shade of Winter”:

“Santa’s Got a Brand-New Bag”:

“Merry Xmas Everybody”:

And “Super Rock Santa”:

One more report ahead from tonight’s event – the tree lighting!

REPORT #2: Cat wins pet-costume contest at West Seattle Junction Hometown Holidays Tree Lighting

Things were a little chaotic but when all was said and done, a cat competing against about half a dozen dogs won the pet-costume contest that’s become a tradition on West Seattle Junction Hometown Holidays Tree Lighting night!

Emcee Brian Callanan called the kitty by the names War Zone and War Games, but whichever was correct, so was Winner – with prizes donated by All the Best Pet Care, one of the night’s sponsors. The kitty stayed remarkably calm throughout:

The dogs were fairly mellow too:

Another of the top three was Chef Coy-R-Gi:

Next up: Two of the groups that performed mini-concerts before tree time!

COUNTDOWN: One week until Winter Wonderland in Admiral!

While we assemble our coverage from tonight’s big celebration in The Junction, we’re taking a moment to look ahead a week to next Saturday, when the Admiral Neighborhood Association invites you to wander a mile of local businesses for the Winter Wonderland party! The map’s live now, so here’s the full announcement:

Enjoy a full mile of festive fun on Saturday, December 13th from 11 AM-2 PM with the Admiral Neighborhood Association at our third annual Winter Wonderland!

Businesses throughout Admiral are offering a variety of family-friendly activities, specials, and promotions as we encourage our neighbors to shop small this holiday season. From holly-jolly pet photos and coffee-filter snowflakes to hot cocoa stations and artful nibbles; there’s snow place like Admiral this winter.

And while you’re out, don’t forget to stop by West Seattle Realty for a daytime disco party with Santa, take a break at the Admiral Theater for their special showing of The Nightmare Before Christmas, then sing along with carolers from the Admiral Church Choir. And be on the lookout for our roving Winter Wonderland penguin throughout the event.

Look for the penguins in the windows of participating Admiral businesses day-of and visit our website connecttoadmiral.org/winter-wonderland to see the full map and plan your route!

REPORT #1: West Seattle Junction Tree Lighting festival begins with Night Market

(Screengrab from 42nd/Alaska traffic cam)

4:28 PM: Happening right now in the West Seattle Junction – SW Alaska is closed to traffic between California and 42nd for the Hometown Holidays Tree Lighting festival, featuring a Night Market that’s open now(here’s the list of vendors). The schedule:

5:00 PM School of Rock
5:30 PM Pet Costume Contest
5:45 PM Metropolitan Singers (carolers)
6:00 PM Tree Lighting (with carolers)
6:15 PM Holiday DJ spinning tunes
8:00 PM Night Market closes

Updates to come!

6:20 PM: The tree was lit on schedule and we’re back at HQ processing video and photos. The weather stayed dry and if you haven’t been yet, you can still go shop the market!

7:42 PM: Adding a few scenes from the market, including Santa himself, wandering and posing:

Cookie decorating too!

Some of the vendors are from elsewhere in The Junction, like Falafel Salam and Bakery Nouveau:

Separate reports are coming up about what happened onstage – from the pet costume contest to the tree lighting!

Three art-ful events for your weekend shopping

Among the places you can find unique creations for gifts – or yourself – are local art studios with special events, as featured in our Holiday Guide.

RAIN CITY CLAY: Deb Schwartzkopf is hosting a weekend show/sale at her Rain City Clay at 4208 SW 100th in Arbor Heights. We stopped by during last night’s opening reception.

More than 80 artists are participating, with more than 3,000 handmade ceramic pots, ornaments, sculptures and more.

Open until 7 tonight.

WESTWOOD ART STUDIO: Not far away, Westwood Art Studio at 9042 31st SW is hosting a multi-artist show and sale this weekend and next. Studio owner is Damian Grava:

He also opened the studio for a reception last night.

They’re also open until 7 tonight.

VIVA TOUR: And you can studio-hop both days this weekend with a ferry ride to Vashon Island, The VIVA (Vashon Island Visual Artists) Holiday Art Studio Tour is happening until 5 pm today, 10 am-5 pm tomorrow and both days next weekend, and sponsoring WSB right now to help amplify the invitation. You’ll find a map at vivartists.com. 40 studios and galleries, more than 140 artists!

WEST SEATTLE HOLIDAY SCENE: Santa at CAPERS Home (and he’ll be back!)

Thanks to Lisa at CAPERS Home (4525 California SW; WSB sponsor) for the photo from the first of six mornings with Santa at the shop for selfies! Every weekend morning through December 21, 8:30-11 am – as featured in our West Seattle Holiday Guide‘s Santa photo-ops list – he’ll be there. DIY photos for donations benefiting the West Seattle Food Bank!

PHOTOS: Kiwanis Club of West Seattle’s 2025 holiday pancake breakfast

8:30 AM: That’s Al‘s plate at the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle‘s benefit pancake breakfast, happening right now at the Alki Masonic Center (40th/Edmunds in The Junction), continuing until 11 am. Only $10 at the door (kids are free with paying adults) gets you pancakes, ham, juice, coffee, tea … free Santa photo, and if you have new unwrapped toys to donate, a Toys for Tots drive too. More photos to come!

10:12 AM: Tons of toys, and as seen above, more kept arriving – we were there about midway through the four-hour event. Lots of people enjoying pancakes, too!

Lots of smiles with the Kiwanis’s kitchen crew:

This runs on volunteer power, including Scouts from Troop/Pack 284 who are helping serve:

Marines including Cpl. E4 Devan Sanchez are there for the toy drive, and Santa is there for pics:

We’re told Santa’s stand-in (shhh) this morning is Peter Gelpi, featured in a recent WSB story about his volunteer work in Ukraine, where he’ll also be standing in for Santa on Christmas Eve! The crowd, meantime, is all ages:

Proceeds will help fund the Kiwanis Club’s work with youth – raffle items and the online auction too:

And the pancakes keep flying out of the kitchen – by 9 o’clock they’d sent out 10 takeout orders too!

Next big event for the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle, the Hometown Holidays Coat Drive at their booth on the south end of the Farmers’ Market, one week from tomorrow, on Sunday, December 14, 10 am-2 pm – bring a new or gently used coat/jacket to donate, get cocoa!
