DRIVE-UP TURKEYS: This Saturday (November 19th), you have two options for a free turkey if you need one. In addition to the Eastridge Church giveaway, the WSFB is distributing 500 turkeys and grocery boxes with fresh produce – while they last – at a drive-up/ride-up event in the north lot of South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor), 10 am-1 pm. Available to all, not just current WSFB clients. If you need a turkey but can’t go there on Saturday, they’ll also be available at WSFB HQ noon-7 pm next Monday (November 21) and 10 am-2 pm next Tuesday and Wednesday (November 22-23).

BEER CHURCH TURKEY BOWL TOTALS: This past Saturday night, we reported on the return of a 20+-year pre-holiday tradition, the Beer Church Turkey Bowl, which raises money and collects food for WSFB. Today, we have the totals:

Pounds of food: 1,039 pounds
Raffle Sales & In Person Donations: $4,730
Lane Sale Proceeds after paying West Seattle Bowl: $3,196
Total Funds Raised: $7,926

WSFB sends a hearty public thanks to the Beer Church, which is the philanthropic arm of the West Seattleite-published Washington Beer Blog.

HOW YOU CAN HELP NOW: We asked what WSFB needs pre-Thanksgiving. Here’s the list from WSFB’s Breanna Bushaw:

– Dry Stuffing Mix
– Gravy (jar or dry)
– Canned Vegetables
– Canned Cranberries
– Instant Potatoes
– Crispy Fried Onions
– Pie or dessert

The WSFB HQ is on the southeast corner of 35th/Morgan. You’ll also find donation bins at other locations, including many local grocery stores.

Forgotten Dogs Rescue, which is led by a West Seattle resident, says “We will have Erika Smith Photography with us! Kendall Jones and Kim Sharpe Jones brought back the Beer Church Turkey Bowl tonight after a pandemic hiatus – and they report an even better turnout than pre-pandemic. The lanes at West Seattle Bowl were sold out in advance.

They were selling raffle tickets for items celebrating the Beer Church’s namesake beverage:

Most important of all, the Turkey Bowl is also a food drive, collecting nonperishable food and other items needed by the West Seattle Food Bank:

The Turkey Bowl has brought in literally tons of food over the past 20+ years. Tonight was also a release party for Beer Church Pale Ale, made with local brewers from the West Side Beer Trail – if you missed the party, ask for it at those establishments sometime soon!

COUNTDOWN: 3 weeks until West Seattle Junction’s Holiday Festival, with first-ever GLOWS

Speaking of holidays … Saturday, December 3 – just three weeks from today – is the date to set on your calendar for the biggest event of the season in the West Seattle Junction. What started as “just” the tree lighting is expanding to include not only the return of a Night Market but also GLOWSGlorious Lights of West Seattle. We had a bit of information about it when the call for artists opened last month, but you have a role in this too – here’s more, from West Seattle Junction Association executive director Chris Mackay:

The West Seattle Junction is adding to its annual Hometown Holidays this December 3rd by creating a festival of lights for all to enjoy. Our beautiful lighted trees will be the backdrop for a light-costume parade where community members are encouraged to promenade around the Junction dressed in outfits decorated with lights. We will have our streets closed to traffic, so everyone can enjoy seeing each other and the artists. Many of our local merchants will be decorating their store fronts with lights, and we will be lighting our Christmas Tree as well. Enjoy strolling around, shopping at the merchants and the night market, and enjoy a mug of hot spiced wine or a beer in our beer garden.

Prizes: Gift cards to Junction Merchants for Best Group-$500, Best Individual-$250, and Best pet-$100.

Contestants will be tagged by the artists during the promenade from 5 pm-6:00 pm, entering them into the competition on stage where the crowd will vote for their favorite at 6:30 pm.

Applications are still open for artists to create a costume – go here. Chris adds, “Each year we will build on our GLOWS Festival. Next year we will be adding an interactive community AI light show. Don’t miss it! Always the first Saturday in December.”

Christmas is six weeks away. If you’re ready to get in the mood, this weekend’s return of the Peace Lutheran Church (39th/Thistle) holiday bazaar is the place – many of the handmade/fair-trade items are holiday-themed:

The bazaar also features a bake sale, with proceeds benefiting the West Seattle Food Bank:

The bazaar continues until 2 pm today, and will be open again noon-2 pm Sunday. If you get there today before 1 pm, they’re also offering free kids’ crafts and selling a hot lunch ($5 adults, $3 kids). Note that they’re not taking cards or electronic payments – bring cash or personal checks.

VETERANS DAY: Pack 282 assists with West Seattle Junction flags

The Stars and Stripes again graced The Junction today for Veterans Day. Thanks to Margaret for the photos – she reports:

Cub Scout Pack 282 set up the flags in honor of Veterans Day at the Alaska Junction with the American Legion.

Above, Josie, proud Army granddaughter, unfurls a Flag to honor her grandparents.

Volunteers removed the flags before nightfall.

Two weeks until Thanksgiving. That means it’s peak time for menu planning, and that’s why West Seattle Thriftway (California/Fauntleroy; WSB sponsor) has brought back its Holiday Taste sampling event, happening in-store right now through 7 pm. There’s also a deal if you do some shopping while you’re there:

More pics shortly. P.S. You can also let Thriftway do the holiday cooking for you – orders are being accepted for Thanksgiving through November 21st.

ADDED 5:35 PM: And in fact, you can get a taste of the turkey dinner during this event:

Much of what you can sample is Thriftway-made – but some vendors are there too, including Nola’s Catering, with tastes of ginger pork:

If you order holiday food, you can pick it up as late as Thanksgiving afternoon.

BIZNOTE: West Seattle Thriftway’s Holiday Taste event returning

(WSB file photo)

Yet another holiday tradition is coming back from pandemic hiatus. The West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) Holiday Taste sampling event returns Thursday (November 10th), 4-7 pm. That’s when the store and its vendors serve up tastes of a wide variety of foods you might consider for your holiday menus; this will be the first time since 2019! The store is at California/Fauntleroy.

WEST SEATTLE THANKSGIVING: Hall at Fauntleroy’s full plan for free community dinner’s comeback, and how to help

(WSB photo from 2019’s Thanksgiving dinner at The Hall at Fauntleroy)

We mentioned a week and a half ago that The Hall at Fauntleroy plans to resume its full free sit-down community Thanksgiving dinner, but details were pending. Today we have the full plan for this year’s return of the 20+-year tradition, from Reed Haggerty of The Hall’s parent DSquared Hospitality:

We are back for 2022 with a full FREE meal from 12 pm-3 pm at The Hall at Fauntleroy!

This event is meant for anyone who would like to attend, and everyone is welcome!

We are also asking for WARM clothes donations (NEW socks, NEW blankets, winter jackets, etc.) as well as dessert donations – mmmm pumpkin pie!

Our goal is to “Fill the van” (we would like to overflow one of our catering vans with warm clothes … It has been so cold already this year!)

In addition to donations, we are looking for volunteers to assist with setup, service, and cleanup on the day of. Please see the sign up link here.

If you know someone who would like to donate, they can bring clothing donations or dessert donations to our warehouse in SODO starting Monday 11/21-Wednesday 11/23. Our business hours are 9-5.

If the trek down to SODO is too much, we will be taking donations the day of Thanksgiving starting at 9 am at The Hall.

The Hall at Fauntleroy is at the south end of the historic Fauntleroy Schoolhouse, 9131 California SW.

 |   Holidays | How to help | West Seattle news | Westwood

Holiday donation-drive season is beginning, and some have asked us about toy drives. We’ll have a list in our forthcoming West Seattle Holiday Guide, and we’re also publishing announcements as we receive them. This drive at John L. Scott Westwood (WSB sponsor) starts today:

John L. Scott Westwood and John L. Scott Ballard/The Madrona Group are taking toy donations/money donations from November 7th-December 15th. We are working with THE FORGOTTEN CHILDREN’S FUND, which works to give underprivileged children and their families a truly Merry Christmas. With the support of our Seattle community, we are able to purchase, wrap, and have Santa and his Elves deliver gifts every year.

The Forgotten Children’s Fund began when a boy named Craig wrote a letter to Santa Claus in December of 1976. That letter never got delivered to Santa’s North Pole, but it did reach a restaurant in Seattle called Francisco’s. The letter immediately captured the heart of Mr. Dick Francisco, and the Forgotten Children’s Fund was created to help others in similar situations. The FCF currently operates in King County, Lewis County, North Counties (including Skagit, Island, Snohomish and Whatcom Counties) and Chelan Counties of Washington State. Visit forgottenchildrensfund.org to donate, volunteer or just learn more about this organization

The kids are under 12 years old. The most-requested items are Legos, LOL dolls, Barbies, action figures, Sonic, Paw Patrol, Lincoln logs, Hot Wheels, unicorns, sport balls, arts & crafts, science projects, etc. We can always use gift cards for the older kids.

Please bring your unwrapped gifts to: John L. Scott Westwood at 2600 SW Barton Street, Suite A-6 (Westwood Village), Monday-Friday 9 AM to 4 PM. You can also use the QR code below to donate.

Checks can be made to THE FORGOTTEN CHILDREN’S FUND P.O. BOX 365 MOUNT VERNON, WA 98273 Questions? Contact Natalie Trius at 206-938-5572 or natalietrius@johnlscott.com

Meryl Sidikman is one of the first artists you’ll see when you walk into the Fauntleroy Fine Art and Holiday Gift Show, continuing until 8 pm tonight and both days this weekend. She’s a White Center artist with a studio in Highland Park, and her booth includes brightly hued paintings including the frog and bats shown in our photo. Right around the corner in the event venue at Fauntleroy Church, you’ll see Rance Holiman:

His paintings include landscapes and portraits. We also talked with Rhonda Porter – a longtime local mortgage consultant who is also an artist; this is her first show:

Work of hers that caught our eye include Elvis (as seen in the photo) and colorful chickens. The full lineup of participating artists is in our calendar listing; you’ll also find artists showing and selling work in many other media, including textiles, jewelry, and metal. The show continues 10 am-4 pm Saturday and 11 am-2 pm Sunday; the church is at 9140 California SW.

WEST SEATTLE THANKSGIVING: Salty’s on Alki opens reservations

When Thanksgiving gets closer, we’ll be compiling our annual list of which restaurants plan to be open on the holiday. But there’s one place we already know for sure will be open, and it requires reservations that are usually booked up well in advance: Salty’s on Alki (1936 Harbor SW; WSB sponsor). They’re now taking Thanksgiving reservations online or by phone (206-937-1600). No buffet again this year, so it’s a three-course plated Thanksgiving dinner (see the menu here), with seatings between 11 am and 5 pm. They’re also again offering take-home kits, to be picked up the day before Thanksgiving.

WEST SEATTLE THANKSGIVING: 2 traditions returning

Though we’re not past Halloween yet, we’ve been receiving announcements about holiday-season events, including these two:

(WSB file photo)

TURKEY GIVEAWAY: Eastridge Church will again give away turkeys and bags of groceries on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. One change this year: They’ll go back to a walk-up distribution. This starts at 9 am Saturday, November 19, outside the church at 4500 39th SW and goes until the hundreds of turkeys/grocery bags are gone. Between West Seattle and the church’s main campus in Issaquah, they expect to serve 1,500 people.

FREE SIT-DOWN DINNER: The Hall at Fauntleroy (9131 California SW) will return to its longtime traditional sit-down community Thanksgiving dinner, free to all, on Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 24). Times and other details are still to come. Last year, The Hall offered free takeaway dinners.

P.S. We’re starting work on our West Seattle Holiday Guide, so if you have an event/sale/etc., the sooner you can send us the info – westseattleblog@gmail.com – the better; thank you!

Plans for this year’s West Seattle Junction Hometown Holidays are proceeding, and this year will bring something new: GLOWSGlorious Lights of West Seattle. WSJA executive director Chris Mackay says it’ll have multiple components, but right now they’re starting with a call for artists for a “light fashion show” as part of the biggest Hometown Holidays night, Saturday, December 3rd. There’ll be a community light-costume contest – how brightly can YOU shine? – and that’ll be judged by five artists who will each create a “costume of light” to wear as they promenade around The Junction 5-9 pm that night. Each chosen artist gets a $1,000 stipend, Interested? Here’s the application form.

REMINDER: Admiral District Trick or Treating returning this year, happening on Halloween

If you missed our previous mentions here or here – the businesses of The Admiral District want to be sure you know their trick-or-treating event is returning, and is happening on Halloween itself this year, so this formal announcement is just in from Brent Amacher:

Admiral District merchants of West Seattle are proud to announce the return of the annual “Trick-or-Treating” event for 2022. The Admiral District “Trick or Treating” event will occur on Halloween, giving families the opportunity to trick or treat in a safe environment on the holiday itself. This long-standing Admiral neighborhood tradition has grown in popularity each year, and continues to be a West Seattle family favorite.

Trick or treating in The Admiral District is 100% volunteer-supported by the businesses operating near the intersection of Admiral and California Ave SW. Each year, local businesses give back to the community by providing a safe place for families to enjoy the holiday. Find your favorite costume, grab the kids, and come out on Monday, October 31st, to join in on this popular West Seattle event!

If you are interested in finding out whether a specific business in your area will be participating, stop by in advance, or give them a call. This event is well attended and most Admiral area storefronts take part in the fun. On the day of the event, simply look for the sign (shown above) in business windows, and stroll through the Admiral District with family and friends.

Trick or Treating will happen between 3 pm and 6 pm on 10/31/22 in The Admiral District.

HALLOWEEN SEASON: Light show to see

As we continue spotlighting Halloween decorations, Ryan invites you to see the light show at his home on 47th SW between Dakota and Andover:

The show lasts about 18 minutes and is set to Halloween-themed music. You can listen via FM radio or a smartphone app; there is also a small push-to-listen speaker. It runs from dark until 10 pm every night between now and October 31.

We’ll be adding this to the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar and then our annual West Seattle Halloween Guide, which we’ll be assembling this weekend – got something we should inckude? westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you!

HALLOWEEN SEASON: North Delridge decorations

We’re continuing to spotlight Halloween decorations as more pop up around West Seattle. Tonight’s photo is from Laurie in North Delridge, who says, “The house is on 26th just west of the Delridge Community Center ballfields. Dog is the scariest of them all.” Got a decorations pic or tip? westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you! (That’s also where to send Halloween-season events for our calendar – you can find those listings here.)

Halloween is three weeks from tonight! Two notes:

DECORATIONS: Thanks to everyone who continues sending Halloween-decoration pics to spotlight. Tonight, a pair of skeletons spotted by Victoria near Lincoln Park – having a garden party. More sightings welcome at westseattleblog@gmail.com!

TRICK-OR-TREAT REMINDER: We’ve had a few questions about this year’s business trick-or-treat events. So far we have two in the calendar – on Halloween (Monday, October 31), The Admiral District hosts its always-popular trick-or-treat event, 3-6 pm, at participating businesses. The day before Halloween, the West Seattle Junction Harvest Fest – which started as business trick-or-treating but has expanded far beyond that – runs 11 am-5 pm this year on Sunday, October 30th, starting with the costume parade. Plus: Trick-or-treating is part of Trick or Trees in Highland Park, noon-4 pm Saturday, October 29th. We’re adding other Halloween events to our West Seattle Event Calendar as they come in!
