During the holiday season, the West Seattle & Fauntleroy YMCA hosts the Giving Tree, which is full of requests from youth who are participants of our programs. We invite you to join our virtual Giving Tree to support our community while also keeping everyone safe.
We’ll be adding these ASAP to the list of giving opportunities in our just-launched West Seattle Holiday Guide.
Every year, we assemble a long list of local info for the winter-holiday season. This year, the list is a lot shorter because the pandemic has quashed many events, but there’s still plenty for a West Seattle Holiday Guide, so we’ve just launched version 1.0. It includes everything from our West Seattle Christmas tree lot list to online holiday events to donation drives and much more. As always, we’ll be adding to the guide as the season goes on. The Thanksgiving list currently atop the guide includes links to the annual “who’s open” lists. So far, the restaurant list is a lot shorter than usual too; some venues offered pre-ordering (those aren’t included, just places that said they’re actually open tomorrow for takeout). We have a coffee list, too, plus info on grocery-store hours. Yet another local holiday event has reinvented itself for the pandemic – the St. Nicholas Faire, presented every year by First Lutheran Church of West Seattle to benefit local nonprofits. It’s usually a celebration in the church’s festively decorated lower level, centered on silent auctions for potential gifts – specialty baskets put together by church members, and gift cards to businesses. This year, it’s an online auction, and it’s happening Friday night (November 27th), 6-9 pm. All you have to do is register and bid! As organizers note, “This is an excellent opportunity to purchase some gifts without having to leave your home.” Proceeds go to the West Seattle Food Bank. But the bidding will happen just during those three hours Friday night. You can register in advance, and preview some of the items, by going here.
As Thanksgiving approaches, so does Christmas-lights season. But as with so many things, the pandemic has changed plans.

MENASHE FAMILY LIGHTS: Usually by now, installation would be well under way at the Menashe Family‘s legendary display on Beach Drive SW. But after driving by a few times in recent days and noting the absence of the requisite bucket truck, we called the family’s shop today to inquire. Josh Menashe tells us they’ve decided to scale way back this year, for obvious reasons – anything that draws a crowd (or requires many helpers to install) is dangerous right now. (And they’ve already been through one COVID-19 scare.) They’ll put up a small amount of decorations this weekend, he told us, but nothing like the usual all-out light show. And after that, if you do go by for a look, the family implores you, please keep moving – don’t get out of your car (or off your bike).
WEST SEATTLE YULETIDE: Ken and Cora Iverson have canceled this annual animated-lights show northeast of The Junction:
It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing that West Seattle Yuletide will be cancelling our Yule light
show for 2020. We had hoped to host a limited display but with the recent increase in cases and the associated increases in restrictions, we feel that we can’t justify the risks involved in attracting crowds. The last thing we would want is to be the reason people, especially the local children getting sick.It’s been a terrible year but we are hopeful that things will change next year and hope to return with a 2021 show. Be safe and stay healthy.

No delivery yet – they’re working on it. … Trees also have arrived at West Seattle Nursery, open 9 am-7 pm daily (except they’ll close this Wednesday at 5 pm and be closed on Thanksgiving Day) … We noticed trees at Tony’s Market (35th/Barton) on Sunday but it wasn’t open when we went by today, so no specifics yet … And if you’re wondering, Holy Rosary School‘s tree lot opens this Friday; details are in our calendar listing.

1:33 PM: Last Saturday, the West Seattle Food Bank gave out hundreds of turkeys, and distribution at their HQ continues through Wednesday – but they need more, ASAP. We just received the request:

The West Seattle Food Bank is in need of turkeys to give out to our neighbors this week. As we approach Thanksgiving, there has been record numbers of neighbors coming to the West Seattle Food Bank for holiday groceries.
While we bought several hundred more turkeys than usual, we are at risk of running out! We’ve served over 700 families thus far and are still distributing food another 3 days. We need your help to ensure all our neighbors can enjoy a delicious meal with their family.

The pandemic won’t stop ArtsWest Playhouse from presenting a holiday show. It’s happening online, starting in less than a week. Here’s the announcement:

As winter hits, the octopus Nia and Lee formed together has mysteriously separated and both have come ashore just as Todd and David are getting ready to celebrate their first Christmas together. With a new problem to solve, and with Grace away on tour in Thailand, all try to figure out how to celebrate holiday love with each other while they remain apart.
“One of the beautiful things about the way Justin writes is that, even though he writes stories that have extraordinary given circumstances, he writes deeply human stories within that context,” said Artistic Director and THE LAST WORLD OCTOPUS WRESTLING CHAMPION director Mathew Wright. “I’m so excited that Justin has chosen to revisit the world and characters he created in OCTOPUS and find out what happens to them during the holidays – and amidst a global pandemic!”

11:10 AM: Second major pre-holiday food-distribution event of the day in West Seattle, and it’s going fast. The West Seattle Food Bank has staffers and volunteers in the north parking lot at South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor) with turkeys and other food for those who need it. This too is a drive-up event – approach the entrance from northbound 16th.
Within the first 40 minutes, they told us, they had already given out half the 500 turkeys (and boxes of fresh produce and dairy) that they brought.
But if you missed it, you’re not out of luck – the Food Bank also has pre-holiday distributions at its High Point HQ (35th/Morgan): Monday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, Tuesday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm, and Wednesday 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, with available food including turkeys and chickens.
11:32 AM UPDATE: The Food Bank was down to the last 25 turkeys but is getting a few more – Eastridge is bringing over its 40 remaining turkeys since its event in The Junction has ended.

9:58 AM: Every year, Eastridge Church offers free turkeys and groceries on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This morning, the annual event is happening pandemic-style – drive-up.
The church is giving out 500 turkeys and bags of other food here (and 1,000 more at its Issaquah campus), plus gloves while they last.
About 30 volunteers are here to help. The line of cars is northbound on 39th (where the church’s entrance is just south of Oregon), approaching from westbound Fauntleroy, and backing up onto SB 38th within 15 minutes. This is the first of three food-distribution events in West Seattle today, as listed in our daily preview.
11:32 AM: Eastridge just wrapped up and had 40 turkeys left, so they’re taking those over to the West Seattle Food Bank distribution at SSC, which had almost run out.
One more reminder – tomorrow brings three chances for you to get holiday food at no charge if you need it:

Every year for more than two decades, The Hall at Fauntleroy has hosted a free community Thanksgiving dinner for everyone who shows up. Last month, its proprietors announced a pandemic plan – takeaway meals on the holiday. But since then, COVID-19 has surged, and tonight they’ve announced that plan is now off:
With the recent government orders, the rise in Covid-19 cases in our area and in the interest of the health and safety of our community, we are unable to move forward with our annual thanksgiving meal.
To those of you who have donated thus far, know that your generosity will be distributed via our partners at the West Seattle Food Bank/Helpline and the White Center Food Bank.
Though it is difficult to come to terms with not being able to gather with you all this Thanksgiving, we are overflowing with gratitude for every person who has shown up as a volunteer, contributor, or guest over the past 21 years.
Wherever you may find yourselves on this day of thanks, we will be holding you and yours close to our hearts.

If you were counting on this because you can’t afford a holiday dinner – three food-distribution opportunities are coming up on Friday and Saturday – we listed them in last night’s pandemic roundup.
With a week and a half to go until Thanksgiving, and the recommendation to keep it small and simple at home, you might be looking for help with your holiday dinner. Here are (updated) seven places to start – NOT an all-inclusive list – let us know of others (that aren’t already sold out) – but what we have to start with:

Reminder now that we’re one week away: Next Saturday (November 21st) is the day Eastridge Church is giving away hundreds of turkeys and bags of groceries. This year, because of COVID-19, it’s drive-up distribution instead of line-up. The hours are the same, though, as announced last month – starting at 9 am and continuing for as long as they have turkeys (and groceries, and gloves) left to give away.The church is on 39th SW just south of SW Oregon, across from West Seattle Bowl, and they’re asking people not to show up early so there’s not a traffic jam.

In honor of Veterans Day, flags are up in the heart of The Junction. The volunteers who placed them this morning were from organizations including Boy Scouts, the Lions Club of West Seattle, Kiwanis Club of West Seattle, and local Key Clubs.
In observance of the holiday, there are some changes today in addition to what was mentioned in our morning transportation watch, including:

LEGISLATIVE TOWN HALL @ 34TH DISTRICT DEMOCRATS: 7 pm online, our area’s largest political organization meets. A “town hall” with local state legislators is at the heart of the agenda, which is here, and includes a registration link if you’re interested in attending.

Another Thanksgiving-season tradition will continue with pandemic modifications. Three weeks from today, Eastridge Church will give away hundreds of turkeys and bags of groceries – this year, drive-thru style. Here’s the announcement:
The Eastridge Church annual turkey and groceries giveaway is Saturday, November 21 and we will again be giving away 1,500 meals at our Issaquah and West Seattle campuses. We are excited to bless our neighbors with these free meals!
In light of Covid-19 restrictions, the giveaway will be contactless this year as a drive-thru. We ask that everyone wear a mask and remain in their cars when receiving their turkey. We also ask that people refrain from arriving too early to avoid traffic back-up on public streets.
Sadly, we can’t provide coats [this year] but will be providing children and adult gloves. As always, we don’t require proof of need for a family to receive any of the services.
This will start at 9 am Saturday, November 21st, outside the church at 39th/Oregon. We’ll check on the traffic-plan specifics as this gets closer.

SKELETON THEATRE: Like so many things, the front-yard animatronic-skeleton extravaganza has had to evolve for this pandemic year. From the crew’s spokesperson Maia Low: “To protect our friends and neighbors (and ourselves!) from the hazards of gathering at a live show, the Skeleton Theatre crew decided to put our COVID-specific show online this year. The show is on the Skeleton Theatre website.” (And above, via YouTube. It’s short but fun!)
WSB HALLOWEEN PAGE UPDATE: The list of decoration locations and no-contact trick-or-treat events on our page continues to grow. Here’s one that serves as both:
That scene is from the Alki home of “Nightfall Orphanage,” presenting “Ghosts of Halloween Decorations Past” – “no contact, GRAB & GO TRICK OR TREAT on Friday 10/30 and Saturday 10/31, 5:30 pm – 9 pm.” Family-friendly. Find it on our list, along with many others – these are decorations up now, so you can also drive by or walk by most if not all locations any time through Halloween. Just three days until Halloween. Thanks again to everyone who continues sending info for the West Seattle Halloween Guide – we weren’t sure we would have one this year, but a reader suggested a list of decorations, so we started with that … added the no-contact trick-or-treat event announcements … and it’s a lively list. Most of the decoration listings have photos, so you can enjoy them even if you don’t go out to drive by or walk by. Some are from locations where Halloween is a big production every year, only modified this year – for example, above is a scene from “Meeds Manor” at 45th/Stevens – no haunted house this year, but decorations you can check out day or night (they’re collecting West Seattle Food Bank donations as always, too).
