9:58 AM: Every year, Eastridge Church offers free turkeys and groceries on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This morning, the annual event is happening pandemic-style – drive-up.
The church is giving out 500 turkeys and bags of other food here (and 1,000 more at its Issaquah campus), plus gloves while they last.
About 30 volunteers are here to help. The line of cars is northbound on 39th (where the church’s entrance is just south of Oregon), approaching from westbound Fauntleroy, and backing up onto SB 38th within 15 minutes. This is the first of three food-distribution events in West Seattle today, as listed in our daily preview.
11:32 AM: Eastridge just wrapped up and had 40 turkeys left, so they’re taking those over to the West Seattle Food Bank distribution at SSC, which had almost run out.
One more reminder – tomorrow brings three chances for you to get holiday food at no charge if you need it:

Every year for more than two decades, The Hall at Fauntleroy has hosted a free community Thanksgiving dinner for everyone who shows up. Last month, its proprietors announced a pandemic plan – takeaway meals on the holiday. But since then, COVID-19 has surged, and tonight they’ve announced that plan is now off:
With the recent government orders, the rise in Covid-19 cases in our area and in the interest of the health and safety of our community, we are unable to move forward with our annual thanksgiving meal.
To those of you who have donated thus far, know that your generosity will be distributed via our partners at the West Seattle Food Bank/Helpline and the White Center Food Bank.
Though it is difficult to come to terms with not being able to gather with you all this Thanksgiving, we are overflowing with gratitude for every person who has shown up as a volunteer, contributor, or guest over the past 21 years.
Wherever you may find yourselves on this day of thanks, we will be holding you and yours close to our hearts.
Oh. the stories we will have to share when we gather again in 2021!

If you were counting on this because you can’t afford a holiday dinner – three food-distribution opportunities are coming up on Friday and Saturday – we listed them in last night’s pandemic roundup.
With a week and a half to go until Thanksgiving, and the recommendation to keep it small and simple at home, you might be looking for help with your holiday dinner. Here are (updated) seven places to start – NOT an all-inclusive list – let us know of others (that aren’t already sold out) – but what we have to start with:
WEST SEATTLE THRIFTWAY (4201 SW Morgan; WSB sponsor): You can order a turkey dinner, ham dinner, or various a la carte main and side through the store deli; the form is in Thriftway’s latest newsletter. Thriftway tells us you have to order by 4 pm next Monday (November 23rd), in person or by phone (206-937-0245), and Thanksgiving Day pickup is available (though the day before is recommended).
WEST SEATTLE WHOLE FOODS MARKET (4755 Fauntleroy Way SW): Order online at least two days in advance, for pickup by the day before Thanksgiving. Here’s what’s available.
SALTY’S ON ALKI (1936 Harbor SW; WSB sponsor): Meal kits for as few as two people are available, with the ordering deadline this Wednesday (November 18th), and pickups the day before Thanksgiving. Order by phone, 206-937-1600; here’s the menu.
PECOS PIT (4400 35th SW; WSB sponsor): Offering full Thanksgiving dinners, as well as a la carte components, for pickup. See the menu here. Order by Monday (November 23rd) for pickup the day before Thanksgiving. You can order online or by phone (206-708-7691).
METROPOLITAN MARKET (2320 42nd SW; WSB sponsor): Full precooked dinners are showing as sold out, but as of our check this morning, you have other options, such as a fully cooked turkey. Ordering deadline is next Monday, and you can order online.
HUSKY DELI (4721 California SW): You can order a “family-sized” Thanksgiving dinner (and other options), for pickup the day before Thanksgiving. Info’s online. We’re still working on Thanksgiving info – but just had a Christmas sighting. Trees have arrived at Junction TrueValue (44th/Edmunds). Reminder now that we’re one week away: Next Saturday (November 21st) is the day Eastridge Church is giving away hundreds of turkeys and bags of groceries. This year, because of COVID-19, it’s drive-up distribution instead of line-up. The hours are the same, though, as announced last month – starting at 9 am and continuing for as long as they have turkeys (and groceries, and gloves) left to give away.The church is on 39th SW just south of SW Oregon, across from West Seattle Bowl, and they’re asking people not to show up early so there’s not a traffic jam.

In honor of Veterans Day, flags are up in the heart of The Junction. The volunteers who placed them this morning were from organizations including Boy Scouts, the Lions Club of West Seattle, Kiwanis Club of West Seattle, and local Key Clubs.
In observance of the holiday, there are some changes today in addition to what was mentioned in our morning transportation watch, including:
*No classes for most schools
*Most government services are closed, including the Seattle Public Library
*Banking holiday
*USPS holiday

LEGISLATIVE TOWN HALL @ 34TH DISTRICT DEMOCRATS: 7 pm online, our area’s largest political organization meets. A “town hall” with local state legislators is at the heart of the agenda, which is here, and includes a registration link if you’re interested in attending.
Less than three weeks until Thanksgiving, and we’re starting to get holiday questions. So, this weekend we’ll be working on this year’s WSB Holiday Guide, so we’re inviting you to send information. Another Thanksgiving-season tradition will continue with pandemic modifications. Three weeks from today, Eastridge Church will give away hundreds of turkeys and bags of groceries – this year, drive-thru style. Here’s the announcement:
The Eastridge Church annual turkey and groceries giveaway is Saturday, November 21 and we will again be giving away 1,500 meals at our Issaquah and West Seattle campuses. We are excited to bless our neighbors with these free meals!
In light of Covid-19 restrictions, the giveaway will be contactless this year as a drive-thru. We ask that everyone wear a mask and remain in their cars when receiving their turkey. We also ask that people refrain from arriving too early to avoid traffic back-up on public streets.
Sadly, we can’t provide coats [this year] but will be providing children and adult gloves. As always, we don’t require proof of need for a family to receive any of the services.
This will start at 9 am Saturday, November 21st, outside the church at 39th/Oregon. We’ll check on the traffic-plan specifics as this gets closer.

SKELETON THEATRE: Like so many things, the front-yard animatronic-skeleton extravaganza has had to evolve for this pandemic year. From the crew’s spokesperson Maia Low: “To protect our friends and neighbors (and ourselves!) from the hazards of gathering at a live show, the Skeleton Theatre crew decided to put our COVID-specific show online this year. The show is on the Skeleton Theatre website.” (And above, via YouTube. It’s short but fun!)

Just three days until Halloween. Thanks again to everyone who continues sending info for the West Seattle Halloween Guide – we weren’t sure we would have one this year, but a reader suggested a list of decorations, so we started with that … added the no-contact trick-or-treat event announcements … and it’s a lively list. Most of the decoration listings have photos, so you can enjoy them even if you don’t go out to drive by or walk by. Some are from locations where Halloween is a big production every year, only modified this year – for example, above is a scene from “Meeds Manor” at 45th/Stevens – no haunted house this year, but decorations you can check out day or night (they’re collecting West Seattle Food Bank donations as always, too). One holiday tradition won’t be happening but will be replaced by something else fun. Starting today, West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) is launching a holiday-giving event in which you have a chance to get a gift as well as give one. Here’s the announcement:
Locally owned West Seattle Thriftway announced that due to COVID-19 they will not be hosting their long-running “Holiday Taste” this year. Instead they will be hosting a holiday giving event with a goal to raise at least $40,000 for the West Seattle Food Bank.

For the last 22 years West Seattle Thriftway along with its vendor partners has presented a Holiday Taste event showcasing new and specialty items for the holiday season. The event featured over 40 vendors, more than 150 items, and was enjoyed by several hundred customers each year. This year due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are forced to cancel this yearly event. In its place we have worked with our vendors to create a Holiday Giving Event to “do something big” for the West Seattle Food Bank and at the same time provide some of our customers with a unique holiday sample experience. With the help of over 60 vendors, we have compiled 50 amazing “Holiday Bounty Boxes” full of special products with an estimated value of over $500 each. Customers will be able to enter a raffle for the boxes with a $5 donation per ticket, and all ticket sales will benefit the West Seattle
Food Bank.With the help of our community and our generous vendors our goal is to raise $40,000 for the food bank. West Seattle Thriftway will match all donations up to $20,000. “We have an amazing opportunity to do a lot of good for our community. Use of the food bank’s services has increased dramatically due to COVID-19, and they are seeing many people who have never needed to use their services before. Their mobile food delivery service has increased by 300% alone since March. We hope that the community comes out big for this event and demonstrates what the food bank’s motto is; neighbors helping neighbors.”
West Seattle Thriftway was founded in 1988 by Paul and Connie Kapioski. The store is located at the intersection of California Ave. SW and Fauntleroy Way SW in West Seattle’s Morgan Junction.

In an effort to bring some fun to the dwindling daylight, throughout the week of October 26-30, The Fauntleroy Community Association is sponsoring a community pumpkin hunt. If you search around the Endolyne/Fauntleroy area, you may find a white pumpkin — or even a beautiful blown glass pumpkin — with a note attached. Some even include a gift certificate for use at our local merchants, compliments of the FCA board members. We hope you’ll participate. We encourage you to take your pumpkin home with you, then take a picture of yourself with your pumpkin, and post it on social media, with #FCApumpkins

GRACE CHURCH: The church at 10323 28th SW is having a Fall Festival on Halloween, with afternoon drive-thru trunk-or-treating followed by a drive-in movie:

Halloween is two weeks from tonight. The Duwamish Tribe Longhouse has just announced that it’ll welcome trick-or-treaters in pandemic-era style, with drive-up trick-or-treating. 2-5 pm on Halloween (Saturday, October 31st), you’re welcome to drive/ride into the Longhouse’s parking lot at 4705 West Marginal Way SW to get a “Halloween goodie bag.” Just one thing the Longhouse asks in return: “It’s critical that we keep our communities safe this holiday season, so please wear a mask in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines.”

When we mentioned this last week, a comment discussion spun off on the topic of trick-or-treating, and whether families plan to do it this year. Opinions were mixed. We’ve since heard from one reader “wondering what the consensus is around trick or treating? … We plan on lowering candy down in a bucket from our deck into our yard.” Public Health-Seattle King County is recommending “other options,” but if you do decide to trick-or-treat and/or hand out treats, the agency has some safety tips. What’s your plan?
Thanks to Forest for the reminder to remind you that there’s no USPS mail today, and post offices are closed, because of the federal holiday for Columbus Day; it’s a bank holiday, too (though not a mandatory observance). At the local/state level, though, this is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, without closures (aside from the ongoing pandemic-related changes).
Halloween is three weeks from tomorrow. In this year when so many have already made displays for passersby to enjoy, from chalk art to window-dwelling bears and beyond, we’re already noticing more Halloween decorations than usual. And we’ve received a few requests to provide a Halloween version of what we usually do at Christmastime. “It would be awesome to have a list of houses decked out for Halloween that we could drive by,” suggested Jenny via email. So if you have – or are going to have – or see someone else with – a well-decorated house/yard/apartment window/business … let us know.
