If you know a veteran who is or is at imminent risk to being homeless please make a call to 877-4AID-VET (424-3838) to be connected 24/7 with VA’s service to overcome or prevent homelessness.

Happening now: Santa’s in the house in The Junction

A bit of wariness in one of the earliest visitors to Santa’s House this morning in The Junction. It’s the grand finale for this year’s Hometown Holidays (presented by the West Seattle Junction Association, co-sponsored by WSB) and the house is a festively decorated tent on the southwest corner:

The classic Northwest greenery is courtesy of West Seattle Nursery, and the folks at WestSide Baby have barrels for donations – diapers, especially! – if you’re headed that way. Santa’s there for bring-your-own-camera photos until 2 pm, which is also closing time for the West Seattle Farmers’ Market a few steps further west – featuring snowflake-making for young shoppers, as well as a full lineup of pre-holiday food and drink. STEM Gingerbread Awards

See what they built! Thanks to Susie and the K-5 STEM PTA for sharing that slide deck of photos from a pre-holiday project they thought you might want to see:

The K-5 STEM PTA challenged classrooms to create a team-based, collaborative structures for our first annual Gingerbread House Engineering Expo. We had participation from 11 class teams and the results were creative, artful, festive and FUN! Teachers had no limits except their imaginations and each team was given a “starter kit” of materials. Many classrooms continued with themes they have been studying, including geometry, architecture, native bird species and literary themes. All participating classes received an award for their work such as “Most Epic Implosion,” “Most Spellbinding,” and “Best Ecosystem.” Great job, STEM owls!

P.S. In case you’re not already quite well aware – STEM and all other Seattle Public Schools are on winter break until Monday, January 5th.

Today was one of the happiest days of the holiday season at the West Seattle Food Bank – the day that visitors from Nucor bring food and money donated by the steel mill and its employees. The food, for example, totaled more than a ton, unloaded with volunteer help as usual:

Along with the food came checks totaling $21,575, including more than $15,000 from Nucor itself.

The money means WSFB can buy more food, to add to what it’s been getting from food drives and regular donors.

We’re told the WS Food Bank is doing OK on holiday turkeys for Christmas, thanks to donors, but overall, the need all around, all year long, is always great – so your donations are always welcome. And spot food drives are still under way – be sure to bring a can (or two!) for the collection bin at West Seattle Lights/Helmstetler Family Christmas Spectacular, and for the mini-food drive at the Menashe Family Lights tomorrow night while “Santa Al” visits, 6 to 10 pm.

Still plenty of time for you to add those in need to your holiday-gift list, as did students at Holy Rosary School. We were there on Thursday as they presented their donations at the altar of Holy Rosary Church, where students held signs showing the donations’ destinations:

That was a prelude to deliveries to be made by some of the 8th graders along with HRS principal George Hofbauer, who was in the church to receive some of the donations:

With a week to go until Christmas Eve, a little extra holiday cheer emerges almost everywhere you look – and listen. Tonight, Shorewood Foursquare Church‘s Ignition Youth Group kept its promise to head out on a caroling journey, walking to Westwood Village, where we caught up with them:

Along with giving the gift of song, they handed out candy canes with an invitation to their church’s Christmas Eve service (one of a dozen churches listed in the “services” section of the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide – if yours isn’t, please get us the info ASAP!).

If you are in the vicinity of 45th/Andover/Dakota, you might have seen/heard carolers tonight. No, you weren’t hearing things, and here’s the proof! We got advance word from Anna (thank you!) of the plan, and caught up with them as they started their journey. She counted about 40 RSVPs, including “lots of kids,” even these two “elves”:

First caroling event we’ve heard about this year. Another one is coming up tomorrow night – a youth group from Shorewood Foursquare Church plans to head north to carol at Westwood Village around 7:30 pm.

Still lots of time to expand your holiday giving to local food banks and other nonprofits – or maybe you already have, like the West Seattle neighbors who contributed to these successes:

ALMOST A TON FROM BHHSNW: The recent Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northwest Real Estate food drive at West Seattle Thriftway (both WSB sponsors) brought in 1,860 pounds of food – almost a ton! – according to Don Bereiter, who sends out a big “thank you,” along with word that donors gave $682 for the West Seattle Food Bank as well as all that food. “It always amazes me how lucky we are to live in such a generous neighborhood.”

LETTUCE PRAY: The offseason for gardening is NOT an offseason for this food-collection program, explains Jane Taylor:

The food bank collection program Lettuce Pray collects fresh produce from home gardeners at West Seattle churches weekly during the growing season but also picks up non perishables once a month. (This past Sunday) we went to Alki UCC for the holiday food drive and were wonderfully overwhelmed with over 400 pounds of food and a great deal of TP, diapers, and other personal effects. Our thanks to Alki UCC for this hugely generous response! You can see that it took all of our engineering skills to figure out how to fit it all in Kristen’s Subaru!

West Seattle holidays: Clear night for Christmas Ship stop at Salty’s

Last year, the Christmas Ship‘s West Seattle finale – serenading Salty’s on Alki (WSB sponsor) – came on a night so foggy, the caroler-carrying boat seemed to emerge from nowhere. Tonight, you could see it headed here from miles away (after a performance at Manchester, sailing eastbound cross-sound, as we saw while headed down Charlestown Hill). And as the Holy Names Academy Choir sang Christmas classics, the beautiful downtown-and-beyond skyline was in full display, even the candy-cane-pattern lights atop CenturyLink Field. While the Christmas Ship won’t be back here this season (it made two stops on Saturday night), it continues sailing regional waterways – see the schedule here – until Christmas Eve-Eve.

On Friday evening, December 12th, Denny International Middle School hosted our annual Posada celebration. The evening was filled with great food, dancing, and fun! Thank you to all of the families and staff who came to make this such a culturally rich and memorable time!

A special thank you to all of our volunteers, including: Ms. Salcedo, Ms. Amaral, Ms. Olsen, Mr. Garcia, Ms. Brown, Ms. Bowie, Ms. Rangel, Mr. Rodriguez, Manu, Sheila, Kevin, Sommer, all of the Proyecto Saber scholars, Mirabella and the Chief Sealth dancers, and the one and only DJ Vagos!

This is the last week of school for Denny and other Seattle Public Schools pre-winter break – after a one-hour-early dismissal on Friday, no classes for two weeks.

West Seattle holidays: Christmas Ship night #1, report #2

A night of lights and song on two West Seattle beaches. First – it was barely dark enough to see the star shine on the Christmas Ship as it arrived at Lowman Beach around 4:20 pm. Despite the massive Murray CSO Control Project construction setup across the street and in part of the beach park, a sizable crowd made its way to the beach just north of Lincoln Park:

While the Dickens Carolers were serenading the Lowman spectators from the Christmas Ship, Alki visitors were getting ready for the ship’s next stop. Just inland from West Seattle’s biggest beach, the Log House Museum (61st/Stevens) extended its hours to welcome visitors for “Cookies and Cider on the Porch”:

The museum also showed off gift ideas from its gift shop (open during the museum’s Thursday-Sunday hours, noon-4 pm), including the recently published “Apron Strings” cookbook:

From there, it was on to the beach, to await the Christmas Ship and the decorated boats accompanying it – some official, some unofficial. Seattle Parks and Recreation staffers and volunteers from around the department’s Southwest division organized entertainment and treats at Alki Bathhouse, for a party that started before and continued after the ship’s visit. That included bonus entertainment:

Along with those musicians from Seattle Lutheran High School, other performers included the Endolyne Children’s Choir (WSB sponsor). Inside the bathhouse, holiday treats:

And then, just after 5 pm, the Christmas Ship came into view, rounding Alki Point.

Lots of families among the spectators who lined the beach and seawall in the Bathhouse vicinity to hear the Dickens Carolers – the lineup rotates, as the Christmas Ship schedule shows – perform Christmas classics from the ship, amplified toward the shore.

(Hear a bit of the music via Instagram.) After 20 minutes, with the announcer’s cheery “Ahoy to the world!”, the boats headed off toward a downtown marina for a break (and new passengers) before the night’s next two stops. The Christmas Ship will be back in West Seattle for an encore on Monday night (December 15th), 9:15-9:35 pm, just outside Salty’s on Alki (WSB sponsor).

That’s just some of what comprised a big donation for YouthCare, from West Seattle Girl Scouts, this past week. Rosina shares the story and photos:

On Monday, December 10th, Cadette Troops 40890 and 42780 (middle-schoolers) co-hosted the 5th Annual “Brownie Girl Scout Christmas Cookie Exchange.”

More than 70 Brownie Girl Scouts (2nd – 3rd graders) attended. They exchanged cookies, learned about some Girl Scout traditions, made some crafts, decorated and ate some cookies, and sang some songs. And at the end of the evening, we had over 80 dozen cookies, a box full of handmade Christmas cards, and a trunk load of toiletries to donate to YouthCare. YouthCare is an organization that provides shelter and services to the homeless youth in Seattle.

It was a fun evening of celebrating the holidays with sister Girl Scouts AND spreading the holiday cheer to our young neighbors in need of love and support, especially at this time of year.

HomeStreet Bank is celebrating its 1st anniversary at 40th/Alaska in The Junction, and Santa was the star of the party (pictured above, manager Melodie Van Houten with “Santa Al”). They’re just wrapping up three hours of free photos, photographed by longtime local pro Gail Ann. A decoration on the tree caught our attention:

We’re told that little Seahawks “piggy bank” is available if you stop by and show a ticket to a Seahawks home game – if you hadn’t already figured out from Melodie’s jersey (it is “Blue Friday,” after all), the ‘Hawks are big at HomeStreet – you can also get team-themed checks and cards.

We’re continuing to share local holiday giving opportunities, both via the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide and via spotlights like this one, received from Schmitz Park Elementary 1st-grade teacher Emily Veling and librarian Lesley Vannini, both advisers to the SPES Student Council:

Student Council members at Schmitz Park Elementary have been busy organizing, marketing, and supporting a holiday donation drive. One of our goals at Schmitz Park is serving our community, and we hope to do this by collecting new toys to help foster kids through Treehouse. These young leaders hope to help all kids have a special holiday season. So far, we have collected hundreds of gifts for our community.

Reader report: Windblown holiday ‘duck-oration’ rescued

The big blast of wind isn’t expected until tomorrow. But we got a preview late this morning – strong gusts that among other things caused a “duck” to fly the coop. Patricia shares the story and photos:

My wife and I have a large rubber-duck collection and recently discovered an inflatable for Christmas – a rubber duck with a Santa cap. Only thing was that there was only 1 in Washington, in Puyallup. I drove down the next day to adopt it and proudly display in our yard.

Today, with the high winds, I heard a loud noise and discovered the duck was gone!!!! Had someone stolen it???

After a quick search I saw yellow through the houses. The duck had flown the coop, over our house and into the trees on our slope!! I couldn’t reach it and it was tangled in the trees. Then I noticed it… a utility truck with a cherry picker was just up the street. I scooted over to the nice gentleman and asked him the strangest question.. “Can you help me get my duck out of the trees?”

The nice man was Sean, and he turned his truck around and lined it up to the swinging duck.

In moments he had plucked it from the tangled branches and returned it to the safety of the ground. I made repeated attempts at a tip, but he wouldn’t take it, saying it was his pleasure to help.

Sean, thank you for your help in saving our runaway duck!

On Saturday night, as listed in the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide, the Christmas Ship makes its first two West Seattle stops – and at the second one, you’ll have extra reasons to celebrate on shore. Alki Community Center recreation-program coordinator Marc Hoffman shares the details:

On Saturday, December 13 the Seattle Parks Department and Advisory Councils of the Southwest Geo district are proud to host the annual Argosy Christmas Ship arrival at Alki Beach. Music, cookies, and hot drinks will be served at the Alki Bathhouse. Music is provided by the Endolyne Children’s Choir and Hope Lutheran Church Choir. The music starts at 4 pm and the ship arrives at 5:10 pm and will perform for 20 minutes. After the ship departs, live music continues in the Bathhouse until 6 pm. Coffee is donated by Tully’s Coffee. The entire event is free to the public. See you there!

Saturday night’s first stop for the Christmas Ship and its floating entourage will be Lowman Beach, 4:20-4:40 pm (note that access and parking are different than years past because of the construction across the street); the Dickens Carolers will be on board for that stop as well as Alki.

Don’t know whether Santa lost his smartphone or picked up because he knew someone was calling in with a Christmas wish, but we caught him in the British-style phone booth in the lobby at The Sanctuary at Admiral, where the new-this-year Holly Jolly Holiday Fest continues until 4 pm, presented by the Admiral Neighborhood Association.

In the heart of The Sanctuary – a city landmark that was once a church – you’ll find free treats plus a mini-bazaar with local businesses/organizations including the new Seattle Farm School and WSB sponsor Mode Music Studios, which brought some students for holiday music:

You’re also invited to come talk to neighborhood reps over cookies and mulled cider. ANA is the same group that brings you Summer Concerts at Hiawatha every year as well as meeting most months (resuming in January, second Tuesday, 7 pm, at The Sanctuary) to focus on issues/concerns. They support the 4th of July Kids’ Parade, too, whose co-organizer Jackie Clough of Alki Party Treasures (WSB sponsor) was spotted chatting with Mr. Claus:
