Going to Macy’s Parade downtown? Cheer for West Seattleites!

Macy's Parade in Seattle

(Santa in Macy’s Seattle Holiday Parade; photo by JC Winkler via Flickr)
Well, cheer for Santa too, if you’re going downtown for the Macy’s Holiday Parade on Friday morning – which always ends with Mr. Claus’s appearance – but we wanted to make sure you’re on the lookout for West Seattle musicians: The West Seattle High School, Chief Sealth International High School, and Denny Middle School marching bands have announced they’ll be in it; and when you see the Seahawks’ Blue Thunder go by, yell hi to West Seattleite Michelle Edwards. (Anybody else?) The parade starts at 9 am Friday “at 7th and Pine, then travel(s) west down Pine St. to 5th Avenue, south on 5th Avenue to University Street, west on University to 4th Avenue, and then north on 4th to Macy’s doorstep,” as described on the Macy’s website.

West Seattle Thanksgiving 2012: Fixing the Fauntleroy feast

Michael Chase is one of the busiest cooks in West Seattle today. Actually, he’s not only a cook – he’s a chef – Executive Chef, to be precise, for Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering at The Hall at Fauntleroy. We watched him in action early this morning as he and volunteer helper Adam worked to get everything going for this afternoon’s free community Thanksgiving dinner (noon-3 pm).

The stacks and stacks of pans include stuffing made with 8 sheets of focaccia and 30 pounds of sausage. Then there’s six pans of Carrots Provencale, with olives and garlic cloves in the sauce (and a basil garnish when it’s all done).

Back in the walk-in cooler, 5 pans of homemade cranberry sauce – plus the groundwork for simple pasta with marinara sauce, for vegetarian guests:

Here’s the real secret: We thought we’d find ovens and ovens full of roasting turkeys. Actually, Chase – who’s been with T&TS for 15 years – roasts turkey breasts: 12 of them, split, so, 24 pieces in all:

Here’s where you come in: If you are coming to dinner at The Hall at Fauntleroy, bring a dessert if you can. Not mandatory. Even if you’re not, you are welcome to donate – drop one off any time – the doors should be open now. And again, ALL are welcome for dinner – it’s not just for those in need – it’s a gift to the community that Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes has offered for years now. Noon-3 pm, on the south side of the old Fauntleroy Schoolhouse – right next to a beautiful wooded ravine:

There’s parking behind the schoolhouse, accessible from its south/west side, by the way, and it’s right on the RapidRide bus line. (The Fauntleroy dinner details are part of the comprehensive Thanksgiving guide – and beyond! – on the WSB Holidays page.)

West Seattle Thanksgiving 2012: Good morning!

As the holiday begins, just a quick reminder that if you are looking right now for:

–Coffee shops that are open
–Restaurants that are open
–Supermarket hours
–Beverage-store hours
–Free community dinners
–Morning workout opportunities

…we have compiled ALL that information in the Thanksgiving section atop the WSB West Seattle Holidays page.

And if you’re taking the bus today, Metro is on a Sunday schedule. More to come!

Local students invite you to be part of ‘Holidays 4 Hope’ toy drive

West Seattle’s generosity has manifested yet again in the outpouring this week for flooded Nickelsville – and many other gestures of help, such as donations to food banks. Here’s another chance to give big, in small ways, this season: Chief Sealth International High School seniors Clint Hewitt and Conrad Hill are launching their senior project, a toy drive they’re calling “Holidays 4 Hope.” Above, they’re with the team at JC’s Deli, one of the dropoff spots they’ve already lined up, and they’re looking for more. Here’s their story:

Families continue struggling with the ongoing impact of a slow recovery from the great recession; we asked ourselves how we as high-school students might be able to help.

Knowing how young children look forward to the holidays, we decided to see if we could make a difference for some local families in the South Park Community area. Through local sponsors, we have purchased holiday donation bins that we have located throughout the West Seattle community. Our goal is to gather new toys, books, games and stuffed animals for ages 3-10 years old, to donate to the holiday party “Winter Fest” at South Park Community Center, who we are working with on this project. It is our intention that “Holidays 4 Hope” will continue and grow in future years.

Our greatest need at this time is making people aware of “Holidays 4 Hope”. Donation bins are located in local West Seattle businesses who are sharing the “Holidays 4 Hope” on their websites or e-mail notices to their customers. So far we have donation bins located in a few local businesses.

We have one located at The Original Bakery, owner Bernie Alonzo, who is a great supporter. Also, we have just placed a donation bin inside a new deli right on 35th ave across from the Southwest library called JC’s Deli, whose owner is Jeanette Cummings. I am hoping to have one more spot somewhere in West Seattle area to place a final donation bin that has already been sponsored. Since these businesses are helping me out, I hope they would get new and more customers from their great support. We are encouraged by the response so far, but realize that starting up this endeavor will require hard work and persistence.

So their request for you is twofold: 1. Donate toys at those dropoff spots; Original Bakery is at 45th and Wildwood in Fauntleroy’s Endolyne mini-business district; JC’s Deli is at 35th and Henderson, across from Southwest Library. Join Ms. Forsell‘s third-grade class from Shorewood Christian School, which has already done its part:

2. If you have a business that could host a dropoff bin, contact Conrad and Clint at crhill2013@gmail.com and c.hewitt206@gmail.com.

From the WSB West Seattle Holidays page: Tree time!

Even before Thanksgiving, it’s tree time! We took the top photo at West Seattle Nursery (California/Brandon) this morning, as they continued setting up this year’s trees. We also have heard from West Seattle Produce (Fauntleroy south of Alaska), which has trees and will be open 9 am-9 pm daily (after Thanksgiving) through December 23rd. And trees are on sale at Junction TrueValue (Edmunds/44th). On Friday, even more tree lots open for the season – the Holy Rosary School Tree Lot (on the north side of the 42nd/Genesee school again this year) and Tony’s Market (35th and Barton); on Saturday, Son-In-Law Tree Farm opens in the old Charlestown Café lot (California/Charlestown). We’ll be checking for others, and continuing to update the list that is part of our comprehensive West Seattle holiday-event/information guide.

West Seattle Thanksgiving: Free feasts; restaurants/stores; more

Two days till Thanksgiving! From the WSB West Seattle Holidays page, and updates we’ve received, some reminders today:

DONATE DESSERTS FOR HALL AT FAUNTLEROY’S FREE DINNER: West Seattle’s most famous free holiday meal is at The Hall at Fauntleroy on Thursday afternoon, noon-3 pm. They have the volunteer help and the main/side dishes – but what they REALLY need, we’re reminded by Carol from Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering, is donated desserts, whether you’re going to the dinner or not. You can drop off a dessert donation tomorrow (Wednesday) between 10 am and 3 pm, or after 9 am on Thanksgiving Day. The Hall is on the south side of the Fauntleroy Schoolhouse at 9131 California SW.

ANOTHER FREE THANKSGIVING DINNER: If you’re planning to dine a little later but would like to take advantage of a free feast just the same, join the West Seattle Eagles, whose annual “Thanksgiving to Remember” is 2-5 pm at their HQ next to the post office in The Junction.

LOOKING FOR A RESTAURANT OPEN THANKSGIVING? Here’s our list so far – we’ve made dozens of calls, but please let us know if something’s missing, or changed – editor@westseattleblog.com

WONDERING WHICH WEST SEATTLE GROCERY STORES ARE OPEN THANKSGIVING DAY? Here’s our list with that info.

FOOD BANK HELP BEFORE THE HOLIDAY: Here again are our updates on the West Seattle Food Bank and White Center Food Bank, both of whom are accepting donations through tomorrow (or, follow those links to their websites and give cash, which goes even further):
–WS Food Bank here – they tell WSB today that they need “canned hams for distribution to homeless communities”
–WC Food Bank here – they tell WSB today that the big need is “turkeys, turkeys, turkeys”

Again, all of this and MUCH more (including Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s info) is on the WSB Holidays page – which you can find any time from its red-type tab atop the page.

Video: West Seattle Lights start Friday – see a preview run!

Good news for West Seattle Lights-lovers … Monday’s mini-windstorm didn’t wreak too much havoc with designer Jim Winder‘s setup at the Helmstetler Family Christmas Spectacular HQ on SW Charlestown, across from the water tower. Just one star was damaged, Jim told us last night. In fact, despite the resurgent rain, he kept an early-evening appointment with WSB to run through one lights-synched song, which you can see in our clip above. (The audio’s somewhat muddied by the rain and wind, but the lights are big and bright!)

Some things you’ll want to know, especially if you missed our November 1st preview report:
-The lights launch Friday night; the schedule is on the official website – note the “special shows” for Christmas Eve/Day and New Year’s Eve (which is the final night of the season).
-The official lighting ceremony is Saturday night, with the free Judy Pancoast concert, at 7 pm. DIFFERENT THIS YEAR: Charlestown will be blocked off, that night only, for that block only – so come enjoy the block-party atmosphere! And bring donations for the West Seattle Food Bank; you can also make cash donations, which will be split between WS Food Bank and NW Parkinson’s Foundation (as explained on this webpage – where you also can donate $ any time).

How many lights? Jim is STILL adding them. You’ll find plenty of numbers on the website’s “Fun Facts” page, but there might not be a final tally till showtime! This is the fourth year we’ve covered this extravaganza, which keeps getting literally bigger and brighter.

Holiday hunger-fighting: Beer Church Turkey Bowl; White Center Food Bank on the road

On the holiday hunger-fighting front … first, a few scenes from the Beer Church Turkey Bowl:

That’s West Seattle Food Bank‘s Charlie Workman during last night’s benefit at WS Bowl, as he rolled what turned out to be a strike:

According to the Beer Church Facebook page, Mission won the trophy … and the WS Food Bank is the big winner. Congrats again to tireless organizers Kendall and Kim Jones:

Their update says the final tally’s not in yet, but expects it to amount to “thousands and thousands” of donated dollars and pounds (of food).

This morning, we checked in on the White Center Food Bank‘s turkey collection, which hit the road for a pre-Thanksgiving dropoff stop outside Fauntleroy Church:

WC Food Bank executive director Rick Jump was there loading donated turkeys into the refrigerated van. He told us they’d seen a good turnout of donors during the dropoff window. You can also drop off food the next few days – and just as important, volunteer some hours to get it distributed – here are the specifics.

And robotics-team members are on hand as an added attraction – in our photo are SLHS junior Carina Andrews and senior Tyler Andrews. The bazaar has filled the gym:

Less than a week till Thanksgiving and the holidays are rushing in. Our annual WSB West Seattle Holiday Events/Info page will be up soon as a one-stop shop for all the events/dates you’re looking for (have you sent us YOUR holiday event/s yet? thanks! editor@westseattleblog.com) – and in the meantime, we now have a slate of holiday lighting ceremonies you can plan on attending:

WEST SEATTLE LIGHTS/HELMSTETLER SPECTACULAR: Just a reminder that, as first reported here two weeks ago, the popular synched-to-music light show on SW Charlestown will debut with a concert and free coffee this year – 7 pm November 24. (Bring a nonperishable-food donation!)

WEST SEATTLE JUNCTION HOMETOWN HOLIDAYS: The 9th annual Tree Lighting is set for 5 pm December 1st in Junction Plaza Park (42nd/Alaska) – with music and special guests as always. (Here’s the full slate of Hometown Holidays events.)

WHITE CENTER TREE LIGHTING: 5 pm December 1st is also when the official White Center tree at Veterans’ Triangle Park (Roxbury/Delridge/16th) will be lit in a festive ceremony.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE TREE LIGHTING/FOOD DRIVE: Just out of the WSB inbox, Our Lady of Guadalupe School and Parish invite you to “mingle and jingle” December 7th while helping them fill a sleigh with canned-food donations. Caroling, cocoa, cookies, and Santa too, as the event continues in the new OLG gym after the tree (the city’s highest-elevation tree, at 35th/Myrtle) is lit at 7 pm.

We’ll also be featuring West Seattle’s best and brightest again this year – once yours is up and running, share the location (and a photo if you have one, or we’ll go check it out) – here’s how. Not just blazingly lit homes – creative/unusual outdoor decorations, too – can’t wait to see ’em.

Holiday giving: Here’s how you can help the West Seattle Food Bank

Earlier today, we shared the holiday-help request sent by the White Center Food Bank, and sent the West Seattle Food Bank an inquiry to see what it needs before Thanksgiving. Together, both serve thousands of families in this area. We’ve now heard back from West Seattle FB executive director Fran Yeatts:

We will also offer tours of the facility and additional information on Food Bank operations for those interested.

We will be closed on November 22nd and 23rd for the Thanksgiving holidays. Thank you.

West Seattle holidays: ‘Santa’s First Magical Ride’ to premiere

|    Comments Off on West Seattle holidays: ‘Santa’s First Magical Ride’ to premiere
 |   Holidays | West Seattle news

Lots of traditions are returning to West Seattle this holiday season – and this year, there’s a chance for at least one new tradition too – “Santa’s First Magical Ride,” a new locally written/produced holiday musical that will premiere at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center. Here’s the announcement, now that tickets are available:

“Santa’s First Magical Ride: The Musical” is a new tale about why Santa took that first magical ride and his life with the North Pole Elves. It features original music, songs and lively dance numbers, and was written by Ricky Gene Powell and Paul S. Carr III. The new musical is being performed at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in Seattle the three weekends just before Christmas.

The musical is based on the book, “Santa’s First Magical Ride,” written by Paul S. Carr III and first published in December 2011. The book, written entirely in rhyme, tells the story of Santa’s birth and adoption by the North Pole Elves, his magical upbringing, and the story of his first magical sleigh ride. Ricky Gene Powell and Paul S. Carr III are both professional singers and musicians who combined Paul’s story with Ricky’s expertise as a playwright and director to create a charming new musical story with original bluegrass, celtic, and folk music that will make you want to dance along with the Elves. Bring cameras, since children can visit with Santa afterward and parents can take a free picture.

Tickets are $15 and are available through Brown Paper Tickets by calling 1-800-838-3006 or at brownpapertickets.com. Interview arrangements and other information is available at www.yulestory.com, or by contacting Libby Carr, Executive Producer, at libby@yulestory.com; 206-938-8721.

‘Santa’s First Magical Ride’ has a Facebook page if you’d like to follow the progress toward the premiere.

Happening now: Holiday brightness @ West Seattle Nursery open house

 |   Gardening | Holidays | West Seattle news

You still have till 3 pm to get to one of the first holiday open houses of the season – the always-popular event at West Seattle Nursery (California and Brandon). Though it’s a spectacularly sunny day, the biggest draw, during our stop, was the wide array of holiday decor inside:

Along with free espresso and snacks, WSN also has had a slate of presentations – including cider-making with Matt Pope from CityFruit.

Free turkeys 1 week from today at Eastridge Church in West Seattle

Once again this year, Eastridge Church – 39th and Oregon, across from West Seattle Bowl – is giving away turkeys and groceries. Lori from Eastridge sent the announcement; it’s happening at 9 am next Saturday (November 17th):

It is our 10th year of giving away 500 turkeys and bags of groceries (potatoes, vegetables, gravy packet & stuffing) to families that are in need for Thanksgiving, for FREE. We don’t ask that they show us anything or fill out anything; they just need to come.

West Seattle Junction Hometown Holidays 2012: Schedule’s out!

Less than two weeks till Thanksgiving, and the holiday season is shaping up nicely – we have added a sleighful of events to the WSB West Seattle Events Calendar already, and the Holiday Events page will debut within days. Today, the schedule is out for the always-festive West Seattle Junction Association-presented Hometown Holidaysyou can see it here. The Junction Tree Lighting is set for December 1st; Santa photos are back December 2/9/16; mule-carriage rides on December 2/16; and something new – free gift wrap for Junction-bought gifts on December 15th and 22nd, featuring the West Seattle High School music program (performances too).

It’s November – think holidays! Free concert & coffee to launch West Seattle Lights 2012

(WSB photo from 2011 West Seattle Lights)
We know, we know, the jack-o-lantern is still on the stoop and the Halloween candy isn’t gone yet. But November means time to think holidays – and here’s something you’ll want to plan ahead for: A free concert featuring a Grammy-nominated musician will highlight the lighting ceremony for the set-to-music West Seattle Lights display this year! Here’s the announcement from the lightmaster himself, Jim Winder:

On Saturday, November 24th, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Judy Pancoast will be presenting an outdoor Christmas concert at the home of Corey and Taylor Helmstetler at 3908 SW Charlestown. The public is invited free of charge, but attendees are asked to bring a donation for either West Seattle Food Bank or NW Parkinson’s Foundation.

Pancoast is visiting West Seattle as part of her third annual “The House on Christmas Street International Tour” in support of her new CD, “Christmas with Mrs. Claus.” Concerts on the tour are performed on the lawns and in the driveways of the decorating enthusiasts who have become her biggest fans and use her music in their animated lighting displays. The Helmstetler home is well known in the area for its magnificent annual display. This is the first year that they have hosted Pancoast’s tour.

Last year West Seattle Lights collected nearly 1,500 pounds of food for the West Seattle Food Bank and nearly $3000 for both the Food Bank and NW Parkinson’s Foundation.

West Seattle Halloween 2012: It was a dark and not-so-stormy night

The rain stopped just in time for the heart of Halloween around West Seattle – and by mid-evening, a spooky moonrise lit up the eastern sky (thanks to Lise for sending the photo from High Point). Speaking of space …

We stopped by the space-themed Skeleton Theatre (which repeats tomorrow night, 6-9 pm!) – was that old-school phone for E.T.? Big crowd at 36th and Hanford. More on that later, including a bit of video. But we started the evening with trick-or-treaters at Westwood Village:

Wyatt’s Jewelers (WSB sponsor) was one of the stores participating in the shopping center’s annual trick-or-treating this evening. They had a “guess how much candy in the jar” contest going, too. At nearby Barnes & Noble, it was book-or-treat:

Of course the staff chose literary themes – that’s “Sherlock Holmes” at left. Now, on to the neighborhoods … From Sunrise Heights – Paul got this trick-or-treat team to sit still for a snapshot:

Cloudia sent photos, including the next two:

Her greeting for you: “Happy Halloween from the Organic Sprouts Daycare and the Haynes household”:

Next, from Natonia – Dom, in the “old-school rapper” outfit:

At the Starbucks drive-through just west of the bridge, Tiea found this character:

Shared with us via Facebook – this photo from Sarah:

And jack-o-lanterns share the spotlight in this photo of Daniel’s son masquerading as an Ewok:

Thanks to everybody who shared photos!

West Seattle Halloween 2012: Not just trick-or-treating

The six days of Halloween – stretching back to last Friday – have finally reached the big day/night itself. For the list of what’s happening this afternoon/evening, we point you one more time to the WSB West Seattle (and vicinity) Halloween page – with events including Westwood Village trick-or-treating (5-7 pm), the White Center Pumpkin-Carving Contest (bring your jack-o-lantern), Skeleton Theatre (which is all-new this year, as previewed here Tuesday), “Nightmare on 44th,” bar parties, and more. (We added two more events overnight; if you notice something still missing, we have time to make additions – please e-mail the info to editor@westseattleblog.com ASAP. Thanks!)

West Seattle Halloween: Sneak peek at all-new Skeleton Theatre

(Photos by Nick Adams for WSB)
For years, they’ve rocked out – and this year, they’re spaced out. With an all-new space theme, and other overhauls, the animatronic extravaganza Skeleton Theatre 2012 is almost ready to go, for performances Wednesday (Halloween) night and Thursday (November 1st) night on the lawn at the southwest corner of 36th and Hanford, rain or shine.

WSB contributing photojournalist Nick Adams visited last night as the crew got ready for the seventh year of Halloween-time shows:

For Veterans Day this year, say ‘thank you’ with a card

Veterans Day is two weeks away – and this year, it can be more meaningful than ever … if you choose to join in an organized effort to say “thank you” to those who have served. From Andrea Geraghty of West Seattle American Legion Auxiliary Unit 160 – and note that you can visit the Auxiliary at the Harvest Festival tomorrow:

Have you wondered how to show your support for Veterans Day?
Veterans Day is November 11th and honors the men and women who have served in the United States armed services.

Who is a Veteran?
Veterans are people who served in the military (U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard) in times of war or peace.

Who do you know who is a veteran?
Maybe it is your mother, father, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, grandfather, grandmother, cousin, neighbor, or teacher. You can be very proud of them. Many have given much to keep us safe and free.

Have you thanked a veteran today?
This year, considered writing a thank-you card to a Veteran thanking them for their service to our country.

The West Seattle American Legion Auxiliary Unit 160 invites children (and adults) to make a card for a Veteran for Veterans Day. Cards can be dropped off at the American Legion Hall 3618 SW Alaska St (through the mail slot at the front of the building) or if your school is interested in doing it as a school project, we would be happy to pick them up.

**We will also be at the Harvest Festival on October 28th; look for the dark blue canopy, cards can be dropped off there any time between 10:00-2:00 and join us for fun activities.**

Please drop off cards no later than Thursday, November 8, 2012. Contact Andrea Geraghty at alaunit160@gmail.com to make arrangements for pickup from schools by November 1, 2012.

The thank-you cards will be distributed to Veterans currently living in the West Seattle area and Veterans at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

(Cards: Please do not include personal address/contact information; this will not be a pen-pal. Cards should be no larger than one 8 ½ x 12 sheet of paper folded in half (cards may be folded smaller). No envelopes.

Thank you, West Seattle; if you’re interested in learning more about the American Legion Auxiliary, please contact us at alaunit160@gmail.com.
