Happening now: Dogs for Docs fundraiser @ Beveridge Place till 7

The dogs are on the grill and the silent auction/raffle items are on the tables at Beveridge Place Pub, where Dogs for Docs is raising money right now for Doctors Without Borders‘ work helping Haiti earthquake victims. The benefit’s under way till 7 tonight, 6413 California SW (map). WSB’er “k” (who shared the photos) is there and says the silent auction’s going great; she also points out that since the grill’s set up outside, kids can have food too, since they can participate without going into the pub. All food is offered by donation only. Two more hours! (Also still under way – Full Tilt Ice Cream in White Center, Columbia City and U-District, donating all of today’s profits; all three locations are open till 10 pm.) 8:15 PM NOTE: Via Twitter, Full Tilt says it’s sold out of ice cream in White Center.

What happened after Nickelsville? Part of it: “People’s Place”

(9/30/09 photo by Matt Durham from mattdurhamphotography.com)
Four months after residents of the homeless camp that called itself “Nickelsville” were ordered out of West Seattle’s T-107 Park, what’s happened to them? A camp still using that name is currently set up at a church southeast of downtown. But another group spun off after the uncertainty that followed the eviction – unable or unwilling, for a host of reasons, to join the others, but just as much in need of help. The spinoff group became part of an effort called People’s Place, co-created by a West Seattle activist, looking ahead to a fundraiser this Friday. Ahead, what they’re about, and how you can help:Read More

A question arrived in e-mail: Where can people go in West Seattle to volunteer for the MLK Day of Service on Monday? We checked a regional database and didn’t turn up anything in West Seattle, except for the Nature Consortium work party mentioned as part of this comment that Monica added to the West Seattle Weekend Lineup:

Nature Consortium is holding Restoration Work Parties all weekend long to celebrate MLK Day.

Sunday, January 17th: Highland Park Way SW from 10 am to 2 pm
Monday, January 18th: Pigeon Point Park from 9:30 am to 3 pm
Entertainment and refreshments included!

RSVP by calling us at 206-923-0853 or e-mail: volunteer@naturec.org

If you know of any other MLK Day of Service events that could use volunteer help, please share the info – others may be looking for volunteer opportunities too!

Seed’s planted – help a West Seattle Community Orchard grow

Another invitation from Community Harvest of Southwest Seattle: Tomorrow night, you’re invited to the first meeting to discuss a potential Community Orchard in West Seattle. Community Harvest’s Aviva says they got about 50 positive responses to the survey they did recently (linked in this WSB story), so they’re moving ahead with pursuing the idea. Bring your ideas – or just come to listen and learn. The meeting’s at 4 pm tomorrow (Sunday) at Duwamish Cohousing, 6000 17th SW (map). Questions in the meantime? info@gleanit.org

Update: Haiti fundraising car wash till 3; Dogs for Docs tomorrow

(Saturday night note: Michaelle says donations and pledges totaled about $1,500 – about 50% over the goal!)

ORIGINAL 12:38 PM REPORT: When we dropped by Keller Williams‘ back lot in The Junction (4452 California SW), one hour into today’s car wash raising money for Haiti earthquake relief, things were getting really busy – they’d already washed a dozen cars, and have been racking up additional pledges and donations, according to organizer Michaelle Crovisier:

The car wash continues till 3 pm. Then tomorrow, there are several fundraisers, detailed here, including Dogs for DocsDoctors Without Borders, which is on the ground in Haiti helping already, will be the beneficiary of the event at Beveridge Place Pub, 4-7 pm Sunday – hot dogs, sausages, veggie dogs, silent auction and raffle (official flyer here). They’re still welcoming donations for the silent auction/raffle too – more info in this WSB Forums post.

ADDED 1:07 PM: Also just got word of another West Seattle fundraiser. Maria Groen of Sold Home Décor (WSB sponsor), 9003 35th Ave SW, says her shop “is teaming with artist Linda Thorson to donate 10% of all art sales to Lutheran World Relief for the emergency response to efforts in Haiti. This donation opportunity continues through February 7th.” Find out more about LInda’s work at the Sold Home Décor website.

ADDED 4:25 PM: A challenge to local real-estate agents from local agent Bruce Butterfield, who announced today that he will support earthquake relief efforts in Haiti by donating $100 from each home purchase or sale he completes, now through the end of June 2010, to Doctors Without Borders. Here’s the rest of his announcement:

“I chose Doctors Without Borders because they were among the first to treat earthquake survivors in Haiti,” says Butterfield. “And with three million people now cut off from food, water, and sanitation, the health consequences are dire and long-term. I’ll make multiple donations over six months — a small price to pay in order to save thousands of lives. And I challenge all real estate professionals to do the same, or more.”

Doctors Without Borders is working in more than 60 countries to assist people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe. The organization responded immediately in Haiti because they were already running projects there when the earthquake struck. Since then, the international organization has sent additional surgical supplies, inflatable surgical suites, and medical personnel to Haiti. An overview of their work is available online at www.doctorswithoutborders.org/news/allcontent.cfm?id=31.

Butterfield is an associate broker at Prudential Northwest Realty Associates in the West Seattle Office (Jefferson Square). He can be reached at BruceButterfield@pnwrealty.com or 206-932-2400.

That’s one of the donation boxes from last night’s West Seattle Kiwanis-hosted Seattle Symphony concert, dedicated in part to the Haiti earthquake victims/survivors. Your chances to help them continue this weekend, starting with Keller Williams‘ fundraising car wash – rain or shine! – 10 am-3 pm today, alongside their offices at 4452 California SW in The Junction (map).

(photo added 11:58 am)
Other West Seattle/White Center fundraisers are listed here. Also today – divers at Alki Cove 2 (which is actually near Seacrest) will be joining in the Seattle Aquarium‘s octopus census (explained here) – looking for sights like this:

(Thanks to Paul Riggs for sharing info about the census as well as photos like that one by Joyce Merkel, president of the Marker Buoy Dive Club.) Another event of note: The ongoing discussion about Seattle Public Schools‘ new Student Assignment Plan – and any other school issue on your mind – continues when West Seattle’s school board rep Steve Sundquist hosts his next community chat, 1 pm today at Delridge Library. That’s also where, by the way, the branch’s first Vietnamese Story Time is scheduled for 11:15 today! MUCH more going on – all this is just a small slice – check the West Seattle Weekend Lineup for the full list.

At left, a sunny scene from last summer – Pete Spalding getting ready to drive the West Seattle Food Bank van in the WS American Legion Grand Parade. The Food Bank itself has a big event coming up before the next parade rolls around, and they could use a little more help – here’s what Pete (its board president) wants to share:

We are getting all of the final details worked out for our 3rd annual Instruments of Change fundraiser. It will be held at the Hall at Fauntleroy on Friday, April 30th. We are currently lining up table captains and sponsors. The response so far has been tremendous but we do need a few more table captains. Our prior two events have sold out and we would love for the third time to be a charm as well. In addition, we are still seeking sponsors for the event whether it be an individual or a business. Sponsorships range from $500 to $10,000. If anyone would like further information, they can contact Fran or Anna at the West Seattle Food Bank office.

Phone number and e-mail addresses can all be found on this page at the Food Bank website.

West Seattle help for Haiti: Tonight’s updates

During tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk (earlier coverage here), we also stopped by Keller Williams in The Junction, which is distributing flyers for the fundraising car wash this Saturday (reported here last night), aiming to raise at least $1,000 for Haiti earthquake victims. KW was the first West Seattle business/group we heard from, but now the list of local fundraisers is continuing to grow. We are listing them all here – today’s additions include West Seattle Thriftway collecting at checkstands – matching donations up to $3,000 – and tonight, we just got word that tomorrow night’s free Seattle Symphony concert presented by West Seattle Kiwanis (8 pm, Brockey Center at South Seattle Community College [WSB sponsor]) will be dedicated to the Haiti quake victims/survivors, and will collect cash/check donations (they won’t be able to process cards). Note that we also have linked our ongoing list from the top of the sidebar, so you can find it easily. (Also a shoutout to PCC Natural Markets [WSB sponsor], which has announced a $25,000 donation to earthquake relief.) Thanks to everyone for reaching out to help, and for letting WSB know so we can help get the word out.

Special Olympics Polar Plunge @ Alki: Team Smith challenges you

We’ve been telling you about the Polar Plunge fundraiser for Special Olympics of Washington, coming up at Alki on Sunday, January 24. WSB is proud to be among the co-sponsors. Last night, we found out that one of our Facebook friends (find us at WS Blog), Norm Smith and son Zach (at left) are looking forward to Polar Plunge with a special challenge for you:

On Sunday, January 24th former longtime West Seattle resident and current Special Olympics Board member Norm Smith will be returning to the place of many of his wild childhood days to go “FREEZIN FOR A REASON.” Norm and his son Zach will be returning to the waters off Alki Beach in Seattle to take the POLAR PLUNGE for Special Olympics Washington. Team Smith will plunge to show their support for the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR). LETR is a group of officers from around the state and our great country that run with the Special Olympics torch, hold fundraising events at local restaurants, do cops on donut shops, or whatever else they can do to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics. Having worked many of the events with LETR over the years, Team Smith is honored to be part of the Plunge Team again in 2010. All funds raised go directly to the Special Olympics Washington. Please help us better the lives of over 7,000 local Special Olympics athletes. Your donation will make a difference!

Norm would like to challenge all his former West Seattle High School classmates, friends, and families to come down to Alki and plunge with us for this great cause. Registration opens at 9:00, with the plunge scheduled for 11:00.

If you would like to support Team Smith, you can donate directly to Norm and Zach’s fundraising website. www.firstgiving.com/normsmith

If you would like to join Team Smith in the plunge or would like to make your own team you can get information at www.sowa.org/05/letr_events/PP_2010/AlkiBeachSeattle.html

Again, that’s January 24 – one week from next Sunday!

Listen up, musicians: Westside Symphonette invites you to join!

That’s our video clip from rehearsals for the Westside Symphonette holiday concert last month – Symphonette director Toni Reineke says the concert itself was a smash, with 400 people in the audience, up 60% from the year before. With that success fresh in their minds, they’re starting a new season of West Seattle’s community orchestra, with the first rehearsals tonight, and they’re inviting more musicians to join — even if you can’t make it tonight because of the short notice. Says Toni:

We could use a bassoon or two (even a beginner!), a couple trumpets, a French horn or two, several violas, and a couple string basses. Musicians who play other orchestral instruments are welcome too, of course. … We now have three thriving orchestras: a beginning string ensemble, an intermediate full orchestra, and a more advanced full orchestra. Musicians of any age are welcome, but they must be able to read music in at least a rudimentary manner.

We rehearse at Chief Sealth/Boren, 5900 Delridge SW, juniors and strings 5:30-6:30, senior orchestra 6:45-8:15. Registration fee is $60 for this spring session, but we have scholarships available for those in need, especially the young people.

Interested folks should contact Toni Reineke, tonireineke@comcast.net, 206-243-6955.

This season’s first Westside Symphonette concert is scheduled for late March.

That photo’s from last year’s “Have a Heart Day” fundraiser at longtime WSB sponsor Illusions Hair Design – where they’re now making appointments for this year’s “Have a Heart Day.” This year, all proceeds from haircuts that day (men’s and women’s, but according to Illusions, “no chemical services”) will go to West Seattle Food Bank – they choose a different charity every year. They’ll also collect canned-food donations, and people who bring one in will get a chance at a “special retail promotion.” One thing different this year – Have a Heart Day is on a SATURDAY – this is the 17th annual event, and it’s always been the Sunday before Valentine’s Day, but since the Super Bowl is on that day this year, “Have a Heart Day” is on Saturday 2/6 instead, 10 am-3 pm. Prices will be $5 off regular cost; ALL proceeds go to the WS Food Bank – the staff is donating their services for the day. You must have an appointment, and you can call right now to make one – 206-938-3675. Heather at Illusions adds, “We like to limit the amount of credit card usage for this day so cash & checks are preferred.” More info if you scroll down this page on Illusions’ site.

West Seattle help needed: Can you mentor a middle-schooler?

 |   How to help | West Seattle news | West Seattle people

A small amount of your time can make a big difference for local middle-schoolers. Here’s the challenge, just out of the WSB inbox from Romina at Neighborhood House (which built the new High Point Neighborhood Center):

WANTED: Mentors for Middle School Students

January is National Mentoring Month. To celebrate, Neighborhood House is launching the Recruit-A-Mentor Challenge. We’re trying to double the number of our CASASTART volunteer mentors for our middle school students.

Mentors are an important component of CASASTART. Each month, mentors join our students in various activities during after-school hours. These activities range from educational to simply hanging out. By being present each month, mentors become positive adult role models to our students which they may not otherwise have if it were not for the CASASTART program. The time commitment is two hours per month with the students plus some planning time with the other mentors. We ask that mentors commit at least six months to the program.

If you (or anyone you know) are interested in becoming a mentor, please e-mail RominaR@nhwa.org for more information on how to get started as a mentor.

West Seattle couple takes on breast cancer – as a climb to conquer

By Keri DeTore
Reporting for West Seattle Blog

“Congratulations! You have Breast Cancer…” is the headline of the first entry in Lisa Town’s online diary “The C Word,” which she started in September 2008.

Irreverence, combined with physical and mental strength and a strong network of support, has brought Lisa to where she is today — a place of well-being, health and optimism. And now her biggest supporter is taking a big step to help others get to the place she’s reached – a fundraising climb that can use your support.

But first, more of Lisa’s story: After a lifetime of health challenges, her diagnosis of breast cancer at the relatively young age of 43, followed by a double mastectomy in February of last year, seemed both “routine, yet surprising. I thought I was done with all that. I kept looking around for cameras, wondering if I was on a reality tv show.”

Another Jade West update: Fund for, & message from, Wong family

ORIGINAL 11:46 AM REPORT: New information on how to help Jade West Cafe owner Wah Wong, badly hurt when a driver hit him and his wife and son outside their Beacon Hill home December 12 (as reported here December 19). “Family Friend” added the following as a comment last night on our most recent update:

The family has set up an account at Wells Fargo Bank. Anyone who wants to help Wah Wong and his family can visit any Wells Fargo branch and make a donation in the name of “Jade West Cafe”. The family thanks everyone for their support.

(There are two Wells Fargo branches in West Seattle – 2358 California SW and 4314 SW Alaska.) Other WSB’ers pointed out in the same comment thread that two TV stations, 5 and 13, did followups last night; neither has its video online as of this writing. We have a note out to “Family Friend” to see if there’s any more info to share. Meantime, there are now two get-well cards on the door of the cafe (6032 California SW). The driver charged with vehicular assault for hitting the Wong family, Rodney James, has been in jail since the night it happened, bail set at $250,000. (Photo of Wah Wong at Jade West Cafe, taken in early 2009 by Paul Sureddin) ADDED 1:53 PM: Wah Wong’s wife has asked us to share this message with well-wishers:

On behalf of my family, I would like to thank everyone in the West Seattle Community who have sent their support, prayers and well wishes to my husband, Wah and son, Jason who were seriously injured on December 12, 2009. They are both stable at this time and will receive surgeries in the coming week at Harborview Medical Center. We appreciate your continued outpouring of support and care.

Sincerely,
Salina Wong

Gift of life: West Seattle resident honors her journey to health

Another story of holiday giving: We received a news release announcing that West Seattle resident Elaine Cornell won a statewide drawing held by her employer, Umpqua Bank, for a $500 donation to be given to a charity of her choice. She chose Northwest Kidney Centers, where she received dialysis treatment more than 20 years ago, while awaiting a kidney transplant, which came from her sister, RoseAnne Tobelaine of Snohomish (at right with Elaine in the photo below). Along with the news release came Elaine’s first-person story.

The gift I Received and why I want to give to the Northwest Kidney Centers:

Winning the first prize in the Associate Giving Campaign has given me a great opportunity to, in part, give back to an organization and foundation that was there for me during my greatest time of need and express my gratitude for the “Gift of Life” I received from my sister.

In 1986 I was in my third year at the University of Washington, when I learned, thanks to a very pro-active and thorough Navy doctor, that blood tests showed my kidney function was in the abnormal range. In addition to the blood tests, I had high blood pressure readings (which were not normal for someone of my age who was not overweight, in good physical shape and not a smoker) and I was weak.

Elaine’s story continues ahead:Read More
