School-fundraiser season continues. Today we got word that the Madison Middle School PTSA‘s annual auction has begun, with online 24/7 bidding all week culminating in a live virtual auction Saturday.
The Madison Middle School PTSA is a local nonprofit organization serving the needs of children in the Seattle School District and we hope you can join us for our “Virtual Vibes” online event where auction items will be available for bidding to support our school. All over West Seattle, you have many options to be part of “One Seattle Day of Service,” officially announced today fr Saturday, May 21st. This map shows them, along with listings that will point you to the links for signing up. The Day of Service is described as “an open invitation to every Seattle neighbor to roll up your sleeves, come together, and give back, with volunteer opportunities in each neighborhood across the City.” Event hours vary – check the map/list/links for specifics.

Got room under your roof for a summer visitor? The DubSea Fish Sticks – the newly renamed collegiate baseball team that plays home games in White Center – are looking for a few more host families for the players who will spend a big part of their summer in this area. Here’s the pitch:
The team recruits players from colleges across the country to come and play for the months of June and July. The 2022 summer roster is composed of players from 26 different colleges. The players report in late May and play with the team to hone their skills and hope to one day play professionally.
Similarly to junior-hockey teams like the Seattle Thunderbirds out of Kent, the Fish Sticks rely on the support of local families to host players for the summer months, also known as billets in the hockey community.
General Manager Justin Moser said, “Host families are the backbone to successful summer collegiate teams. Being able to recruit players from a broader range of area improves our ability to be as competitive as possible. It also allows us to expand our reach into other communities and give college student athletes an experience of living in our community.”
The Fish Sticks aren’t just a baseball team, though. They require players to volunteer within the community weekly, performing community-service hours at the food bank, with local non-profit organizations, help run youth baseball camps, and do community cleanups regularly.
“We’ve seen host families in the past start out as a safe place to stay, and then the relationship grows and many players become an extension of the family. Most of our former players and their families still have relationships with their former host families,” explained Moser.

FRIDAY BEACH CLEANUP: Friday, all are welcome at this 10 am-noon beach cleanup (mentioned here previously) organized by wildlife advocates:
Volunteers needed! SR3 (Seattle Response + Rehab + Research) and Seal Sitters Marine Mammal Stranding Network are hosting a cleanup of Alki Beach at 10:00 am on Friday, April 15, in honor of Earth Day and to celebrate the first anniversary of the SR3 Marine Wildlife Hospital, the SeaLife Rescue Center. Show your love for all of the creatures that depend upon our beaches & learn about the important work being done by SR3 & Seal Sitters.
Please dress for Seattle spring weather and bring appropriate footwear (waterproof is recommended.). In consideration of the environmental impact of single-use bottles, water will not be provided, so please bring whatever water and refreshments you’ll need. GoodDay Donuts will be provided!
Equipment (gloves, hand sanitizer, bags, buckets, grabbers) will be available, but please bring your own if you have them! No need to register- just show up! Meet at Statue of Liberty Plaza, Alki Ave SW at 61st Ave SW. All ages welcome!

FRIDAY HIGH POINT CLEANUP: Noon-2 pm Friday, Erik and other volunteers are “helping support the High Point Community Cleanup being organized by Seattle Housing Authority. This is a family-friendly, leisurely clean.” Meet in the parking lot behind Neighborhood House High Point, 6400 Sylvan Way SW.
SATURDAY PARK CLEANUP: Rotary Viewpoint Park (35th/Alaska), 11 am-1 pm. Erik and other volunteers are helping support “\an active encampment cleanup that has been organized by We Heart Seattle (adults only)” with “buy-in from the people living in the camp to come help in the cleanup. That said, the area will be a grittier style clean with areas needing cleaning up around the tents (we’ll receive instruction as to what needs cleaning there) as well as over the hillside, which will be a tougher area to access.” They’re also welcoming people to clean up along the sidewalk on 35th, Erik says.

One month from tomorrow, the West Seattle Food Bank welcomes supporters both in-person and online for this year’s “Instruments of Change” benefit gala. It’s happening on Saturday, May 14th, in-person at 6 pm at the Seattle Design Center in SODO, online at 7:30 pm. This is a fundraiser for the WSFB’s work fighting food insecurity and homelessness. If you attend in person, you can expect happy hour, games, dinner, silent and live auctions, and the program; online, expect a pre-program virtual happy hour with chat games, virtual bidding on the silent and live auctions, and the program. There’s also an option for online guests to have the same dinner delivered that in-person guests will enjoy, from West Seattleite-owned Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering. Loop the ‘Lupe – four events in one, including an obstacle course – is coming back on June 4th, and you can register for a discount through Friday. The date has changed for Brent Amaker & The Rodeo‘s “Save the Yen Wor” concert. Here’s the new plan:
The “Save the Yen Wor” benefit show, originally scheduled for Wednesday April 13th, has been postponed due to Covid-19. A member of the band contracted Covid-19 this past weekend and will be unable to perform due to CDC isolation guidelines. The show has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 17th. For those who were planning to attend the Yen Wor this coming Wednesday, Brent will be on hand to MC and host charity Karaoke with Loretta. Also look out for the possibility of additional special guests!
All proceeds from both events will be donated to assist the Yen Wor during a period of family illness and transition. Learn more about the community effort to save the Yen Wor at their Go Fund Me page. Feel free to donate prior to the event if you would like to help.

Next week, West Seattle’s psychedelic-country rocker Brent Amaker and his band The Rodeo perform a special hometown show to help the venue where it’s happening.
They’ll play at Yen Wor Village (2300 California SW) to help the family-owned restaurant/bar get through tough times. Not just COVID-restriction-related – this goes beyond that. There’s a crowdfunding campaign too, and as explained on that page, proprietors Gary and Wendy Wong have battled serious medical problems – for Gary, a life-threatening bout with COVID, followed by a stroke; for Wendy, a fall that led to broken bones and surgery. Both had pre-existing chronic illnesses, too. Now their sons are running the Yen Wor, and the business has needs too, from renovation to back rent. It’s been a West Seattle staple for more than 30 years and they hope to keep it going another 30, with help. On April 13th, the doors open at 6 pm – go sing karaoke! – and Brent Amaker and The Rodeo take the stage at 10. Donations will be accepted at the door.

Also returning this year: The large-scale volunteer-work day all along the Duwamish River and its watershed, to help restore the health of Seattle’s only river. The spring 2022 Duwamish Alive! event is planned for Saturday, April 16th. Even before announcing it to the community at large, some groups have filled up the volunteer openings at various sites, but some openings remain: “Group B” for kayak cleanup (kayaks provided!) and habitat restoration – find the signup info here – and The Heron’s Nest, which is also open to groups and offering children’s activities – email info@duwamishalive.org to sign up for that site.

Can you follow in their footsteps? Those cleanup volunteers tackled a stretch of West Marginal Way SW last weekend – and tomorrow, volunteers are invited to a followup cleanup, 10 am-noon Sunday (March 27th). Organizer Erik Bell sent the invitation:
This is the finishing touch to last week’s extraordinary cleanup along W. Marginal Way SW. Although highly successful, we didn’t quite make it to the S-curve between the south end of Həʔapus Village Park and CalPortland cement plant. This stretch still has quite a bit of debris to get through but I believe we can knock it out tomorrow.
Our work will make the Duwamish Trail safer for bicyclists and pedestrians, prevent litter from further polluting adjacent waterways, and make this stretch of road more aesthetically pleasing.
This is a grittier-style roadway clean (adults only.) Vests, gloves, buckets and pickup sticks will be provided. Dress in layers for the weather; the environment includes blackberry bushes and lots of debris from car wrecks and dumped materials. This week’s weather may make some areas very muddy so wear footwear and clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty.
Parking: We’ll meet in the parking lot for Həʔapus Village Park (4500 Duwamish Trail). From there we’ll head south along West Marginal and clean towards CalPortland cement plant, just under 1 mile. We’ll work in groups and will be practicing safety first and foremost — especially those cleaning on the west side of West Marginal, which has no sidewalk or shoulder in most places. The east side has a bike path / sidewalk for more buffer from the road. Come for as little or as much as you’d like…bring a friend.

The annual scholarship fundraising event for West Seattle’s co-op preschools is a virtual event this year, and everyone’s invited! It’s happening online at 7:30 pm next Thursday – here’s the announcement:

What should you feed those you love? And how can you get them to eat what’s best for them? In this uplifting and practical class learn to set sturdy yet flexible boundaries that can help make mealtimes successful for everyone. Based on her book, Feeding the Whole Family, Cynthia will cover topics such as which foods are worth eating, how to make vegetables enticing, just how much sugar is okay, and the value of sharing home-cooked meals.
Proceeds support tuition scholarships, community outreach and DEI conversations and exploration for South Seattle College Cooperative Preschool (SSCCP) students, families and the WS Community.

In the spirit of Little Free Pantries, Libraries, etc., is Maslow’s Closet at Lafayette Elementary School in Admiral – and you can help it continue providing basics like food, clothes, and hygiene items to community members in need. Organizer and teacher Chelsea Gabzdyl, who created Maslow’s Closet while teaching at Concord International in South Park, says they’re accepting donated items as well as raising money with event tomorrow (Thursday, March 24th), 6-9 pm, at Admiral Pub (2306 California SW).
As the flyer notes, a percentage of proceeds from a special cocktail will go toward the project. If you can’t make it to the event, the flyer (see it here in PDF) has three other options for donating, including through Donors Choose and through the Lafayette PTA.

Other priority donations include: rice (white rice, basmati, jasmine, Thai sticky rice, etc.); sugars (white or brown); and oil — ideally containers that are 5 pounds or less (not bulk).
The Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), our other donations-drive partner, is especially low on blankets, backpacks, and sleeping bags to help keep our unsheltered neighbors warm and dry. We also welcome donations of clean men’s casual/work clothing and new men’s socks.

KRISPY KREMES FOR MADISON MS: The Madison Middle School PTSA is raising money by selling Krispy Kreme donuts. Two ways to get in on it:
1. Pre-order a dozen freshly-baked, glazed doughnuts for $13, to be picked up in front of Madison Middle School on Friday, March 25, between 8:15-9:00 am and 3:45-4:30 pm.
2. Buy a “Digital Dozen” for $13. Digital gift cards will be delivered via email after the fundraiser ends to be redeemed ANY time at ANY Krispy Kreme location.

Three weeks into the Russian invasion, the Ukrainian people continue to fight. A West Seattle woman and her sister, who made it out just as the fighting began, are hoping you can help their homeland.
Kateryna Bakay is proprietor of Bend & Stretch Physical Therapy. She came to the U.S. as an exchange student in 2000 and has been in Seattle since 2010, West Seattle since 2015. Her sister Daria lived in Kyiv, the besieged Ukrainian capital, but has been here since March 1st. Katerina explains that her sister arrived “after 6 days of driving through bombings and artillery shootings. She crossed the Hungarian border by foot (could not take her car) and then her friends drove her to Poland, from where she flew to Seattle.”
They are staying in close touch with family and friends in Kyiv, as circumstances there became increasingly desperate, with food and supply shortages: “Some homes have lost heat so people are bundled up with blankets as it’s cold in Ukraine right now. Children are crying as they don’t understand what’s happening and parents are trying to normalize the situation by taking kids outside during non-curfew hours.”
They are raising money to get help to people back home: “The money we are raising will be used to sponsor local volunteer organizations that are on the ground in major cities in Ukraine, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, where people are distributing food and water to old folks who are not able to leave their houses. Another organization is helping local military personnel with basic medical supplies, such as tourniquets and bulletproof vests.” If you can donate, they have a crowdfunding page here.
Last month, we told you about West Seattleite-owned Cascadia Produce deciding to buy Girl Scout Cookies to include in the emergency food boxes they distribute with public funding. That was good news both for the Scouts and for people experiencing food insecurity. Today, we have an update on the effort, from one of the participating troops, 40171, via Holly Rikhof:
Way back in February – the beginning of Girl Scout cookie season – there was no doubt that we would be able to fulfill Cascadia Produce’s generous order of 2,000 boxes from all over Washington to be distributed via their Emergency Food Boxes.
Our troop (40171) was responsible for delivering 400 boxes of the 2,000 box order.
Of course, now we are feeling the crunch of the supply-chain shortages and shipping irregularities. Through perseverance and creative problem solving by the council product team and our local service unit, we were able to scrounge together the inventory necessary to fulfill the order. Despite the challenges, the final delivery happened Friday!
I’m attaching some pictures of our troop’s contribution, as well as the whole mountain of cookies Cascadia Produce purchased to support Girl Scouts while offering a sweet treat to clients.
Cookies are arriving in West Seattle (Samoas not until next week), and booths are open around West Seattle this weekend. Please support these kids that are working hard to reach their fundraising goals! Ask me what a cookie can do!
