COUNTDOWN: Not just festival food at 2018 West Seattle Summer Fest

Continuing to count down to this year’s West Seattle Summer Fest, this Friday-Sunday in the heart of The Junction, it’s time to talk food! As WS Junction Association (the merchants’ organization that presents Summer Fest) executive director Lora Swift explains, “We’re focused more and more on the incredible food you can find right here in The Junction. With each restaurant offering table service, fair specials, plenty of seating, and front-row people watching, grabbing a bite at Summer Fest has never been better or more delicious.” The first list below is year-round food/beverage businesses with “extended service” during Summer Fest – in most cases that means temporary outdoor cafés:

Easy Street Records
Elliott Bay Brewing Company
Supreme
Great American Diner & Bar
Falafel Salam
Vine and Spoon
The Lodge Sports Grille
Pizzeria Credo
Maharaja
Kizuki Ramen
Seattle Fish
The Beer Junction
JaK’s Grill
West 5
Pecado Bueno
Ma’ono
Shadowland
Coastline Burgers
Talarico’s
Bin 41

Some – like West 5 (WSB sponsor) – get going with their outdoor café on Summer Fest Eve, so come down tomorrow evening and wander! Meantime, for festival days Friday-Sunday, here are the vendors you’ll find with booths/stands on SW Alaska:

Monster Dogs
3 Little Sisters Filipino Deli
Ray’s Food
Frelard Tamales
Bang Bar
Matador West Seattle
Pecos Pit Bar-B-Que
Tasty Craves Roasted Corn
Kenyan Kitchen

Official festival hours are 10 am-6 pm Friday and Saturday – with music and beer garden running later those nights – and 11 am-5 pm Sunday. But “extended service” also can mean added hours, so wander when you’re at the festival and see what you find! More previews to come …

First-ever West Seattle Beer & Music Festival set for next month

Before we get back to previews of imminent summer fun (and other news) – we want to be sure you know about the first-ever West Seattle Beer & Music Festival, which is sponsoring WSB right now to help get the word out. First thing you need to know – this is a 21+ event. It’s happening August 24th through 26th at the Masonic Center in The Junction, offering what organizers describe as “an amazing selection of unique beers, spirits, customized food pairings from local culinary heroes, and an event soundtrack of live music throughout the weekend.”

It’s a benefit, too, with ticket proceeds helping WestSide Baby serve thousands of families in need.

So far, 30 local and national brewers are participating in the West Seattle Beer & Music Festival, with 70 beers, both specialty and familiar. The spirits will be offered in handcrafted cocktails in a special lounge. And the food pairings will be featured in “Sips and Bites” popups “curated by local culinary stars working directly with festival brew masters.” Food on Sunday will include a pig roast, and that’s also Dog Day – when you’ll be able to bring your furry friend.

As for the music – showcased acts include Rippin’ Chicken, Funky 2 Death, Marmalades, and Unsinkable Heaviesplus others – as well as DJ Indica Jones.

“We are thrilled to bring this festival to our community. It’s a very exciting time to be on the Westside,” said West Seattle Beer & Music Festival Association chair Joe Jeannot. (Read more about organizers here.)

READY TO GET YOUR TICKET(S)? There’s a range of festival ticket options, starting at $25. All include a souvenir pint glass, available for pickup at the festival. Limited and VIP ticket offerings are available, with amenities listed by organizers as including “early access, preferred seating, special drinks, private restrooms, custom T-shirts, private pours, and epicurean creations.” Get your ticket(s) here!

COUNTDOWN: Preview the West Seattle Summer Fest visiting-vendor list!

West Seattle Summer Fest 2018 is just a few days away! The streets in the heart of The Junction close at 4 pm Thursday for setup and Summer Fest Eve fun – then West Seattle’s biggest party of the year starts at 10 am Friday. While the year-round Junction merchants, restaurants, and bars are the stars of the show – most with something extra during the festival (outdoor sales, sidewalk cafés, etc.) – 110+ visiting vendors (and organizations) will have booths too, and tonight, while the list is in the process of being added to the official Summer Fest website, we have the names (after the jump if you’re reading from the WSB home page):

At West Seattle Summer Fest 2018: Drink beer, save parking!

(WSB file photo – one of WSJA’s 4 free-to-shoppers lots)

Continuing our countdown to West Seattle Summer Fest – next Friday, Saturday, Sunday (July 13-14-15) in The Junction – tonight, we’re talking beer. Specifically, a new beer that will make its debut at Summer Fest: SOL (Save Our Lots) Parking Pale! We’ve reported before on the challenge facing the West Seattle Junction Association in continuing to offer free parking; the land it’s on, owned by Trusteed Properties and leased to WSJA, continues to increase in value and therefore property tax, which is passed on to the local businesses who comprise WSJA, under terms of their lease. After an appeal, they’ll get a bit of a reprieve, but that won’t last, so a fundraising campaign is launching, and SOL Pale is part of it. Elliott Bay Brewing Company has brewed it, described as “a hybrid, somewhere between a session style pale ale and a hazy light wheat” with a “citrusy aroma and quaff-ably refreshing finish.” For starters, it’ll be available at Elliott Bay and The Beer Junction; watch for more news about it as Summer Fest approaches. P.S. If you’re not a beer drinker, WSJA is accepting donations for the lots online, too.

 |   West Seattle festivals | West Seattle news

That’s the official 2018 map for West Seattle Summer Fest, which will be wrapping up Night 1 right about this time one week from now (Friday, July 13th), with The Briefs scheduled as last act of the night. If you’ve been to the festival in recent years, you’ll notice the basic layout is the same, with a few changes – for example, the newly added (free!) game zone will be on the east side of California/Oregon. The California Stage at the north end of the festival zone is where all the entertainment listed here will happen. And if you get lost or have a question – come see the West Seattle Junction Association staff (and us!) in the Information Tent, marked on the map by the big question mark in the heart of what’s Walk All Ways the rest of the year. Summer Fest hours are next Friday and Saturday, 10 am-6 pm (music and beer garden running later), plus Sunday, 11 am-5 pm, with the streets in the heart of The Junction closing at 4 pm Thursday to get going with setup and Summer Fest Eve. More previews to come!

COUNTDOWN! What’s new at West Seattle Summer Fest 2018

(SDOT cam image captured during 2017 West Seattle Summer Fest)

Now that the 4th of July is past – we’re stepping up the countdown for West Seattle Summer Fest, the peninsula’s biggest party of the year, now just eight days away! (Seven, if you are starting with Summer Fest Eve, the Thursday night pre-festival fun – here’s our newest info on that.) We talked with Lora Swift of the West Seattle Junction Association – the merchants’ organization that presents Summer Fest (with co-sponsors including WSB) – to see what’s new this year. Here’s a taste:

-More local restaurants/bars with outdoor cafés – at least 26 at last count, Lora told us! – so the focus is on local food/beverages, with fewer outside vendors
-More activities for teens and tweens
-Giant games
-More signage to point you to the basics, like restrooms
-The music stage will be a bit further north, still on California between Genesee and Oregon
-Shade tents set up around the festival if you need to take a break from the sun ‘n’ fun

Lots more info to roll out, but we’ll start with this. Festival hours are Friday (July 13th) and Saturday (July 14th), 10 am-6 pm, with music and beer garden running into the late evening, plus Sunday (July 15th), 11 am-5 pm. Since the festival takes over California from Genesee to Edmunds, the West Seattle Farmers’ Market on Summer Fest Sunday will be back in the 44th/Alaska parking lot where it got its start (usual hours, 10 am-2 pm). Music lineup is here; pricing and hours for the kids’ rides is here; other info soon!

Whales in The Junction! GreenLife @ 2018 West Seattle Summer Fest

 |   Environment | Sustainable West Seattle | West Seattle festivals | West Seattle news

Now that West Seattle Summer Fest 2018 is 13 days away – Friday-Sunday, July 13-15, in The Junction – it’s time to start counting down. First up, let’s talk about GreenLife, the sustainability expo/festival-within-a-festival that you’ll find at Summer Fest again this year. From Stu Hennessey:

The GreenLife Festival will focus on the issues surrounding the failing Southern Resident Killer Whale population and the health of the Salish Sea. There are many solvable issues connected to the decline of our local waters, including Puget Sound. We will examine these issues at the Junction Plaza Park location.

Much of the marine wildlife is in decline, (including) the salmon that our Orcas depend on for survival. The 3 days of the festival will be divided into Day 1: What can we as individuals do? Day 2: What is being done with legislation? And Day 3: What solutions are already helping?

This will be very enlightening for the whole family. We will have a virtual reality underwater tour of the Puget Sound with 3D headsets, presented by “Diver Laura” James. There will be a mechanical Orca whale ride for the kids. You will hear a lot about what is being done by our local governments, and on Saturday night, July 14th, we will be showing the movie “DamNation” at the West Seattle Senior Center (Oregon and California). The movie is free and starts at 7 pm. We hope you are concerned about the decline of our native Orcas and will want to learn more about what can be done. The GreenLife Festival is a project of Sustainable West Seattle. Sponsors include Verity Credit Union, Alki Bike and Board, West Seattle Nursery, PCC, West Seattle Electric and Solar, and Waste Management.

And as part of that:

Governor Inslee’s task force on the Southern Resident Orca crisis wants to hear from you. Task force director Stephanie Solien will be coming to the GreenLife Festival on Saturday, July 14th, at 12 noon.

The objective is to present the task force mission and to hear from the public their concerns and comments about the failing status of our iconic Orca population.

Your concern and your comments can have an impact on what the task force will recommend to the Governor for future action.

You can find out more about the task force here; its other members include West Seattleite Donna Sandstrom, founder of The Whale Trail.

(WSB photo, Summer Fest Eve 2017)

Just confirmed by Lora Swift at the West Seattle Junction Association – the ever-effervescent Bubbleman will be back for Summer Fest Eve on July 12th, two weeks from tonight. He’ll perform in the heart of The Junction, at California/Alaska, that night at 6:30 pm, after the streets are closed for festival setup. Even if you’re not much for bubbles, Summer Fest Eve has long been a great time to come wander the streets, and this year there’ll be more going on than ever. Many restaurants and bars will be setting up their outdoor spaces – more than two dozen this year! – including West 5 (WSB sponsor), which is continuing its 15th-anniversary celebration, and will bring back the Yadda Yadda Blues Band.

Summer Fest Eve also is West Seattle Art Walk night, and will include extra artistic touches including the start of a community mural project that will last for the entirety of Summer Fest – look for it near California/Oregon, with artist Stacey Sterling there to guide you. Artists will be creating chalk art on the streets during Summer Fest Eve, too.

P.S. Want to be a busker during Summer Fest Eve, or any other time at the festival (Friday-Sunday, July 13-15)? You get priority for time slots and designated locations if you sign up in advance – the form is live now!

(WSB photo from past Summer Fest Eve – when you can wander in the streets, enjoy music, and more)

The night before West Seattle Summer Fest – this year, that’s Thursday, July 12th – has evolved into a street party all its own, and this year it’s getting bigger. Here’s one way: As usual, it’s also West Seattle Art Walk night, and this year along with the ongoing venues, there’ll be art in – and on – the streets! If you’re an artist, you’re invited to apply to be part of it. Here’s the announcement:

We are looking for artists to take it to the streets and create chalk art for our July 12th edition of the West Seattle Art Walk. We’ll be closing down the street in preparation for Summer Fest, the biggest party of the year! We’ll provide the chalk, the space, and promotion on social media; you will provide your artistic talent. Artists will be drawing on the streets from 6-8 pm.

We will select up to eight artists and close submissions on July 6th with jury-selected artists notified on July 9th. If selected, you may bring up to five original pieces of your art as well as your business cards to display next to your work.

HOW TO APPLY: Email wsartwalk@gmail.com with your name, website, two JPEGs of your work and primary social media handle.

Stay tuned for more details of Summer Fest Eve – as well as the festival itself!

West Seattle weekend scene: Westwood Village Street Fair

 |   West Seattle festivals | West Seattle news | Westwood

From the little train to the big bouncy toys, it’s been a day of fun at Westwood Village. The annual street fair moved to Sunday this year. We even saw a hint of winter:

Among the vendors and organizations … Ginger’s Pet Rescue, with adoptable dogs:

If you haven’t been yet, there’s still time to get over to the center at 26th/Barton … this is scheduled to continue until 5 pm.

VIDEO, PHOTOS: Morgan Junction Community Festival 2018, as it happened

(SEE THE FESTIVAL SCHEDULE – entertainment, activities – here)

11:06 AM: Perfect almost-summer day at the Morgan Junction Community Festival, presented by the Morgan Community Association, spread across multiple spots in and around Morgan Junction Park (west side of California, just north of Fauntleroy)! The performances have begun:

The food vendors are up and running – The Tamale Guy, Jones BBQ, and Sweet Bumpas Ice Cream are in the lot on the north side of Beveridge Place Pub:

And kitty corner from the park, West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) is serving up a benefit barbecue with proceeds going to keep the festival free and fun.

While you’re wandering, be sure to see the vendors and community groups behind Whisky West (WSB sponsor) and Zeeks Pizza:

Along with local business, a few local departments/agencies are there – Sound Transit (got questions about West Seattle light rail?) and the Department of Neighborhoods (kicking off this year’s Your Voice, Your Choice voting – more on that post-festival). In the heart of the park right now – Bubbleman!

Lots of ways to participate, not just watch – like chalk art:

We’re in a row of booths just north of the park, with the West Seattle Timebank, Emergency Communication Hubs, and kids’ arts and crafts. The festival’s on until 4 pm – more coverage to come!

12:19 PM: Second musical act of the festival!

Here again is the schedule for the day. Many activities are continuous – face-painting, kids’ art, etc. – so no matter what time you drop by, you’ll find something happening. You’ll also find public-safety personnel, including SPD:

At left is the Southwest Precinct’s longtime second-in-command, Operations Lt. Ron Smith, who’s on his farewell tour of festivals – he’s retiring at month’s end. On the south edge of the park, artist Desmond Hansen started his mural-painting early and has drawn an audience:

1:08 PM: Speaking of painting, if you’d rather do it than watch, one of this festival’s unique activities is under way – the Splatter of Morgan:

You can come down and blast paint at the canvas draping the fence at the future Morgan Junction Park addition, just north of where we are. Another unique activity, the Bark of Morgan dog parade and contests, is coming up at 2 pm. Meantime, another SPD delegation:

1:21 PM: Every year we’ve boothed at festivals, we’ve had a standing offer: Candidates who stop by get photographed. First candidate of the year, Shannon Braddock, who’s running for the open 34th District State Senate seat, just stopped by:

She and other candidates will be at the <strong>West Seattle Democratic Women‘s forum June 18th and the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce‘s forum later in the summer (date to be announced). Speaking of politics, the festival’s emcee, MoCA vice president Phil Tavel, confirms he’s considering running for City Council again next year (he finished third in the crowded August 2015 primary).

2:14 PM: We’ve had a city official visit too, interim Neighborhoods director Andres Mantilla (a West Seattleite):

And a small but spirited dog parade has gone by:

More live music right now, too – Deal is onstage.

Festival’s on until 4 if you haven’t been here yet!

2:37 PM: The Tamale Guy is sold out of tamales. And the SFD engine that was here, 32, just had to leave on a call, minutes after we snapped a photo:

Medical call, according to Real-Time 911. Speaking of medical, while you’re here you can find out about Good Med Direct Primary Care (WSB sponsor):

Drs. Ryan Campbell and Wendy Hueners can tell you all about their unique model for keeping you healthy. You’ll find them and other local businesses, organizations, etc., behind Whisky West/Zeeks. In the park, meantime, we looked in again on muralist Desmond Hansen:

Thanks yet again to all the kind people who’ve stopped by to say hi and thank us for our work – community collaboration has been what WSB’s been about for more than a decade now, and we appreciate the continuing tips, questions, suggestions … westseattleblog@gmail.com, or text/voice 206-293-6302 any time.

3:30 PM: Final half-hour for the festival. Gary Benson is onstage – mellow music for a mellow afternoon.

Also just talked with a couple more people who stopped by – Donna Sandstrom from The Whale Trail, who is on the governor’s new task force about orcas, saying it’s time for bold action to try to save the Southern Resident Killer Whales; Karimah Edwards from Seattle Parks, telling us they’ve had a good day of talking to people about the future development of Morgan Junction Park’s expansion site to the north. Look for an online survey starting next week, with options for park design and potential elements (we’ll write a separate story when it goes live).

4 PM: The festival’s officially over – but live music will stretch out a little longer; Servants of the Rich missed their slot earlier, getting caught in multiple traffic jams while headed this way from the south, but they’re here now. We’re headed out. Thanks to MoCA and festivalgoers/participants for a great day!

Countdown: One week until Morgan Junction Community Festival 2018!

Just one week until the next major summertime community celebration in West Seattle – the Morgan Junction Community Festival is next Saturday, June 16th, in and around Morgan Junction Park [map]! It’s presented by the Morgan Community Association. We’ve already previewed one festival event, the Bark of Morgan – you and your dog(s) are invited to be part of it! – and other highlights will include the ever-popular Bubbleman performing 10:45-11:30 am, plus live music, community groups and vendors, and Seattle Parks with info about the long-planned park expansion. Another festival feature – food! That includes the Saturday barbecue at nearby West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor):

We photographed Michele and Curtis at today’s benefit barbecue; next Saturday, starting at 11 am, barbecue proceeds all benefit the festival, to help keep it free and fun for everyone. (Sponsors are a big part of that too, and WSB is again part of the sponsor team.) Other food options at the festival will include The Tamale Guy, Jones Barbecue, CJ’s Hot Dogs, and Sweet Bumpas Ice Cream. Tomorrow – we preview the entertainment and activities! Festival hours next Saturday are 10 am-4 pm, and we hope to see you there.

What a summer this will be for West Seattle dogs and the people who love them. First, we had news of the PAWrade preceding next month’s West Seattle Grand Parade in the Junction. Now, the Morgan Junction Community Festival – less than two weeks away – is bringing back the Bark of Morgan! From festival communicator Susan Madrid:

The Morgan Community Association is pleased to announce the return of the Bark of Morgan Dog Show at the Morgan Junction Community Festival on June 16, 2018. Our thanks to Morgan Junction businesses Pet Elements and The Wash Dog for sponsoring the event.

The Bark kicks off at 1:45 pm with the Pooch Parade through the festival grounds followed by several audience applause-judged contests.

This is the 13th year of the popular festival, held in and around Morgan Junction Park in West Seattle. As in past years, the Festival and the Bark of Morgan will occur rain or shine!

Here are the Bark of Morgan details:

1:45 pm – Pooch Parade:

Leashed dogs and their humans assemble by 1:30 pm north of Morgan Junction Park in SW Eddy Street. Contestants will traverse through the festival grounds back to Eddy Street. Costumes are encouraged.

2:00 pm – Canine Contests:

The contests take place north of Eddy Street after the Parade. Contest categories are:

• Cutest Puppy
• Loudest Bark
• Smallest and Largest Dog
• Best Trick
• Best Costume
• Best Owner/Dog Lookalike

Three winners will be awarded for each contest. Contest winners are based on the audience applause-o-meter as certified by Festival Master of Ceremonies.

The Morgan festival, 10 am-4 pm Saturday, June 16th, will also include live music, Bubbleman, and more. WSB is a co-sponsor again this year and we’ll have more info in the days ahead!

Now that Memorial Day weekend is past, it’s time to continue looking ahead to the rest of our sure-to-be-spectacular summer. Just added to the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar: Westwood Village has announced the date for this year’s Street Fair at the shopping center – 11 am-5 pm Sunday, June 17th. The past few years it’s been scheduled concurrently with the Morgan Junction Community Festival, but this year it’s the day after, so if you want to go to both, you’ll be able to do that without festival overload! WSB is again a co-sponsor of the Morgan festival, which will be presented 10 am-4 pm Saturday, June 16th, by the Morgan Community Association, in and around Morgan Junction Park (California just north of Fauntleroy) – live music, Bubbleman, the return of the Bark of Morgan dog parade, and more. Details on both as we get closer.

The lineup’s out! Sub Pop Records reveals who’s playing 30th anniversary party on Alki Beach on August 11th – Mudhoney and more!

(WSB photos/video)

9:25 AM: We’re at KEXP‘s Seattle Center headquarters for the announcement everyone’s been waiting for … who’s playing at Alki Beach for Sub Pop Records‘ already-much-previewed 30th-anniversary party? Sub Pop just announced it! The poster here tells the toplines:

Or, if you prefer the text version, from Sub Pop’s news release:

Beach House, Clipping, Kyle Craft, Fastbacks, Jo Passed, Loma, LVL UP, METZ, Moaning, Mudhoney, Shabazz Palaces, Wolf Parade, plus Caspar Babypants, The Not-Its, and The School of Rock West Seattle House Band

“Special guests” are promised too. We first reported the party plan back in January. It’s expected to draw thousands to Alki for a free four-stage music-and-more festival noon-10 pm on August 11th – 30,000 was the estimated turnout for Sub Pop’s 25th anniversary in Georgetown in 2013.

(WSB photo added: Sub Pop CEO Megan Jasper in-studio at KEXP)

Right after Sub Pop CEO Megan Jasper (a West Seattleite) and team’s announcement, Shabazz Palaces is playing live at the KEXP Gathering Space, and we’re staying for some of that.

Before entering the studio, Jasper told us she’s “so excited” to finally make the lineup public. Updates to come!

9:49 AM: The Shabazz Palaces mini-show has just begun (streaming live here).

Meantime, also announced by Sub Pop, three other events that weekend – not in West Seattle but you might be interested – details are on the special SPF 30 website.

And if you’re just tuning in to all this, Sub Pop reps have been visiting the Alki Community Council and Admiral Neighborhood Association for months to discuss logistics and answer questions, given the magnitude of the event – here’s our most-recent report.

AS-IT-HAPPENED COVERAGE: West Seattle Bee Festival 2018

10:53 AM: As the West Seattle Bee Festival ramps up to full buzz – with the parade coming up at 11 am – we’re seeing other creatures too:

That’s Gamma the python, one of the creatures you’ll see inside Neighborhood House – which is the venue for the festival’s indoor component, at Sylvan/Lanham [map]; the latter street is closed to motorized vehicles for the vendor fair, where we and dozens of other community organizations and businesses are boothing (officially starting at 11 am, but most are set up already); and there’s the West Seattle Bee Garden itself on the north end of High Point Commons Park. Here’s the bright and bzz-y schedule:

And what would a Bee Festival “bee” without honey?

11:31 AM: The Big Bee led the parade a short time ago – here’s a bit of video:

Lots of people here and the sun is out. Dog-friendly, too. Just ask Frankie:

We’re about to take a stroll along the vendor fair – here’s the map of who’s where. Lots to be learned – it’s not just vendors, but also community organizations!

NOON: Live music is about to start, and the International Finger Food Buffet is getting going inside Neighborhood House. And Seattle Fire Engine 37 is here:

About that music we mentioned:

12:17 PM: Back inside Neighborhood House, we’ve also spotted Tut the tortoise:

And the sewing pop-up is under way:

It’s a day to express yourself. Marco has a beard of bees!

12:55 PM: One thing that’s impressed us, boothing here at the festival today – a turnout of all ages, from babies to seniors, and people from all over West Seattle (at least judging unscientifically by those who have stopped to say hi). And we’ve even spotted a bee in the wild:

The bee-attracting lupins are in the pollination garden borders around the Bee Garden itself, where Puget Sound Beekeepers are ready to talk with you about the stars of today’s festival:

That’s at the north end of the festival – all along its west side on Lanham is the vendor (etc.) fair:

As mentioned in our Admiral Neighborhood Association report published last night, SDOT is here to talk with you about the West Seattle Neighborhood Greenway (or any other project you have a question about):

1:24 PM: More music!

And along vendor-fair row, it’s photo op time:

Woodland Park Zoo is busy inside and out here at the Bee Festival, which continues until 2!

1:53 PM: Since it’s all about the bees, we checked back with the Puget Sound Beekeepers for the final word on today’s festival (which by the way is hosted by the Events Committee of the High Point Open Spaces Association). They tell us they sold out of all 21 cases of honey they brought – 50 percent more than last year! – and that the turnout was great, lots of people curious about bees and prepared with good questions. The Bee Garden, by the way, is open year-round for visiting.

UPDATE: Hundreds gather to help thousands @ West Seattle Food Bank’s 2018 Instruments of Change

(UPDATED MONDAY with fundraising tally from Saturday’s event)

(WSB photos by Patrick Sand)

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

“Tonight we are here to be sure all our friends and neighbors in West Seattle have enough to eat.”

That’s how auctioneer/emcee Ian Lindsay summarized things for about 250 people who gathered last night for the West Seattle Food Bank‘s annual Instruments of Change dinner and auction.

The celebration at the Seattle Design Center honored a job that can’t go undone – but, the WSFB’s 17-year executive director Fran Yeatts (above), acknowledged, would ideally be unnecessary. “I am really sorry that we have to do this work,” she began, while explaining that it will make a difference for about 10,000 people in the community this year – some, just once; some, over and over again. Ten thousand also is how many people in West Seattle live below the federal poverty level, according to a video shown at the event.

The stats are eye-opening:

(2017 Bee Festival photo: The Big Bee, which led the parade)

The almost-summer fun has just begun. One week from today, the West Seattle Bee Festival will fill the heart of your Saturday with free fun. It’s headquartered at the West Seattle Bee Garden in High Point, starting with the Honey Run at 9:30 am, and continues until 2 pm. From festival spokesperson Karen Berge, a preview:

HONEY RUN: The Honey Run leads off the festival at 9:30 AM. It’s a free, informal, fun run for all ages that takes place in High Point Commons Park. One lap around the park is 1K. Participants compete to see how many laps they can do, and in how short a time. No registration required. Just show up and run/walk/roll!

PARADE/PARADE PREP: Face painters and balloon twisters will be on hand from 10 to 11 inside Neighborhood House to help get everyone decorated for the costume parade, which begins at 11. Everyone is welcome to join the parade – pets too! No experience needed, just follow the Big Bee!

From 11 until 2, many festival activities will take place concurrently.

VENDOR FAIR: This includes sustainable organizations, businesses, and community groups. Tilth Alliance will be there with their popular worm bin, info about their Master Composter Sustainability Steward program, and the Garden Hotline. Members of the High Point Resource Coalition will be there. Camp Long will be back with science activities — last year, their Naturalists brought microscopes so that attendees could look closely at bees, bugs, flowers, and other natural things. The SW Precinct plans to be there with the mobile precinct and some of the CPT officers. SFD is bringing a firetruck. Deb Greer will be there with info about West Seattle Block Watch Captains Network. New Hub Captains, Robert Landis and Johnny Schmidt, will host the West Seattle Be Prepared booth.

PLANT SWAP: This is part of the Vendor Fair again this year. People can bring their excess plants, seeds, tools, or anything gardening-related … and take home others that they find! No need to bring a plant in order to take a plant!

ANIMAL AMBASSADORS: Woodland Park Zoo will be back again with their live “animal ambassadors.” Their Up CLOSE program, “Pollinators: Little Animals, Big Job,” will be located inside Neighborhood House. They will also host a “Pollinator Party” outdoors at our Vendor Fair.

POP-UP SEWING: This is a hands-on workshop. People can bring torn clothes and learn to repair them, to minimize what ends up in landfills. People can also learn how to make items that they need. The goal is to promote sustainability and the idea of buying less. Last year, many of the participants made handbags or reusable shopping bags.

STARTING AT NOON

Noon – Bee Garden creator, Lauren England will give a Bee Hive demo; Krista Connor will narrate and explain what is taking place and why.

Noon – 2 PM, Puget Sound Beekeepers will host an Open House in the Bee Garden. They’ll have local honey available to taste and to buy. Beekeepers will field bee-related questions and are also happy to answer questions about plants.

Noon – 1 PM, enjoy international finger foods inside Neighborhood House. Free for low-income residents – contributions are welcome!

MUSIC

10 – Noon: DJ Arlo and DJ Nate Prudhon: They’ll put together family-friendly, fun, eclectic international music, “Break BEEts and Dance Music from around the Globe.”

Noon – 2 PM, enjoy live music by Mississippi Jones, followed by jazz with Bell and the Bees.

MISSISSIPPI JONES: Find out more about them here.

BELL AND THE BEES: A group of young jazz musicians from Garfield High School.

ORGANIZERS

The West Seattle Bee Festival is hosted by the Events Committee of the High Point Open Spaces Association. Deborah Vandermar is the Chair of the committee. Leslie Skavland is arranging the food and entertainment, and managing the logistics. This year’s festival is again a team effort that includes Asmeret Habte, Janell Gonyea, Zach Chupa, Terry Hirata, Tram Chung, Megan Demeroutis and others who live or work in the High Point Community.

WSB is a co-sponsor of the Bee Festival and we look forward to seeing you there!
