Do something different this year … delight your West Seattle neighbors by helping make a festival happen! The community members who have been making Delridge Day happen each summer are looking for a new planning coordinator:

2017 could be the twelfth Delridge Day celebration, but it needs you! Yes, YOU!

Do you have a passion for the neighborhoods along the Delridge corridor? Have you enjoyed the Delridge Day celebrations in the past? Can you step up to take on the leadership needed to help this growing festival continue?

It is expected that a new leader will bring their own vision of what Delridge Day can be … but there is help, too. For example, the music coordinator has committed to continuing this year. Past organizers have built a network of contacts and action item lists for organizing Delridge Day, so a blueprint is in place.

A new leader should have commitment; great organizational skills; time to contact and follow up with participants to organize music, food, booths, and equipment; and the ability to build a team of volunteers to assist with the event. You will work with Parks and the city for permitting. Planning begins in January for the August event.

We’ve been fortunate over the years to have dedicated people step up to make this fun and growing event happen. Community doesn’t happen by accident … it takes people willing to build. We are only as strong as our relationships to each other.

First step – contact Nancy, even if you just have a question. She’s at n_folsom@msn.com.

UNSUNG HEROES: West Seattle Amateur Radio Club’s Harvest Parade communication

 |   West Seattle festivals | West Seattle news

Were you at the West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival last Sunday? Maybe part of its bigger-than-ever Costume Parade (WSB video above) – or one of the spectators? Again this year, the parade’s unsung heroes were members of the West Seattle Amateur Radio Club. David Hillier shared the photos and report:

amateurradio
Members of the West Seattle Amateur Radio Club provided radio communications during the festival’s costume parade, with radio operators at strategic positions in the parade. Jim Edwards WS7JIM, led the parade on his motorcycle with installed radio gear. Ken AB7X and Adeline (16) AA7HH followed in the middle of the parade, while Dave AA7XX and Meredith (12) KG7EUM followed at the rear of the parade. Cora W7COR communicated with the members in the parade from home through the club’s repeater, helping with coordination. Radio communication helps Jim know how to pace the parade and provides an added element of safety.

We in HAM radio love these events. It is a nice way to help out – and to be part of a fun event! Look us up online or go to the ARRL website if you think you might be interested in HAM radio.

P.S. As you can see in the photos of the parade volunteers, amateur radio is for all ages!

WEST SEATTLE HARVEST FESTIVAL FOLLOWUP: Big fun, big benefit, and … more photos!

This year’s West Seattle Harvest Festival in The Junction was the biggest ever, and might have been even bigger if it hadn’t started to rain in the last hour.

harvestfestival_49

Rain and all, it was a success, and we have one more round of photos to share – as well as an update from the Chili Cookoff that raised money for the West Seattle Food Bank:

harvestfestival_77

As we reported in yesterday’s as-it-happened coverage, The Westy won – that’s JP Vidican at right, getting congratulated by past winner Jack Miller of Husky Deli. Judi Yazzolino from the Food Bank tells us the cookoff brought in almost $2,000 to help fight hunger.

Meantime, click ahead to see a new Harvest Festival gallery – the costumes, the activities, the pets, and more, as photographed by WSB’s Leda Costa: Read More

AS-IT-HAPPENED COVERAGE: West Seattle Harvest Festival 2016!

10 AM: It’s on! Joining the Farmers’ Market for the next four hours, it’s the 2016 West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival. Starting right now, on Alaska between 44th and 42nd, and on California south of the market, Alaska to Edmunds, local businesses, schools, and organizations are offering fun activities. Everything’s free except the Chili Cookoff starting at 11 am – a $10 donation gets you a taste of each of the eight competing chilis, plus a vote, and the money goes to the West Seattle Food Bank. Then at 11:30, it’s the costume parade from Junction Plaza Park (42nd/Alaska) around the festival/market zone, and at noon, business trick-or-treating begins. Explore the side-street businesses too – ReMAX, for example, has a noon-2 pm Haunted House on the NW corner of 44th/Alaska (that was canceled).

10:14 AM: Our first activity feature – “melting pumpkins” at the West Seattle Timebank booth. Here’s volunteer Cupcake, showing one off:

Thanks to Timebank leader Tamsen Spengler for the photo. The Timebank booth is on SW Alaska across from Twilight, which is just west of Easy Street. Go visit! We, meantime, are right in the heart of California/Alaska, and immediately west of us you’ll find free facepainting:

The costumes just might be the most-fun part of the festival every year. Even with more than an hour to go until the parade, many costumed people of all sizes are wandering. We’ve even seen Darth Vader (and survived the encounter):

This festivalgoer is costumed as cotton candy:

By the way, there’s free cotton candy (while it lasts) on SW Alaska by Easy Street.

11:07 AM: Chili time! That’s the number one question we’re being asked right now – where’s the chili? Answer: Look for the West Seattle Food Bank canopy right in front of KeyBank on the SW corner of California/Alaska. Here are the competitors:

img_0388

Number two most popular question – where does the Costume Parade start? Junction Plaza Park is on the NW corner of 42nd/Alaska, and the parade will head west from there, starting at 11:30. Many awesome costumes this year. Check out Sharknado and friend:

11:44 AM: The parade is making its way through the festival. And this year it’s MASSIVE! Hundreds of people. Led by the West Seattle High School Band:

img_0404

Here’s video from the start (looks like we’ll have to wait until we’re back at HQ for the full 6 1/2 minute clip):

Next up: Business trick-or-treating at noon. We’ve been asked how that works – look for merchants with candy OUTSIDE their businesses throughout The Junction.

12:15 PM: Trick-or-treating is now on! And activities continue. Westside School (WSB sponsor) is one of your stops on California between Alaska and Edmunds – there, you can play Plinko:

img_0359

Coworking center West Seattle Office Junction (also a WSB sponsor) is nearby and has a “critter pit”:

img_0362

Meanwhile, the Farmers Market continues until 2 pm as usual. Many vendors are in the spirit!

img_0384

We have some music here at California/Alaska, too – WSHS Band members, post-parade, are busking, as they’ve been doing to raise money for new instruments. And all the while, more cool costumes:

img_0414

img_0417

12:58 PM: Final hour. The crowd has thinned a bit but still really festive – we are talking with organizers and participants about how big the festival is this year, so many people here in The Junction, it reminds us of Summer Fest. Thanks to everyone who’s stopped by to say hi – from our booth in the heart of Walk-All-Ways, we’ve had a front-row seat for it all.

1:19 PM: The crowd’s thinned further because the rain has returned. Next big thing: Vote-counting for the chili cookoff. Here’s a tweet with a look at the contenders’ offerings:

Still some good stuff at this week’s market, too.

1:30 PM: And the chili winners are:

#1 – The Westy
#2 – Brookdale Admiral Heights
#3 – Shadowland

Congratulations!

2 PM: The rain hasn’t stopped but the festival’s wrapping up.

P.S. We will have a separate photo gallery plus some other festival followups at midday Monday.

(WSB file photo from past Harvest Festival)

Just a little over a day and a half until this year’s West Seattle Harvest Festival in The Junction, which runs concurrent with the Farmers’ Market, 10 am-2 pm on Sunday.

The market remains in the street on California between Alaska and Oregon. Festival activities will also be found on California between Alaska and Edmunds, and on Alaska between 42nd and 44th.

*Activities (games, art, crafts, more – more than two dozen providers – all free!) 10 am-2 pm

*Chili competition on the southwest corner of California/Alaska starting at 11 am – buy a flight (nine competitors), vote for your favorite, and your $ goes to the West Seattle Food Bank

*Costume parade 11:30 am from Junction Plaza Park (gather there starting at 11:15 am at 42nd/Alaska), led by the West Seattle High School Marching Band

*Trick-or-treating at Junction businesses starting at noon

We’ll be there throughout the festival, covering it “live” from the heart of The Junction. See you there on Sunday (forecast so far looks like we’ll see some sunshine)!

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Fauntleroy Fall Festival fun, 2016 edition

img_7116

2:50 PM: The Fauntleroy Fall Festival might be the only place you’ll hear a Prince cover with ukuleles:

The Back Porch Apostles are playing in the Fauntleroy Church/Y parking lot right now, which is one of the centers of activity during the festival, continuing until 5 pm. Lots of kid activities in the lot, including an annual favorite – making salmon hats, in honor of nearby Fauntleroy Creek:

img_7103

On the north side of the lot, Seattle Fire Engine 37 from Sunrise Heights was visiting, along with the local Seattle Police Mobile Precinct:

Another center is The Hall at Fauntleroy on the other side of the 9100 block of California SW. Inside – more music plus the cake-decorating contest, to be followed by the cakewalk. We were totally surprised to see the cake on the left:

cakesdecorated

(3:40 pm note – the truck cake on the right won the “advanced” division!) More festival updates to come – here’s the schedule of what’s happening, where, and when, and here’s the list of food/drink available for purchase (everything else here is free).

3:30 PM UPDATE: Some of the festival activities are hidden gems – you have to wander into the church lobby to find the West Seattle Community Orchestras‘ “instrument petting zoo”:

instrumentpetting

In the Vashon Room of The Hall at Fauntleroy, meantime, it’s cakewalk time!

cakewalk

And on the east side of The Hall, the West Seattle Big Band will be playing at 3:45 – lots of room to dance!

4:09 PM UPDATE: Evidence of that last statement:

The WSBB plays until 5 pm, when the festival wraps up. It’s always musically abundant – in addition to offering the instrument “zoo” mentioned above, the WSCO had a Brass Sextet (plus percussionist) performing in the church’s fellowship hall:

Thanks to Toni Reineke (third from the left) for sharing that photo. One more festival center we haven’t mentioned yet – outside Fauntleroy Schoolhouse, to the west, pony rides, music, a playground, and a petting zoo with goats among other fuzzy friends:

The festival is a collaboration between community groups, institutions, organizations, and businesses, running on volunteer power and donations. If you would like to donate and missed the chance at the festival, just go here.

P.S. Some of the festival faces – first, Fauntleroy Creek watershed steward Judy Pickens, who’s a legend with the salmon hat-making:

Festival partner Fauntleroy Community Association:

The D Squared/Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes/Hall at Fauntleroy team:

And Lonjina Verdugo from Wildwood Market, soon to open in Fauntleroy:

Next event in Fauntleroy – gather to drum and sing the coho home to the creek, 5 pm next Sunday (October 30th) at the fish-ladder overlook across from the ferry terminal.

SUNDAY! Fauntleroy Fall Festival schedule & food list

 |   Fauntleroy | West Seattle festivals | West Seattle news

(WSB file photo)

Just hours to go until this year’s Fauntleroy Fall Festival – tomorrow (Sunday, October 23rd), 2-5 pm, at venues on both sides of the 9100 block of California SW (Fauntleroy Church/YMCA/Schoolhouse; here’s a map). Tonight, we have two things you might be wondering about in advance – the activity schedule, and the food!

Here’s the schedule:

Activities are free. The only things you need to bring money for – entirely optional – are the food and drink offerings. See the list here (PDF) – vendors this year are Endolyne Joe’s (WSB sponsor), Tuxedoes and Tennis Shoes Catering, Stuffed Cakes, Bird on a Wire Espresso, and The Tamale Guy. Plus, the Fauntleroy Church Youth Club will be having a bake sale.

HAPPENING NOW: Autumn abundance awaits you @ Solstice P-Patch Fall Festival

solsticepumpkin

Perfect pumpkin-carving weather as the Solstice Park P-Patch gardeners host this year’s Fall Festival, until 5 pm. They’re also selling everything from dried herbs to plants to treats – this is just one of the tables:

saletble

And if you wander uphill into the P-Patch itself, you can admire fall flowers like these:

betterprettyflowers

Like all P-Patches, this one is managed by its own (volunteer) gardeners, but not all have special events like this one. The plants, by the way, include starts for your own garden as well as perennials – go see for yourself next to the tennis courts at 7400 Fauntleroy Way SW before the afternoon ends!

This will of course be on our Saturday highlights list but in case you’re up tonight looking ahead to tomorrow … the Solstice Park P-Patch gardeners rescheduled their Fall Festival because of last weekend’s weather worries and are hoping to see you, 2-5 pm Saturday. Everybody’s welcome! Karen from the P-Patch says, “We’ve worked really hard on making it great this year. We have wonderful plants and fall garden starts. Also, really unique organic produce and herbs for cooks, that can’t be found in the markets.” The hillside garden itself, across from the north end of Lincoln Park, is a sight to see, too.

COUNTDOWN: Fauntleroy Fall Festival this Sunday!

If it’s not already in your weekend plan … we need to talk about the Fauntleroy Fall Festival. Again this year, it’s three busy hours of all-ages fun in the heart of Fauntleroy – in and around the historic Fauntleroy Schoolhouse, in and around the Fauntleroy YMCA (WSB sponsor) and Fauntleroy Church across the street, this Sunday (October 23rd), 2-5 pm. Here’s just part of what you’ll find:

*Pumpkin decorating
*Other crafts
*Birdhouse building
*Climbing wall
*Pony rides
*Music (including West Seattle Big Band in The Hall at Fauntleroy at 3:30 pm)
*Cake contest and cakewalk

About that last one – you can enter! Here’s how:

The decorating contest has three categories: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Cakes can be any shape or size but should have either a Fall, Halloween, or West Seattle theme. They can be very simple to very elaborate, baked and decorated by an individual, or a parent and child, a family, or a group of friends.

Cakes should be brought to the Vashon Room on the day of the festival, between 12 noon and 1 pm. Voting will begin at 1:30 and continue until about 3 p.m. Once the votes have been tallied, prizes will be awarded for each category. (Who votes? You do, along with other Fall Festival guests.) And then the Cake Walk begins! The Cake Walk continues until all the cakes have been given away. If you do not want to enter the Cake Decorating Contest, you can bake and donate a cake for the Cake Walk.

The Vashon Room is at The Hall at Fauntleroy (9131 California SW). Everything’s free except the food items you’ll find available for purchase.

P.S. One great way to get there is RapidRide C Line, which drops you off in the middle of the festival.

More details tonight as we look ahead to Sunday’s Seattle Summer Parkways – the latest incarnation of “car-free day,” though it’s not really “car-free” – on Alki . Official event time is 11 am-4 pm, but things get started earlier with hundreds of Orca Half (Marathon) runners leaving Don Armeni Boat Ramp, heading westbound, at 9:30 am.

First, here are the specific times and locations for parking and other vehicle restrictions on Sunday. As the map shows, the heart of Alki will be entirely closed to motorized-vehicle traffic, while from 56th to Don Armeni, one lane will be closed, one open:

-There will be no waterside parking along Alki Ave SW from 63rd Ave SW to Don Armeni Boat Ramp from 8 am to 5 pm on 09/25

-Parking will be allowed on the residential side of the street from 55th Ave SW to Don Armeni boat ramp

-Local access to vehicles will be maintained from 56th Ave SW to Don Armeni boat ramp via one lane

(ADDED WEDNESDAY) The Metro Route 50 reroute will be:

L 60 Av SW
R SW Hinds
R 63 Av SW
R SW Admiral Wy
S SW Admiral and 61 Av SW (temp terminal)

We’re still awaiting word on the Water Taxi shuttle route(s).

(BACK TO ORIGINAL REPORT) In addition to the long list of “partners” that’ll be providing activities/information/etc., mentioned on the SSP West Seattle page, the time-specific event schedules are now available, too:

The Disaster Relief Bike Trials are still open for participation, and the folks at West Seattle Be Prepared tell us that four local “hubs” will be activated so this really serves as a preparedness exercise as well as a fun activity – read about it on their website here. And if you have any questions/points of confusion about Seattle Summer Parkways, please comment or otherwise let us know, as we’ll be publishing more updates before Sunday and will be happy to ask organizers more questions.

COUNTDOWN: ‘Summer Parkways’ at Alki next Sunday

Six months after we brought you first word that the city would revive the “car-free day” concept this year and move it back to September, we’re one week away from the Alki edition of “Seattle Summer Parkways.” The map above shows the route along which the westbound – water-side – lane will be closed to motorized vehicles all day, between 63rd SW and Don Armeni Boat Ramp, which is where the Orca Half (Marathon) will start around 9:30 am; the day’s other activities are set to officially run from 11 am to 4 pm. A long list of activity presenters is online here, and we’re expecting even more info before next Sunday arrives, so we’ll continue counting down.

West Seattle Harvest Festival 2016 set & welcoming activity presenters, sponsors, chili competitors…

(WSB file photo)

ORIGINAL REPORT, 12:46 PM: The 2016 West Seattle Harvest Festival has just been announced for Sunday, October 30th, 10 am-2 pm in The Junction. If you’re new here – the Harvest Festival is the annual street-fair combination of family activities, business trick-or-treating (that part starts at noon), and WS Farmers’ Market. The West Seattle Junction Association presents it, and director Lora Swift says they’re currently inviting prospective sponsors (WSB is already on board) and activity presenters. Go here ASAP if you’re a business interested in being a sponsor, and/or a business, nonprofit, or school interested in presenting an activity. (And yes, there will be a chili cookoff again this year, with the fee for tasting/judging benefiting the West Seattle Food Bank – more to come on that.)

3:19 PM UPDATE: Here’s the scoop on how to enter the chili competition:

Participants must:

§ Be a West Seattle business.

§ Bring two gallons of hot chili made in commercial kitchen and an electric warmer. Maintain chili’s temperature to meet health standards.

§ Provide a chili server who has a current Food Handlers Card.

§ Be ready to serve at 11 am! With 2 gallons of chili, we’ll be able to serve about 100 flights and the competition will probably be done by 1 pm.

§ Space is limited to 8 competitors, and a minimum of 4 competitors are needed.

We’ll provide everything else. To register – admin@wsjunction.org with your business name, contact person, and agreement that rules will be followed.

The festival also includes a costume parade at 11:30 am, led by the West Seattle High School Marching Band.

VIDEO, PHOTOS: First-ever Festival CentroAmericano at Westcrest Park

(Video and photos by Leda Costa for WSB)

4:25 PM: You still have time to get to the first-ever Festival Centroamericano, scheduled until 7 pm at Westcrest Park in Highland Park! Photojournalist Leda Costa is covering it for WSB, starting with the video above, from Folklore Nicaragua‘s performance, so we’ll have photos later – but for now, go celebrate Central American culture in person, via music, dance, food, and more. The park’s at 9000 8th SW.

ADDED 11:20 PM: As promised, more photos:

While the dancing was popular, the food was an even-bigger draw, with long lines, and some vendors selling out. This is Lucero Teofilo, whose mother Rosia runs Franci’s Fresh Fruit:

Emceeing the event, Edgardo Armando Franco, known as “El General.” Also onstage were singers including Alfredo Chavez, who, before singing, offered a lesson in the art of the Panamanian Saloma, something like yodeling.

Organizers say this is not only our area’s first festival celebrating Central American culture, but the first one in our state, and they hope to do it again next year.

SUNDAY: First-ever Central American festival coming to Westcrest Park

A first-of-its-kind festival is happening in West Seattle this Sunday! Here’s the announcement we received for Festival Centroamericano, coming to Westcrest Park:

The first festival in Seattle that is dedicated to learning and sharing the cultural expressions from Central America, the Festival Centroamericano, will bring together members of the various Seattle Neighborhoods that are from Central America or have family from the seven Central American countries (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama).

Embracing our Central American heritage and culture to a community that is not well exposed to it can also offer a great opportunity to learn something new especially with the different ethnic groups (Indigenous, African, Mestizo, Latino) that are involved in the festival. The organization will unite the different ethnic groups from each of the Central American countries to exchange cultures and learn from one another.

The Festival Centroamericano will be a family-oriented and free-for-the-public event, therefore, everyone is welcome to experience a Central American community at Westcrest Park, 9000 8th Ave SW on August 28 from 11AM to 7PM. The festival will have live performances and vendors providing food, art, information, other great services, and more!

CONTINUING SUNDAY: Arts In Nature Festival 2016 @ Camp Long

IMG_5952

Want to be outdoors – and be cool? The meadow at Camp Long is the perfect place right now. We just arrived at the Arts In Nature Festival, presented by Nature Consortium, which is sponsoring WSB right now to promote the annual festival. It’s on until 9 tonight, and again 11 am-6 pm Sunday – you still have lots of time to get here to see this evening’s headliners in the meadow at 7 pm, Big World Breaks, playing on the Nancy Stage [named for NC founder Nancy Whitlock, who’s here right now, as is former NC leader Merica Whitehall and David Bestock of DNDA, with which NC is merging – photo below].

Big World Breaks is in fact doing a sound check right now, before Etienne Cakpo (video added below) takes the stage around 6 pm.

And this is just the main stage – one of four major spots around the park that you’ll find music, dance/performance, or activities. Most of the latter two are done for the day, but music continues until 9, as does the Beer Garden (top photo), where you can also buy and drink Ethiopian coffee:

Camp Long’s famous cabins have artists in residence throughout the weekend, with “installations that mix sound, auditory arts, music, and visual arts.” (Added) That includes poetry, and you can write your own:

Lots more to explore:

On the south end of the meadow, YAMS (Yesler Art Mobile Studio) is here with all-ages activities.

Festival ticket info is here; the park is at 5200 35th SW, with the main entrance off northbound 35th at Dawson.

P.S. One more addition from Saturday evening – the installation inside the Camp Long Lodge that managed to make its subject (“Dust Motes”) seem magical:

(Los Mixtecos on the Delridge Day cultural stage – schedule here)

11:34 AM: We’re in the park outside Delridge Community Center in the first hour of this year’s Delridge Day festival, presented by VIEWS, happening until 11 am, with music, cultural performances, giveaways, treats, skateboarding demonstrations and contests, more. Local groups and businesses are here, as are Seattle Police, since the annual “Picnic at the Precinct” is melded into this again this year (police horses and K-9s will be presenting demonstrations).

IMG_5149

West Seattle’s own Ellis Brothers (below) are the first musical act – at noon, it’s Widowed Cactus; 1 pm, The Slags; 2 pm, Valerie Cavell.

Get down to Delridge/Genesee and enjoy yourself – the festival runs until 3 pm – more updates to come.

11:50 AM: Be sure to roam around and check out all the giveaways while you’re here. Free water and ice cream (courtesy of the Seattle Police Foundation) in the SPD area on the west side of the festival zone; free backpacks with school supplies inside the community center:

Many of the groups here have tchotchkes – we’ve brought a few leftover WSB-branded ice scrapers from festivals past; you never know when actual wintry weather might return, and it’s a cooling thought here on another summer day going into the 80s. Cool things for sale, too – in the Delridge Day info booth, right next to us, you can buy Delridge Day T-shirts, $10 kids, $20 adults. And don’t miss Davin the emcee at the Cultural Stage!

12:29 PM: So much going on. In the clip above, that’s MC Davin with SPD Officer San Miguel and Pele the K-9 in training.

(The officer informed the emcee, not like Pele the soccer player, but rather, Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire.)

In the shade under a big tree, martial-arts demonstrations with Coach Sonia Sillan and others from Elite Brazilian Jiu-jitsu of Seattle (WSB sponsor), headquartered here in Delridge, just blocks away.

In the field in the center of the festival zone, sack racing for anybody who shows up:

On the music stage, Widowed Cactus is performing:

Chas Redmond from VIEWS, the music coordinator (for this and so many local festivals!), points out that many of the performers are local youth. Meantime, over at the skatepark, mini-contests are getting going. And on the Cultural Stage, the Arabaka Trio is performing:

The wading pool’s open too, if you’re coming with little ones who would like to splash around (stick your toes in too).

1:03 PM: Midway through the festival … if you’re hungry, note that Yummy Box, which bills itself as “Seattle’s #1 Asian fusion food truck,” is here.

IMG_5802

So are a tamale vendor and a shave-ice stand. And as we mentioned, you’ll find free ice-cream treats over in the SPD zone. Meantime, on the music stage, The Slags have just started to play.

And come say hi to all the volunteers and organization/agency reps who are here – cool people we know from so many meetings and events – they do a lot for the community, and that includes the festival-coordinating VIEWS folks – consider buying a T-shirt (info above) and/or poster to support the festival.

1:26 PM: Here’s a walk-around of some of the booths here:

On the Cultural Stage right now – Van Lang Vietnamese Cultural School.

1:56 PM: The Cultural Stage also is featuring announcements from time to time, including information from some of the organizations who are here – right now, the Delridge Grocery Coop is talking about its ongoing effort to get to the point where it can open a grocery store; in the meantime, you can catch up with them every Thursday, 4-7 pm, at their farmstand next to the Delridge P-Patch. The West Seattle Democratic Women had the microphone for a while too, talking about their new focus, climate change. Emcee Davin Stedman asked them for recommendations of where to get accurate information online and they said they’ve been adding links to their website.

2:12 PM: We’re into the last hour – it’s warm but there’s lots of shade, in tents and other trees, if you haven’t been here yet. … We’re hearing that Mayor Ed Murray is expected to stop by around 2:30 pm. He visited the festival last year too.

Last act on the Cultural Stage is Dance Brazil:

dancebrazilgirls

2:39 PM: The mayor is here now and Pete Spalding of VIEWS, and the Delridge Neighborhood District Council – one of the groups the mayor recently decided to cut off from city support – is asking him to rethink the decision, pointing out that this event is coordinated by people from DNDC and community councils, “the lifeblood of the neighborhood.”

nancypetemayor

“We’ll work with you, we’ll work with you,” Murray was heard to tell Spalding.

Murray was subsequently seen at the West Seattle Food Bank booth (an organization Spalding long served as a board member), buying a fundraising raffle ticket, according to WSFB’s Judi Yazzolino, who sent the photo below:

0813161433a

2:46 PM: The mayor just offered a few words onstage, where MC Davin urged him to drop the mic, as he had done with SW Precinct Operations Lt. Ron Smith earlier (Lt. Smith really did literally drop the mic). And now the mayor’s back over at the festival info booth, buying a Delridge Day T-shirt.

3 PM: Festival’s over! Thanks to everyone who came to Delridge Day, and a special shoutout to the nice folks who stopped by our table to say hi.

P.S. West Seattle’s next summer festival is Nature Consortium‘s Arts in Nature Festival next weekend at Camp Long.
