(WSB photo from 2018 Harvest Festival)

Time to start counting down to next weekend’s biggest event, the West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival (Sunday, October 27th, 10 am-2 pm). First preview: A popular feature, the Chili Cookoff, which raises money for the West Seattle Food Bank. Nine local restaurants/caterers donate chili so hundreds of “flights” can be served for $10 donations; tasters get to vote, and at 1:30 pm, the winner will be crowned. From Lora Radford of the West Seattle Junction Association, this year’s list of competitors:

Duos Catering
Easy Street Café
Elliott Bay
Girls Gone BBQ
Husky Deli
Ma’ono
Pecos Pit
Shadowland
The Westy

All but Ma’ono were part of last year’s lineup; the 2018 winner was Duos. Who will win the taste test this year? Look for the chili being served on the southwest corner of California/Alaska during the festival, which also includes a Hot Cocoa/Cider Garden, the costume parade at 11:30 am, trick-or-treating at noon, and the Farmers’ Market ongoing throughout.

(WSB photo, Fauntleroy Fall Festival 2018)

BONUS: Pre-festival – at 1 pm Caspar Babypants performs at the Fauntleroy Schoolhouse, launching its new Kindie Fest concert series – watch his site for ticket info.

Run4Food kicks off West Seattle Beer & Music Festival’s second day

The West Seattle Beer & Music Festival‘s second day is under way – but first, a toast to this year’s beneficiary, the West Seattle Food Bank! Those toasting were participants in this afternoon’s fundraising fun run, the .5K Run4Food. Festival organizer Joe Jeannot led the refreshing celebration at the finish line:

The run was literally around the block where the festival’s happening, at the Alki Masonic Center (40th/Edmunds) in The Junction:

Participants included the WSFB’s tireless executive director Fran Yeatts, who feigned fatigue at the finish line:

Go here to see what’s happening at the festival through 10 pm; it’s followed by the second-night #NotDoneYet afterparty until 1 am. (Dogs are welcome at the WSBMF until 7 tonight.) Ticket info’s here. Community co-sponsors are listed here (including WSB).

The beer is cold and the music’s cool as the first night of the second annual West Seattle Beer & Music Festival continues at Alki Masonic Center (4736 40th SW). We were there as the live music got going with Fly Moon Royalty:

Next up onstage, Marmalade, scheduled for 8:15 pm, followed by DJ Indica Jones. The music’s on the north side of the site, with beer booths on both sides, including local faves like White Center’s Future Primitive Brewing:

Above are Dave, Shelley, and Andrew. (See the music and beer lists here.) The festival (including tomorrow’s 2:45 pm .5K Run4Food) is raising money for the West Seattle Food Bank, and you can stop by their booth on the south side to find out how they help thousands of your neighbors every year:

Above are WSFB executive director Fran Yeatts with volunteer Bobby. Not far away, food trucks with options from tacos to banh mi. The festival segues into the #NotDoneYet afterparty at 10 pm; tomorrow’s the long day, with VIP tickets getting you in at 1:30 pm, music starting with Willow at 2:15 pm, general admission at 3 pm. Tickets/info here!

COUNTDOWN: 3 days until 2019 West Seattle Beer and Music Festival!

Three days to go until the West Seattle Beer and Music Festival this Friday and Saturday at Alki Masonic Center in The Junction, and that video is another invitation for you to be part of the fun. Before summer ends, it’s one last big party, celebrating – what else? – beer and music. WSBMF also celebrates and strengthens the West Seattle Food Bank, which benefits from part of the proceeds, especially a new feature this year, the .5K Run for Food at 2:45 pm Saturday. Here’s the festival lineup – what you’ll drink and who you’ll see/hear 5-10 pm Friday, 3-10 pm Saturday (with 1:30 earlybird entrance if you get a VIP ticket), plus the #NotDoneYet afterparty both nights. Don’t have your ticket(s) yet? Go here!

THINK FALL! West Seattle Harvest Festival returning; here’s how to be part of it

(October 2018 photo by Leda Costa for WSB)

The West Seattle Junction’s fall celebration, the Harvest Festival, will return for its eighth year on Sunday, October 27th, 10 am-2 pm. Even though that’s more than two months away, The Junction is signing up sponsors/activity providers now, if you’d like to be part of the festival. If you’re new, here’s how it works: The West Seattle Farmers’ Market is on California SW between Oregon and Alaska that day as usual, but the block to the south is closed too as well as part of SW Alaska (just like Summer Fest!) for free kids’ activities and other highlights – a costume parade, chili cookoff, and root-beer garden are usually part of the celebration. If you’re interested in sponsorship, go here!

COUNTDOWN: 10 days to 2019 West Seattle Beer & Music Festival

That’s a video invitation to the 2019 West Seattle Beer and Music Festival on August 23-24, now just 10 days away at Alki Masonic Center in The Junction (4736 40th SW). Here’s your reminder of what it’s all about:

Sponsored by Beer Star, West Seattle Beer and Music Festival creates an outdoor, summer party vibe, ideal for fostering connections amongst the community. Patrons can taste beers from over 20 local and national breweries while grooving to a mix of funk and soul musical acts.

It was started by West Seattle beer and food entrepreneur Joe Jeannot, who felt there was a need for this type of event: “I’ve always wanted to throw a beer festival. West Seattle doesn’t have a lot of festivals so I thought this was the perfect neighborhood to launch. I just love bringing people together, I’ve been doing it my whole life.”

New this year is a Run4Food .5k race benefiting West Seattle Food Bank, the festival’s charity partner. The costumed .5k race takes place at 2:45 PM on Saturday, August 24th, just before General Admission gates open at 3 PM. Individuals can purchase tickets for $40, groups of six for $230. $10 of every individual ticket and $50 of every group ticket goes to West Seattle Food Bank. Admission includes entry to the Saturday session of the festival, tasting tokens, and a glass. Awards for top qualifiers and best team costume will be given by race sponsor, Project 968.

As a city, Seattle knows its beer. According to Forbes magazine, Seattle has the 9th-most breweries per capita of all US cities, and the third-most microbreweries overall. The Festival’s carefully-curated selection of beers aims to keep even Seattleites with the most experienced palettes satisfied. The selection will be wide-ranging, with a focus on specialty batches.

“I love specialty beers that start a conversation and make you check the nose, look and taste the beer,” says Jeannot. “I tried to assemble those at the festival.”

The music stage is headlined by New York based teacher-turned-rapper Mega Ran, whom Noisey once called ‘your new favorite rapper’. Last year’s crowd favorite Marmalade headlines the music stage Friday night. For those that don’t want the party to end, there are nightly after parties DJ’d by DJ Indica Jones – beloved amongst Seattle’s hip, underground dance scene. Dogs are also welcome in the Festival on Saturday the 24th from 1-5 PM.

The best ticket deal is two-day VIP, which includes admission to the festival both days with early admission Saturday for an exclusive tasting event, entry to the nightly #NotDoneYetAfterParty, and an exclusive tasting glass with 20 taste tokens to use throughout the weekend. Tickets available online from Stranger Tickets. A portion of each ticket sale goes to West Seattle Food Bank.

See the music and beer lineups here. And if you live nearby – here’s a special notice for you:

Kayaking will again be part of the Duwamish River Festival this year. It’s happening next Saturday (August 17th) at Duwamish Waterway Park on the river in South Park (7900 10th Ave. S.), noon-5 pm. This will be the 13th annual festival, and it’s always educational as well as entertainment, with information about the river’s history and the ongoing cleanups. Live music and cultural presentations are planned too, according to the festival coordinators at the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition – with performers/presenters including Hurati Mana, NW Tap Connection, Amigos de Seattle, Kalpulli Tlaloktekhuhtli, Angeles de MX, Thai Classical Music and Dance, among others. A free boat tour of the river is scheduled post-festival, 6 pm from Harbor Island Marina; preregistration has already maxed out but the boat-tour ticket page says, “A limited number of additional tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis” at the festival – check at the City of Seattle booth.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Delridge Day 2019!

11:38 AM: The rain’s gone, the sun’s trying to emerge, and Delridge Day 2019 is on! Above, Khmer dancers launched the festival’s Cultural Stage performances. The rest of the schedule:

11:45 am – Brazilian Dancers
12:30 pm – John Fanene, Polynesian singer
1:15 pm – Jazz Night School band

The Cultural Stage is on the north side of Delridge Community Center Park (Delridge/Genesee/26th). Next to the center is the music stage, where Yesod is playing now, to be followed by:

Noon – The Slags
1 pm – Mode Music Studios students
2 pm – Joe Brazil Legacy Jazz Band

Also here: Dozens of community organizations and vendors with booths/tables, the Urban Survival Skills Fair, Southwest Precinct police-presented Picnic, a backpack giveaway with Eastridge Church inside the center…

… and more. It’s all on until 3 pm. One change because of the rain: The skateboarding competition at the skatepark will start at 2 pm.

12:06 PM: Brazilian dancers are on the Cultural Stage now:

Elsewhere on the festival grounds, you can learn while having fun – preparedness is anything but dull at the Urban Survival Skills Fair (look for the BIG tent):

The festival isn’t called Delridge Day only on behalf of its location – you can find out about east West Seattle groups and activities too. Next to our booth, Highland Park Improvement Club has everything from T-shirts to info about the many events HPIC presents:

On the other side of us, just south of the Cultural Stage, are the community volunteers who coordinate Delridge Day. Over at the Police Picnic, a fingerprinting demonstration:

More dancing!

12:44 PM: Over on the Music Stage, some rock ‘n’ roll!

1:15 PM: Hungry? Off The Rez food truck is here, parked by the Delridge CC entrance:

Today’s menu includes frybread, tacos, and burgers. The view of the festival grounds from the center of the park:

Jazz Night School students are on the Cultural Stage right now:

Mode Music Studios (WSB sponsor) on the stage by the center building.

Something else that happened: The SPD’s Community Awards were announced. Separate story on that later! And as part of the Sustainable West Seattle GreenLife Expo, “Diver Laura” James is giving festivalgoers a chance to view the Virtual Salish Sea:

2:10 PM: Final hour of Delridge Day – hurry up and get here if you haven’t been already! The skateboarding competition has begun over at the skatepark (delayed a few hours so the morning rainfall’s residue could evaporate). Lessons too, with Skate Like a Girl:

The festival is also a great opportunity to ask questions, get info, even register to vote. Thanks to all the kind folks who have stopped by our booth to say hi. And props to the organizers – here’s four of them:

From left, Larry Winkler, Pete Spalding, Chas Redmond, Michael Taylor-Judd. Not pictured, Ron Angeles, who was here when we stopped by two hours before the start to be sure it wasn’t going to be rained out. (Added: Also, Ann Martin!) Organizing a festival takes months of work leading up to the big day and they’re all volunteers.

3:01 PM: The festival’s officially over but because of the rain-delayed start, skateboarding’s still on. Meantime, a bit more music:

(Find out more about them at joebrazil.org.) And Stu Hennessey from Alki Bike and Board (WSB sponsor) has been giving bike tours:

Sunshine’s hitting full strength – enjoy the rest of your Saturday!

If you have elementary-, middle-, and/or high-school students in your family and they need backpacks for school, you’ll want to visit tomorrow’s Delridge Day festival. While supplies last, at Delridge Community Center (4501 Delridge Way SW), Eastridge Church will be on site giving away 500 backpacks filled with school supplies as part of Delridge Day. The festival’s happening in and around the center 11 am-3 pm tomorrow; see this preview for more about what’s planned.

COUNTDOWN: What you’ll find at Delridge Day 2019 this Saturday

Two days until our area’s next big festival. Delridge Day, with co-sponsors including WSB. Organizers have just sent this update on what you’ll find:

The 2019 Delridge Day festival is this Saturday, August 10th, from 11 AM-3 PM at Delridge Community Center and Park [Delridge/Genesee]. This year’s festival will be our largest yet, with 50+ booths in our community area, and a number of new and returning festival features:

Rain City West Printing is sponsoring “The Eight Circle of Del” regional skateboard competition in the skatepark this year! The competition will be going on all day with registration beginning at 10:00 am, so don’t miss out on the chance to show off your skills and win some cool prizes for competitors of all ages! Registration is FREE and helmets are required.

Don’t know how to skate yet or feel intimidated by the skatepark? Skate Like a Girl will be back this year to offer lessons. Skate Like a Girl is a nonprofit organization empowering individuals, especially young womxn, to become strong, confident leaders who promote and implement equity through the vehicle of skateboarding. They believe that skateboarding is a tool to build confidence, resilience, and foster inclusive community.

Family-friendly martial-arts demonstrations will be on display thanks to local business Combat Arts Academy of Seattle, which offers programs for all ages and skill levels – whether you want to learn self-defense, get into shape, compete, or just have fun… they have a class for you, designed to help you reach your goals.

Once again, FREE picnic food will be provided as part of the annual Southwest Precinct Picnic, with support from returning sponsor the Seattle Police Foundation. Precinct Picnics provide opportunities for each precinct’s surrounding neighborhoods to come together and enjoy an afternoon of celebration with the officers who protect their families and businesses. The Seattle Police Department plans to make many officers and units available. Last year, they brought cars, a K-9 police officer, their Mounted Patrol (that happen to be based right here in our Delridge neighborhood), a Bomb Squad robot that was offering candy, and free ice cream and popcorn.

Our TWO entertainment stages will feature another great lineup of local live music and cultural groups as always, supported by returning sponsor PNTA, your experts in theatre and stage equipment:

· Khmer Dancers
· Brazilian Dancers
· Polynesian singer John Fanene
· Jazz Night School Band
· and much more…

We are excited to announce that this year’s GreenLife Festival, a dedicated summer programming area curated by Sustainable West Seattle. The mission of GreenLife is to facilitate a public space where topics of sustainability can be demonstrated and realized. Come check out their booths and learn about local initiatives to promote sustainability in West Seattle and beyond. Along with information, Alki Bike & Board will be hosting e-bike tours of the Puget Ridge Edible Park project and Diver Laura will have the VR Virtual Salish Sea on site!

And if that isn’t enough, our local Seattle Emergency Hubs group will be hosting the Urban Survival Skills Fair, offering an opportunity to gain a variety of preparedness-related skills and useful knowledge from experts!

The VieWS planning committee would like to give a shout-out to our Feature Sponsors, Rain City West Printing and Port of Seattle. We also want to recognize our Community Sponsors: Alki Bike & Board, Combat Arts Academy of Seattle, Nucor, PNTA, Seattle Parks & Recreation, and Seattle Public Utilities.

We are also supported by a generous grant from 4Culture, which provides funding and support for the cultural work that makes King County vibrant! And we are proud to be recognized as a Seafair community festival.

Without them, our other sponsors, and all of our volunteers, none of this would be possible! The sponsorship and vendor fees not only support the festival but also allow us to give back to the community, as VieWS will continue our tradition of donating a percentage of all fees to the ARC (Associated Recreational Council), which provides money to fund scholarships for Community Center classes at the Delridge Community Center, and to a local organization helping to educate and connect our neighbors.

We’ll be on site covering Delridge Day as it happens. See you there!

After this weekend’s Alki Art Fair, West Seattle’s next summer festival is on August 10th – Delridge Day. It’s happening 11 am-3 pm at the Delridge Community Center park and the adjacent skatepark, and organizers say it’ll be bigger than ever. One new feature: The Sustainable West Seattle GreenLife Expo, formerly part of Summer Fest in The Junction, is moving to Delridge Day this year. The SPD Picnic in the Precinct is part of Delridge Day again this year. So are dozens of vendors and community organizations. Entertainment and kids’ activities too. And a skating competition (here’s the flyer). The park’s at Delridge/Genesee. We’ll be reporting from the festival as it happens – see you there on Saturday, August 10!

AT THE BEACH: Alki Art Fair 2019, day 1

In perfect counterpoint to the gray-ish sky, brightness is everywhere at the Alki Art Fair – from boardwalk chalk art (above) to ~120 artist/vendor booths:

You can listen to live music (here’s the schedule):

(Angela Soffe Band)

Or if you’re of a certain age, you can play in the kid zone set up by soon-to-open Alki playspace Outer Space Seattle:

Go into the Bathhouse to bid on silent-auctions donated to raise money to help keep the festival free for attendees:

Booths are open until 6 tonight (and again 10-6 Sunday) with music continuing until 9 on the main stage (when you visit, also check out the busker stage at the west end of the boardwalk, which we’re sponsoring again this year). Even if you’re not biking, walking, or busing to the beach, you can still go without worrying about parking – a free shuttle is running between Alki and the Admiral District (California/Admiral by the Chevron station) and the park-and-ride under the bridge.
