ORCA HALF MARATHON: Today marks the Orca Half‘s second year in West Seattle. The course is being run differently this year – runners will gather at Don Armeni Boat Ramp starting at 6:30 am to be shuttled to Lincoln Park, from which they will start – near Colman Pool – in waves between 8 am and 9 am, running a course inside the park before heading north and east toward the finish line at Don Armeni – here’s the map. They’ll be running on trails, sidewalks, and in the parking lane. Beneficiary is The Whale Trail. Dahlia Elsayed’s first show with Virago Gallery features works on paper on the theme of language, landscape, poetry and shifting perspectives. The 16 works in the show include paintings and a series of 12 painted paper collages with handwritten text as part of the image. Dahlia Elsayed combines text and imagery to create visually narrative paintings that document internal and external geographies. She begins with verse as a starting point of each work and uses the edited texts in created landscapes, mixing the psychological with the topographical.

HEARING ON DESIGN-REVIEW CHANGES: As previewed here last night, the City Council’s Planning, Land Use, and Zoning Committee has a public hearing tonight on major changes proposed to the Design Review program, which among other things is the only part of the development-vetting process that often includes public meetings. This topic is the second part of a meeting at SIFF Cinema Uptown in lower Queen Anne; the first, focused on upzoning for that area, is scheduled 5:30-7 pm, with the Design Review-related hearing to follow around 7 pm. HURRICANE FUNDRAISER: The photo above is from Amy, who explains, “My kids are raising money for hurricane victims. They made a lot of money (Saturday), in a short amount of time. And will be back (today) selling cookies, brownies, muffins, and lemonade.” ~10 am-2 pm. The proceeds go to hurricane relief via GlobalGiving.org. (52nd SW/SW Stevens)

PARK FEEDBACK @ FARMERS’ MARKET: Two-thirds of an acre of land in the 4700 block of 40th SW, bought by the city five years ago, is getting closer to being turned into a park. Potential designs are being shown, and your feedback collected, 10 am-2 pm today at the Farmers Market – look for the Seattle Parks booth/table.
