We start again today with some reminders meant to be helpful as temperatures rise. One reader asked us today about an updated list of all types of local, open-to-public businesses with air conditioning – we haven’t had the bandwidth to update that list in a while but if you have suggestions (especially, our reader suggested, for happy hour!), please comment, and we’ll add them below. Meantime, the city’s suggestions:

Seafair weekend means a quieter calendar here in the neighborhood, but we do have a few notes for you:

[This is NEXT Saturday!] RIVERSIDE WALKING TOUR: 10 am-noon, Riverside native Frank Zuvela leads the Southwest Seattle Historical Society’s annual walking tour of this historic neighborhood near the Duwamish River. Admission by donation; $5 suggested. (Meet at Riverside Memorial, West Marginal Way SW/SW Marginal Place)

BARBECUE BENEFIT: 11 am-3:45 pm, West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) is grilling hot dogs and hamburgers to raise money to help pets in shelters. Look for the tent outside the entrance. (California/Fauntleroy)

SEAFAIR – SHIP TOURS & BLUE ANGELS AGAIN TODAY: See last night’s story for times and viewing suggestions, if you’re not going to the official viewing zone on Lake Washington. And remember the I-90 bridge will close again, 1:15-2:40 pm, during the Blue Angels’ performance.

LOG HOUSE MUSEUM: More West Seattle history! Noon-4 pm are today’s regular hours at the Alki museum where the SWSHS is headquartered. (61st SW/SW Stevens)

NO ALKI LIGHTHOUSE TOURS THIS WEEKEND: Seafair weekend means U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers are busy elsewhere, so the lighthouse is closed to the public this weekend.

COMEDY FUNDRAISER: Comedy Court presents the Carb-Free Cabaret at South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) Brockey Center, 7 pm, raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Details here. (6000 16th SW)

‘SKYFALL’ @ WEST SEATTLE OUTDOOR MOVIES: This week’s movie is at dusk (9ish) in the courtyard at Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor), but you’ll want to be there much earlier, not just to snag a seat (bring your own chair/blanket), but also for James Bond trivia – WSB co-publisher Patrick has put together the questions, and there are prizes, donated by Hotwire, Pecos Pit BBQ (WSB sponsor), and Full Tilt Ice Cream. No dogs, please, for their comfort and moviegoers – the courtyard has been so packed this season (new location starts in 2 weeks!) that there is just no place to roam. (4410 California SW)

West Seattle Friday: Blue Angels, Mount music, HPIC Corner Bar, more

Thanks to Raul Baron for last night’s sunset/moonset view – call it the early start to an honorary three-day Seafair-and-more weekend. Speaking of which, ship tours continue today, just across the bay:

Here’s the list of ships, locations, and times for tours (which continue through Sunday, with some daily changes). And the Blue Angels are up for another practice airshow just after 1 pm. Other planes, too:

They take off from Boeing Field, just east of West Seattle, which has multiple places to watch, including the Museum of Flight:

The pre-Angels airshow starts at 11:45; lineup information is here. And we’ve been mentioning in traffic coverage, the Blue Angels’ performance – technically a “practice” today – closes the I-90 bridge 1:15-2:40 pm, and there’s invariably residual backup onto northbound I-5, among other routes, so if you have to get around during that window, be forewarned.

Here’s what’s happening on the ground, on-peninsula, for the rest of today/tonight:

ANANSI THE SPIDER: 11 am at West Seattle (Admiral) Library, the classic tale of the trickster spider, told by Oregon Shadow Theatre. (2306 42nd SW)

Osprey0716-55
(“Osprey or Blue Angel?” is how photographer Mark Wangerin captioned this)

Good morning! Highlights for today/tonight:

WINGSTOP OPENS AT WESTWOOD VILLAGE: As first reported here Tuesday, this is the “soft-open” day for the Wingstop restaurant that’s been in the works at Westwood Village for more than a year. The company told us noon-ish, but we’ve also heard it could be earlier – regular hours will start daily at 11. (2800 SW Barton)

BLUE ANGELS PRACTICES AND I-90 CLOSURES: Today is the first of four days that the Blue Angels will be in the air for Seafair, and the I-90 bridge will be closed across Lake Washington, which usually means backups on northbound I-5. Today’s closure times are 9:45 am-noon and 1:15-2:40 pm. You can watch the jets take off and land from Boeing Field; they are based just south of the Museum of Flight during their stay here.

SEAFAIR SHIP TOURS: Not in West Seattle but not far! Tours of the Seafair fleet (which sailed past WS on Tuesday) continue today. Including the USS Somerset, which has a story behind what’s visible on its hangar door:

Parade of ships 2016-3
(Photo by Monica Zaborac, taken during Tuesday’s Parade of Ships)

The Somerset, an amphibious transport dock that’s been in service for two years, is named for Somerset County, Pennsylvania, where Flight 93 crashed on 9/11, after its passengers decided to stop the hijackers from getting to their destination – “Let’s roll” is what passenger Todd Beamer said as they began. You can tour the Somerset at Pier 90 (Magnolia), the USS Gridley and USCGC Active at Pier 66, and HMSC Saskatoon from Canada at Pier 69 – see times and other info here.

GOODMED ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE: 6-8 pm, GoodMed Direct Primary Care (WSB sponsor) in Morgan Junction invites you to stop by and celebrate the clinic’s first anniversary! “This is a great opportunity to socialize with neighbors, meet current members, get to know the doctors, and learn about the medical revolution called Direct Primary Care.” (6553 California SW)

VICCI MARTINEZ AT HIAWATHA: 6:30 pm on the east lawn at Hiawatha Community Center, you can see singer Vicci Martinez for free, thanks to the Admiral Neighborhood Association-presented Summer Concerts at Hiawatha (with co-sponsors including WSB). Bring your own blanket/chair and get ready for a great time. (Walnut/Lander)

DESIGN REVIEW x 2: Two projects on the Southwest Design Review Board‘s schedule tonight – 6:30 pm, 5458 California SW (six live-work units – design “packet” and more here); 8 pm, 4754 Fauntleroy Way SW (7-story mixed-use building including 108 apartments and 10 live-work units, design “packet” and more here). Both include public-comment periods; both are at the Sisson Building/Senior Center in The Junction. (California SW/SW Oregon)

Today’s photo is from Don Brubeck, who observed, “There are worse places to be stuck waiting for traffic to clear – at the Spokane Street Bridge with a bunch of bike riders waiting for a couple of Westrac tugs to bring out the Skagway Provider on the high tide, for their commute to Southeast Alaska.” Here’s where this day/night might take you:

ELECTION DAY: If you don’t get your ballot into the mail by tonight, it’s just wasted paper, so take a few minutes and vote. You can send it by postal mail if you’re sure it’ll have today’s postmark, or you get it to West Seattle’s new dropbox at High Point Library (Raymond east of 35th SW) by 8 pm.

LOW-LOW TIDE: One more day with a -1.9 low-low tide (at 11:08 am), and that brings Seattle Aquarium beach naturalists back to Constellation and Lincoln Parks, 10 am-1 pm.

SEAFAIR PARADE OF SHIPS: Before the Seafair fleet – two U.S. Navy ships, one Canadian Navy ship, and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter – parades past the downtown waterfront at 1 pm, it passes West Seattle, and it’s always a sight. Watch from north-facing shores after noon. Tomorrow through Sunday, the ships are open for tours on the downtown/Magnolia waterfront – details on the Seafair website.

LEARN TO TAKE A COMPUTER APART AND REASSEMBLE IT: 3-5 pm at Delridge Library, free workshop for kids/teens in grades 6-12. Registration required; our calendar listing explains how.

JUSTIN KAUSAL-HAYES: 5-8 pm, live music at Salty’s on Alki (WSB sponsor) – starting with the final hour of Salty’s 3-6 pm happy hour. (1936 Harbor SW)

NIGHT OUT: 6-9 pm, tonight is the annual night for neighbors to get out and get to know each other better, in the interest of everything from crime prevention to preparedness. Many block parties mean non-arterial street closures, so if you’re driving or riding this evening rather than partying with neighbors, please be extra, extra careful. We’ll be covering Night Out “live” as usual – we’ll be stopping at some parties and would also be thrilled to get a photo from yours – e-mail editor@westseattleblog.com, text 206-293-6302, or tag WSB – @westseattleblog – in your photo posted to Twitter or Instagram. Thank you!

‘BEERS FOR BIRDS’ TRIVIA NIGHT: 7-9 pm at Treehouse Lounge, trivia and fundraising for Seattle Audubon! 21+. More info in our calendar listing. (2206 California SW)

JIM PAGE: Singer-songwriter works his magic at C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor), 7-9 pm. (5612 California SW)
