THOSE NEIGHBORHOOD VOLUNTEERS THE MAYOR WANTS TO CUT OFF … are meeting tonight at Highland Park Improvement Club. As we’ve reported here and here, what was to be the monthly meeting of the Delridge Neighborhoods District Council has expanded to a gathering of neighborhood-district-council participants, supporters, and anyone else interested, from all over the city, not to decry Mayor Murray‘s plan to cut off city support, they say, but to talk about what they’ve accomplished and could accomplish with more support instead of less. All welcome. 7 pm. (12th SW/SW Holden)

From the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar:

BALLOTS START ARRIVING: Watch your postal mail – ballots for the August 2nd “primary” election should start arriving today. And remember that West Seattle now has a permanent ballot dropbox, on SW Raymond east of 35th SW alongside the High Point Library.

Low Tide on 4 July 2016 along Alki in West Seattle 010 Large e-mail view

West Seattle pilot/photographer Long Bach Nguyen stopped by our table in the Info Tent at Summer Fest over the weekend and mentioned that view, subsequently sending the photo so we could share it with you. It’s from the 4th of July, during the lowest tide of the month (-2.9 feet); the full moon next Tuesday (July 19) will bring a few more days of low tides, but not THAT low.

Now, on with what’s up for the rest of today/tonight:

BABY STORY TIME: 11:30 am-noon at High Point Library – bring your 4-month- to 12-month-old baby for stories, songs, and rhymes. (35th SW/SW Raymond)

MAYOR TO ANNOUNCE NEW COMMUNITY-INVOLVEMENT PLAN: As first noted here on Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Ed Murray plans an announcement at City Hall this afternoon that will mean major changes for some aspects of how community members interact with the city. It’s scheduled for 2:30 pm, and we plan to cover it live. (11:07 am updateSeattle Channel has it listed for a live online stream, too.)

HIGH POINT MARKET GARDEN FARM STAND: Week 3 for your chance to buy fresh produce, steps from where it was grown and harvested by local residents. 4-7 pm. (32nd SW/SW Juneau)

COED ULTIMATE FRISBEE: 6 pm game for all interested, Fairmount Park Playfield. (Fauntleroy Way SW/SW Brandon)

MAYOR AT 34TH DISTRICT DEMOCRATS: Got a question for Mayor Murray – about what he’s announcing today (see above) or something else? He’s scheduled for a speech and Q&A at tonight’s 34th District Democrats meeting at The Hall at Fauntleroy. Meeting starts at 7; most-recent update says the mayor’s part of the agenda is expected around 8. (9131 California SW)

JUBILEE DAYS FIREWORKS: We mentioned it separately earlier just so you know. At dusk, the first night of White Center Jubilee Days will be celebrated with a big fireworks display from Steve Cox Memorial Park, usually audible in south West Seattle. (1321 SW 102th)

NIGHTLIFE: Five opportunities tonight – see our complete calendar for the listings!

Mystery booms: Fireworks? Gunshots? Or?

We’ve received several reports/questions about overnight explosion-type noise west of The Junction that seems to be a mystery in need of solving – maybe you can help. One report today is from Lisa, who says it’s been going on for a few weeks, in the very early morning hours, and seems too loud to be any kind of fireworks. Other reports are from north of The Junction, including “huge booms” heard around 2:30 am near California/Andover. Lisa, meantime, summarizes: “I would like to figure out how to get this out and report it effectively to make it stop; if illegal, to have more done.” We know from scanner traffic that 911 did get some calls, but nothing conclusive appears to have resulted, so far.

West Seattle Monday: Half-dozen happenings

20160708_201705
(Weekend dancing on Alki Beach at sunset – thanks to Bill for the photo)

With the 4th of July and three-day West Seattle Summer Fest all in the span of the past week (among other things!) … it’s time to take a few deep breaths and catch up. Or is it? Here are highlights of what’s happening today/tonight, from the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar – including three events at one venue:

EID MUBARAK! As part of the Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association‘s “Cultural Events Series,” you’re invited to “Eid Mubarak: An Eid al-Fitr Celebration,” marking the recent end of Ramadan, 4-8 pm at Delridge Community Center. Details in our calendar listing. (4523 Delridge Way SW)

HANDS-ON CANDY WORKSHOPS: Free fun for kids in grades K-5, 6:30 pm at High Point Library, demonstrating “basic chemistry, physics, and nutrition concepts using bubbling Warheads, giant gummy worms, bobbing conversation hearts, and sinking marshmallows.” (35th SW/SW Raymond)

NORTH DELRIDGE NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL: This month’s meeting is a 6:30 pm barbecue in the Delridge Community Center park:

We’ll have omnivore, vegetarian, kosher, and halal fare! Bring a side or dessert to share, or BYOBBQ, and we will grill it for you. (Supplies while they last.) Eat and meet (or not!) supporters talking about the 2016 Seattle Housing Levy, which will be on the August primary ballot. What does it mean, and how will it affect people?

Ballots go out this Wednesday, so it’s prime time to learn more about what you’ll be voting on. If you live and/or work and/or play in North Delridge, go meet your neighbors!

Then after the meeting, stay for…

MUSIC UNDER THE STARS, #2: 7:15 tonight in the park north of Delridge Community Center, it’s the second of four free mini-concerts brought to you by the Seattle Chamber Music Society, and then stay for the live stream of the group’s big concert at Benaroya Hall. Yes, rain’s possible on this VERY busy West Seattle Thursday, but you’re local – you know not to let that get in the way of a good time.

SUMMER FEST EVE: The streets in The Junction close at 6 pm for West Seattle Summer Fest setup, rain or shine, and that means the Summer Fest Eve fun begins. It’s also West Seattle Art Walk night, usually on the second Thursday, but on the first one this month to coincide with Summer Fest Eve. Entertainment is planned at West 5 – the big band and jazz quartet from Jazz Night School – and at Elliott Bay Brewing (planning a band and kids’ entertainment, plus a benefit beer release). We’re checking on “what if it really does rain?” backup plans and will update, so check back here later. (UPDATE – The venues have tents on standby!)

Now, here’s the map/venue list for tonight’s Art Walk, 6-9 pm:
