The West Seattle Water Taxi is celebrating its spring/summer schedule, and that kicks off our Sunday list of what’s up:

WATER TAXI CELEBRATION: 8:30 am-8 pm, free rides on the West Seattle Water Taxi all day, with refreshments at Seacrest Pier 10:30 am-noon, which is also when you’ll find King County Council chair Joe McDermott and KCDOT Marine Division head Paul Brodeur to greet passengers and talk about the service. Good morning! Since it’s the start of spring break for Seattle Public Schools, with many families out of town, the calendar for this weekend is a little quieter than usual. Still some fun things to check out:

West Seattle players will be at Morgan Junction Thriftway from 1-5 selling Mariners tickets to the June 28th game against the Pirates. This is a team fundraiser as well as gives them a chance to play at Safeco Field next spring in the High School Baseball Classic. Donations are welcome and all tickets purchased and donated back to the team will be given to the local community centers. Come out and help support the team.

CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE TALKS TREE-CUTTING: As first reported here Tuesday, the City Council’s Parks, Seattle Center, Libraries, & Waterfront Committee will talk this morning about the West Seattle illegal tree-cutting case during a discussion of “tree stewardship.” The meeting is at City Hall at 9:30 am and includes a public-comment period; it’ll be live on the Seattle Channel, cable 21 and seattlechannel.org. OUR OCEAN & YOU: From Stacia Bell at Madison Middle School‘s library:

In preparation for Earth Day on April 22nd, underwater photographer and environmental speaker Annie Crawley will be visiting Madison Middle School on Thursday, April 7th to share some amazing underwater images with students and talk with them about the environmental challenges our planet faces from the impact of climate change and marine debris.

Through her stories and photographs, she hopes to teach students about the interdependence we have with the ocean and empower them to take action in protecting it. Grade-level assemblies will occur during 1st, 2nd and 4th period in the cafeteria and parents/guardians are welcome to join us. Contact Ms. Bell in the library if you have any questions.

Sparky and Rhonda Rucker perform throughout the U.S. and overseas, singing songs and telling stories from the American folk tradition. Sparky has been performing for over forty years and is internationally recognized as a leading folklorist, musician, historian, storyteller, and author. He accompanies himself with fingerstyle picking and bottleneck blues guitar, banjo, and spoons. Rhonda Rucker is a musician, children’s author, storyteller, and songwriter. Her blues harmonica, piano, old-time banjo, and bones add musical versatility to their performances.

Sparky and Rhonda deliver an uplifting presentation of toe-tapping music spiced with humor, history, and tall tales. They’ll take us on an educational and emotional journey that ranges from poignant stories of slavery and war to an amusing rendition of a Brer Rabbit tale and witty commentaries on current events. Their music includes a variety of old-time blues, slave songs, Appalachian music, spirituals, ballads, work songs, Civil War music, railroad songs, and a few of their own original compositions.

Front reserved table seats are $14. Row seating is $12 general and $10 seniors. With a reservation, row seating is only $10 general and $8 seniors. Elementary, middle, & high school students are $5, and pre-school children are free.

*The side note from photographer David, mentioned above: “I know that Canada geese aren’t the most popular bird on the planet, but this little guy is kind of cute. This is another good reason for compliance with the dogs on a leash rule. These geese are generally terrified of dogs (especially large or active ones), even if the dogs are leashed but the owners approach too close. Over the years I have noticed that when the geese make a break to escape to the water by scrambling over the large rocks lining the shore, the small goslings can’t keep up and frequently fall in the large gaps in the rocks and are then trapped – or injure their legs trying to jump across. My wife and I have taken quite a number of the injured ones to PAWS where they usually end up having to be euthanized.”

Big Saturday around West Seattle and beyond. For today/tonight, we’re breaking the list into three parts – first, local Democrats’ caucuses, the first step toward choosing delegates for the presidential nominating convention:

DEMOCRATIC CAUCUSES: They start at 10 am – more than a dozen locations around West Seattle alone. Get there early. Your location is determined by which precinct you live in; if you don’t already know where you’re going, here’s all the info, as published here Friday. The caucuses are the first step toward delegate selection for our state’s representation at the nominating convention; there’s a presidential primary vote later this spring but that will not figure into the Democrats’ process.

Now, egg hunts and more as we start Easter weekend:

THRIFTWAY EGG HUNT: The famous egg hunt at West Seattle Thriftway, for ages 1-10, promising 30,000 eggs filled with fun. 9 am; get there early. (California/Fauntleroy)

COMMUNITY CENTER EGG HUNTS: 10 am is the start time – be there by 9:45 – for the city’s community-center egg hunts, at Alki Community Center, Delridge Community Center, Hiawatha Community Center, High Point Community Center, Southwest Teen Life Center/Southwest Pool.
