HELP THE HELPLINE – CONCERT SERIES STARTS TONIGHT AT ALKI UCC: At 7 pm, Alki UCC Church is hosting its first formal concert since acquiring a 7-foot handmade German concert grand piano two years ago, and its the start of a concert series meant “to bring concert-hall-quality music to West Seattle, and support a local organization in the process. Our outreach team chose West Seattle Helpline because their focus is on how to keep people from becoming homeless.” Here are tonight’s musicians, Spencer Hoveskeland, Lia Wax, and DJ Wilson, rehearsing earlier this week (clip provided by organizers – thanks!):

SELLING EX-SUBSTATIONS? This morning at 9:30 am, the City Council Energy Committee has its first discussion of Seattle City Light‘s proposal to sell off surplus ex-substations in West Seattle, two years after announcing it would be determining the sites’ fate. Full details in our story from Sunday; the meeting’s agenda shows this item should start around 10 am. If you aren’t going to City Hall, you can watch the meeting live on Seattle Channel (online or cable channel 21).

RUNOFF-REDUCING RAINGARDENS TO BE DEDICATED: 1 pm at 32nd SW & SW Kenyon, the King County Wastewater Treatment Division celebrates the completion of one of its two major Combined Sewer Overflow projects in West Seattle, the one for what’s known as the Barton Basin, because it feeds down to the Barton Pump Station near the Fauntleroy ferry terminal. This project resulted in 15 blocks of roadside raingardens built to catch and absorb or reroute rainwater that used to go into the “combined sewer” system, resulting in several overflows of untreated wastewater into Puget Sound most years. After the 1 pm ceremony, you’ll be able to tour three areas of the project, each with a different “palette” of plantings, 1:30-4 pm.

6058 35TH SW @ DESIGN REVIEW BOARD: The mixed-use building proposed for 35th SW & SW Graham in High Point goes back before the Southwest Design Review Board tonight at 6:30 at the Sisson Building (home of the Senior Center). The project, now dubbed “Upton Flats,” is currently described as a “4-story structure containing 89 residential units, 8,500 sq. ft. of office space and 1,500 sq. ft. of retail space located at ground level (with) surface parking for 98 vehicles.” This is a second round of Early Design Guidance; see the city report on the first one, in June, here; see the new design “packet” here; meeting will include a public-comment period. The day’s off to a murky start but the forecast says it’s expected to clear off and become partly sunny. The big event:

WEST SEATTLE CAR SHOW: New location, with more to see and do!

10 am-3 pm on the north side of the South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) campus, where you’ll find not only the cars and motorcycles who show up to show off, but also SSC’s Automotive Technology and Northwest Wine Academy programs, both open to visitors as will be the Seattle Chinese Garden immediately to the north (kids’ activities are planned there too).
