‘IMPACT FEES 101’: Lots of new housing, without lots of new infrastructure to support it. Are “impact fees” the answer? A noontime discussion is planned at City Hall today, as previewed here, and it includes time for public comment. If you can’t be there, watch live on Seattle Channel, online or cable.

The WS Booster Club would like to thank you for your support during our first year as a member-based organization. With your membership, company matching donations, fan wear sales, concession sales, and our Spirts for Sports fundraiser, we were able to help the Girls’ Soccer Team, Tennis Team, Girls’ Softball, Boys’ Basketball, Girls’ Basketball, the Athletic Director with the school weight room, and we were able to help facilitate a direct donation to the Boys’ Soccer Team for all new uniforms.
For this coming year the “Wish List” from coaches already includes equipment and balls for the football team, basketballs for both the boys and girls teams, track team warm-ups and bags, warm-ups and balls for the volleyball team, team polo shirts for the golf team, scoreboard and warm-ups for the girls’ basketball team, and more requests coming in!
Your support is vital to the success of the Booster Club and ultimately as to how much we can help West Seattle High School. Our goal is to assist all of athletic programs at the high school with uniforms, equipment, and needs the school budget cannot cover. The Pay to Play fee only covers a portion of transportation, so there is a huge need for our continued support. LAND SWAP NEAR PUGET PARK? Last month, the city announced a public meeting related to a proposed “land swap” involving parcels of Seattle Parks land near Puget Park, ultimately so that a nearby piece of private land would no longer have to have a driveway through public land. We researched the proposal beyond what was in the announcement and published this report. Tonight’s the meeting, 6:30 pm at Delridge Community Center, for anyone and everyone interested. ADMIRAL NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION: 7 pm meeting, The Sanctuary at Admiral. Agenda:
Seattle Department of Transportation will be on hand to present and answer questions about the final design of the pedestrian-safety improvements and new traffic signal for the intersection of 47th Avenue SW and SW Admiral Way.
Construction is expected to begin before the end of this year and last about 12 weeks. During construction, there will be pedestrian and bicycle detours, and for motor vehicles, lane reductions or partial closures on 47th SW, SW Admiral, and SW Waite. We will also debrief our successful summer-concert series.

The Seattle Public Library offers a lot of help and resources that students and their families might not be fully aware of – so three area branches have special events coming up to fix that! From Nathalie at SPL:
The West Seattle branch libraries will be hosting “School Your Parents” nights, where families can learn about library resources that help children succeed in school. This includes in-person and online homework help, an introduction to our online research resources and a meet and greet with their neighborhood library staff. My motorcycle was stolen out of apartment parking garage on upper Avalon Way between midnight and 8am on 9/3/14. 1999 Red Honda CBR 600 F4. Plate #690065. Police called and report filed. Keep your eyes open!
FOUND BICYCLE #1: Christine and Jeff both sent photos and word of this bicycle that’s been up against a signpost in Morgan Junction for a few days:
Christine described it as “a pink and purple Magna Misty bike with a few iridescent streamers on the handlebars.”
FOUND BICYCLE #2: Dana found this one, described as a purple girl’s Specialized Hotrock:
We’ve advised the bicycles’ finders to report them to police, but do comment if you know whose they are.
CAR PROWL: From Sarah:
My car was broken into again some time between 11:30 pm 9/2 and when I went out again this afternoon 12:30 pm 9/3. Police report has been filed, but I want to warn neighbors. My car was locked up tight abd all doors were unlocked, including the hatch, which requires a key, so I think they may have one of the Subaru dummy keys. It was an older Subaru Legacy Wagon (1992) and the only thing I noticed missing besides the cell phone charger was some loose change. This happened on the 7700 block of 31st Ave SW.

Since many people are off work today, we’re not publishing the usual daily traffic/transit roundup. You can see area traffic cams and get info (including a link to the city map with travel times) on the WSB West Seattle Traffic page.

LAST DAY FOR WADING POOL/SPRAYPARK: It’s the final day of the season for the last wading pool in operation, Lincoln Park, and for Highland Park Spraypark. Both are scheduled to be open 11 am-8 pm today. (If you go to the spraypark, you can explore astronomy too!) **9:46 am update: It’s not wading-pool weather, so the pools won’t open, and are done for the season, the city says, but adds that the sprayparks WILL open today.**
THIRD-TO-LAST DAY FOR COLMAN POOL: West Seattle’s outdoor pool, on the shore in Lincoln Park, ends its daily operations after today, with just one encore, the post-season September 6-7 weekend. So if you’ve been meaning to get to Colman, here’s the schedule.
LIBRARIES: It’s a systemwide closure day for the Seattle Public Library.
‘PARKING HOLIDAY’: Though West Seattle has no pay stations/meters on city streets, in the neighborhoods that do, this is a “parking holiday” – no charge.

Another broken business window on California SW. Unlike the one at the Discovery Shop earlier this week, the circumstances here aren’t clear, but we’re sharing it as an FYI. It happened at White Crane Wellness (3435 California SW) sometime Saturday, according to massage therapist MJ, who reports “stopp(ing) by to pick up something from work at 5:45 pm (Saturday) and saw that our window had been broken. It is double paned. Luckily only the outer pane was broken but there was still broken glass at the scene. Management has been contacted. Don’t know if it is related to the Discovery Store vandalism or a separate incidence.”

ROV’S AT SEACREST: “Diver Laura” James invites you to stop by Seacrest “late morning” today (not time-specific but if you see this shortly after we publish it, head on over!) as she and others “will be ‘flying’ some small Underwater Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV) OpenROV and Open Explorer … shooting some UW video of the OpenROV’s while we test the efficacy of surveying sea-star wasting disease and recruitment with OpenROV’s. You can get an up close and personal look at the ROV’s, ask questions, maybe even drive one! And just for giggles I may even have my iPhone microscope on hand so we can look at a few drops of seawater and try to identify some plankton. A maker-space extravaganza!!! Last full week of summer vacation for most local schools tends to be a quiet week all around. But a few things are on the schedule, including:
CITY AQUATICS: This is the last full week of 2014 operations for Colman Pool, Lincoln Park wading pool, and Highland Park Spraypark, all of which close after Labor Day (Sept. 1st); also, today’s the last day for Southwest Pool until its weeklong closure. YOUNGSTOWN MURAL – THE MOVIE! Today, we start the daily preview with three traffic alerts/reminders:
VIADUCT CLOSED AGAIN TODAY: The Alaskan Way Viaduct and Highway 99 south to the West Seattle Bridge are closed again today, scheduled to reopen early Monday. From the Battery Street Tunnel north to Valley Street, 99 is scheduled to remain closed until early Wednesday. Above is the “live” camera from a stretch of 99 where concrete-repair work is continuing; WSDOT posted an update Saturday on how things are going so far (it also includes maps and specific traffic reminders).
FERRY NOTE: Washington State Ferries is expecting extra traffic on the Fauntleroy-Vashon run today, particularly motorcycles, because of events on the island.
ROAD CLOSURE FOR ALKI BEACH 5K: Alki Avenue SW will be closed along the usual 5K route until about 11 am today, with more than 1,000 runners and walkers expected to participate in the Alki Beach 5K, benefiting Northwest Hope and Healing, which helps breast-cancer patients.
Warrior Marathon Runner Carol Dellinger will be there for inspiration. Last-minute signups are open now by the Alki Bathhouse. Race starts around 9 am.
