9:33 AM: Thanks to commenter Young for mentioning having received a postcard about this – otherwise, it was unannounced, so we didn’t know until now: There are design open houses today for the upcoming projects at Fire Station 32 (rebuild) at 38th/Alaska in The Junction and Fire Station 29 (upgrade) at 2139 Ferry SW in North Admiral. The Station 32 open house is 10 am-noon, Station 29 is 1-3 pm. Assuming these are the same format as open houses at other stations, you’ll be able to stop by, take a look at design renderings, and ask questions.

11:24 AM: Added above, one of the renderings from the Fire Station 32 open house. We stopped by for photos and info and will have a followup later. The same team will be presiding at the Station 29 open house at 1, so if you have questions about 32 but didn’t get there in time, you can ask them there.

HIGHWAY 99, 1ST AVENUE SOUTH: In the stadium zone, some lane/ramp closures you might want to know about this weekend. From WSDOT:

*The South Royal Brougham Way on-ramp to northbound SR 99 will be closed from 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, to 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24.
*The right lane of northbound SR 99 will be closed at South Royal Brougham Way from 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, to 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24.
*The right lane of southbound First Avenue South will be closed from Railroad Way South to just north of South Royal Brougham Way from 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, to 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24.

This is all part of work to reconfigure Highway 99 lanes that are south of the elevated viaduct.

SOUTHBOUND I-5 LANE CLOSURES: This weekend, the expansion-joint work on I-5 south of the heart of downtown is happening on the southbound “collector-distributor lanes.” They’re down to one lane, so steer clear.

MORGAN JUNCTION MURDER TRIAL: As we finish writing this highlight list, we are back at the King County Courthouse for the second day of presentations to the jury in the trial of Lovett Chambers for the 2012 shooting death of Travis Hood – here’s our detailed report, published late last night, about the first day, which included both sides’ opening statements. Proceedings were scheduled to start at 9, but a witness is running late.

DESIGN REVIEW FOR 2626 ALKI AVE. SW: First time in a while that the Southwest Design Review Board has had only one project on its schedule, and it’s also the first mixed-use Alki project in a long time: 2626 Alki SW, which would replace three commercial buildings at Alki and 59th. It’s proposed for 14 residential units, 5 live-work, 3,250 sf of retail, and 28 parking spaces; the first public presentation about the plan was at last June’s Alki Community Council meeting. The Design Review packet has yet to be linked from the page where it’s supposed to be publicly available with at least a week to go; one did turn up elsewhere on the DPD site (not directly linkable) in December, but we’re checking to see if that’s still the newest one. Six months ago, the Westwood-Roxhill-Arbor Heights Community Council together with the Highland Park Action Committee and the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council called on the Seattle Department of Transportation and their King County DOT counterparts to perform a safety study on SW Roxbury Street. Everyone in our area knows how bad the speeding issues are. There are sections of sidewalk missing. We have a large number of accidents.

We asked on July 21, 2013, six months ago. Now, all the safety studies and research are done. SDOT is now in charge of the project, and are going to perform outreach for your feedback in implementing the solutions they’ve come up to the problems they’ve found.
