FAST-FOOD BOYCOTT CALL: Supporters of the $15 minimum-wage campaign are calling for three fast-food chains to be boycotted in Seattle today and say they will have demonstrations outside. The only one with outlets in West Seattle is McDonald’s.

MORGAN JUNCTION MURDER TRIAL: As we finish writing this highlight list, we are back at the King County Courthouse for the second day of presentations to the jury in the trial of Lovett Chambers for the 2012 shooting death of Travis Hood – here’s our detailed report, published late last night, about the first day, which included both sides’ opening statements. Proceedings were scheduled to start at 9, but a witness is running late.

DESIGN REVIEW FOR 2626 ALKI AVE. SW: First time in a while that the Southwest Design Review Board has had only one project on its schedule, and it’s also the first mixed-use Alki project in a long time: 2626 Alki SW, which would replace three commercial buildings at Alki and 59th. It’s proposed for 14 residential units, 5 live-work, 3,250 sf of retail, and 28 parking spaces; the first public presentation about the plan was at last June’s Alki Community Council meeting. The Design Review packet has yet to be linked from the page where it’s supposed to be publicly available with at least a week to go; one did turn up elsewhere on the DPD site (not directly linkable) in December, but we’re checking to see if that’s still the newest one. Six months ago, the Westwood-Roxhill-Arbor Heights Community Council together with the Highland Park Action Committee and the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council called on the Seattle Department of Transportation and their King County DOT counterparts to perform a safety study on SW Roxbury Street. Everyone in our area knows how bad the speeding issues are. There are sections of sidewalk missing. We have a large number of accidents.

We asked on July 21, 2013, six months ago. Now, all the safety studies and research are done. SDOT is now in charge of the project, and are going to perform outreach for your feedback in implementing the solutions they’ve come up to the problems they’ve found.

Snow adorns ribbons on trees at the former substation at 50th & Dakota St. Neighbors put ribbons on the trees last weekend to save them from cutting by Seattle City Light. West Seattle Green Space Coalition is meeting today, Sun. Feb 9 at Delridge Library at 3:00. The public is invited to join in planning ways to find the best future uses for the old substations.

SOUTH PARK GREEN SPACE: For those who work and/or live in South Park, it’s time to speak out about a greener future – a 5-8 pm event tonight:

South Park provides a ripe and exciting opportunity for the creation and enhancement of parks, trails, and green spaces. Today, the neighborhood has fewer parks per than many other communities in the city, and public access to the Duwamish River is limited.

However, this is poised to change. Through the South Park Green Space Vision Plan, neighbors are coming together to collectively envision a different future for their shared public spaces. The South Park Green Space Vision Plan is engaging residents, businesses and workers to identify needs, opportunities and priorities for improved public spaces, such as parks, playgrounds, trails, greenways, viewpoints, dog parks and sidewalks. Based on community feedback, a vision plan for a network of connected public spaces will be developed for South Park, as well as designs for the top priority opportunities.
