Happy day-before-the-4th! If you’re looking for holiday info, find it on the WSB West Seattle 4th of July page; as for today, here are a few notes:

NO BRIDGE CLOSURES TILL THE WEEKEND: Since we usually start the daily preview with an update on what’s closed today/tonight – we’ll note here that everything’s open. No 99 closures are scheduled for the rest of the week; the Spokane Street Viaduct has nothing planned until a Thursday night lane closure and then the full-weekend westbound closure (both detailed here).

TRAFFIC ALERT: The westbound Spokane Street Viaduct will close 10 pm tonight till 5 am Tuesday (as noted in our list of this week’s closures). Reminder – the 1st Avenue onramp to the westbound SSV is now available to emergency vehicles if they need it, so don’t be startled if you happen to see that in action; the city doesn’t expect it’ll be ready for everybody else till the whole project’s done around summer’s end.

Again, in a nutshell, stores are not supposed to offer plastic shopping bags any more, unless they are sturdy, thick, reusable plastic; if you didn’t bring your own bag and want a paper bag, they’re supposed to charge you at least a nickel. Here’s the city’s infopage.

PET FOOD DRIVE: Alki Mail and Dispatch (47th/Admiral) is collecting pet food for two nonprofits all month long, starting today (they open at 9).

West Seattle Tuesday: SB Viaduct closure tonight; retirement-living Town Hall today; more

Those are the tables and chairs placed in Junction Plaza Park by the West Seattle Junction Association. They are this morning’s “photo of the day” in honor of their continued existence – when we reported their installation two-plus weeks ago, a few commenters predicted they’d vanish within a few weeks; we countered good-naturedly with faith in humanity (despite 30 years in news). The tables/chairs have been there almost three weeks, so three cheers for optimism … and for a place to enjoy lunch in the park. On with the calendar highlights:

TONIGHT’S TRAFFIC ALERT: From our custom-combined list of this week’s closures, day-by-day: Just one for today/tonight – the southbound Alaskan Way Viaduct will be closed overnight, 9 pm-5 am. (P.S. In a series of legacy albums produced by Paul Eubanks, the cultural future was permanently preserved in the ancestral stories and wisdom of Taqw-seblu and other tribal elders. It was their wish that the culture be preserved by sharing it – with the goal of making the material available to all who seek it, now and in the future. Paul Eubanks, an adopted grandson of Taqw-seblu, honors these elders with photos, prints and a series of presentations that illuminate the background stories regarding the production of these legacy albums.

Evergreen trees intercept twice the rainfall as deciduous trees, particularly during winter.” 10 am-1 pm today, you can help take care of native plants at the Sanislo School Wetland, 1812 SW Myrtle. Help appreciated even if you have as little as an hour to spare. Meet in front of the school. The list of public-comment speakers includes several who plan to address the announcement (first reported here Friday) that Middle College High School will move from South Seattle Community College to portables at the Boren Building, which also will be home to the new K-5 STEM elementary. The agenda includes next year’s budget, with funding for reopening Fairmount Park – to come from past-levy-related money rather than next year’s BEX IV levy – among the line items. Board meetings now start at 4:15 pm, with the public-comment period at 5, at district HQ in SODO; here’s the agenda.

DINNER AND MUSIC AT THE SENIOR CENTER: Doors open at 5 pm for a turkey dinner and live music at the Senior Center of West Seattle (California/Oregon), headlined by Casey MacGill. Details here; reservations requested.

2 HOT TOPICS AT DELRIDGE NEIGHBORHOODS DISTRICT COUNCIL: Tonight’s 7 pm meeting of the council with reps from organizations around eastern West Seattle has two hot topics on the agenda: the proposed Delridge rechannelization, and the plan for 200 Highland Park homes to get trash service every other week as part of the city’s pilot project starting next month. Public’s welcome; the meeting’s at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (4408 Delridge Way SW).

SUMMER SOLSTICE SUNSET WATCH: As previewed here last night – be at Solstice Park around 8:45 pm and watch the sunset (expected just after 9) with West Seattle-residing NASA Solar System Ambassador Alice Enevoldsen. Her website explains the event, and how to get to Solstice Park if you haven’t been there before.

More on the calendar!

Watch the Summer Solstice sunset with an expert guide at Solstice Park

We can’t guarantee the sunset will look like this (though the forecast is promising, if chilly) …

(Jim in Fauntleroy shared the photo this week but says it’s from about 3 weeks ago)
… but tomorrow night, you can celebrate the summer-solstice sunset at West Seattle’s own Solstice Park, during the 13th seasonal sunset watch with NASA Solar System Ambassador Alice Enevoldsen. Sunset as seen from the park over the north end of Lincoln Park (location info here) is usually about 10 minutes before the “official” time, which, she says, means you’d want to be there by 8:45 pm for the 9:01-or-so sunset. Read more about it on her website, Alice’s Astro Info.

P.S. The actual solstice moment is 4:09 pm our time Wednesday.

P.P.S. Alice is looking for suggestions for where to host a Mars Landing Watch event on August 5th around 10:30 pm – Internet required. Any ideas?

West Seattle Monday: Green schools; public safety; traffic alerts…

(“Clearing” on Wednesday, according to the newest forecast – just in time for the official arrival of summer and West Seattle Solstice Sunset Watch!) Looking ahead to the rest of today and tonight:

TRAFFIC ALERTS: Spokane Street Viaduct eastbound lanes and one westbound lane are scheduled to be closed 10 pm-5 am, along with additional surface-street closures overnight in SODO (detailed here). Prospective volunteers especially welcome to come check out the group.

PUBLIC SAFETY – A COMMUNITY CONVERSATION: Not in West Seattle but a topic affecting us all. And the announcement comes from West Seattleite Susie Tennant of Town Hall Seattle:

Town Hall Seattle staff, members, and board are deeply shaken and disturbed by the events that took place so close to our offices on May 30th. The other shooting the same day, previous incidents in May, and earlier in the year have caused us great concern. Like all of Seattle, we are trying to process the situation and wonder what we as a community can do to address it. As an institution whose purpose is to create a safe place for the expression of ideas, and which has hosted community conversations on topics including education, Occupy Seattle, artist space, the environment, and more, we can think of no more appropriate response than to gather as a community for a constructive conversation about these events which affect us all. A group of city leaders and citizens — including Mayor Mike McGinn, Seattle Police Chief John Diaz, Councilmember Bruce Harrell, Mariko Lockhart, director of Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative, Seattle Times columnist Danny Westneat, and others — will discuss issues of public safety, gun safety, mental illness, gangs, and how a community not only stays safe, but heals itself after such tragedies.

7:30 tonight, free with reservation at brownpapertickets.com. Town Hall is at 1119 8th Ave. downtown.

DJ NIGHT AT WEST 5: Monday night means the “Flat Earth Society” at West 5 in The Junction, with guest DJs and fab vinyl. Tonight, Rosemary Otero of Light in the Attic Records is scheduled, 9 pm.

And there’s more! Check out the calendar.

This year, we will be doing some clean up and restoration at Lincoln Park. We will be fixing some of the trails to try and keep the trails safer and less muddy in the rainy season. Just in case we don’t get to see the Olympics today, there’s a photo we took Monday morning. Otherwise, there’s no looking back – lots going on tonight. From the WSB West Seattle Events Calendar, some highlights for today/tonight:

TONIGHT’S TRAFFIC ALERT: Another overnight closure planned for the southbound Alaskan Way Viaduct/Highway 99 stretch between Battery St. Tunnel and West Seattle Bridge, 9 pm-5 am (here’s our full list of this week’s closures, including the all-weekend, both-ways AWV/99 closure).

PRE-MEETING POTLUCK FOR ADMIRAL NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION: This isn’t business as usual for ANA, but president Katy Walum said at last week’s Admiral District business gathering that given recent troubling events around the city, it might be a good time for people to get to know each other better, spend a little more time face-to-face, rather than just rushing in at the last minute and jumping right into a meeting. So at 6 pm, lower-level meeting room at Admiral Congregational Church (California/Hill), you’re invited to a potluck – bring something to share – before tonight’s 7 pm meeting. You can even come to the potluck and not stay for the meeting. More info in this update on the ANA website.

STUDENT CONCERTS: School-concert season is wrapping up with 1:30 and 6:30 pm performances scheduled at Roxhill Elementary (30th/Roxbury).
