From comments: Tom Stewart memorial website; graffiti tipster

In case you “don’t usually read the comments” – there are tons today, and we thank everyone for taking the time to share their thoughts. Two things of note we just found by reviewing the most recent wave:

TOM STEWART MEMORIAL SITE: As with many highly successful people, the owner/chair of formerly West Seattle-based Services Group of America clearly had a lot of fans, and non-fans. For those who wish to share condolences in a more official way than commenting on news stories, a commenter on WSB points out that SGA has now set up a webpage with links to family and business photos as well as an option for commenting. Here’s the link. Meantime, nothing new so far in the investigation of the Arizona helicopter crash that killed him along with his wife, 5-year-old daughter, and two others.

GRAFFITI TIPSTER: Our filter (which has saved the site from more than a million spammer “comments,” so we try not to get mad at its occasional error) held onto this comment for a long time till we just spotted it – Paul says he tipped police to the suspected graffiti vandals arrested last night, and implores you to “get involved”:

I am the person who witnessed the 3 kids applying their tags to the Rite-Aid wall. I called it in and while waiting for police, followed the kids from a distance, then called back to alert police of their location. No flag waving but the point is that I got involved and stayed involved until (luckily) resulted in the 3 arrests. These are young (young!) kids. Please get involved when the opportunity arises. The only way to end tagging is to make it difficult for taggers to achieve their goal. Handcuffs do that really well.

Police reiterate, call 911 when something is happening NOW – don’t worry about evaluating if it’s a real emergency; the 911 operator’s job is to sort that out. Meantime, following the graffiti-arrest story, we asked your opinions on the state of the spray-paint (etc.) vandalism problem in West Seattle – please consider joining the discussion if you haven’t already.

What else is up? Here’s the frequently updated WSB Events calendar.

West Seattle scenes: Almost spring

With what winter we had (didn’t have) indisputably fading, springlike beauty keeps cropping up. The field of primroses was photographed by WSB’er “westseattledood” at Westwood Village QFC. Along for the walk – the faithful companion, checking out the daffodils:

Also out and about this afternoon (as usual) – Chas Redmond, who caught the beauty of Alki even as the afternoon clouds started crowding out the sun:

East of there, Chas says he asked workers what’s up with the 53rd Avenue Pump Station work – which’ll be discussed at Thursday night’s Alki Community Council meeting – and they told him the pedestrian path should be open within a week or so; then there’s still work to do on the outside traffic lane. ADDED 12:33 AM: Two more MUST-SEE photos – West Seattleite Alice Enevoldsen shares husband Jason Gift Enevoldsen‘s photos of the Tuesday night crescent moon on her website, here.

Today/tonight: Music camp, furloughs, Fat Tuesday x 3, more…

MID-WINTER BREAK MUSIC CAMP STARTS TODAY – and there’s still room at this camp for 4th-8th grade musicians, held at Denny International Middle School, according to this comment from leader Marcus Pimpleton on our original announcement. Be there, 9 am. Details here.

CITY FURLOUGHS – The city’s spreading its money-saving furlough days around – today, Neighborhood Service Centers (including The Junction and Delridge) are closed, and some SDOT workers are on furlough.

STATE OF THE CITY – Not a furlough day for Mayor Mike McGinn; he’s giving his first State of the City speech at 2 pm. If you can’t be at City Hall to see it in person, watch live on Seattle Channel, online or on cable 21.

FAT TUESDAY #1 – PACZKIS GONE WILD: It’s Fat Tuesday, and the second annual edition of a wacky tradition at Metropolitan Market/Admiral (WSB sponsor) – an intracompany competition involving the filled Polish donuts called paczkis (pronounced POONCH-keys). You’re welcome to watch (and we’re told paczkis and coffee will be handed out to spectators), 11 am. (Here’s our story from last year.)

West Seattle weekend scenes: Workout; rainbow; “The King”

From the Hero Memorial Workout at CrossFit West Seattle in the Admiral District on Sunday afternoon: Sometimes, the intensity of an activity is shown most vividly in the moments when participants pause, like this. The workout was in memory of SPD Officer Tim Brenton, murdered in the line of duty on Halloween night, and a fundraiser for the Behind the Badge Foundation. Also from the Admiral District, a sight in the sky:

A Valentine’s rainbow arced in the east (thanks also to “k” for sending a shot of it). One more sighting – “The King” really did materialize at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market, as promised by market managers:

Nice jumpsuit! That’s a Twitpic, tweeted by @callingindead.

Tonight: “Mission: Sustainable,” Art Walk, WSHS open house, more!

“MISSION: SUSTAINABLE” PREMIERE PARTY: Megan Hilfer and Martin Westerman, seen in the clips above, are two of the West Seattleites involved with a pilot project to create a reality show, “Mission: Sustainable,” about lifestyle eco-makeovers. They’ve produced a 45-minute pilot and it will be shown at a “green-carpet” party at Seattle Center‘s Fisher Pavilion tonight; you’re invited, it’s free, be there by 7 pm. Though the original RSVP site shows “sold out,” Megan – who co-hosts the pilot – says there should be room, just don’t be late.

WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: That’s the tasty art of Jessica Creager, on view at Wallflower Custom Framing (WSB sponsor) – which is honoring the occasion with cupcakes and chocolates – during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk, 6-9 pm, all over the peninsula. Other spotlighted artists are featured at wsartwalk.com; last night we featured Holy Rosary students with a Haiti-fundraiser bake sale during The Kenney’s Art Walk event, and remember the shuttle service that can take you there and other southern points, including shuttle sponsor Sterling Images Gallery, from The Junction (full details here). Your Art Walk walking/driving map is here.

WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE: 6 pm tonight, the school known as “Westside” opens its doors to incoming 9th graders and their families, with an open house that includes presentations, performances, panel discussions, and even free admission to a basketball game. The full program’s on the WSHS home page, here.

ARBOR HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY OPEN HOUSE: This school is also welcoming prospective families tonight, 6:30-8:30 pm. (Data point: AH is the only local public elementary we know of that’s on Facebook and Twitter [@arborhts].)

ADMIRAL SAFEWAY DESIGN REVIEW: 6:30 pm tonight, Youngstown Cultural Arts Center. This will be the 5th time the project has come before the Southwest Design Review Board. You can see the newest design revisions here – the focus tonight is supposed to be on the California SW frontage (newest rendering above). Remember that public comment IS taken at these meetings – so if you have an opinion on this project, be there if you can.

WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL: 7 pm at Southwest Community Center; the agenda includes updates on community murals, street projects, crime and city-grant deadlines, as detailed by the official flyer.

Lots more – including a Log House Museum guest speaker and the South Park Bridge closure reminder – on the WSB Events page!

RIP, “Deadliest Catch” Captain Phil Harris – visited here in 2008

philsigns.jpg

Just heard the news about the death of Captain Phil Harris from “Deadliest Catch.” Went to the WSB archives and hauled out that photo of his West Seattle Thriftway coffee-selling appearance in September 2008. Big crowd lined up that day to meet him, as you can see in our coverage (which included video).

Monday photos: Tony’s Produce opens; Justice hoofs it; 747; SUN!

As promised when we dropped by for a sneak peek two weeks ago, Tony’s Produce at 35th/Barton (map) has opened for the season as of today. 8 am till 7 pm. When we talked to Tony last month, he mentioned stocking more organics; today’s specials include organic blueberries. They were still stocking the stand when we dropped by around noontime, so you’ll have to see for yourself what else they’ve set out. Just a few blocks east of Tony’s, Becky snapped and shared this:

That’s Justice the police horse, seen at Westwood Village. (If you didn’t know this already – SPD’s Mounted Patrol has its headquarters in Highland Park, adjacent to Westcrest Park.) Now, we head north, for a West Seattleite’s view of today’s high-flying milestone – Scott C shared this photo of the aviation milestone everyone’s watching today, the 747-8’s first flight:

Speaking of the sky, the skyline shot you’ve seen a thousand times nonetheless had a nice touch when we stopped by Seacrest early this afternoon, with the drifting clouds:

Tomorrow looks even better.

Today/tonight: Pigeon Point Council; principals @ Gatewood; VOTE

PIGEON POINT: Live in this hilly northeastern West Seattle neighborhood? Join your neighbors at tonight’s Pigeon Point Neighborhood Council meeting, 7 pm, Pathfinder @ Cooper School (1901 SW Genesee).

MADISON/WSHS PRINCIPALS @ GATEWOOD: The district’s new Student Assignment Plan has Gatewood Elementary feeding Madison Middle School and West Seattle High School, instead of Denny/Sealth. So the Gatewood PTA has both schools’ principals speaking at its meeting tonight, 6:30 pm @ Gatewood’s library (we’re now told it’s in the cafeteria; 4320 SW Myrtle).

LAST FULL DAY TO GET YOUR BALLOT IN THE MAIL: Tomorrow’s Election Day for two Seattle Public Schools levies. Remember, no more West Seattle/White Center dropboxes. So get your ballot out via postal mail today.

What else is up today/tonight? See the WSB Events calendar.

Today/tonight: Go, Denny!; Adopt-A-Street; Have A Heart; more

And that barely scratches the surface of what’s up today/tonight in and around West Seattle – including the WestSide Baby fundraising tea (sold out!) and the Chief Sealth HS music program dinner-dance; the longer list is in the West Seattle Weekend Lineup.
