West Seattle, Washington
13 Tuesday

Write your own caption for the crab caught on cam by Edgar Riebe from Captive Eye Media, during Lafayette Elementary second-graders’ field trip to Me-Kwa-Mooks during low tide on Monday. Tide’s still low enough for good beach-roaming today – and the naturalists are out again too – see this story for more. Meantime, it’s graduation night for the Chief Sealth International High School Class of 2010, 5 pm at Memorial Stadium downtown … Support the USO by dining at Merrill Gardens-Admiral Heights (WSB sponsor) 4-6 pm (full details here) … 10 am-2 pm today, workers from pet-food company Nutro will be spiffing up Westcrest Off-Leash Dog Area (on the heels of the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle event last Saturday!) … Tonight’s marquee meeting is the West Seattle Crime Prevention Council, 7 pm at Southwest Precinct, with special guest, City Attorney Pete Holmes … Also tonight, the Tuesday night stand-up paddleboarding event is back at Alki Kayak Tours, 5-8 pm … And 6 am-6 pm, you can turn out in support of Running For Hope (read the preview here). … More on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar!

Using a fan paraglider is ONE alternative means of transportation – three more conventional modes are under discussion in West Seattle tonight, as the mayor’s Walk/Bike/Ride initiative comes to Delridge Community Center at 6 pm to ask you questions such as: What would make it easier to get around our area without a car? (Regardless of whether you can or can’t make the meeting, you can fill out this online ballot to share your thoughts.) … Also today/tonight, two other city government-related events with West Seattle ramifications, though they’re happening off-peninsula: First, 10:30 this morning is when we will all find out how the city will cut an estimated $12 million from its budget for the rest of the year – there have long been rumors that some parks facilities/programs would be affected, for example, but finally the speculation will end when the City Council, sitting as the Budget Committee, is briefed this morning on whatever cuts, in whichever departments, will be made. (Seattle Channel will show it live and we hope to have a streaming window here on WSB, too.) … Speaking of Parks, tonight is when West Seattleites who are pitching for a share of the Parks and Green Spaces Levy Opportunity Fund get to make presentations to the Levy Oversight Committee. See the applications and staff ratings here; the open house starts at Magnuson Park‘s Workshop/View Ridge Room at 5:15, presentations start at 6:30. … More of your Monday on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar.
Quick look at today/tonight highlights: Low-tide time again, -2.3 at 10:49 am (here’s the chart – gets even lower this weekend) … West Seattle’s first major high-school commencement ceremony of the month is tonight, Seattle Lutheran High School … Tonight’s the wine and jazz fundraiser for Chief Sealth International High School‘s Jazz Band @ EB Foote Winery in Burien – e-mail pdsampson@comcast.net to be sure tickets are still available … The rescheduled summer wine release at South Seattle Community College is today and tomorrow … Last day of “filing week” if you’re thinking of running for something (for local races, no surprises so far on the state list or county list) … Illusions Hair Design (WSB sponsor) hosts a special art/food/wine event tonight … The annual Seattle Playwrights Studio showcase starts tonight at ArtsWest … More details on the above – and more events – on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar page!
That’s the new promotional video for the monthly West Seattle Art Walk – and tonight’s the June edition, 6-9 pm, dozens of venues all over our peninsula (here’s the printable map). Baked goods figure prominently in tonight’s plan – new Heavenly Pastry in the Admiral District makes its Art Walk debut, and Baked in Seattle marks its “grand opening” in part of the Blue Willow space in The Junction … Or if you want something to wash down the baked treats, Bin 41 wine shop (WSB sponsor) is having a wine tasting for those who stop in during Art Walk – live music too. And at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, the Art Lending Library is open tonight – a rare occasion! Check wsartwalk.com for Art Walk venue previews. Also tonight, the 1st official meeting of the new Genesee-Schmitz Neighborhood Council, 7 pm at West Side Presbyterian Church (more here) … The city Parks Board will hear a briefing, with time for public comment, on the possibility that King County might seek to place a Combined Sewer Overflow-reduction facility at Lowman Beach Park – the briefing paper’s here; the meeting’s at 7 pm at Woodland Park Zoo, in the Activity Center near the west entrance … More, on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar page.
Busiest night this week, and here are some of the reasons why:
WATER TAXI TOWN HALL: The passenger ferry between West Seattle and downtown has made news for a long list of reasons these past few months. If you’ve got questions, concerns, ideas, about any of them, or anything that hasn’t come up but is on your mind, this is your chance to bring it directly to the people responsible for the service. King County Councilmember Jan Drago, who chairs the Ferry District board, hosts a Town Hall at Alki Community Center, 7 pm. (Earlier in the day, the Ferry District executive committee meets this afternoon to discuss the new cash-handling policies promised in the wake of the theft arrest announced last week.)
4TH PLANNING MEETING FOR THE TRIANGLE: The city-convened advisory group meets for the 4th time tonight – and the scheduled discussion centers on what may be the hottest topic yet: Land use. Some of the businesses that have thrived in the area over the decades have expressed concern that they will be squeezed out. Will Triangle zoning change, and should it? These meetings include a public-comment period, so you’re invited to be part of the discussion, 6 pm at the Senior Center of West Seattle.
34TH DISTRICT DEMOCRATS: This year’s elections are nearing, with the August primary now two months away (check here and here to see who’s filed so far), and that means even more than usual for our area’s biggest political group to discuss. But center stage on tonight’s scheduled agenda are city leaders including Mayor Mike McGinn and Council President Richard Conlin, plus a legislative update from Rep. Eileen Cody (the lone 34th District legislator running for re-election to her current job). 7 pm, The Hall at Fauntleroy.
SOUTH PARK BUSINESS SURVIVAL: The mayor is also expected at this pivotal meeting for the future of the businesses whose customer access will be dramatically affected when the county closes the South Park Bridge permanently on June 30th. This meeting’s at 6:30 at the South Park Community Center (we have a message out to the mayor’s office to ask what time he’s subsequently due in West Seattle).
WEST SEATTLE SNOWSPORTS COUNCIL: As previewed here last night, this group – still in the planning process – has its second meeting at 6 pm at Mountain to Sound Outfitters in The Triangle, 3602 SW Alaska.
Lots more on the list – see the WSB West Seattle Events calendar for more (and if we’re missing something, please let us know!)
One day after our latest Admiral Safeway project update, you can hear from point people on the project in person during tonight’s Admiral Neighborhood Association meeting at Admiral UCC Church, 7 pm … that’s also meeting time for the Fauntleroy Community Association, at The Hall at Fauntleroy … Want to be sure you’re ready for anything? As first noted during Disaster Preparedness Month coverage, tonight’s the next free Seattle Neighborhoods Actively Prepare class in West Seattle, 6:30 pm at Delridge Library (full info here) … more on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar!

(Weekend photo taken at Jack Block Park in West Seattle by David Hutchinson)
Today’s buzz: At Pathfinder K-8 (1901 SW Genesee on Pigeon Point), P-E teacher Lou Cutler raises money for Make-A-Wish with his annual birthday run – starting at 8:45 am – go cheer him on (you can pledge online too) … At 9 am, all around the state, it’s the official start of online/in-person candidate-filing week for the August primary; if you’re thinking of running for something, info’s here … Tonight at 6 at West Seattle Golf Course, as part of the current city-spearheaded Triangle planning process, everyone who’s interested is invited to take a look at, and get an overview of, Triangle park facilities, including WSGC … Tonight at 6:30 at Hiawatha Community Center, it’s the second crime-prevention forum presented by the Admiral Neighborhood Association … At 6:45, the evening book group at Southwest Library discusses Thomas Friedman‘s “From Beirut to Jerusalem.”
To see more of what’s up, check the WSB West Seattle Events calendar any time!
Much quieter today – but there are still a few things of note on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar, including: The renowned Music Sunday at Fauntleroy Church (WSB sponsor) is today, 10 am … one more performance for “Fool for Love” in Easy Street Café, “pay what you will,” 8 pm tonight … cherries make their debut at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market, 10 am-2 pm (here’s the Ripe and Ready list) … and the Furry Faces fundraiser plant sale/adoption event continues at 3809 46th SW (plant sale 10 am-4 pm, cat/dog adoptions noon-4).

Three quick notes as the weekend approaches:
SCHMITZ PARK STAFFERS VOTE ON SUPERINTENDENT: We’ve received this from several education-related sources: 15 “union members” at Schmitz Park Elementary are reported to have voted “no confidence” in Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Maria Goodloe-Johnson. Here’s one post about it. The Save Seattle Schools site has reported a few other such votes outside West Seattle, including Ballard HS.
SWINERY PATIO: Maybe THIS will bring summery weather? The Swinery is opening its courtyard patio for lunch service as of next Tuesday, according to longtime WSB contributor Christopher Boffoli (and it’s also confirmed on their FB page). If you haven’t been there lately, take note that they’ve been writing about expanded food offerings – including hot takeout food for dinner.
