Huling Bowl countdown: Chief Sealth vs. West Seattle on Friday

If you only go to one high-school football game this season … this Friday night is the one. It’s the annual crosstown contest between West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School, known as the Huling Bowl (the trophy above will be held by the winning team till the following year), an event long supported by the Huling family, including a free barbecue before the game (get there early! barbecue at 5, football at 7, Southwest Athletic Complex). Sealth athletic director Sam Reed says there’ll also be face-painting stations in both schools’ colors, and since this is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, you’ll see some pink – including pink socks for both teams and their cheer squads, and pink paint/hairspray for fans. SW Athletic Complex is at 2801 SW Thistle.

Another new West Seattle business is planning its open house for this coming weekend – Saturday (October 13th), 11 am to 7 pm, you’re invited to drop by West Seattle Fight and Fitness. It’s the new martial-arts studio we told you about last month, which just remodeled and moved into what had been a boat business at 5050 Delridge Way SW – they are now in their second week of opeartion. All three of our area’s high-school-football varsity teams played tonight. West Seattle High School had the lone win, visiting Ingraham in North Seattle and defeating the Rams 44-13, per our partners at The Seattle Times; it was homecoming night for Chief Sealth International High School, which had a big 4th-quarter comeback but not enough to avoid losing to visiting Nathan Hale, 43-23 (full report with photos coming up later); and on the road, Seattle Lutheran High School was blanked by La Conner, 45-0 (thanks to David DeSiga for the updates).

New 5K: First-ever West Seattle Monster Dash in 4 weeks

Tomorrow, the Beat the Burn 5K (and festival!) is set for Jack Block Park. But that’s NOT the last 5K of the year in this area – a new one has just been announced, the West Seattle Monster Dash, on October 27th. It’s a benefit for the West Seattle Co-Op Preschools (WSB sponsor) – and it’s planned for a course in upper Lincoln Park. It’s a Halloween theme, organizers say, “so costumes are STRONGLY encouraged,” and they’re planning prizes for best individual and group costumes. Registration info’s here.

Under the direction of new music teacher Ethan Thomas, the West Seattle High School Band made its marching debut Friday night, at halftime during the WSHS homecoming game at Southwest Athletic Complex.

Seahawk Spirit triumphed not only in the stands but also on the field Friday night at Memorial Stadium downtown, where Chief Sealth International High School trounced Franklin HS in varsity football, 60-26.

It wasn’t just a crosstown showdown, but also a match between unbeaten-in-conference rivals, when West Seattle High School visited Chief Sealth International HS for varsity volleyball tonight. (In the top photo, Sealth’s Zoe Haywood tapped the ball over West Seattle defenders, from left, Maddie Collins – who had 30 assists for WSHS – Devon Fox, and Eastyn Baleto.) The home crowd was intense…

At halftime, when WSB contributing photojournalist Nick Adams photographed Chief Sealth International High School head football coach Luther Carr III talking to the team (top photo), they were down 25-0, at Bishop Blanchet. In the second half, they scored two touchdowns, but those weren’t enough.

Homecoming today for Seattle Lutheran High School, and while the football team lost the game, it was a fun afternoon just the same:

Pregame barbecue tailgating in the West Seattle Stadium parking lot, of course. In the stadium, homecoming royalty was driven around the track in golf carts – here’s homecoming queen Maddy Jones:

(See everybody in the homecoming court, later in this story.) Then, there was the winning homecoming “float,” lampooning the latest warning that the world would end this year:

The “floats” were audio/visual carts lent to the students to decorate; the seniors’ “post-apocalyptic class” float won a vote and therefore came to the game – the others were to be on display at the homecoming dance. Now on to the game –

FIRST REPORT, 7:31 AM: If you’re following the SODO arena story, you are probably more than well aware of reports late last night that City Councilmembers and arena backers reached a deal (here’s what our partners at the Seattle Times wrote). This morning, word’s just in that three councilmembers plan “an announcement” at 9:30 am – if you want to watch live, they’re planning to stream it online (here’s the link). The councilmembers (President Sally Clark, Tim Burgess, Mike O’Brien) were among the eight who sent the arena contingent a letter in late July expressing concerns about the proposed deal.

Seattle Lutheran High School‘s varsity football team had to travel about five hours for today’s game vs. Lake Roosevelt. We just got word they are coming home with a win, 19-6.

The Chief Sealth International High School Seahawks were on the road Friday night, but had a strong cheering section on hand for the game against Cleveland at Memorial Stadium downtown. The first game of the season is in the books: At Southwest Athletic Complex tonight, in a hard-fought game, it was Chief Sealth International High School 26, Evergreen High School (in White Center) 20.

This was the first game and the first win for Sealth’s new head football coach Luther Carr (who told us back in February, “If we do the right thing, the victories will come.”). WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand talked with him on camera right after the game:

Alki Beach 5K: Feet to the street to help breast-cancer patients

FIRST REPORT, 9:35 AM: Half an hour after they began, the runners and walkers are continuing to cross the line at the Alki Beach 5K, raising money for Northwest Hope and Healing, the West Seattleite-led nonprofit that helps breast-cancer patients.

Unofficial first results: Kelly Spady (photo above) was first male runner across the line, Karra Whitmire the first female:

Spectacular morning to run and/or walk along the beach. Video, more photos, and more results to come.

9:45 AM UPDATE: And now the official info on the top two F and top two M, from the timing booth:
*Females: 34-year-old Karra Whitmire of Bothell in 20:34 (chip time), 30-year-old Rebecca Martin of Seattle (21:09)
*Males: 25-year-old Kelly Spady of Mukilteo in 17:12, 17-year-old Jack Griffing of Mountlake Terrace (18:13)

Almost 1,000 people were signed up as of just before race time – we’ll check back with NWHH. We’ll also be adding video from the start of the race (our traditional “all participants as they head out” clip), including what the special inspirational guest speaker, survivor Tami Hyldahl-Haan, told the runners/walkers just before the start. Note: There were two medical calls before the end of the race – one in the 2800 block of Alki, one in the 1700 block. Police told us the person in the 1700 block collapsed with a possible heart attack; race organizers confirm they got word it’s someone who was registered as a walker. We don’t have any condition information so far.

This afternoon, the players, coaches, and cheerleaders took to the West Seattle Stadium field for a “Media Day” full of photo sessions and drills, under a perfect blue sky – SLHS blue, of course.
