The first seeding game for the 3A State Basketball Tournament was a matchup of two teams that were very familiar with each other’s offense. That led to a tight and low-scoring affair, but in the fourth quarter Seattle Prep built a lead that Chief Sealth was never able to completely overcome. Prep beat Sealth 51-48, and while the Seahawks went from being 10 points down to being tied with the Panthers in the last minutes of the game, Prep was able to close them out with these last second free throws by their junior forward Mitch Brewe.

(Clip is silent, to excise personal chat by people who were nearby)
Prep was effective underneath the basket only at the end of the game. Sealth managed to build a lead in the first half off long-range shots and a steady supply of free throws by senior guard Keon Lewis. Sealth moves on to play on Saturday in Bellevue at 11:30. They’ll meet the loser of tonight’s O’Dea-Bellevue game, which is under way right now.

Update: West Seattle Soccer Club’s Jets win statewide tournament

The Super Bowl was not the only sports event of note this afternoon! As reported here last night, two West Seattle Soccer Club teams made it into the finals of the prestigious Founder’s Cup statewide tournament. We just got official word of the results. Both games went into overtime, according to WSSC’s Tim McMonigle, who says the BU-13 West Seattle Jets won 1-0, while the BU-16 West Seattle Moctezuma lost 3-2: “Two very exciting games!”

Congratulations to the West Seattle Jets (BU-13) and West Seattle Moctezuma (BU-16) teams for making it into the championship round of the Founder’s Cup state tournament! West Seattle Soccer Club‘s Tim McMonigle sent word tonight that both won their games today, and it’s the first time WSSC has had two teams in the finals (Moctezuma is defending champ in its age group). The Founder’s Cup, Tim explains, is for both recreational and select teams, so: “This means these two recreational teams have beat select teams to become one of the best (two) teams in the state at their age group, which is a very big accomplishment for these boys.” Tomorrow’s games are at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, with the Jets playing on field 3 at 2:45 pm, Moctezuma on field 2 at 3:15 pm. Good luck! (P.S. As noted here earlier this week, registration is now under way for WSSC’s spring season – more info on the club’s website.)

West Seattle Super Bowl parties: Beer Church’s benefit Bowlbecue

As we start building the annual list of where to watch the Super Bowl in West Seattle (got a public party? let us know!) next Sunday, we just got word of a benefit bash, presented by the Beer Church and Porterhouse Pub. Beer Church’s Kendall Jones explains, “We have three breweries participating – Georgetown Brewing, Port Townsend Brewing Company and Diamond Knot Brewing. A portion of the proceeds from those beers will be donated. Also, we’ll have big barbecues set up out front. Food in exchange for a donation. Drink beer, eat BBQ, watch the game, support kids. We’ll be setting up a projection TV outside. Weather permitting, of course. It will hopefully be an indoor-outdoor affair.” All this to benefit the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor), particularly its after-school programs for at-risk youth. More details here!

West Seattle High School’s new fastpitch-softball coaching team

Changes for softball at West Seattle High School, with details from parent volunteer Denise Liftin:

With the departure of Coach Carrie Burr at the beginning of the school year to take on other opportunities as Athletic Director and Activities Coordinator at Ballard High School , WSHS Wildcats Fastpitch had to say goodbye to their very successful coaching staff (also including Chuck Albany, Gordon Hessel and Alicia Hill, who had assisted Coach Burr).

Although the former staff will be missed, the team is excited that stepping in to take over the Wildcat Fastpitch tradition are new Head Coach Jim Perkins and Assistant Coach Deavonnie Spadoni, both of whom were involved with John F. Kennedy High School Fastpitch (Deavonnie as a catcher and Jim as an Assistant Coach)

City budget shockwaves: Youth-sports leagues fight fee hikes

(Panorama of Bar-S fields; photo courtesy West Seattle Little League)
Some sunny Saturday, not that far away, the West Seattle Little League will take the field at Bar-S Playfield. Right now, in addition to dealing with their ongoing Snack Shack project at the field, they are signing up players – and dealing with what WSLL president Mark Terao calls “shocking news”: They’re being asked to pay almost $13,000 in fees to the city this year, up from $5,000 last year, to help balance the city budget.

In a reply to Terao, circulated in a league-wide e-mail, Councilmember Sally Bagshaw, who chairs the Parks Committee, says the fee increases – for adult sports as well as youth sports, and other activities – are “unfortunate but necessary.” Tomorrow, WSLL reps are planning to bring their concerns to Bagshaw and Councilmember Sally Clark at a community-conversation event they are hosting on First Hill, and at least one other local youth-sports organization is hoping to do the same – more on that later.

For one example of how the fee increase translates, Terao explains:

Will Parks scrap the West Seattle driving range? Review almost done

Seattle Parks is about to decide whether or not to go ahead with the controversy-beset West Seattle Golf Course driving range. Last time we checked with project manager Garrett Farrell, to find out what was next after last year’s public meetings (most recent one, October) and unpopular design concepts, he suggested checking back in mid-January. So we did. Though Farrell wasn’t available for comment today, Parks leadership fielded our question and sent this answer through spokesperson Dewey Potter, saying they’re almost done with a review that might lead to the project being canceled completely :

You probably know that this project is the first project under the 2009 Golf Master Plan. The intent was to locate a new driving range west of the clubhouse along 35th Ave. SW. Unfortunately, as we moved into the detailed design and engineering phase, it became apparent that the location presented a number of unforeseen problems.

Our design team developed an option to locate the driving range closer to the clubhouse at the fairway for hole #9. This location would necessitate reconfiguring the hole and several pathways. Through three public meetings, the design team has tried to design the driving range in a way that preserves the integrity of the existing course and contains the overall project costs. As you know, the fairway 9 location has stirred some controversy and opposition by many West Seattle golfers.

Late last year ago Acting Parks Superintendent Christopher Williams and Acting Deputy Eric Friedli met with staff and closely reviewed:

1) the proposed plans for the driving range and related changes to the course
2) the public input received through the public review process
3) the costs and available funding for the project.

We have asked staff to conduct an additional review and analysis of the driving range project in the context of the entire Golf Master Plan for our review in January. After review of the project it is entirely possible that we will not press ahead with the West Seattle driving range project. We want to make sure that if the project does move forward it is consistent with the history of the course and meets the needs of the golfers; if it does not go forward, we will adjust the overall Golf Master Plan in a way that meets the needs across all our municipal courses. Eric met with the West Seattle Golf Men’s Club on January 12 to get a better understanding of their concerns.

The review should be complete in the next week or so and we will schedule another public meeting to present and discuss it with the golf community, and we’ll let you know when that meeting is scheduled.

The three design concepts proposed so far came out in August (concerns included a potential 90-foot-high net), September (concerns included potential alteration of 2 existing holes on the course), and October (concerns included potential changes to 3 holes).
