More info this morning about West Seattle student athletes in tournament play starting this week: We mentioned Seattle Lutheran High School over the weekend; this morning, an update on Chief Sealth High School‘s boys’ varsity team from athletic director Sam Reed:
The Chief Sealth boys’ basketball team will begin league play with a semi-final game Wednesday evening, February 17th, versus Seattle Prep High School. Sealth (13-7 overall, 12-3 league) earned the 3rd seed into the tournament and will play Seattle Prep (16-4 overall, 14-2 league) for the right to play for the Metro League title. Rainier Beach and Franklin face off in the other semi-final game. All four teams have already earned a guaranteed berth into next week’s district tournament.
The game will start at 7:00 p.m. at Seattle Prep High School (2400 11th Avenue East) [map]. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 students. The Metro League championship will be determined Friday, February 19th at 6:45 p.m. at Seattle Pacific University.
A few more notes from high-school basketball last night: Chief Sealth High School‘s boys’ varsity team solidified its 2nd-place ranking in the Metro Conference by beating Bainbridge last night, 72-56 (stats here). We took the photo above while visiting Hotwire late this morning; proprietor Lora Lewis says the Saints kept the lead even before the game – so Hotwire customers called it! Scores now, video and details to be added to this story later: In high-school varsity basketball at Chief Sealth High School tonight, both Sealth teams beat West Seattle High School – girls CSHS 40, WSHS 31; boys (just completed) CSHS 50, WSHS 39.
(Added 12:36 am Saturday, the details) GIRLS’ VARSITY: Chief Sealth’s Lady Seahawks combined a near perfect night of free throw shooting and a big defensive outing to beat West Seattle 40-31. The game was largely decided in the third quarter when Sealth managed to keep the Wildcats from moving the ball upcourt. Between effective rebounding and sharp passes, the Lady Wildcats found themselves spending most of their evening under Sealth’s basket. At times, both teams tried to shoot the ball from the perimeter, but neither had any success.

Is it possible to predict the Super Bowl just by a coffee beverage? The customers of Hotwire Online Coffeehouse think so. Starting today customers will begin purchasing the coffee shop’s two Super Bowl beverages in an attempt to predict the outcome of this Sundays game between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. The staff will keep track of the beverages purchased and tally up the sales as each drink is sold.
Customers can also leave their name and e-mail address along with their vote. If they pick the winning team Hotwire will give them a free 12 oz Americano and a free hour of Internet surfing. Says Lora Lewis, owner of Hotwire Coffee, “We were able to predict the outcome of the Presidential election with our ‘Barackacanno’ and our ‘Average Joe Biden’ (vote was 65 to 11) why not the Super Bowl?”
The Super Bowl drinks will be available through the third quarter of the Super Bowl Sunday then will be removed for final tally. Winning Customers can pick up their free beverages starting Monday.
The Super Bowl drinks are the New Orleans Saints ‘who-dat?’ special (dark chocolate/cinnamon mocha) and Indianapolis Colts special (blueberry/white chocolate mocha). They’ll be available through the third quarter on Sunday. Hotwire’s at 4410 California, just north of the Junction post office. Ready to roar onto the floor at KeyArena – those are the Throttle Rockets – one of the four Rat City Rollergirls teams who skated into 2010 with their first 2010 bout today (along with Grave Danger, Derby Liberation Front, and Sockit Wenches). Though their name hails from White Center (“Rat City”) and their home rink is downtown (KeyArena), there’s so much West Seattle presence on the RCRG, they’re practically a peninsula story. The teams battled each other to raise money for charities today – Lambert House for SW, Pinup Girls for DLF, Old Dog Haven for GD, Fisher House for TR. At South Seattle Community College (WSB sponsor) Saturday night, hundreds of people savored a full night of delights from appetizers and wine to chef-prepared culinary treats, during the annual “Gifts from the Earth” gala benefiting the SSCC Foundation. The all-star chef lineup included Dalis Chea from Fresh Bistro in The Junction and Jeremy McLachlan from Salty’s on Alki – each chef prepared dinner for two 10-person tables. Proceeds go to SSCC programs such as scholarships and tutoring. Meantime, West Seattle Bowl was also the scene of a fun benefit Saturday afternoon/evening:
That’s Judy Vann and Jason Vann – whose WS basketball roots go deep — at the sign-up table for the West Seattle Pride AAU Basketball fundraising bowl-a-thon. WS Pride is a new youth-athletics organization planning to start play in March, with basketball for ages 10-17, and supporters bowled today to help build up the coffers for teams to travel to tournaments. An emotional Friday night at the Seattle Lutheran High School gym, for several reasons. This ceremony was one of them: A new board was dedicated to honor the school’s track-record holders, and it’s named after the man who holds four long-distance records for SLHS: Eric Engelstone, a 1983 SLHS alum who died in 2004. The ceremony was held last night while Bear Creek was visiting – and that’s who Engelstone’s daughter Kendall plays for:

It was considered one of the biggest games in the city last night, with Sealth #2 in its division (behind Rainier Beach), Franklin #1 in its own (and last year’s state 3A champion). Sealth’s Keon Lewis led the scoring with 28 points; here’s a full game wrapup from our partners at the Seattle Times. The girls’ varsity game (stats here): Franklin 63, Sealth 44. A unique public-private partnership between Seattle Parks and Recreation and West Seattle Little League was on display during tonight’s public meeting at Alki Community Center discussing plans for building new concession stands, a restaurant and storage facilities at Bar-S Playfield.
Using funding from a $100,000 Mariners/Boeing grant announced in 2007, the new facilities will require no government funding and will be maintained by West Seattle Little League. In the works for decades, the Bar-S improvements are still awaiting final approval from several government agencies, but the hope is to finish the project by the start of Little League season.
“Baseball season for us starts in a couple months,” said Mark Terao, WSLL president. “My goal was to have it done by the opening jamboree, but it’s not realistic as to if that is going to happen.”
The designs for the new facilities were created by Rich Murakami, an architect who lives right next to the fields and donated his services.
The peninsula hooped it up Friday night, as all three high schools in West Seattle played host to visiting basketball challengers. Outside the gym at Chief Sealth/Boren, the hallway was home to a Haiti-relief fundraiser, as student volunteers (all from the junior class, the group above told us) held a bake sale to raise money for post-quake help. Back in the gym, the Sealth boys won – as did the peninsula’s other two boys-varsity teams – and the Sealth girls lost, as did the other two girls-varsity teams. Tonight, the boys – Chief Sealth High School edged West Seattle High School in varsity basketball, 37-36. (We tweeted it as-it-happened at @wsblive.) ADDED 10:35 PM: In our video clip, that’s the Seahawks’ Keon Lewis who picked up the shooting foul off West Seattle’s LeTrey Newsome with only one second on the clock. That clip we found on YouTube shows the crazy scene – what another YouTuber described as a “euphoric storming of the field” — after the University of Idaho Vandals’ one-point win over Bowling Green in the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise on Wednesday. This is notable for West Seattle, as pointed out in this note Allison sent this afternoon:
Former West Seattle High School standout, Aaron Grymes who now plays college football at University of Idaho, has won his first bowl game with the Vandals in the Humanitarian Bowl. They defeated Bowling Green St. 43-42.
Allison thought Westside supporters would want to hear this, if they hadn’t already. According to these game stats, he had two tackles in the game. (It was a year ago this month that Grymes changed his mind about college and decided to go to Idaho instead of UW.)
The West Seattle High School Wildcats took both ends of the West Seattle Holiday Basketball Classic on their home court Saturday night, with the varsity girls defeating Seattle Lutheran High School 55-26 and the boys pulling off a 42-32 win.
