West Seattle, Washington
14 Thursday
Congratulations and good luck to two teams from the West Seattle Road Runners – they are headed to the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships! Last night at Hiawatha, the girls (grouped as 7/8 year-olds and 9/10 year-olds) had their last practice before the trip to Reno. The 13 girls heading to the championships are coached by James Powell (pictured with the girls who were at last night’s practice) and Brandee Paisano.
2:25 PM: Big preseason event for high-school boys’ basketball, happening right now at Chief Sealth International High School: A dozen teams are playing 10-minute mini-games, two each, in the annual Jamboree. We were there for the opener between Sealth and Monroe; the Seahawks are playing again in the finale at 6:30.
Between now and then, the schedule includes our area’s two other high schools – West Seattle HS playing at 2:30 and 3 pm, Seattle Lutheran HS playing at 3:30 and 4. Junior-varsity teams are playing in the adjacent Denny International Middle School gym until 5 pm (here’s that schedule). Entry for both is through the Sealth galleria only, not the usual gym entrance; admission is $6 adults, $4 students. This is the 18th year that Chief Sealth has hosted the preseason jamboree; the boys’ team opens the season at home next Tuesday (November 27th). More jamboree coverage to come!
4:09 PM: We went back to catch the other two local teams:

P.S. WSHS’s season starts Monday at Union; the first game on SLHS’s calendar is next Saturday, December 1st, at Cascade Christian.
The report and photos are from West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) co-proprietor Tim McConnell, as WSR’s annual Thanksgiving Day Gobble Gobble Group Run and food drive started the holiday along Alki Beach:
Thanks to all who came out to support us and the West Seattle Food Bank!
We had a great turnout for our 8th annual Thanksgiving group run.
Perfect running/ walking weather, lots of smiling faces, a few furry friends, and the West Seattle Road Runners youth cross country/track team, who also helped us load up all the canned food donations brought by the participants.
West Seattle Runner’s other holiday-season events include co-presenting Track Friday tomorrow morning (details are in our preview) and the Christmas Light Run on December 16th (here’s our calendar listing); you’ll find both in our West Seattle Holiday Guide too. WSR is an independent local retailer – 2743 California SW – one of the great places where you can shop local this season, not just Black Friday or Small Biz Saturday, but every day!
A celebration at West Seattle High School tonight as another of its senior basketball stars signed a letter of intent for college – Abdullahi Mohamed is going to Eastern Washington University. Teammates and other schoolmates watched and applauded the brief ceremony, as did the player’s family.
Abdullahi thanked everyone for their support:
His mom Burhan Farah also expressed gratitude, and pride:
Abdullahi and his teammates, with head coach Keffrey Fazio (below left with Abdullahi and his mom), will hit the court next weekend in a preseason jamboree at Chief Sealth International High School.
The Wildcats’ first home game is Saturday, November 30th, vs. Ballard.
Two members of the West Seattle High School girls’ basketball team that took third place at this year’s state championships have signed letters of intent.
Kelsey Lenzie (above) plans to attend the University of Portland; Grace Sarver (below), Washington State University.
The photos are courtesy of Tami Lenzie, who says Kelsey and Grace have played basketball together since they were 6 years old! Both are seniors, so they have one more season together – starting two weeks from tonight.
Thanks to James Ross for sending the report and photo!
Congratulations to the West Seattle Raging Bulls boys soccer team for winning the South Sound United League (SSUL) U12 group to advance to the quarter-finals of the Washington State Youth Soccer Recreational Cup! The Raging Bulls outmatched five of the best clubs from South King and Pierce counties and now will represent the South Puget Sound district (District 3) for the State title.
The Raging Bulls held on in a thrilling match against another team competing in the West Seattle Soccer Club, the West Seattle Spurs. I believe the WS Spurs also advance to the State tournament, which is a true testament to the outstanding local talent and coaches we are lucky to have in WSSC!!
The WYSA Recreational Cup State Tournament championship weekend will be held December 1-2 at Starfire Sports in Tukwila. We are very proud of our team and look forward to bringing the State title back to West Seattle!
P.S. – This is the second team Coach Eric has brought to the Recreational Cup. His WS Red Bulls team (featuring two older brothers of players on his current team) won the State Championship in 2015!

Congratulations to the West Seattle High School girls’ soccer team on a great season, heading to the state 3A championships for the first time, in head coach Todd Veenhuizen‘s second season. Tonight they faced the tournament’s #1 seed, Gig Harbor, and lost 3-1. The Wildcats’ Juliet Anawalt scored the WSHS goal, according to The News-Tribune‘s game report. West Seattle wraps the season with a record of 12-3-1.
We photographed the West Seattle High School girls’ soccer team at Hiawatha tonight right after a practice session with more at stake than usual – tomorrow (Tuesday), they travel south to face Gig Harbor High School in the opening round of the state 3A tournament! Team captains Emma Foulk and Ally Veenhuizen talked with WSB’s Patrick Sand:
If you can get to Gig Harbor, the team could use all the cheering they can get as they face the tournament’s #1 seed. Game time for head coach Todd Veenhuizen‘s Wildcats is 7 pm at Roy Anderson Field, 14105 Purdy Dr. NW in Gig Harbor (map).
One more season-finale score to report this weekend: Chief Sealth International High School played at Ingraham on Friday night and came back from a halftime deficit to beat the Rams 43-33. Head coach Ted Rodriguez‘s Seahawks end the season at 7-3.
The West Seattle High School Wildcats‘ 2018 varsity-football season ended with a game against Sammamish last night at Southwest Athletic Complex. WSHS won, 31-21. That was the third win of the first season for new head coach Jeff Scott.
The report and photos are from West Seattle High School golf head coach Joel Snoow:
Congratulations to West Seattle High School Boys Golf Team on a Great 2018 Season!
The West Seattle High School Boys’ Team finished the regular season at 6-4. Our record does not reflect just how competitive this year’s team has been, as 3 of our losses were by a total of 5 strokes. We had 6 players qualify for postseason play, which made the team eligible to compete for the Metro League Team Title.
The Metro League Tournament was held at Jackson Park GC on Tuesday 10/16 and West Seattle GC on Thursday 10/18. On Tuesday the boys played well, which put the team into a great position going into Day 2 at West Seattle GC our home course. On Thursday we carried the momentum from Day 1 and had 3 players shoot their personal bests for a high-school match. These great scores added to the other player scores put us into 7th place, with the top 8 teams qualifying to move on to the District Championship.
The District Championship was held on Tuesday 10/23 at Riverbend GC in Kent. Participating in the District Championship and playing against some of the best golfers in our State was a great experience for the boys. Unfortunately some shots didn’t go our way and we missed out on the opportunity to move on as a team to the State Tournament. However, we did have one player qualify for the State Tournament as an individual and that is senior and team captain Cameron Smith. This is the second trip to the State Tournament for Cameron and he played great golf during the District Championship and finished with a score of 77:
We had a great turnout for the boys’ team in 2018, which allowed us to have a JV team. This is a young, up-and-coming group of golfers and we are really excited about their future.
As a group, the Boys and Girls Teams had a great season and created an amazing team atmosphere, supporting each other during every match, especially at each other’s Metro League Tournaments.

9:42 PM: West Seattle High School‘s girls-soccer team is going to the state tournament! Tonight at Southwest Athletic Complex, the Wildcats defeated Holy Names 2-1 in double overtime, taking third place in the Metro League. Midway through, the match was 0-0; West Seattle’s Lilli Bedell scored their first goal at 61 minutes.
Then Holy Names tied it, and it was on to two overtimes until Wildcat Juliet Anawalt‘s goal won the match.
10:35 PM: Photos added. This is head coach Todd Veenhuizen‘s second year with the WSHS girls. State tournament play starts November 5th.
Also in high-school sports tonight: The West Seattle High School girls played Seattle Prep in the Metro League soccer tournament semifinals. Prep won 5-0; the brackets indicate WSHS will playsHoly Names for third place, 7 pm Tuesday (October 30) at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle).
On this rainy night in the shadow of the Space Needle, Chief Sealth International High School‘s varsity-football win streak ended at six games. Their rematch with Roosevelt High School at Memorial Stadium downtown tonight did not go the way last week’s Southwest Athletic Complex game against the Rough Riders went; final score was Roosevelt 42, Chief Sealth 25.
ADDED SUNDAY: Photos and toplines. The TDs were all by #8 Dontae McMillan:
The ball turned over three times in first three minutes of the game. But both teams settled down a bit and McMillan’s first big TD run came at 6:36 to go in the first quarter. Roosevelt answered four minutes later; McMillan’s second TD was with less than a minute to go in the first, which ended with Sealth ahead 12-7. But that was the last time Sealth held the lead.
Head coach Ted Rodriguez‘s team couldn’t stop Roosevelt from adding two TDs before halftime, but did add another of their own, so it was 21-18 Roosevelt at the half.
The Seahawks had to go without McMillan twice in the second half; both times, though, while he limped off the field, he was back in before long. Roosevelt, however, began to pull away, and had a 42-18 lead before McMillan got one last TD at 1:32 to go in the game, which concluded 42-25.
(Dates updated)
The regular season is over and now we know what’s next on the football schedule for Chief Sealth International High School and West Seattle High School. The Seahawks, who finished atop the Metro League‘s Sound Division, have a rematch with Roosevelt, who they beat 42-37 last Friday. The two will play at Memorial Stadium downtown at 5:45 pm this Saturday (October 27). The Wildcats, meantime, have a 7 pm game Thursday (October 25) at Thomas Jefferson in Federal Way.
Two updates this afternoon on West Seattle High School golf star Lauryn Nguyen:
First, her WS Golf Course record has been confirmed. It was mentioned in this report on the WSHS girls-golf season that she was believed to have set it during the Metro Championships last week – and today, WSHS says it’s official – at 67, 5 under par, she holds the course’s women’s record.
Second, she is the third local high-school athlete in three weeks to be honored as a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Athlete of the Week! WIAA noted in today’s announcement, “Nguyen was the Metro League Golf Championship Individual Champion with her score of 67, setting a new ladies’ course record by two strokes. She also was named Metro League Player of the Year.”
9:29 PM: The game’s over at Southwest Athletic Complex, where Chief Sealth International High School has just completed its fifth consecutive victory, 47-16 over Sammamish HS. The Seahawks (5-2) held the winless Totems scoreless until the final quarter was just past half over. Photos and details to come.
11:49 PM: This one was a rollercoaster. Nobody scored in the first quarter. Plenty of time to appreciate the cheer squads, both sporting pink pom-poms for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Then Sealth started lighting up the scoreboard just a half-minute into the second quarter. The McMillan twins – #8 Dontae (WIAA’s Player of the Week) and #6 Jalonie – had plenty of reasons for celebrating.
Though Sammamish got within striking distance toward the end of the first half, they were denied, thanks to work by Seahawks including #4 Quinn Killham:
Sealth’s second TD came in the first half’s final seconds, and they led 12-0 at halftime. The third quarter was scoreless until Dontae McMillan’s TD run with 2:46 left. Two minutes later, it was 26-0, and a fumble recovery with seconds remaining in the quarter led to a 33-0 score going into the fourth quarter.
Four minutes after head coach Ted Rodriguez‘s Seahawks added yet another TD with 9:31 left in the game, Sammamish finally started a bit of a comeback. A TD run at 5:31 was followed by one at :42 – but that was too little, too late – especially with one more Sealth touchdown at :12 remaining. Final score 47-16, and with Roosevelt – next week’s opponent, 7 pm Friday at SWAC – losing to Lakeside tonight, Sealth is alone atop the division.
P.S. Home game means another Wyatt’s Jewelers (WSB sponsor) donation to a Sealth club:”
The Chief Sealth Marching Band received this game’s $100 donation – from left is director Zachariah MacIntyre, with Stacy Stepper and Kameron Port.
4:24 PM: A power problem at West Seattle Stadium means the football game that was scheduled there tonight, O’Dea‘s homecoming vs. Rainier Beach, is moving. The 7 pm game instead will be played at RB’s field. City Light’s map shows only the stadium affected by this outage; we’re checking to see what happened.
5:31 PM: An SCL truck was in view at the stadium when we went by. Cause is still listed as “investigating.”
The photos and report are from West Seattle High School golf head coach Joel Snow:
Congratulations to the West Seattle High School Girls Golf Team on a very successful 2018 season!
The lady Wildcats Golf Team finished the regular season at 8-2, which is a tie for 3rd place. This a an amazing group of girls that played great golf all season long.
The Metro League Championship Tournament was held this week on Tuesday 10/9/18 and Thursday 10/11/18. Day 1 was at Jackson Golf Course and Day 2 was at West Seattle Golf Course. The team had 5 girls qualify for the Metro League Tournament.
The team finished in 5th place and qualified for the District Championships that will be held in May 2019.
Sophomore Lauryn Nguyen won the Individual Title at the Metro League Tournament with a total score of 139 and may have set a new course record at the West Seattle Golf Course.
This is still being confirmed but the current course record for Women (5535) at the West Seattle Golf Course is 69 and on Day 2 of the tournament Lauryn shot a 5 under 67 to win the league title by 5 strokes.
The Girls finished the season on a high note and are really looking to forward to competing at the District Championships.
We are looking for more girls to come join the golf team next season. For more information, please contact head coach Joel Snow at wshsgolfteam@outlook.com.
(WSB photo: #8 Dontae McMillan in last month’s Huling Bowl win over WSHS)
Congratulations to Chief Sealth International High School football standout Dontae McMillan, announced today as a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Player of the Week. He’s led the Seahawks to four consecutive wins. From the WIAA announcement: “The running back ran for 279 yards on 21 carries and scored four touchdowns, as the Seahawks took down Lakeside 48-31. His longest run of the night was a 94-yard scramble on third down.” Every week, the organization honors “varsity athletes who exhibited an outstanding performance for the previous week (based off nominations).” This Friday night at 7 pm, you can see McMillan and his teammates play Sammamish at home at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle).
Football might be on your mind right now … but basketball season starts its full-court press soon, and that goes for the youngest players among us too! The West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) wants to remind families that signups have started:
Hit the hardwood with the experts in youth basketball. Kids learn the basics of the game plus teamwork, leadership and make new friends! Registration is open now through November 11 for ages 3 – 15 at the West Seattle & Fauntleroy YMCA. Learn more and sign up (by going here).
The West Seattle Y is at 3622 SW Snoqualmie; the Fauntleroy Y is at 9140 California SW.
One more local football game report – Seattle Lutheran hosted Evergreen Lutheran at West Seattle Stadium this afternoon. The visitors went home with the win, 50-18, but the Saints scored three TDs – two by #7 Zach Carver:
And one by #75 Andrew Meyer:
The Saints are back home at WS Stadium in two weeks for homecoming, 1 pm October 20th vs. Tacoma Baptist.
West Seattle High School #80 Tom Nguyen‘s opening performances represented one of two highlights from the Wildcats’ home game against Ingraham last night. He got WSHS out to a 14-0 start over the Rams with two touchdowns in the first few minutes of the game – first a massive run shortly after the opening kickoff, second on a pass from #2 Cyrus Storlie with 7:15 to go in the first quarter. Unfortunately, that’s all the scoring the Wildcats mustered, and though the defense held Ingraham scoreless until 3:59 remained in the first half, the Rams made up for that and went home with a 28-14 win. However, the other bright spot: Festivities for WSHS Senior Night! Players, cheer squad members, and band musicians in the Class of 2019 were honored at halftime, since this was the last regular-season home game:
From the announcements read during the ceremony, the seniors honored were:
CHEER: Captains Nina Betancourt, Christina Carpio, Sophia Singer; team manager Deniece Savage; team members Erin Conroy, Rowan Langaynor, Sara Mendez, Chloe Simmons, Kourtnie Snow, Cicely Spicer, Tatjana Steinhuber, Jake Webley.
BAND: Musicians Lola Demurger, Carli Evanson, Emma Laplante, Matthew Mote, Katya Rose, Megan Tran.
FOOTBALL: Managers Deja Lewis, Sadie Marchant, Alex Reboca, Taija Young; players Ayden Al-Shimary, Lucas Bower, Oliver Carlson, Samuel Jett Centioli, Ben Fryer, Ian Gesellchen, Mighty Gionet, Ryan Higgins, Naum Hoffman, Cameron John, Colin Roman, Cyrus Storlie, Victor Yeasting.
