West Seattle, Washington

Thanks to proud mom Maija Wade for the photo and report on her son’s achievement:
Today at the BRI Seafair Triathlon Kids Long Course, 10 year old Marshall Wade of Gatewood Elementary School won 1st place in his age group, 1st among all male youth participants, and 3rd place overall.
The Kids Long Course includes a 100-yard swim, 2-mile bike ride, and 1-mile run.
This is Marshall’s second Seafair Triathlon and his first podium finish. After the event, Marshall said, “It was very fun and my goal is to have fun! … We as kids can do this!”
The event was held at Seward Park.

7:18 PM: Thanks again to Cami MacNamara for another report from Sedro-Woolley, where the West Seattle Little League All-Star 12s scored another big state-tournament win today, this time against Walla Walla, with the game called at 14-0 in the fifth inning. As shown on the official bracket, their next game is Tuesday, 4 pm vs. Sammamish.
9:22 PM: Thanks to Barry J. White for sending photos and a summary:
Miles Gosztola pitched three dominant innings, allowing no hits while striking out seven.
Robbie Foisy relieved him and pitched two hitless innings and striking out three.
Matthew Henning smacked a three-run homer as part of a six-run third inning that broke the game open. As they have throughout this run, the team helped itself with aggressive baserunning and sharp defense.
Jake Webster, one of two captains of the Chief Sealth International High School boys’ soccer teams, is inviting younger players to a camp coming up July 30th-August 2nd, 9 am-2 pm each day:
This soccer camp is for children going into 3rd-9th grade and is great for a player of any skill level. The camp focuses on skill development, teamwork and leadership, as well as life values and traits. The Chief Sealth soccer camp is led by past and present players of both the boys’ and girls’ programs at Sealth and is a great opportunity for students segueing into Sealth to meet and bond with players and coaching staff at the varsity level. For the four days, the cost per child is $100 and includes a T-Shirt at the end of the camp.

10:22 PM: Thanks to Cami MacNamara for the photo and report from tonight’s championship game in the West Seattle Little League-hosted District 7 11/12 tournament at Bar-S: WSLL came from behind for the second game in a row and won the title, 6-5! They were down 5-3 but won the game with a big comeback inthe bottom of the sixth inning. Next up, the state tournament in Sedro-Woolley. The champs play the host team there, District 11, at noon on Saturday, July 21st.
10:52 PM: Added, a photo sent by Porter Hammer:
Porter explains that’s WSLL’s Bobby Trigg, “after hitting a triple, driving in 2 RBIs that tied the game in the bottom of the 6th (last) inning; then he came into score on a hit by the next batter to win the game.”
With a come-from-behind win at Bar-S Playfield tonight, the West Seattle Little League 11/12 All-Star team has made it into the championship game of the District 7 tournament. They were trailing 1-0 late in the game when Matthew Henning (seen below in an earlier at-bat) slugged a 2-run homer.
You’re invited to help pack the stands Thursday night at 6 when the WSLL team goes for the district title. (Bar-S is at 64th SW and SW Admiral Way.)

Just in from Bar-S – the West Seattle Little League 11/12 All-Stars win again! We stopped by for a few photos during this morning’s District 7 tournament game vs. Rainier.
Thanks to Cami MacNamara for sending the final score – 20-0, in four innings. WSLL plays again Tuesday at 6 pm. But there’s more baseball to come today – two other teams play at noon – as the tournament field continues narrowing .
You can see the brackets here. The championship game will be at 6 pm Thursday.

After six years of serving as an opening act for the West Seattle Grand Parade, the Float Dodger 5K run/walk on the parade route is taking a break this year. After a tip from Marion, we went over to West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor), organizers of the Float Dodger 5K. Tim McConnell told us a variety of factors led to the decision to skip this year – including a late start to fundraising – which is a vital component, given permit fees and other costs – plus other business/family projects. But as you’ll see on the Float Dodger website, they’re organizing a casual run pre-parade: “Please join West Seattle Runner for a casual group run the morning of the parade on July 21 at 9:30 am to run the parade route and watch the parade from the store afterward.” And they’re hoping to bring back the Float Dodger 5K in 2019.
Two announcements today from West Seattle Little League:
ALL-STAR TOURNAMENT STARTS SATURDAY: Bar-S Playfield will host the 12-year-olds’ All-Star Tournament, starting with WSLL’s game at 9 am Saturday. WSLL’s Kathy Powers adds, “Our own WSLL team won the State Championship last year so we are excited to kick off this tournament and host!” You’ll find the brackets on the WSLL website.
BATTING CAGE IMPROVEMENT: Just happened last week!
Richie Wallace, former ball player at WSLL [in photo with WSLL VP David Sazama], improved our batting cage last week for his Boy Scouts Eagle Project! The new cage not only looks great, but is now usable year around with a proper pitching mound and new sport turf that took care of previous drainage issues.
Thank you, Richie Wallace and Troop 274 of the BSA Mount Tahoma District.
Bar-S, home of WSLL, is at 6425 SW Admiral Way.
Thanks to Kathy Powers from West Seattle Little League for the photo and report:
Congrats to West Seattle Little League’s 11-Year-Old All-Star Team, who clinched the District 7 Championship today.

(Photo of Miss HomeStreet, tweeted by @homestreetbank last weekend)
West Seattle’s HomeStreet Bank (4022 SW Alaska; WSB sponsor) will host its namesake hydroplane, Miss HomeStreet, this Thursday (June 28th), and you’re invited to stop by and see it 3-5 pm. This isn’t just any hydroplane – the Miss HomeStreet team won the national championship again last year, and took second place in this year’s first race, in Alabama just last weekend. The Miss HomeStreet’s season will of course include Seafair, first weekend in August.
Thanks to Leslie Harris (your rep on the Seattle Public Schools Board as well as its president) for the photo from the Chief Sealth International High School football team’s fundraising pancake breakfast. $5, all-you-can-eat, in the Sealth/Denny galleria until noon.
School’s out for summer – but fall is right around the corner. Among those very aware of that – those involved with fall sports! Like the Chief Sealth International High School football team, which is raising money for new headsets, dummies, and sleds. As part of that, they’re serving all-you-can-eat pancakes for $5 tomorrow morning, 10 am-noon (Saturday, June 23rd), in the Denny International Middle School Galleria (2601 SW Kenyon, adjacent to Sealth). Just show up – tickets will be available at the door! (Thanks to Jeanette for the tip.)
Two things the West Seattle Soccer Club wants to make sure you know – sent by Tim McMonigle:
With almost a thousand players already registered, we are rapidly coming to the end of our open registration period for the West Seattle Soccer Club 2018 fall season. After July 1, players will only be placed if there is room available on a team. The club exists for players from 5-18 years old, so please register before the deadline.
Play begins right after Labor Day, and will end before Thanksgiving for most ages. The older teams may have some games into early December. Hopefully the World Cup will motivate the players to get out on the pitch to show their stuff.
Also, this is WSSC’s 50th Anniversary, having started in our community in 1968. We are planning a celebration for (new date) September 8th, and hopefully will have some of our founders and early soccer participants available to share stories, along with a lot of food and fun events. If you were part of the WSSC in the late ’60s/early ’70s, please contact us at wsscboard@gmail.com. We’d love to see some old team photos and stories of the early years of our program.
Last week, we reported that West Seattle High School was looking for a new head football coach after Marcis Fennell‘s resignation. Today, there’s word a new coach is on board and inviting prospective players to a meet-and-greet pizza party tomorrow:
“The WSHS team is extending an open invitation to a Pizza Party Meet & Greet with the awesome new head football coach, Jeff Scott, and his coaching staff. Any potential football players are invited to come and learn more about the team. Incoming Freshmen as well as any upperclassmen are welcome! If you know a student who loves football but is unsure about their experience or ability, or the practice schedule, come have some pizza with the team and check it out. The Wildcats have only had a few practices so far in spring training so it’s not too late to suit up and be a part of the action. Join us Friday afternoon at 4 pm at the Hiawatha football field, adjacent to the high school.

Tomorrow’s the last day of school in Seattle Public Schools – if you’re still finalizing summer plans, this invitation from West Seattle High School‘s new volleyball coach Abby West might be of interest:
The West Seattle High School Volleyball Team is hosting its first annual Wildcat Volleyball Mini-Camp for rising 5th-8th graders. It will be in the West Seattle High School gymnasium July 25th, 26th, and 27th from 9:00 am-12:00 pm. The camp is designed to introduce and improve team and individual skills for young people of all skill levels. We facilitate a safe and fun environment to help campers make friends, enjoy their time with us, and learn about the sport! All genders are welcome! As families continue planning the summer, the SWAC Cougars youth football and cheer program has opened registration. Gary shared the announcement:

We provide a safe structured and positive environment that stresses dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship, which teaches as much about life as it does football and cheer.

1:28 PM: West Seattle High School principal Brian Vance says the school has accepted the resignation of Marcis Fennell after his first year as head football coach. Fennell sent WSB a copy of his resignation letter; you can read it here (PDF). He cites “many reasons” for leaving, including “unwarranted resistance” to his “attempt to change the culture of the program.” Vance says school administration is sending a letter to program families this afternoon, and that the school will launch a search for a new head coach, though it’s a lot later in the year than the traditional time for such searches. Fennell went winless during his year of coaching the Wildcats; in his resignation letter, he says that he inherited only “1 returning varsity player with significant playing time from the season prior.” His hiring was announced in March 2017.
ADDED 2:56 PM: WSHS athletic director Corey Sorenson has just sent us the aforementioned letter that’s gone out to families; read it here (PDF). In part, Sorenson writes, “I would like to thank Coach Fennell for the endless amount of time and energy he invested into our student athletes at West Seattle High School. During Coach Fennell’s time as Head Coach at West Seattle High School, our school has seen increases in the number of two-sport athletes, overall team GPA and community outreach from within our football program. I want to assure all the families and athletes that moving forward we will be having a football program next fall at West Seattle High School.” He also told families that while WSHS searches for a new head coach, assistant athletic director Jeremy Marzofka “will be running team activities and workouts.”

We have updates on the three West Seattle rowers featured here early Sunday for making it to the national championships – but first, we’ve also received a report on a fourth! From Regina Arceo-Schulz:
Reece Schulz (above right), born and raised in West Seattle, did something that not too many people can say they did, he won the Lightweight Junior Men’s 2x three years in a row at the 2018 US Youth National Rowing Championship. He and this year’s partner, Ruben Luthra, finished the 2000 meters in 7:00.669 at Lake Natoma, CA. They were first in time trials and semi-finals over the three-day regatta.
Reece won last year with Cole Graham at Sarasota, Florida and 2016 with Nick Angelillo at Mercer Lake, New Jersey. A little side note, Reece’s older brothers Spencer Schulz and James Teodoro (JT) Schulz had won the same trophy in 2014. Reece and Ruben row at Seattle Rowing Center and thank their coaches, Conal Groom and Derek Deleuw, for all the hard training and support.
Kathy Lower also updated us on Reed Lower, a West Seattle High School senior who rows for Mount Baker:
His team got 16th in the nation for the Men’s Varsity 4+.
And Steve Cameron updated us on the two Fauntleroy residents he had e-mailed about over the weekend – Chief Sealth International High School senior Mackenna Cameron’s Green Lake Crew 8 seat team “made the Grand Final and came in 5th in the nation,” while Rohin Petram, a Vashon HS student, “finished 12th in his single and is only a Junior with another year to make it to the top.”
