Juanita came back a couple of innings later to open up a lead. West Seattle came back and the game was tied 4-4 going into the 7th. A two-out rally got Juanita the win and the district’s fifth and final spot in the state tournament.

SPORTS: Chief Sealth International High School athletes’ success at Metro track and field championships

The report is from Chief Sealth International High School track and field coach Lorna Considine, forwarded by Nicole Sipila of the Sealth PTSA:

In the history of Chief Sealth Athletics there has been no one that has achieved what ELIJAH JACKSON did last Friday.

He became the 2018 METRO CHAMPION in the LONG JUMP 22’8”, TRIPLE JUMP 44’5”, and HIGH JUMP 6’4”. He is also the anchor leg of the MENS 4X100 RELAY who came in 4th and will advance to the District Meet. We are very proud of what he’s accomplished and look forward to seeing him succeed on his journey back to the STATE TRACK MEET next weekend. Good luck!!!!!

Also join me in congratulating the following student athletes who’ve advanced to the 2018 District Track Meet this Wednesday and Friday: EVE ELMORE, JASMINE SMITH, CHLOE MYERS, QUINN WILEY, SADIQUE CALLOWAY, DONNIE MCMILLAN, DIEGO JACKSON, and BRANDYN GIBSON! Good Luck, Seahawks!

It’s a run/walk for the whole family – and it’s now less than one week away. Sunday (May 20th) brings the first big 5K of the season to our area, the West Seattle 5K, raising money for the West Seattle High School PTSA. Even if you’re not participating, you need to know that the WS5K takes over the waterfront road for a few hours on Sunday morning, so heed those no-parking signs! So you might as well join in. The run/walk starts just after 9 am, leaving from and returning to 61st/Alki, just west of the Bathhouse. If you’re not already signed up, you can still register online – go here. Strollers and leashed dogs welcome! (WSB is a co-sponsor again this year, as we’ve been every year since the WS5K launched in 2009.)

SPORTS: West Seattle High School athletes’ success at Metro track and field championships

Thanks to West Seattle High School head track and field coach Will Harrison for the report:

West Seattle Boys 4th, Girls 10th among 16 Seattle Metro League Schools

It was a great showing for West Seattle HS athletes at the Seattle Metro League Championships at Southwest Athletic Complex, May 9th and 11th. The boys’ team compiled 51 points to tie defending champs O’Dea for 4th; the girls earned 34 points for 10th. Photos courtesy of Erik Bell.

The boys’ team was led by:
-Senior Cass Elliott defending his 300 hurdles title, winning in 37.76 seconds. He also placed 3rd in the 200m dash in 22.81 to score 16 points total.

(Elliott holds the state No. 1 mark this season in the 300m hurdles)

-Junior Rylee Farrison came up 3rd in the boys 400m in 51.28 and 4th in the 200m in 23.21 and to grab 11 points. Elliott and Farrison capped off the meet teaming with Seniors Jackson Delaney and Alec Maroon to place 3rd (worth 6 points) in a thrilling 4x400m relay in 3 minutes 27.6 seconds, dangerously close to the school record of 3:27.41 seconds from 2016 (Elliott and Farrison were on that team as well).

(Rylee Farrison)

-Senior Joe Kirk-Woodbury went out with a fantastic senior Metro performance, achieving personal bests for 2nd place in the discus throw (149 feet, 7 inches) and 4th in the shot put in (47 feet, 1.5 inches) to score 13 points. With two weeks left in the season, the discus school record of 150 feet, 6 inches (Jay Morgan in 2003) could be in jeopardy.

(Senior Joe-Kirk Woodbury was Metro Runner-Up in the discus throw Friday)

-The boys 4 x 100m relay team of seniors Abdifatah Jeylani and Lucas Bower and sophomores Tom Nguyen and Kahlel Kelley placed 5th in the 4×100 meter relay (44.63) to score 4 points. Jeylani also placed 8th in the 100m dash for an additional point.

Girls’ team highlights included:
-Junior Chloe Cunliffe defended her pole vault title by going 13 feet even. She also placed 6th in the long jump in 16 feet, 5.25 inches to score 13 points altogether.

(Cunliffe has the top mark in Washington this season)

-Senior Symmone Davis had a breakout meet which saw her advance to districts in 4 events (top 8 in Metro advance to that meet, next Wednesday/Friday at SWAC). She placed 2nd in the 100m hurdles (16.19), and 7th in the 300 hurdles finals in 50.53. seconds – though the big breakthrough came in the prelims for that race, in which she earned the 2nd overall time with a 47.73, an oh-so-close .03 seconds off Grace Sarver’s record from 2017. Davis’ efforts added 10 points for those events.

(Davis advanced to district in 2 individual events and helped 2 relays advance)

-She also helped 2 relays advance – the 4x200m relay of Davis, sophomore Madison Kipley, senior Sierrah Bettin, and sophomore Katherine Long placed 5th in a season-best 1:48.54 (4 points); the 4x 100m of Davis, C. Cunliffe, Bettin, and sophomore Marissa Rackner placed 4th (5 points) in 51.36 seconds.

(Sophomore Madison Kipley was a key member of 2 relays)

-Sophomore Sophia Cunliffe placed 7th in long jump (2 points) with a leap of 16 feet, 5 inches.
-The 4x400m relay of Kipley, Bettin, freshman Evelyn Hootman, and sophomore Melody Potratz placed 9th in 4 minutes, 15.78 seconds, and sophomore Malia Proctor threw 77 feet, 4 inches, also for 9th- thus earning spots as 1st alternates for the district meet next week.

The Nathan Hale Boys won the meet with 86 point (by ½ point over Bishop Blanchet) and the Holy Names Academy girls won with 83 points (by 2 over Seattle Prep). Full results can be found here.

CONGRATULATIONS! Regional award for West Seattle High School basketball standout Meghan Fiso

SPORTS: Rambo Total Pest Control backs Little League teams in two counties – with a West Seattle backstory

If someone in your family plays Little League (or other youth sports), you know it takes a lot of support – the families, the coaches, and the sponsors. One of our sponsors, Rambo Total Pest Control, is sponsoring teams in two neighborhoods – the one down south where they’re based, and here in West Seattle, where proprietor Luke Rambo has deep roots (which is why his company does a lot of work up here, and why they advertise with us). He shared a story about his interest and involvement, and appreciation for what it takes:

This is my favorite time of year. The crack of the bat, the cheering of the fans, the smell of freshly cut grass. Baseball season is upon us, finally! Every Spring since the dawn of time (well, maybe not quite that long ago), the eternal optimism, and hope of spring bring us a new baseball season. This time of year I am reminded of my childhood glory days spent fielding, throwing, hitting, and a little bit of pitching on the Bar-S Fields, followed by ice cream at Husky Deli after each team win.

I grew up in West Seattle and played in West Seattle Little League for the Laporte Eide Indians.  Some of my best childhood memories happened in those few short formative years between 9 and 12 years old down at Bar-S Field.  Our coach was a young up and comer named Vince Ormiston.  Some of the guys I played with were Sean and Ryan Wooten, Scott Olsen, Brian Pena, Andy Coghill, Jarrett Trail, and quite a few others, some of whom I went on to play ball with at West Seattle High School.  We shared some great times there at Bar S and I know the same is true for many others.

In my early 20’s I moved with my wife to Puyallup, and we now have an 11 year old son and an 8
year old daughter.  Our son plays for South Hill Little League (majors) White Sox, and I get to
be one of the coaches on his team.  This is another special group of young men, working hard to
play well, have fun, and develop their own passion for the game of Baseball.  It is a pleasure
working with these players, our coaches, and the parents.

With my increased involvement in Little League these past few seasons, I came to realize how much effort goes into keeping these organizations alive.  From the many decisions and strategy sessions run by the Board for each local league, to the late nights setting lineups by the coaches, to the team moms busily collecting donations for raffle items at the league fundraisers, to all the thousands of parents, siblings, grandparents, and neighbors who support these players in their development.  The moving parts that keep these leagues together are amazing to watch!

Considering everything I have gained personally from my own involvement in Little League, as well as that of my family and friends, we decided to have our company Rambo Total Pest Control become an official sponsor of West Seattle Little League and South Hill Little League.

We hope to give back and help out in a small way to keep the spirit of Little League alive and well for the next generation.  Our sponsorship will help contribute to things like field
maintenance, uniforms, equipment, and baseballs.  Look for our banners at Bar-S Field by Alki – photo above – and the Fruitland Grange in South Hill this season and seasons to come! Thank you to the many volunteers who keep these leagues running!

Respectfully, Luke Rambo

And if you need pest-control services, you can reach them at 866-540-RAMBO7262), or RamboPest.com. (Disclosure – besides being a longtime WSB sponsor, Rambo is also our pest-control provider … they’ve helped us keep away those pesky little ants in recent years.)

PLAY BALL! Champions League invites special-needs players to join

One more youth-sports league is registering players right now! Michelle Riggen-Ransom sends news of the Champions League:

Champions Baseball League invites players with special needs to come and play baseball in a fun, supportive team environment! Sign-ups are open for the upcoming Spring season, and all the details are on the website. There’s no charge for players to join, and players even get free team hats and shirts.

At a high level:

– Participants can be any gender and between the ages of 4 and 23 years-old, or those who remain in a school setting, with special needs that would prevent them from playing in a traditional baseball or softball program.

– The season will be Sundays for three weeks starting with a skill-building and introduction to the game on May 20th at 1 pm. We will then play games for two weeks starting June 3rd. All events will be at our Pee Wee fields in West Seattle.

– No previous baseball experience needed! Players can do t-ball or coach pitch, and have a buddy from one of the West Seattle teams work with them if they want or need it. Open to anyone in the Seattle area, not just West Seattle.

It’s so much fun; last year so many people in the community showed up on Sundays to support the team, cheer on the players, BBQ, and just generally have a good time together.

Here’s the official sign-up form and info: http://westseattlebaseball.website.siplay.com/champions

Still have questions? Send them to Michelle Riggen-Ransom, mriggen@gmail.com. Let’s…PLAY BALL!!

BASEBALL: Second postseason win for West Seattle High School

(Sophomore second baseman Jackson Sullivan made a spectacular play to end an inning)

Another postseason win for the Wildcats – thanks to Porter Hammer for the photos and report on last night’s game:

The West Seattle High School baseball team defeated Ingraham High School at Steve Cox Field in White Center Monday night, 2-0 in a loser-go-home playoff game. West Seattle (5-10 in the regular season) were the underdogs versus Ingraham (12-3 in regular season), but they did not play like it.

Pacific College-bound senior Anthony Coats (above) pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out 5 Ingraham batters while only walking 1.

RBIs by junior Ruben Gut and senior Nathan Villegas represented the winning runs. Gut had 2 hits on the day, and sophomore catcher Ulysses Hammer hit a double.

West Seattle now moves on to play Garfield HS tomorrow (Wednesday, May 2nd), again at 7 pm at Cox (1321 SW 102nd). After surviving two games of single elimination play, West Seattle is now in a double-elimination situation in the Metro League playoffs.

12:06 PM: The rain lifted (mostly) just in time for this morning’s postseason rematch between West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School at Southwest Athletic Complex. The Wildcats won, 4-1, and will play Ingraham HS next, 7 pm Monday at Steve Cox Memorial Park in White Center. Photos to come!

ADDED 8:14 PM: A few game highlights, with help from WSHS parent Porter Hammer, who shared the next photo of Wildcat junior pitcher Ruben Gut, who threw a complete game – 71 pitches in 7 innings – and sophomore catcher Ulysses Hammer:

Gut also had 4 strikeouts and gave up only one run, a homer by Chief Sealth sophomore Nestor German in the top of the seventh. He and Hammer each accounted for one of West Seattle’s RBIs, with Nathan Villegas getting the other two. Another play of note in the game, Wildcat Kai Osaka scoring on a passed ball by Sealth catcher Jess Brown:

This was the final game of the year for Sealth head coach Ernest Policarpio and team.

The next game for first-year West Seattle head coach Bryan Tupper and team is another win-or-go-home.

Next stop for the West Seattle High School varsity baseball team: Postseason! Thanks to Porter Hammer for the report and photos on the regular-season finale Monday at Hiawatha:

The West Seattle High School baseball team finished the regular season strong with a 10-9 victory over a tough Bishop Blanchet team.

(Senior players from left to right, with Head Coach Bryan Tupper: Nathan Villegas, Alex Pastrana, Kit Lui, Coach Tupper, Anthony Coates, Jordan Berridge, Jaquan Buchanan, Leland Gropper)

This was the final regular season game for 7 West Seattle High seniors, and they were honored at the end of the game with their families.

Senior player Kit Lui (above) got the start on the mound, and went 4 strong innings.

Junior Matt Morin came in for 1.1 innings of great relief, and Junior Ruben Gut (above) pitched 1.2 innings and sealed the victory with a strikeout to end the game.

Junior Kai Osaka (above) had an incredible game, going 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs. Kai had two doubles, including a bases-clearing 3 RBI double in the bottom of the 4th inning. He also initiated 2 key double plays on defense.

Jackson Sullivan, Anthony Coates, and Kit Lui all finished with 2 hits each.

It was a strong finish for first-year Head Coach Bryan Tupper‘s team, and next year is very promising as the JV team is particularly loaded with talent. They also got the win, 7-6 versus the Bishop Blanchet JV team, with freshman Nate Rasmussen pitching 6 innings.

West Seattle now moves on to the playoffs, with a loser-out game versus rival Chief Sealth International High School this Saturday at 10am at the Southwest Athletic Complex baseball field just north of Westwood Village. West Seattle versus Sealth is usually a well-attended and fierce matchup, so don’t miss it! The loser is done for the season, and the winner continues on in the playoffs. See you at the SWAC, 10 am Saturday!

SPORTS: West Seattle High School athletes’ success at nation’s biggest single-day track meet

Thanks to West Seattle High School track and field head coach Will Harrison for the report:

For West Seattle track athletes, it was another successful trip to Edgar Brown Memorial Stadium in Pasco for the nation’s largest single-day high-school track meet: the Pasco Invitational. Over 1,500 athletes from over 100 schools were represented this past Saturday, April 14th.

As they did last year, Junior Chloe Cunliffe (pole vault) and Senior Cass Elliott (300 meter hurdles) picked up big wins.

CONGRATULATIONS! Regional success for West Seattle BMX racer Colton Fukano

West Seattle’s young BMX (bicycle motocross) star Colton Fukano is on the move again. We received the photo and update this weekend from his mom Shawnda Fukano:

Colton competed in the Great Northwest Nationals BMX race in Redmond, Oregon (last) weekend. He placed 4th on Saturday and 1st on Sunday in the 6 year old intermediate class. The race brought kids together from five different states. Colton races for Sonic BMX and practices at North Seatac BMX track. A big thanks to coach Jamie Stenson and team sponsor Sprocketts Recycled Bicycles shop.

As first reported here almost two years ago, Colton has been riding since he was three, and won a championship at four!

If you had trouble getting to the second day of the 8th-anniversary party at West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) because of the unexpected “guest” out in the street – good news! That work’s done, but the party is NOT over, and you are invited to join Lori McConnell and Tim McConnell as the celebration continues tomorrow. Throughout the day, discounts continue on footwear and apparel. And you can find out what’s happening in the local running world any time you stop by – along with their own events and activities, WSR partners with the big events both in West Seattle and beyond, and supports lots of community causes. They’ll be open tomorrow until 5 pm, 2743 California SW.
