Tomorrow and Thursday, Highline Premier FC has one more round of tryouts for certain birth years. Here’s the announcement:
First round of Tryouts has concluded for the 2018/19 season. A second round of tryouts will commence on June 12 & June 14 for additional players for birth year 2007 through 2011 players & 2005 boys.
When: June 12 & 14th. Please attend both nights
Time: Based on Age Group. We will confirm field/time on Sunday via email to registrants.
Where: Chief Sealth Utility Fields or Walt Hundley based on gender/birth year(email will be sent to confirm field and time)
Existing teams may have limited spots. Email our Tryout Director at tryouts@highlinepremier.com to inquire.

The clouds and rain held off just long enough for Southwest Little League to hold its 2018 picnic and Home Run Derby at Steve Cox Memorial Park on Saturday.
While attendees began enjoying the food prepared by league board members and other volunteers, the official program began with the presentation of the league´s Coach of the Year award, which was given to third-year coach Josh Wells:
Following the coach award, trophies were awarded to the winners of the morning’ś Home Run Derby. One champion from each of the leagué’ś five competition divisions — Majors, AAA, AA, Coach Pitch, and Tee Ball — was recognized for hitting the longest fly ball in their peer group.
Majors: Grayson Leui Steele (201 feet, 6 inches)

At least three rowers from West Seattle are at the Youth National Championships this weekend in Northern California. First, Steve Cameron sent this report on two of them:
Your readers may be interested to know we have two high school athletes from West Seattle (Fauntleroy to be exact) competing at the US Rowing Youth National Championships this weekend. Rowing does not make the news too much but there are over 1,000 teens in Western WA who are rowers.
Rohin Petram is a Junior, rows for Vashon Island, and attends Vashon High School. He is a lifelong resident of WS and has grown up in the Fauntleroy neighborhood. He competed in a single this weekend and just missed the Grand final but will compete in the B Final on Sunday afternoon. He will be a Senior next year and is set to have an amazing year in 2018/2019.
Mackenna Cameron in a graduating Senior at Chief Sealth International High School. She is also born and raised in West Seattle and lives in Fauntleroy. Mackenna rows for Green Lake Crew, a Seattle Parks and Rec facility. She is in the Woman’s 8+ boat and they finished second in their Semifinal Saturday morning and at 10:30 am on Sunday morning they will row for the US Rowing Youth Women’s 8+ National Championship. There were 24 teams from across the US who earned a spot in the National Championships and it is down to six teams competing for the title tomorrow, including Green Lake Crew.
Mackenna’s Green Lake Boat has had a great year winning the Women’s Youth 8+ titles at the Husky Open in April, the Brentwood Regatta on Vancouver Island, the Eleanor McElvaine Cup at the 2018 Windermere Cup Regatta in Seattle, and in late May, they won the US Rowing Youth NW Regional Championships in Vancouver, WA to earn a spot at this weekend’s National Championships in Rancho Cordova, CA, outside of Sacramento. After this weekend, Mackenna and her teammates are headed to England to compete in three regattas, including the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames.
Mackenna will also join the University of Washington Huskies Crew in the Fall of 2018.

We also heard earlier about West Seattle High School senior Reed Lower making it to the nationals.
He rows from the Mount Baker Club house, his mom Kathy Lower explained. His boat, the Men’s V4+, was one of four from Mount Baker that qualified for nationals. Kathy says Reed “plans to row D1 at Santa Clara University.”

After five matchplay games, 10 baker games, and two days of cheering, the Greater Seattle Youth Girls Bowling All-Star team, coached by Jessica Buchanan, took first place at the Interassociation All-star Extravaganza in Longview, WA. Three-year all-star and West Seattle High School sophomore Evan Smith helped lead the girls to victory as the Greater Seattle team captain. West Seattle Bowl is her home alley (and also for returning youth all-stars Ruth Magaña and Kyle Jonson).
Evan is extremely proud and excited to bring home a big win for West Seattle Bowl and the Greater Seattle bowling association! Kenmore Lanes is where the Greater Seattle USBC Board of Directors has their home office, so the perpetual plaque will be hung there until next year’s event.

11:38 AM: Perfect day for a 5K … and an obstacle course … and a Senior Saunter … and a Youth Dash … the four events comprising the second annual Loop the ‘Lupe at Walt Hundley Playfield! More than 400 people were signed up by the time the warmups started, preceding the obstacle course. Next up, the family 5K fun run/walk at 11:45, followed by the quarter-mile seniors’ loop at 12:15, kids’ 1K at 1 pm. Even if you aren’t joining in, you’re welcome to join the party at the playfield (34th and Myrtle) – beer garden and music! Congratulations to the West Seattle High School contingent for their accomplishments at the WIAA 3A Track and Field State Championships at Mt Tahoma High School last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

On Friday, the West Seattle girls had a special day. Junior Chloe Cunliffe had 3 very special pole vault clearances: She won the meet by being the only athlete to clear 13 feet even, then set the meet record by clearing 13 feet, 4 inches- but she wasn’t done there. She went on to clear 13 feet, 8.5 inches to set the all-time Washington record. Shortly afterward, she competed in the long jump and wound up 2nd by half an inch, with a leap of 17 feet, 9.25 inches. Hannah Hicks of Edmonds-Woodway won the event at 17 feet, 9.75 inches.

Senior Symmone Davis continued to her rapid improvement streak in the 100m hurdles. She came into the meet seeded 10th and wound up 2nd with a time of 14.88 seconds. Ingraham’s Phoebe Salowey won the event with a time of 14.79 seconds. For Davis, this capped off a breakthrough season which also saw her set a school record in the 300m hurdles at the district meet.
In all, Cunliffe scored 18 points, and Davis an additional 8. Those 26 points in fact put West Seattle in first place in the team scoring going into the third and final day of the meet, and was ultimately good enough for a 7th-place finish – the top finish of any Metro League school.

On the boys’ side, Senior Cass Elliott defended his 300m hurdle title with a time of 37.68 seconds. His prelim time of 37.13 seconds was just 0.02 seconds off his own meet record from last year and the fastest time in any classification this year. It was an impressive bounce-back from a serious ankle injury he suffered in November while playing basketball, which forced him to take several months off and even miss the early weeks of the spring season. Elliott will continue his career at the University of Washington next year.

Senior Joe Kirk-Woodbury had a storybook ending to his high-school discus career. He came into the meet ranked 11th in that event (all competitors get three throws at state, and then the top 9 get three additional throws). He had been motivated all year by Jay Morgan‘s school record of 150 feet, 6 inches from 2003. He was already having a great day by making finals with the 5th best mark overall, with 5 throws in the 140’s. On his sixth throw of the meet and final throw of his high school career, he launched a throw of 152 feet, 1 inch to notch the record, as well as a 3rd place finish. Kirk-Woodbury will continue his track career at Olympic College next year.

Junior Rylee Farrison ran a time of 50.92 seconds in the prelims of the 400m dash to finish 9th overall in that event, just one place shy of making the final. Elliott, Farrison, Jackson Delaney, and Alec Maroon ran to a 6th-place finish in the 4 x 400m relay with a time of 3 minutes, 26.42 seconds to finish the meet.
All together, the boys’ team compiled 19 points to finish 12th in the team scoring – second among Metro Schools (Chief Sealth was 10th). Gig Harbor won both the boys’ and girls’ team titles. Full results can be found here.

(Congratulations to) our West Seattle High School Golfers on our successful trip to the High School State Championships in Spokane this past Tuesday & Wednesday (May 22nd & 23rd).
The boys’ tournament was held at the Creek at Qualchan, with Senior Alex Nguyen (above) and Junior Cameron Smith (below) competing for our boys’ team.
The girls’ tournament was held at Indian Canyon, with Freshman Lauryn Nguyen competing for our girls’ team, with Lauryn taking home the medal for 2nd place in the individual category. Back in March, we wrote about renovation work planned this spring/summer at Southwest Athletic Complex – and now Derek McCloud from Seattle Public Schools (which owns SWAC) sends word that work has begun:
Construction has started on the track at SWAC … most of the old track has already been torn up. It looks like the installation of the new track will begin next week! Graduation for Chief Sealth (5 PM on the 21st and West Seattle on the 21st @ 8) will still take place at the complex.. After graduation the field, will be torn up, and our hope is it will be ready by mid- to late August/early Sept for high school football practice. We would like to let the public know the field will be closed most of the summer, and to please stay out of the complex (which is locked) during the construction project!
District documents say the $1.5 million project “will include replacement of the existing synthetic turf at football, softball, and baseball fields using cork infill, refurbishing the existing rubberized running track, and associated work.”
Thursday night, three age groups wrap up the HSA Select soccer tryouts for this season. Tim McMonigle sends the reminder:

We’re in the heart of baseball season, and that goes for youth leagues too. One of the newest ones in West Seattle gets going for the year tomorrow, and Michelle Riggen-Ransom reminds you that it’s not too late to step up to the plate:
Registration is still open for the Champions Baseball League! Our first practice is this Sunday at 1 pm on the Pee Wee Fields in West Seattle. If you have a child with special needs who loves and wants to play baseball, sign up and come and join us for some fun games! The snack shack will be open, and we’d love to have fellow baseball fans come down and cheer on the team as well.

Juanita came back a couple of innings later to open up a lead. West Seattle came back and the game was tied 4-4 going into the 7th. A two-out rally got Juanita the win and the district’s fifth and final spot in the state tournament.

In the history of Chief Sealth Athletics there has been no one that has achieved what ELIJAH JACKSON did last Friday.
He became the 2018 METRO CHAMPION in the LONG JUMP 22’8”, TRIPLE JUMP 44’5”, and HIGH JUMP 6’4”. He is also the anchor leg of the MENS 4X100 RELAY who came in 4th and will advance to the District Meet. We are very proud of what he’s accomplished and look forward to seeing him succeed on his journey back to the STATE TRACK MEET next weekend. Good luck!!!!!

It’s a run/walk for the whole family – and it’s now less than one week away. Sunday (May 20th) brings the first big 5K of the season to our area, the West Seattle 5K, raising money for the West Seattle High School PTSA. Even if you’re not participating, you need to know that the WS5K takes over the waterfront road for a few hours on Sunday morning, so heed those no-parking signs! So you might as well join in. The run/walk starts just after 9 am, leaving from and returning to 61st/Alki, just west of the Bathhouse. If you’re not already signed up, you can still register online – go here. Strollers and leashed dogs welcome! (WSB is a co-sponsor again this year, as we’ve been every year since the WS5K launched in 2009.)

West Seattle Boys 4th, Girls 10th among 16 Seattle Metro League Schools
It was a great showing for West Seattle HS athletes at the Seattle Metro League Championships at Southwest Athletic Complex, May 9th and 11th. The boys’ team compiled 51 points to tie defending champs O’Dea for 4th; the girls earned 34 points for 10th. Photos courtesy of Erik Bell.
The boys’ team was led by:
-Senior Cass Elliott defending his 300 hurdles title, winning in 37.76 seconds. He also placed 3rd in the 200m dash in 22.81 to score 16 points total.
(Elliott holds the state No. 1 mark this season in the 300m hurdles)-Junior Rylee Farrison came up 3rd in the boys 400m in 51.28 and 4th in the 200m in 23.21 and to grab 11 points. Elliott and Farrison capped off the meet teaming with Seniors Jackson Delaney and Alec Maroon to place 3rd (worth 6 points) in a thrilling 4x400m relay in 3 minutes 27.6 seconds, dangerously close to the school record of 3:27.41 seconds from 2016 (Elliott and Farrison were on that team as well).
(Rylee Farrison)-Senior Joe Kirk-Woodbury went out with a fantastic senior Metro performance, achieving personal bests for 2nd place in the discus throw (149 feet, 7 inches) and 4th in the shot put in (47 feet, 1.5 inches) to score 13 points. With two weeks left in the season, the discus school record of 150 feet, 6 inches (Jay Morgan in 2003) could be in jeopardy.
(Senior Joe-Kirk Woodbury was Metro Runner-Up in the discus throw Friday)-The boys 4 x 100m relay team of seniors Abdifatah Jeylani and Lucas Bower and sophomores Tom Nguyen and Kahlel Kelley placed 5th in the 4×100 meter relay (44.63) to score 4 points. Jeylani also placed 8th in the 100m dash for an additional point.
Girls’ team highlights included:
-Junior Chloe Cunliffe defended her pole vault title by going 13 feet even. She also placed 6th in the long jump in 16 feet, 5.25 inches to score 13 points altogether.
(Cunliffe has the top mark in Washington this season)-Senior Symmone Davis had a breakout meet which saw her advance to districts in 4 events (top 8 in Metro advance to that meet, next Wednesday/Friday at SWAC). She placed 2nd in the 100m hurdles (16.19), and 7th in the 300 hurdles finals in 50.53. seconds – though the big breakthrough came in the prelims for that race, in which she earned the 2nd overall time with a 47.73, an oh-so-close .03 seconds off Grace Sarver’s record from 2017. Davis’ efforts added 10 points for those events.
(Davis advanced to district in 2 individual events and helped 2 relays advance)-She also helped 2 relays advance – the 4x200m relay of Davis, sophomore Madison Kipley, senior Sierrah Bettin, and sophomore Katherine Long placed 5th in a season-best 1:48.54 (4 points); the 4x 100m of Davis, C. Cunliffe, Bettin, and sophomore Marissa Rackner placed 4th (5 points) in 51.36 seconds.
(Sophomore Madison Kipley was a key member of 2 relays)-Sophomore Sophia Cunliffe placed 7th in long jump (2 points) with a leap of 16 feet, 5 inches.
-The 4x400m relay of Kipley, Bettin, freshman Evelyn Hootman, and sophomore Melody Potratz placed 9th in 4 minutes, 15.78 seconds, and sophomore Malia Proctor threw 77 feet, 4 inches, also for 9th- thus earning spots as 1st alternates for the district meet next week.The Nathan Hale Boys won the meet with 86 point (by ½ point over Bishop Blanchet) and the Holy Names Academy girls won with 83 points (by 2 over Seattle Prep). Congratulations to Meghan Fiso from the third-place-in-state West Seattle High School girls’ basketball team! She has been honored as the Pacific Northwest Basketball Officials Association‘s Female Player of the Year. As explained by the PNBOA:
This award, as voted on by the officials who officiated your basketball games, is given to the player who shows great sportsmanship and leadership while also being an outstanding player.
Fiso, who’s a sophomore, received the award at a banquet last weekend. Thanks to proud mom Julie Fiso for sharing the news and the award photos!
If someone in your family plays Little League (or other youth sports), you know it takes a lot of support – the families, the coaches, and the sponsors. This is my favorite time of year. The crack of the bat, the cheering of the fans, the smell of freshly cut grass. Baseball season is upon us, finally! Every Spring since the dawn of time (well, maybe not quite that long ago), the eternal optimism, and hope of spring bring us a new baseball season. This time of year I am reminded of my childhood glory days spent fielding, throwing, hitting, and a little bit of pitching on the Bar-S Fields, followed by ice cream at Husky Deli after each team win.
I grew up in West Seattle and played in West Seattle Little League for the Laporte Eide Indians. Some of my best childhood memories happened in those few short formative years between 9 and 12 years old down at Bar-S Field. Our coach was a young up and comer named Vince Ormiston. Some of the guys I played with were Sean and Ryan Wooten, Scott Olsen, Brian Pena, Andy Coghill, Jarrett Trail, and quite a few others, some of whom I went on to play ball with at West Seattle High School. We shared some great times there at Bar S and I know the same is true for many others.
In my early 20’s I moved with my wife to Puyallup, and we now have an 11 year old son and an 8
year old daughter. Our son plays for South Hill Little League (majors) White Sox, and I get to
be one of the coaches on his team. This is another special group of young men, working hard to
play well, have fun, and develop their own passion for the game of Baseball. It is a pleasure
working with these players, our coaches, and the parents.With my increased involvement in Little League these past few seasons, I came to realize how much effort goes into keeping these organizations alive. From the many decisions and strategy sessions run by the Board for each local league, to the late nights setting lineups by the coaches, to the team moms busily collecting donations for raffle items at the league fundraisers, to all the thousands of parents, siblings, grandparents, and neighbors who support these players in their development. The moving parts that keep these leagues together are amazing to watch!
Considering everything I have gained personally from my own involvement in Little League, as well as that of my family and friends, we decided to have our company Rambo Total Pest Control become an official sponsor of West Seattle Little League and South Hill Little League.
We hope to give back and help out in a small way to keep the spirit of Little League alive and well for the next generation. Our sponsorship will help contribute to things like field
