A touch of sorcery on the track tonight at Southgate Roller Rink, during the Harry Potter-themed “House Cup” bout between Southside Revolution Junior Roller Derby and visiting Cherry Bomb Brawlers.
Good crowd at the rink as the skaters faced off – as is a roller derby tradition, the names on their shirts (and the refs’) were not to be missed:
On the sidelines, baked goods and raffle tickets were sold to raise money for the medical bills of the Brawlers’ beloved “Coach SmartAss,” who died recently after battling cancer.

Here’s how local teams did in last night’s high-school basketball, as we get closer to the end of the regular season:
SEATTLE LUTHERAN HS: Both teams won at home last night over Quilcene, girls 47-45, boys 71-11 (thanks to Mike Jensen for the scores).
WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL: Played at Garfield, where the WSHS girls remained undefeated, 62-40; the boys fell 86-32.
CHIEF SEALTH INTERNATIONAL HS: Played at Roosevelt, which took both games – girls 54-41, boys 69-57.

Saturday night brings the second bout of the season for Southside Revolution Junior Coed Roller Derby. The Cherry Bomb Brawlers from Spokane are visiting, and it’s more than a bout – the Brawlers’ coach Ti “SmartAss” Marchand” lost her battle with cancer days ago, and they’re raising money both to cover her bills and to help another coach’s mom. Southside team manager Pamela McCarty sends the reminder:
THE HOUSE CUP, DOUBLE HEADER BOUT! Come watch the Southside Revolution Junior Roller Derby positional and full-contact teams mashup with Cherry Bomb Brawlers and Friends. Bout 1 at 5:45 pm will be Southside Revolution Cadets & Friends Mashup. Bout 2 at 7:20 pm will be Southside Revolution Rebels, Cherry Bomb Brawlers, Mob City Misfits and Seattle Derby Brats.
This is a HARRY POTTER THEMED BOUT. The teams will be sorted into their ‘Houses’ at the beginning of the bout with the ‘Sorting Hat’ as per standard with all students of Hogwarts. The team with the most points will win the HOUSE CUP!
Doors at 5:15 pm, 1st Bout at 5:45 pm. $10 General Admission Adults, $5 Children 6-12, Children under 5 are free.

9:56 PM: Two girls-varsity basketball teams with perfect records faced off tonight; only one could remain that way – and in the end, that team was West Seattle High School, with a home-court triumph over Bishop Blanchet, 44-30.

For the second time in three weeks, West Seattle High School has a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Player of the Week. This time, it’s senior Lydia Giomi from the undefeated girls-varsity basketball team. WSHS athletic director Trevor Leopold sends word that Giomi was honored for a week in which she “had two double-doubles … with 18 points, 16 rebounds, and five blocks against Rainier Beach. And against Ballard, she recorded 15 points, 15 rebounds, and four steals.” You can cheer her and and her teammates in a huge home game at 7:30 pm tonight, as mentioned in our West Seattle Wednesday lineup – hosting another unbeaten team, Bishop Blanchet.
A crosstown showdown resulted in split results last night at Seattle Lutheran High School. The SLHS boys scored a big win over visiting Shorewood Christian:

Thanks to Shelley for the photo and report: “The Chief Sealth girls played another great game, coming off a win against Bainbridge Wednesday night. They traveled to Lakeside to overcome them 46-45.” She adds that the Seahawks, coached by Katie Jo Maris, are on a 5-game winning streak (see the season’s results and schedule here), and that this is their first win over Lakeside in at least 9 years.

West Seattle Baseball is a 100%-volunteer organization dedicated to teaching kids the game of baseball and giving them opportunities to get out on the diamond. In addition to regular-season play, all kids ages 7 and older participate in post-season tournaments. Those kids wanting to continue playing have opportunities to play baseball well into the summer in programs such as All Star programs for ages 8-12 years old as well as summer recreation programs including the West Seattle Crush at the Pee Wee fields. West Seattle Baseball also hosts several summer all-star tournaments in West Seattle featuring some of the top teams in Western Washington.
West Seattle Baseball welcomes players of all experience levels. West Seattle Baseball is proudly affiliated with the national PONY Baseball organization. Our goals include teaching the fundamentals of baseball and good sportsmanship while building a sense of community among players and their families. Practices begin in March, and the West Seattle Baseball regular season runs from the beginning of April to early June.

The skyline’s best-known “12” is blazing bright tonight on the Russell Investments Center – with the big Seahawks-Panthers playoff game less than 12 hours from kickoff. 5:59 PM THURSDAY: You know Northwest Wine Academy at South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) for its reds, its whites … and today, its blues and greens. The photo was taken while reps of Mayor Ed Murray‘s office were visiting NWWA this afternoon – there to pick up some choice NWWA wine for the mayor’s impending coast-to-coast bet with his counterpart in Charlotte, NC, over Sunday’s Seahawks-Panthers game.

Mayor Ed Murray has entered into a friendly wager with Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts ahead of Sunday’s NFC Divisional Playoff game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers. Sunday’s game marks the second consecutive year the two teams have met in the Divisional round, with the Seahawks winning last year 31-17.
“I’m looking forward to celebrating another Seahawk playoff win with another package of prizes from yet another Mayor of Charlotte,” said Mayor Murray. “We have never lost to the Panthers in the playoffs and I know Coach Carroll has the team ready for this road playoff game. Last week’s game is proof that the Seahawks can beat any opponent, in any weather, in any stadium.”
“As much as I’d love to share our fine southern cuisine with our cross-country colleagues, they will have to settle for eating crow after we beat the ‘Hawks’,” said Mayor Roberts. “Coach Rivera has the team prepared to defeat anyone standing in their path to the Super Bowl. Pete Carroll will be sleepless in Charlotte trying to develop a game plan to stop Cam Newton.”
If the Seahawks beat the Panthers, Mayor Roberts will send Mayor Murray barbeque from Mac’s Speed Shop, beer from The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, and salted caramel brownies from Amelie’s French Bakery.
If the Panthers defeat the Seahawks, Mayor Murray will send Mayor Roberts beer from Pike Brewing, wine from the South Seattle College’s Northwest Wine Academy, and Chinese barbeque from Kau Kau in the Chinatown-International District.
Sunday’s game kicks off at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte at 10:05 a.m. Pacific time.
3:47 PM: West Seattle High School‘s #1 is Nate Pryor, photographed during the team’s Saturday night home win over Stadium HS. Today, he received a statewide honor, announced by WSHS athletic director Trevor Leopold:
Congrats to Nate Pryor, who was named WIAA Player of the Week! Pryor averaged 21.5 points, 6.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and three steals per game last week, in victories over Stadium and O’Dea. The point guard hit a buzzer beater to defeat O’Dea by one, 70-69.

The West Seattle High School girls-varsity basketball team remains undefeated after last night’s home-court win over Eastside Catholic, 54-36. Above, Lexi Ioane was a triple threat – steal leader with 8, second-leading rebounder with 7, number-three scorer with 9. Fellow senior Lydia Giomi led those last two categories:

Head coach Darnell Taylor‘s league-leading team is on the road for the next two games, starting at Cleveland HS on Wednesday, 7:30 pm.

Victory at home last night for the Chief Sealth International High School girls-varsity basketball team – 45 to 42 over Seattle Prep. Sealth’s record is 3-6 as the midpoint of the regular season approaches.
Head coach Katie Jo Maris definitely had reason to smile.
Next up, the Seahawks host nearby Shorewood Christian on Monday night (January 11th), 6 pm.
Thanks to West Seattle High School boys-basketball head coach Keffrey Fazio for sharing the clip from last night’s game, in which his #9-ranked team beat #4-ranked O’Dea 60-59, on the road, at the buzzer, on a shot by junior standout Nate Pryor. The coach adds, “Pryor also had 5 rebounds and 7 assists. Seniors Chaaka Trahan and Carter Golgart provided key plays down the stretch. Junior Akili Kasim had 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Junior Yusuf Mohamed had 9 points and 6 rebounds.” The Wildcats are now 6-0 in the Metro League, 9-1 overall, and will be back at home at 6:30 pm Saturday vs. Stadium HS.

This afternoon in Mountlake Terrace, the West Seattle High School boys’ varsity team had its first loss of the season, 49-43, to the host team in the MTHS holiday tournament. … The WSHS varsity girls remain undefeated, 9-0 after a victory over Olympic HS in East Bremerton earlier this week, 76-31 … Last night, the Seattle Lutheran HS boys beat The Northwest School, 51-26 (thanks to Mike Jensen for the score report) … The Chief Sealth International High School varsity basketball teams have been off since December 18th; while the girls don’t play again until next week, the boys are playing tonight at North Kitsap, and we’ll add the score to this story when it’s in.

On New Year’s Eve-Eve, you can jump-start your 2016 fitness plans with West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor). WSR co-proprietor Lori McConnell says they’ve scheduled another info night for their free West Seattle Get Fit couch-to-half-marathon program, tomorrow (Wednesday, December 30th) at 6:30 pm:
We will train participants to complete a half marathon in June (there are several to choose from). Participants will start with one mile on Saturday, January 2nd, at 8 am at West Seattle Runner. This is a program for beginners! It is free. Participants can run as a group on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings and will get a plan to follow. We will also provide several free clinics along the way to increase knowledge for runners. We do have walkers do the program as well, so walkers and runners are welcome.

West Seattle HS just finished up the annual WSHS Wildcat Winter Mini Basketball Camp. 65 kids came for a two-day basketball camp for grades 4th through 8th. Keep a look out for the next WSHS basketball camp!
Speaking of WSHS basketball – both the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams are undefeated and leading Metro League 3A so far this year. While the girls are off this week, the boys play at home tonight vs. Thomas Jefferson High School at the WSHS gym, 6:30 pm (with a C game at 3 pm and junior varsity at 4:45 pm).

Whoo-hoo! West Seattle Shock Boys U16 just won the SYSA city tournament championship played in Shoreline.
Led by Coach Dan Day, Shock was down 3-0 at half. They fought their way back to take the lead; then the game ended up tied at 5-5 at end of regulation play. Shock then won on a penalty kick shootout. A very exciting game for all! Go, Shock!
According to the tournament schedule, the Shock’s opponent was Magnolia Fake Madrid.
West Seattle’s newest state-champion team is the WS Red Bulls boys’ U11 team from the West Seattle Soccer Club! Last month, we shared the news that the team had won the District 3 championship – in a final that included another WSSC team. This past weekend, they won it all – James Ross shares the photos and this report:
On Saturday, the WS Red Bulls ’04 U11 boys soccer team from the West Seattle Soccer Club won both the semi-final and the Championship game in the Washington Youth Soccer Association Recreational Cup held at the Starfire Sports Complex. These boys are bringing the WYSA Rec Cup to West Seattle as 2015 STATE CHAMPIONS!!!
Winning the Rec Cup State Championship is the culmination of a dominating year for the Red Bulls, with the team having amassed 20 wins and no losses (scoring 91 goals and allowing only 6!) during the Fall season. In the WYSA State tournament, the Red Bulls stepped up their play and went 7-0, scoring 34 goals and allowing only 1 while facing the state’s best teams!
The semi-final game was a very tight match, with the Red Bulls facing off against the SC Nomads from Vancouver, WA (District 5). The only goal came late in the game when a handball penalty awarded the RB’s with a free kick that found the back of the net, allowing the team to escape with a 1-0 victory. In the championship game, the Red Bulls matched up against the South Beach Wildcats from Westport (District 7). The Red Bulls wasted no time getting on the board early in the first minute. The RB defense remained dominate by shutting down all attacks while the midfielders and forwards kept pressure on the Nomads’ defense the entire game on the way to a 3-0 victory.
As a team parent, I can’t express how incredibly proud I am of these young men. All of the early Sunday morning training sessions and late practices, sometimes in the dark, rain and wind, really tested their commitment (and mine!)… but they were fueled by a vision that Coach Eric had for them… that these boys had the chance to come together as a team, dedicate themselves, and create something special. He promised them a memory that they could share for the rest of their lives. Watching this group raise the Cup while beaming with pride was proof that the promise had been fulfilled!
Thanks go out to Coach Eric, Coach Russ and Coach Scott for growing these boys both as teammates and as individuals, to the other parents that sacrificed their evenings and weekends to the vision… and to the West Seattle Soccer Club for providing an outstanding opportunity for kids to learn and excel in the beautiful game!

‘Tis the season for .. roller derby! We stopped at our area’s only roller rink, Southgate, last night during the first bout of Southside Revolution Junior Coed Roller Derby‘s second season. The theme – as you might have seen in the preview we published – “Skate Wars,” playing off this coming week’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” premiere. Note the ref’s handle:
Southside Revolution’s two teams faced off with their counterparts from the Kitsap Derby Brats (in red) from the other side of the Sound. The theme carried on into a bake sale during the bout:

Lashanna confirms Southside Revolution won both bouts. (Added – from coach Pam – scores were: SSR Cadets 282 – Kitsap Rawkettes 212, and SSR Rebels 342 ~ Kitsap Bomb Squad 90.) The team launched last year and practices at Southgate.
