Three basketball playoff games tonight in West Seattle, and the first one was the closest:
SEATTLE LUTHERAN GIRLS VS. CEDAR PARK CHRISTIAN: Our Instagram clip shows the final seconds of this game, won by the Saints, 42-41. Though Lutheran led for much of the game – ahead 16-9 after the first quarter, 24-18 at the half, 36-30 after three quarters – they fell behind with just over three minutes to go, and only regained the lead with :10 to go in the game, on a basket by #10, Taylor Stordahl. Tonight’s top scorer for the Saints, #15 Abbi Sanders with 11.
In longtime head coach Bruce Carlson‘s final season, they’ll next face Tulalip Heritage.
The game is 6:15 pm Tuesday at Mount Vernon Christian.
SEATTLE LUTHERAN BOYS VS. LUMMI NATION: In the nightcap at Lutheran, the boys beat Lummi Nation 68-44.
Their next game: 6:15 pm Monday vs. Neah Bay at Mount Vernon Christian.
And the only game of the night featuring two local teams:
WEST SEATTLE HS-CHIEF SEALTH IHS BOYS: It was a loser-out crosstown-battle game at the West Seattle High School gym.
The first quarter was close, and low-scoring – after the Wildcats’ #4 Chaaka Trahan got the first points of the night, making it WSHS 2-0 about a minute in. Things proceeded to a 9-7 West Seattle lead at the end of the first quarter, with #24 Carter Golgart landing a rim-hanging dunk midway through.
The Wildcats started pulling away from the Seahawks on three-pointers by #3 Tyler Lenzie in the first half of the second quarter, and it was 28-12 at halftime.
Lenzie struck again with a three-pointer leading off second-half scoring and the gap kept widening. The Seahawks started perking up in the fourth quarter but it was just too late, and the game ended WSHS 53, Sealth 33. West Seattle advances in the district playoffs, 8:15 pm Tuesday, vs. Bellevue High School at Bellevue Community College.
(WSB video: WSHS play from last minute of first half)
7:33 PM FRIDAY: Heartbreaker for the West Seattle High School girls-basketball team tonight – their season-long winning streak ended with a 67-64 loss to Bishop Blanchet in the Metro League championship game. Blanchet was also undefeated when the two teams met last month; WSHS got the best of them that time, but not tonight. The Wildcats went into the locker room at halftime with a 34-32 lead, but the second half belonged to Blanchet. West Seattle’s postseason rolls on, with a district-tournament game against a TBA opponent at 3 pm Tuesday at Bellevue College.
ADDED EARLY SATURDAY: Even as this postseason represents the swan song for the Wildcats’ senior stars, up-and-coming WSHS players performed well too, particularly Kelsie Lenzie:
With 11 points, she was one of three West Seattle players who scored in double digits. Bet you can guess who the other two were:
#32, senior Lydia Giomi, led WSHS with 16 … and #30, senior Lexi Ioane, followed with 13.
#20, freshman Grace Sarver, contributed 9:
Though the two teams stayed close in the first half, Blanchet had a big scoring run in the third quarter that WSHS could not recover from despite outscoring them in the final quarter.
The bracket has been updated; West Seattle will play either Juanita or Garfield in that 3 pm Tuesday game at Bellevue College (those two face off at 7 pm Saturday).
SATURDAY GAMES: 7 pm, the West Seattle boys host Chief Sealth in a loser-out district-playoff game, and there are two Tri-District games tonight at Seattle Lutheran High School – the SLHS girls vs. Cedar Park Christian at 5 pm, followed by the boys vs. Lummi Nation at 7 pm.
From tonight’s high-school basketball playoff games:
CHIEF SEALTH BOYS’ NAILBITER: One-point win for the Chief Sealth International High School boys, coached by Colin Slingsby, tonight – 62-61 over Bishop Blanchet – so they move on to the district tournament as Metro #9.
This sets up a crosstown showdown, we just learned via the updated bracket, because of this:
WSHS BOYS FINISH FOURTH: Losing to Cleveland tonight, 59-56, the West Seattle High School boys, coached by Keffrey Fazio, finish fourth in the Metro League, and will host Sealth on Saturday in a loser-out game, 7 pm.
One team’s season ended tonight:
CHIEF SEALTH GIRLS’ SEASON OVER: The CSIHS girls’ run is done, with a loss at home to Holy Names, 60-45. We stopped by the Sealth gym in the final moments:

(WSB photo: Sealth #33, Kamryn Thomas)
The Seahawk girls, coached by Katie Jo Maris, have season highlights to remember including a six-game win streak between January 8th and January 27th.
And one local team had tonight off, playing for a title tomorrow:
WSHS GIRLS PLAY TOMORROW: The undefeated Wildcat girls, coached by Darnell Taylor, play Bishop Blanchet for the Metro League championship on Friday night, 5:45 pm at Ingraham HS. However it turns out, their first district-tournament game will be on Tuesday.
Two more local teams start postseason play Saturday:
SEATTLE LUTHERAN GAMES ON SATURDAY: In the Tri-District basketball tournaments, the SLHS girls host Cedar Park Christian at 5 pm Saturday, followed by the boys hosting Lummi Nation at 7 pm.
The perfect-record season continues for the West Seattle High School girls’ basketball team – they defeated Roosevelt Wednesday night 53-39, and moving on to Friday’s Metro League title game.
We covered the WSHS game, but before we get to more on that, three other scores:
*The WSHS boys lost to Rainier Beach, 67-57, and will play Cleveland at 7:30 pm tonight (at Ingraham HS)
*The Chief Sealth IHS boys lost to Franklin, 85-45, and play again tonight (awaiting word on time/team)
*CSIHS girls lost to Rainier Beach, 44-41, and play Holy Names at home, 5:45 pm tonight
Now, back to the Wildcat girls’ victory:
Led by Metro League Coach of the Year Darnell Taylor, the WSHS girls ran out to a 20-point lead at one point in the second half, but Roosevelt went on its own run and closed to within five points.
WSHS managed to break Roosevelt’s full-court press and roar on to victory. Metro League MVP Lydia Giomi and All-League First Team Lexi Ioane both had 18 points.
The championship game is a rematch of a game two weeks ago when Blanchet was the only other undefeated Metro League team. They meet again at 5:45 pm Friday at Ingraham HS (1819 N. 135th).
The second night of the Metro League high-school basketball playoffs is over, and both Chief Sealth International High School teams won tonight: Girls 57-51 over (and at) Eastside Catholic; boys 52-48 over Roosevelt at home.
Next up for the Seahawk squads: Both play again tomorrow – boys vs. Franklin, 7:30 pm Wednesday at Garfield (400 23rd Ave.); girls vs. Rainier Beach, 5:45 pm at Ballard (1418 NW 65th).
The Metro League basketball playoffs are on! At O’Dea tonight, the West Seattle High School boys beat the home team, 73-54. That means – per the bracket – they’ll play Rainier Beach next, 5:45 pm Wednesday at Ingraham HS (1819 N. 135th). Tonight’s top scorer: Nate Pryor (24 points), one of the Wildcats announced for All-League honors earlier today.
ALSO AHEAD: Here’s our previous list of local teams’ first playoff games – next up, the Chief Sealth International High School boys and girls both have games at 7 pm tomorrow, the boys hosting Roosevelt, the girls at Eastside Catholic.
With the Metro League high-school basketball playoffs starting tonight, the league has announced its honors for the season.

(Coach Darnell Taylor – WSB photo from last month)
West Seattle High School‘s undefeated girls-basketball team has both the league MVP – Lydia Giomi, who also won Defensive Player of the Year – and Coach of the Year – Darnell Taylor.
Giomi, a senior, was MVP last year too (not just in basketball, but also in volleyball), and WSHS also had the Coach of the Year last year (Taylor’s predecessor Sonya Elliott). The girls team also has Lexi Ioane on the first all-league team, Grace Sarver on the third all-league team, and honorable mentions for Gabby Sarver and Izzy Turk.
The WSHS boys’ team has three players with all-league honors – Nate Pryor on the first team, Carter Golgart and Yusuf Mohamed with honorable mentions.
Chief Sealth International High School placed two players on each honorable-mention basketball lineup – from the girls’ team, Allison Hadaway and Kali Schroyer; from the boys’ team, Isiah Hart and Evan Moe.
P.S. We published a list of the first-scheduled playoff games last night, here.

6:12 AM: Good morning – no incidents in/from West Seattle so far. Two reminders:
FAUNTLEROY WAY SPEED LIMIT: The stretch between SW Alaska and California SW is now 30 mph, with signage installed on Saturday as SDOT said it would be.
FERRY SUBSTITUTION: M/V Tillikum is taking the place of M/V Sealth on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth state-ferry run today; its capacity is 87 vehicles, while Sealth’s is 90.
7:06 AM: Crash partly blocking the right lane in NB 1st Ave. So. Bridge.
7:35 AM: WSDOT says that has cleared.
8:35 AM: If you’re headed southbound on 35th from the Triangle or anyplace northbound, you will be diverted at Alaska. A power pole is about to fall over – apparently just rotted through its base, according to SPD, which has the road blocked for about half a block at Alaska until City Light can take care of it. Thanks to the person who texted us about the closure (206-293-6302, any time)!
8:43 AM: Added the photo above. Talked to another officer who said the pole rot was part of the problem – the pole getting backed into by a delivery truck was the other part. No ETA on how long for a fix; we’ll check back. The southbound 21 is affected, Metro has tweeted:
Transit Alert – Rt 21 is rerouted at 35 Av SW/Alaska St. Use the stops SB on 35 Av SW/NS SW Snoqualmie St or EB on SW Morgan St/FS 35 Av SW.
— King County Metro (@kcmetrobus) February 8, 2016
9:28 AM: Thanks to Joe and a text tipster for noting that the NB 21 is also being diverted right now – Joe says the City Light crane is on site so the road is blocked both ways at the scene just south of Alaska.
10:01 AM: Metro says northbound is back to normal, southbound remains blocked.
ADDED LATER, SIDE NOTE: For the record – we checked with City Light regarding the ongoing replacement of poles before something like this takes them out. From Scott Thomsen of SCL:
We do have an effort underway to steadily replace old poles that have deteriorated over time.
We have identified about 5,500 poles that currently need to be replaced. This is a backlog that built up as the result of deferred maintenance following the 2000-01 West Coast energy crisis and, more recently, other work associated with new service installations in one of the nation’s fastest growing cities filling the schedules of our crews.
We identify 500 to 600 more poles each year that add to the list of those needing to be replaced. We expect to replace about 1,400 poles a year to steadily eliminate that backlog over several years.
The regular season for high-school basketball is over and the postseason is about to begin.
The first Metro League tournament games are on the schedule for the varsity teams from West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School.
*WSHS plays at 7:30 pm Wednesday (February 10th) at Nathan Hale HS (10750 30th NE), vs. winner of tomorrow’s Cleveland-Roosevelt game
*CSIHS plays at 7 pm Tuesday (February 9th), at Eastside Catholic HS (232 228th Ave SE, Sammamish), vs. ECHS
*WSHS plays at 7 pm tomorrow (February 8th) at O’Dea (802 Terry), vs. O’Dea
*CSIHS plays at 7 pm Tuesday (February 9th) at home (2600 SW Thistle), vs. Roosevelt
*************
West Seattle’s only private high school, Seattle Lutheran, also is sending basketball teams to the playoffs, but opponents, locations, and times aren’t set yet – only the date: Next Saturday (February 13th) is when the SLHS boys and girls both will play their first games.

As winter sports wrap up, it’s time to gear up for spring sports – including softball! Meg Simmons from West Seattle Girls Softball shares the news that signups are happening now:

Thanks to Bonnie for texting the photo to our hotline (206-293-6302)! The 2016 West Seattle Beach Run is on. It’s a 25K/50K “fun run” formerly known as the West Seattle Fat Ass. Runners are going from Lincoln Park to Seacrest Park and back if they’re doing the 25K, twice for the 50K (no road closures – this is on sidewalks/paths). Proceeds after expenses are going to the White Center Food Bank.
Thanks to Meg Simmons for photos from the big game: In its first-ever postseason play, Westside School‘s 8th-grade boys basketball team has won the CYO championship, defeating St. Edward this evening, 54-39.
This season marked not only the first championship won by Westside, but also the first time it’s played in a championship game, and the first time it’s won a postseason game!
To get to the finals tonight at Bishop Blanchet, the Wolves defeated St Francis in the quarterfinals last Saturday 44-32, and then beat archrival Holy Rosary last Sunday, 55-46.

(Westside School photo from 72-70 victory over Holy Rosary)
Congratulations and good luck to the 8th-grade boys-varsity basketball team at Westside School (WSB sponsor), which is playing for the CYO championship tomorrow – a historic milestone for the school, says Westside’s Ted Holmes:
This was the first time a Westside School basketball team has played a varsity schedule, the first time a Westside School sports team has won a playoff game, and now the first time a Westside School team has advanced to the championship game.
Westside School defeated St Francis in the quarterfinals last Saturday 44-32, and then beat arch rival Holy Rosary for the second time this season last Sunday, 55-46. Westside School trailed to Holy Rosary at half 27-18, but scored 19 points in the third quarter and 17 more in the fourth, to come back and secure the win. Westside School will face St Edward in the championship.
The game is at 4:30 pm Saturday at Bishop Blanchet (8200 Wallingford Ave. N.).

Last regular-season home game for the undefeated West Seattle High School girls-varsity basketball team on Wednesday night – and their season-long win streak continued with a 51-43 win over Seattle Prep. Pre-game honors for seniors included special balls to #32 Lydia Giomi (above) and #30 Lexi Ioane (below) – Giomi scored her 1000th point vs. Eastside Catholic back on January 8th and pulled down her 1000th rebound vs. Garfield on January 29th; Ioane scored her 1000th point vs. Lakeside on December 16th.
Other Wildcat seniors include #21 Gabby Sarver and #15 Sarah DuLong. The team finishes the regular season Friday night at Franklin.
At Chief Sealth International High School tonight, the last regular-season home game for the girls-varsity team brought a 60-42 loss to Holy Names. In our photo is the Seahawks’ #2 Allison Hadaway, one of the seniors honored tonight along with #11 Bella Cortez De Bonar, #24 Elliott Snodgrass, and #34 Kali Schroyer. The team plays at Eastside Catholic Friday night, and then the postseason begins.
10:57 PM: Both varsity teams won tonight at Seattle Lutheran, including the girls’ team with a special incentive:
As reported here earlier, this was the last scheduled home game in the last of 35 seasons for Coach Bruce Carlson. A special photo included alums of his teams:
We’ll have video of the tribute and more photos later. As for the game itself, the girls beat Crosspoint, 46-22.
The SLHS boys also went home with a win over Crosspoint, 64-43.
#34 Josh Meyer (above) was top scorer with 26. More on this game later, too.
ADDED 8:35 AM WEDNESDAY: Video and photos:
By Randall Hauk
Reporting for West Seattle Blog
Tonight, Seattle Lutheran High School will hold a post-game ceremony to recognize its 35-season women’s-basketball coach at his final scheduled home game.
“But first we need to win a game,” says Bruce Carlson, tonight’s honoree.
A victory for Seattle Lutheran (6-1 conference, 11-6 overall) over visiting Crosspoint (1-6, 1-14) would keep the Saints within a game of first-place Evergreen Lutheran (7-0, 12-1), who will host SLHS in the season finale on Friday with a share of the SeaTac League title in play for the winners.
While the crowd in the gym tonight will certainly enjoy the elevated stakes in the basketball game itself, the stands will be filled with people there to pay tribute to a man who has led multiple generations of West Seattle athletes: “I’ve coached players who are children of some of my former players or of players I watched playing for the men’s team,” says Carlson. “That’s one way to know you’re getting old!”
In addition to coaching former players’ children, Carlson has “been blessed” to have had had players return to help with summer scrimmaging, with a few even serving as assistant coaches.
The West Seattle native decided a few years ago that he would depart with his current senior class:
A touch of sorcery on the track tonight at Southgate Roller Rink, during the Harry Potter-themed “House Cup” bout between Southside Revolution Junior Roller Derby and visiting Cherry Bomb Brawlers.
Good crowd at the rink as the skaters faced off – as is a roller derby tradition, the names on their shirts (and the refs’) were not to be missed:
On the sidelines, baked goods and raffle tickets were sold to raise money for the medical bills of the Brawlers’ beloved “Coach SmartAss,” who died recently after battling cancer.
We will update later when we get the results.
Here’s how local teams did in last night’s high-school basketball, as we get closer to the end of the regular season:
SEATTLE LUTHERAN HS: Both teams won at home last night over Quilcene, girls 47-45, boys 71-11 (thanks to Mike Jensen for the scores).
WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL: Played at Garfield, where the WSHS girls remained undefeated, 62-40; the boys fell 86-32.
CHIEF SEALTH INTERNATIONAL HS: Played at Roosevelt, which took both games – girls 54-41, boys 69-57.

(WSB photo from Southside Revolution’s December bout)
Saturday night brings the second bout of the season for Southside Revolution Junior Coed Roller Derby. The Cherry Bomb Brawlers from Spokane are visiting, and it’s more than a bout – the Brawlers’ coach Ti “SmartAss” Marchand” lost her battle with cancer days ago, and they’re raising money both to cover her bills and to help another coach’s mom. Southside team manager Pamela McCarty sends the reminder:
THE HOUSE CUP, DOUBLE HEADER BOUT! Come watch the Southside Revolution Junior Roller Derby positional and full-contact teams mashup with Cherry Bomb Brawlers and Friends. Bout 1 at 5:45 pm will be Southside Revolution Cadets & Friends Mashup. Bout 2 at 7:20 pm will be Southside Revolution Rebels, Cherry Bomb Brawlers, Mob City Misfits and Seattle Derby Brats.
This is a HARRY POTTER THEMED BOUT. The teams will be sorted into their ‘Houses’ at the beginning of the bout with the ‘Sorting Hat’ as per standard with all students of Hogwarts. The team with the most points will win the HOUSE CUP!
Doors at 5:15 pm, 1st Bout at 5:45 pm. $10 General Admission Adults, $5 Children 6-12, Children under 5 are free.
This is at our area’s only roller rink, Southgate, in White Center,

(WSB photos by Patrick Sand – click any image for larger view)
9:56 PM: Two girls-varsity basketball teams with perfect records faced off tonight; only one could remain that way – and in the end, that team was West Seattle High School, with a home-court triumph over Bishop Blanchet, 44-30.
ADDED EARLY THURSDAY: More from the game, ahead:

(WSB photo: Lydia Giomi, WSHS #32, in victory vs. Eastside Catholic on January 8th)
For the second time in three weeks, West Seattle High School has a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Player of the Week. This time, it’s senior Lydia Giomi from the undefeated girls-varsity basketball team. WSHS athletic director Trevor Leopold sends word that Giomi was honored for a week in which she “had two double-doubles … with 18 points, 16 rebounds, and five blocks against Rainier Beach. And against Ballard, she recorded 15 points, 15 rebounds, and four steals.” You can cheer her and and her teammates in a huge home game at 7:30 pm tonight, as mentioned in our West Seattle Wednesday lineup – hosting another unbeaten team, Bishop Blanchet.
