Four members of the WSHS Varsity boys’ golf team qualified for the 3A Metro/King Co. District tournament after competing in the Metro League Golf Championship last week. Tony Flores, Bailey Fuentes, Alex Nguyen and Zach Gibson finished in the top 39 to earn a place to compete Tuesday at Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent. Zach Gibson medaled for the Wildcats with a 6th-place finish and a two-round total of 149.

9:02 PM THURSDAY: Another football game of note tonight – score’s in from Memorial Stadium downtown: Chief Sealth International High School 18, West Seattle High School 13. That means the Seahawks move on to the playoffs; we’re awaiting word of their next game.
8:35 AM FRIDAY: In today’s CSIHS Daily Bulletin, athletic director Ernest Policarpio notes, “Chief Sealth will be playing either Blanchet or Prep next week in the playoffs.” (Those two schools play tonight @ 7 pm at West Seattle Stadium.)
Less than a week after their Huling Bowl faceoff (WSB photo/video coverage here), West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International HS meet again tomorrow, at the start of the prep postseason. The game’s at 4:30 pm Thursday at Memorial Stadium downtown.

BOO! One of your earliest pre-Halloween chances to get spooked is just one week away – the West Seattle Monster Dash in Lincoln Park next Saturday (October 24), benefiting the South Seattle College Cooperative Preschools. Costumes encouraged, and yes, there are prizes! The Monster Dash starts with the main 5K at 9 am, then the kids’ dash at 10 am, and the costume contest/race-awards ceremony at 10:30 am. Pumpkin-painting and coloring activities, too. You have until Wednesday to get a discount rate for adult registration; you can still sign up after that, but the price goes up. If you don’t want to sign up online, West Seattle Runner (2743 California SW; WSB sponsor) has a packet-pickup/signup event 3-7 pm on Friday (October 23rd), day before race day.

When will the mountains get snow? Don’t know. When will West Seattleites gather for the annual Community Ski and Snowboard Swap, presented by Mountain to Sound Outfitters? That, we DO know: Next weekend. To be specific, gear dropoff 10 am-6 pm Friday (October 23rd), swap 10 am-6 pm Saturday (October 24th) and 10 am-4 pm Sunday (October 25th):
This community ski swap is a great way to buy or sell your used equipment and get amazing deals on new gear. There will be a great selection of skis, snowboards, boots, clothing, camping gear, accessories, and more!
As usual, it’s happening at the VFW Hall across the street from M2SO, 3601 SW Alaska in The Triangle.
Two notes about Seattle Lutheran High School (WSB sponsor) – its Oktoberfest Auction benefit is tonight, starting at 5:30 pm at the school gym (4100 SW Genesee). And the Saints’ football team won on the road last night – 34-20 at Rainier Christian HS (thanks to Mike Jensen for the score report) – they’re 4-2 for the season so far. Next up, a home game against Quilcene next Saturday (October 24th) at West Seattle Stadium, 1:30 pm.

Young swimmer in the house? S/he might consider trying out for the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) Dolphins. The Y shares this update with news of tryouts as well as the team’s new coach:
The West Seattle YMCA Dolphins Swim Team is excited to introduce new Head Coach Craig Mallery. Craig was the Head Coach of the UPAC Sharks through 2014. He was also the head coach of Seattle University’s men’s and women’s teams from 1999-2012. While at Seattle U, he developed and led the team to reach NCAA Division 1 level status. He has also been a head age group coach for club teams and has experience as a Masters level coach. Coach Craig has twice been named National Coach of the Year, as well as Conference Coach of the Year in 2011. He was a collegiate level swimmer at Boston University. This year’s season is just getting underway, and the West Seattle Dolphins would like to invite all interested youth to come to the YMCA for a swim team tryout. Tryouts assess readiness and allow swimmers to be placed in the appropriate group/level. Swim team members, both boys and girls, range in age from 6 to 18. Coach Craig puts the kids to a challenging workout several times a week, but there is rarely a complaint because they enjoy the work out, exercise and camaraderie. The swim meets are fun, exciting, and competitive. They take place in Seattle and around Puget Sound, giving the kids a great opportunity to experience swim clubs of all types and sizes.
Swimming is a healthy activity that can be enjoyed all through life. Many of our current and former team members have formed strong friendships and gone on to swim competitively at college. 10:05 PM FRIDAY: For the first time since 2011 – the West Seattle High School Wildcats take the trophy at the annual Huling Bowl game vs. Chief Sealth International High School. The final score at Southwest Athletic Complex in Westwood: WSHS 29, CSIHS 6. This was also homecoming and Senior Night for the Wildcats.
ADDED 6:25 AM SATURDAY: Top staff from both schools, including principals Ruth Medsker of WSHS (below left) and Aida Fraser-Hammer of CSIHS (below right), were at the grill for the pre-game barbecue:

Now, as for the football:
The first quarter was a long one. The Wildcats got on the scoreboard with just under five minutes left, with #3 Nate Pryor scoring the TD less than a minute after an interception. A WSHS field goal with 2:30 left in the first quarter brought the score to 9-0.
The Seahawks made an impressive defensive stand with just under seven minutes left in the second quarter, when a pass brought the Wildcats to first and goal, but the TD was denied, with plays including a sack by Sealth’s Sam Tino. Finally, WSHS kicked a field goal, and it was 12-0 at 5:04 left in the half. The next few minutes saw multiple turnovers, and the score remained WSHS 12, Sealth 0 at halftime.
First TD of the second half, at 9:42 left in the third quarter, was WSHS #18 Carter Golgart to Pryor. 19-0 is where the third quarter ended, and the game was already more than two hours old.
Golgart himself scored the Wildcats’ last TD at 10:25 left in the game.
#33 Joe Merlino kicked the point after, taking it to 26-0. Then a field goal for WSHS, and the score was 29-0 until Sealth started threatening in the final two minutes or so.
The Seahawks’ #11 Daron Camacho had a big run, then a TD with :15 on the clock, and that was the final score – 29-6. The Tom Burggraff-coached Wildcats’ trophy celebration followed, with #85 Andrew Burggraff and #17 Gabe Gangon hoisting it as our video begins:
That was the last regular-season game for WSHS and CSIHS. What happens next, we’re told, depends on the outcome of tonight’s Garfield-Rainier Beach game – there’s a chance Sealth and WSHS could face off again at the postseason’s start.

At Southwest Athletic Complex on Friday night, Chief Sealth International High School‘s homecoming game vs. Ingraham ended in a 1-point loss, 13-12. But before we get to the details, an update on a frightening incident that stopped the game for a while just before the end of the first half:
Sealth senior Andrew Leota was down for about 20 minutes before being taken to a medic unit. Both teams and their cheer squads made a line to the ambulance and applauded as the stretcher went by.
While injuries are not uncommon at football games, many already had a nearby tragedy on their mind, the death of Evergreen player Kenney Bui after an injury in Burien a week earlier, so that gave this even more gravity. This injury, however, did not appear to be major. Sealth athletic director Ernest Policarpio told us that Andrew thought he “took a helmet to his lower back” and was doing better as he was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The game eventually resumed and the first half was finished. We will be checking on his condition.

For the first nighttime home game of the Seahawks’ season, the big bright “12” was back downtown. We photographed it shortly after Seattle’s 13-10 win over the Detroit Lions. This was the Seahawks’ only scheduled Monday Night Football appearance this year; they’re set for a Sunday Night Football home game on November 15th, hosting the Cardinals.
9:49 PM P.S. Via Twitter, we learn Zillow is now the largest tenant in the building.
If you missed this year’s Chuck Diesel Invitational Golf Tournament – two weeks ago at the West Seattle Golf Course – you’ll want to plan to get on the list for next year. It’s a benefit for The First Tee of Greater Seattle, whose mission is to “impact the lives of young people from all backgrounds by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.” This year’s CDI raised more than $26,000 for The First Tee, more than double last year’s haul, and the money’s going to help build a citywide clubhouse for TFT, in particular its “Crooked Club Room.” Thanks to TFT’s volunteer director Shelby Lanting for sharing the shoutout (including the photo) for the CDI crew, Charlie Anderson and friends, who have been teeing up this fundraiser since 2006.

According to @SealthAthletics tweets, Daron Camacho scored the TD, Baxter Knannlein kicked the extra point. Next Friday night at 7, Sealth is home at Southwest Athletic Complex vs. Ingraham.

One local team had a home football game last night – the West Seattle High School Wildcats hosted Roosevelt HS at Southwest Athletic Complex.
The visitors went home with the win – 35-15. Two quarterbacks played for the Wildcats, #18 Carter Golgart (above) – who passed to Nate Pryor for the run that netted WSHS’s first touchdown – and #17 Gabe Gangon (below):

The Wildcats are now 2-3 on the season.
Road game for the West Seattle High School Wildcats on Friday night, and they went away with a win – at Southeast Athletic Complex, WSHS 22, Rainier Beach 20. Next week, the Wildcats are home at SW Athletic Complex, hosting Roosevelt at 7 pm Friday (October 2nd).

You never lose hope so long as the team’s still out on the field and there’s time on the clock, and so went Friday night for Chief Sealth International High School players and supporters, hosting Ballard at Southwest Athletic Complex.

The Seahawks fought on as their first home game of the season continued, though the final score was lopsided – Ballard 46, Sealth 0.

“Both teams played their hearts out!” So said West Seattle High School volleyball head coach Staci Stringer after her team hosted their crosstown rivals from Chief Sealth International High School on Wednesday night.
WSHS took the match in three games – 25-21, 25-15, 25-14.
This was the third match of the season for both teams.
Next up for the Wildcats – they’re playing at also-undefeated Ballard, 7 pm Friday night, in a game that could determine division leadership. The Seahawks, coached by Lorna Considine, play at home at 7 on Friday, hosting Franklin.

It’s on! The West Seattle Soccer Club‘s fall season started today, and it’s another record-setter: 2,036 young players signed up to participate, 343 volunteer coaches on board to help them. Some played today, some play tomorrow, and some start next weekend; you can find schedule and other league info via westseattlesoccer.org.

Toward the left of that photo, #5 on the USA Baseball 18U National Team, is West Seattle High School senior Morgan McCullough, gesturing “#1” with both hands right after he and his teammates won the WBSC World Cup tournament in Osaka, Japan this weekend. We wrote on Saturday about the team making it into Sunday’s title game; Team USA was victorious over the host team, taking the USA’s third consecutive title, 2-1. McCullough, who is due home late tonight, started the game at playing second base and batting leadoff, drawing a walk to get on base early on:
His mom Jane Muxen McCullough says, “This is something he has been working for since he first picked up a bat.” We asked her what he had to say about the victory, and she relayed this quote: “It was the best experience of my life with the best teammates I could imagine. Representing the USA, the team felt we had targets on our back. We embraced that feeling and stuck together as a unit, and because of that we are gold medalists.” Morgan is the only Northwest resident on the team, whose roster you can see here.
One last score to report from the first weekend of local high-school football: The Chief Sealth International High School Seahawks were on the road against the Garfield Bulldogs, at Southeast Athletic Complex on Saturday night. Final score: Garfield 48, Sealth 13. Next up for the Seahawks: Another road game, vs. King’s Way Christian in Vancouver (WA) at 6 pm Friday. (Thanks to Mel for the photo!)

The kickoff weekend for local high-school football continues. At West Seattle Stadium this afternoon, Seattle Lutheran sent the Mary Knight Owls back to Elma with a 60-8 loss. It was a shutout until the end of the third quarter, when the Owls scored their only points. Otherwise, the Saints’ defense kept the Owls on their side of the 50-yard line for the entire afternoon.
Lutheran junior JJ Young (#23, above) scored three touchdowns, one on the very first play of the game.
Also scoring TD’s – junior QB Isaiah Dowding-Albrecht (#3, above), sophomore wide receiver Joe Meehan, sophomore linebacker Matthew Smith (who recovered an end-zone fumble), and senior running back Hawkins Ehret (#7, below):
Next up for SLHS is Oakville, 2 pm next Saturday (September 12th) at WS Stadium (4432 35th SW).

Just two weeks ago, we reported on West Seattle High School senior Morgan McCullough being chosen to join the USA Baseball 18U National Team, which was getting ready to defend the world title it won two years ago. Today, the team is hours away from the gold-medal game at that tournament in Osaka, Japan. They beat Canada 9-5 early today (the game started at 2 am our time) in a “tune-up” for the title game, which they earned their way into via a 6-5 victory over Cuba the day before. The title game is against Japan, at 2 am our time Sunday morning (aka, really late tonight) and you’ll be able to watch it live online if you’re up – via this Ustream channel, or check in on play-by-play tweets here. McCullough is the only player from the Northwest on the national-team roster.

High-school-football season starts on the peninsula tonight. West Seattle High School hosts Lindbergh (from Renton) at 7 pm at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle). There’s also a game at West Seattle Stadium (4470 35th SW) – Seattle Prep hosting Bothell, scheduled to have started at 5 pm.
Then tomorrow, Seattle Lutheran plays at WS Stadium at 1:30 pm, hosting Mary Knight (from Elma); Chief Sealth International High School has a 7 pm Saturday game on the road vs. Garfield at Southeast Athletic Complex.
