Next week, they play Wednesday and Friday games again, but this time it starts on the road, Wednesday at Rainier Beach, and they’re back home at 6:30 pm Friday (January 23rd) against Ballard.

Close one Friday night for head coach Keffrey Fazio‘s West Seattle High School boys-varsity team, losing at home to Bainbridge by just three points, 50-47. Top scorer for the Wildcats: #23, Andre Moore, with 12 points:

Next with 10 points, #1, Nate Pryor:

#2, Melvin Arrington, followed with 8:

At the very end of the third quarter, West Seattle lost the lead via a buzzer-beater by Bainbridge senior Blake Swanson (#4, with Wildcats #3 Tyler Lenzie below).

As chronicled here and elsewhere, it’s been a dream season so far for the West Seattle High School girls-varsity basketball team, and you have two chances in the next three nights to cheer them on at home. First – they’ve been busy between games; head coach Sonya Elliott shares the team photo above and reports that the program “had a special visit from self-defense instructor Sheri Hashemi (International Krav Maga Seattle), teaching them about Krav Maga and self-defense skills.” Now, to their two home games before week’s end: Tonight, Cleveland visits WSHS, 7:30 pm varsity/5:45 pm JV; on Friday, Bainbridge comes to town, 6:30 pm varsity/3:30 pm JV (as part of a four-game bill with the WSHS/Bainbridge boys). The WSHS gym is on the south side of campus at 3000 California SW.

We know, it’s all about football tonight. But if you have a young baseball player in your house, take note that West Seattle Baseball sent word this week that its spring-season registration is open, for 4- to 19-year-olds:

West Seattle Baseball hosts several summer all-star tournaments in West Seattle featuring some of the top teams in Western Washington.
West Seattle Baseball welcomes players of all experience levels. West Seattle Baseball is proudly affiliated with the national PONY Baseball organization. Our goals include teaching the fundamentals of baseball and good sportsmanship while building a sense of community among players and their families. After someone asked whether the huge “12th Flag” would go up at West Seattle Corporate Center before tomorrow’s Seahawks-Panthers playoff game, we went over to Delridge/Andover and found it flying! Well, “flying” is a bit of an exaggeration – not much breeze this foggy morning – but we stood around, camera ready, until it caught a hint of movement.
BACKSTORY: The 1,500-square-foot, Tacoma-made flag first went up last year, days before the Seahawks’ Super Bowl win.
P.S. If you’re downtown, you are invited to cheer as King County Executive (and native West Seattleite) Dow Constantine raises the 12th Man flag at the King County Administration Building at 12:12 pm today – 500 4th Avenue.
12:24 PM UPDATE: The aforementioned downtown flag-raising was accomplished with the help of the executive’s baby daughter Sabrina – here’s the video just tweeted via @kcexec:
(If you are having trouble getting that to play – you can view it on its host site, here.)
Another win last night for the West Seattle High School girls-varsity basketball team, 61-46 over visiting Holy Names Academy (here’s what our partners at The Seattle Times wrote). And that’s not the only news as their strong season continues. Head Coach Sonya Elliott tells us they finished third at the recent MaxPreps Holiday Tournament in Palm Springs, with Lydia Giomi and Lexi Ioane chosen for the All-Tournament Team; the two also led their team last night, with 20 points and 9 rebounds for Giomi, 13 points and 10 rebounds for Ioane, who also was featured recently as a KING 5 Western Washington Girls Basketball Performer of the Week.
UP NEXT: The WSHS girls are on the road Friday night at Eastside Catholic; your next chance to cheer for them at home is Wednesday (January 14th) at 7:30 pm, vs. visiting Cleveland.
School’s back in session and high-school basketball is back in all-out mode:
That reader-contributed video clip shows a big basket by Chief Sealth International High School‘s #22, senior Hafid Yassin, in the Seahawks’ home loss to visiting Garfield tonight, 96-55.

The Bulldogs got out ahead early, 30-14 by the end of the first quarter, and Sealth was unable to catch up.

(Sealth’s #1 Khaleef Griffin and #12 LJ Burns)
The Garfield girls will be at Sealth tomorrow (Wednesday) night, with the varsity game at 7:30 pm. The Sealth boys’ next game is on the road at Seattle Prep, 8 pm Friday.

5:50 PM: Scores are in from two home basketball games for Seattle Lutheran High School this afternoon – both teams played Shoreline Christian, with the boys winning 73-24, the girls losing, 57-42.

We tweeted from both games via @wsblive.
ADDED 11:34 PM: Photos, and toplines: In the boys’ game, the Saints outlasted Shoreline thanks to a deeper bench and numerous 3-pointers, mostly by freshman Josh Meyer (top photo) and junior Xavier Turner (#11, below), who was the night’s top scorer with 31 points.

In the girls’ game, Shoreline had advantages in both speed and height. The Saints were led by junior Abbi Sanders (below) with 24 points, including four 3-pointers.

Next up for SeaLu, according to the school calendar – both teams have games at Christian Faith School in Federal Way next Tuesday night (January 6).
From West Seattle High School boys’ basketball head coach Keffrey Fazio:
The West Seattle HS Boys Basketball team traveled to the Mountlake Terrace Holiday Basketball Classic on Monday and Tuesday for a 4-team tournament.
The Wildcats went 2-0 and won their pool. WSHS beat host school Mountlake Terrace on Monday and then beat Bellingham on Tuesday for the bracket championship.
WSHS was led by sophomore point guard Nate Pryor, who was tournament player of the game, scoring 28 points in the first contest, then scoring 23 in the second. He had help from senior Andre Moore, and juniors Carter Golgart, Chaaka Trahan, and Melvin Arrington. Sophomore Akili Kasim played well off the bench for the Wildcats.
West Seattle resumes Metro League play Tuesday, January 6th, at home against O’Dea. JV 5:30 pm, Varsity 7:00 pm.

If you’re going to tomorrow’s 10 am Polar Bear Swim at Alki Beach – watch for the softball umpires who are doing it again this year. Leading the way will be West Seattle’s Kayleen Dunson, who shares the news of a big achievement in her storied career as an ump:
Kayleen Dunson, the Umpire in Chief for Seattle/Tacoma, and West Seattle resident, just earned ELITE Umpire Status from USA/ASA Softball.
Less than 1 percent of the 30,000 USA/ASA softball umpires in the country earn their Elite Umpire Status. It is the highest award for an American umpire. Kayleen joins just 14 other umpires in the Seattle area who have earned their Elite.
Only umpires who have earned their Elite Status are eligible to apply to become certified International Softball Federation (ISF) umpires – and only ISF umpires can work international championships – like the Olympics!
Kayleen will try for her ISF certification this July. And it’s looking like softball may make it’s way back into the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Could she be selected to represent the United States there? It’s possible.
But Kayleen isn’t about the glory. “I do this because I’m having so much fun,” she said. She and about 15 other softball umpires will be “Polar Plunging” at Alki on New Year’s Day. “Umpiring is a family – like any family we have the ‘Steady Eddies’ and the ‘Crazies.’ On New Years Day a bunch of my like-minded ‘Crazies’ join me for a Plunge into Puget Sound – in full uniform. It’s a bond as strong as any family bond.”
Seattle needs about 50 new Softball Umpires this year. If you are interested, check out their website at www.smsua.org – or contact “Krazy Kayleen” at umpkayleen@outlook.com.
Kayleen adds an update about two people who signed up after past reports here: “West Seattle umpires Shani Neamen and Mike Katz both umpired their first National Championship Tournament this past summer. They did awesome!”

Get out of the house and into the bleachers! In the Menashe Gym at Seattle Lutheran High School, the Saints’ Alumni Basketball Tournament is under way for a few more hours.

Five teams’ worth of players signed up for tonight’s tournament. There’s parking right across the street from the gym, 41st and Genesee on the north end of The Junction.
P.S. Next up for the current Saints basketball teams – they host Shoreline Christian on Saturday, January 3rd, with the girls-varsity game at 2:30 pm and the boys-varsity game at 4 pm.

West Seattle High School boys’ basketball head coach Keffrey Fazio shares the photo – more than 60 participants at this week’s Holiday Mini-Camp! As for the team, they’re off until a tournament at Mountlake Terrace High School next week.
Congratulations to coach Sonya Elliott and her undefeated West Seattle High School girls-varsity basketball team – the new Seattle Times (WSB partner) rankings have them at #6 in the state (3A division). Next up for the Wildcats, an after-Christmas tournament in California; they’re going to Palm Springs for games Friday, December 26th, through Tuesday, December 30th (here’s the schedule). Their next game in Seattle is at home on Wednesday, January 7th, vs. Holy Names.

Thanks to Kimberly Pena for sharing that photo – it’s her brother Brian Pena and 11 of his friends who flew to Arizona for tonight’s Seahawks game, a 35-6 win over the Cardinals! The Hawks are playoff-bound again this year – but first, one more regular-season game to get through, vs. the visiting St. Louis Rams, 1:25 pm next Sunday.

Since summertime, we’ve been reporting on the new local junior roller derby league, Southside Revolution. Tonight, a milestone – their first bout! As previewed here earlier this week, the hew league hosted teams from NWO Junior Roller Derby in Chilliwack, B.C.. We happened to stop by Southgate Roller Rink during a warmup period.
In the fluorescent green shirts are members of the Rebels, one of the first two SSR teams (the other, the Cadets). They bouted with the NWO league’s Honey Badgers and TNT. Don’t know yet how it turned out, but keep an eye on the Southside Revolution Facebook page for that and for info on your next chance to cheer them on.
