Ballard visited West Seattle High School on Friday night:
The Wildcat girls’ sizzling season (13-2) continued with another win, 57-33. Leading scorer (top photo), Emily Fiso with 16. Lydia Giomi was next with 12, then 10 from Izzy Turk (updated photo below):
Lexi Ioane had to sit out the second half with an iced ankle after a pileup toward the end of the first half, but head coach Sonya Elliott expects she’ll be OK for next week.
The WSHS boys-varsity team closed out the night with a victory, too – 47-35:

Head coach Keffrey Fazio‘s varsity team is now at 9-7 on the year.
For their first games next week, the Wildcat varsity teams will be at Bishop Blanchet – 7:30 pm Tuesday for the boys, 7:30 pm Wednesday for the girls.
West Seattle’s two biggest high schools had full slates of basketball home games Friday night. At Chief Sealth International High School, the Seahawks hosted Lakeside. First, the girls-varsity game:
Lakeside went away with the win 78-46, over head coach Katie Jo Maris‘s Seahawks:
Allison Hadaway and Sydney Thomas had 12 points each as top Sealth scorers.
In the nightcap, the Sealth boys stayed close for the first quarter and then Lakeside started to widen the gap.

Final score, Lakeside 74, Sealth 57, for head coach Colin Slingsby and the boys’ squad. LJ Burns led Sealth scoring with 14. They play at Ingraham on Tuesday night, 7:30 pm; the girls will be at the same school, same time, on Wednesday night.

The signs of spring are starting to show up – like this one: If you know you’re going to participate in the West Seattle 5K Run/Walk this year, there’s an incentive to early registration, as announced by race director Jeff Mensing:

With a week and a half until the Super Bowl, Seattle vs. New England team-spirit contests abound. Here’s one you can join while not only showing your love for the Seahawks, but also your love for your down-and-out neighbors. From Tibbetts United Methodist Church (WSB sponsor), here’s how you can get involved in a Seattle vs. New England food drive!
Since the Seahawks are repeating a trip to the Super Bowl, the Seattle-area United Methodist Churches are repeating a challenge to a food drive contest – this year to New England. Tibbetts UMC is a drop-off site and food will go to the West Seattle and White Center Food Banks.
Whoever has the highest number of donations of dry goods or money at midnight on Super Bowl Sunday will be declared the winner. In this contest, EVERYONE wins, since our spirited competition supports local people in need. All food & money will be donated to local food banks. For details on how/where to donate, go here.
You can also donate online at unitedinblue.org (where you’ll also find out about participating churches in other areas). Once again we expect that many churches in Washington will participate since our Seahawks have such a huge fan base! Monetary donations made online will count towards the contest, with donations going to Northwest Harvest. We’ll beat New England in football AND in generosity!

Congratulations to Bill Fry, vice president of administration for West Seattle Soccer Club, honored as national Administrator of the Year award by U.S. Youth Soccer. WSSC’s Tim McMonigle explains, “Over the past year, he had moved up by winning at the club, association, district, state, region, and now the national level. This is a huge honor, and continues our recent successes at the national level with others from our club that have represented our club and association very well.” As the announcement notes, while Fry was WSSC president, the number of registered players nearly doubled.

Play ball! Registration is open for the 2015 spring season of West Seattle Girls Softball. From the official announcement sent to us:
WSGS is a local nonprofit organization and is fueled by its dedicated volunteers. WSGS goals are to ensure that its players have the best possible experience playing fast-pitch softball. We hope to build both team sportsmanship and individual sportsmanship, all while having fun. We teach the basics and build skills as players continue with the program. WSGS looks forward to giving all girls ages 6-15 who are interested in learning the game a chance to build self-esteem and learn about sportsmanship. We try to place players onto teams that will be most beneficial to their needs. No previous experience necessary. Registration is open through February. The WSGS season starts with practices in March and runs through June.

Trileigh captioned it “Hailquake“; we’ve also heard it dubbed the “Hail Mary” moment! It followed – after a bit of a time gap – one burst of thunder that coincided with the Seahawks’ big comeback. Earlier, John Bartell caught this sunbreak with a rainbow (promise of victory?):
Last but not at all least – this isn’t in West Seattle but does have a local link. Jim Winder, mastermind of the West Seattle Lights/Helmstetler Family Christmas Spectacular, has a light show in Maple Valley and says it’s 100 percent Seahawks-themed, continuing nightly through the Super Bowl. He shared this clip of “Hawktown Funk”:

Second home win in three nights for the West Seattle High School girls-varsity team last night, more than tripling what visiting Bainbridge could manage, 76-25. Four Wildcats scored in double digits, led by #4, Lydia Giomi, with 20; 17 points were from #32, Emily Fiso:
#3, Izzy Turk, was third with 14 points (including four 3-pointers), followed by #30, Lexi Ioane (below, behind head varsity coach Sonya Elliott):
The Wildcats continue to lead their division.

Next week, they play Wednesday and Friday games again, but this time it starts on the road, Wednesday at Rainier Beach, and they’re back home at 6:30 pm Friday (January 23rd) against Ballard.

At the very end of the third quarter, West Seattle lost the lead via a buzzer-beater by Bainbridge senior Blake Swanson (#4, with Wildcats #3 Tyler Lenzie below).
From there, the Spartans held the lead throughout the 4th quarter, ahead by as much as five points, finally winning by three. The Wildcats are now 7-6 overall and are on the road until Friday (January 23rd), when they’ll face Ballard at home.

As chronicled here and elsewhere, it’s been a dream season so far for the West Seattle High School girls-varsity basketball team, and you have two chances in the next three nights to cheer them on at home. First – they’ve been busy between games; head coach Sonya Elliott shares the team photo above and reports that the program “had a special visit from self-defense instructor Sheri Hashemi (International Krav Maga Seattle), teaching them about Krav Maga and self-defense skills.” Now, to their two home games before week’s end: Tonight, Cleveland visits WSHS, 7:30 pm varsity/5:45 pm JV; on Friday, Bainbridge comes to town, 6:30 pm varsity/3:30 pm JV (as part of a four-game bill with the WSHS/Bainbridge boys). The WSHS gym is on the south side of campus at 3000 California SW.

Registration for the West Seattle Little League is open! WSLL is currently registering players for its Spring Baseball season. Divisions include T-Ball, Coach-Pitch, Rookies, Minors, Majors, 50/70 and Juniors. Please visit westseattlelittleleague.com and click on the “Register Now” button to register your player.
You will find additional information regarding WSLL area boundaries, division ages and descriptions on the website. Register before January 30th to avoid a late registration fee. Documentation night will be held on January 27. Tryouts for Minor and Major divisions will be held on March 1st. Rookie League assessment — new this season — will be held on March 8th.

We know, it’s all about football tonight. But if you have a young baseball player in your house, take note that West Seattle Baseball sent word this week that its spring-season registration is open, for 4- to 19-year-olds:
West Seattle Baseball is a 100% volunteer organization dedicated to teaching kids the game of baseball and giving them opportunities to get out on the diamond. In addition to regular season play, all kids ages 7 and older participate in post-season tournaments. Those kids wanting to continue playing have opportunities to play baseball well into the summer in programs such as All Star programs for ages 8-12 years old as well as summer recreation programs including the West Seattle Crush at the Pee Wee fields.
West Seattle Baseball hosts several summer all-star tournaments in West Seattle featuring some of the top teams in Western Washington.
West Seattle Baseball welcomes players of all experience levels. West Seattle Baseball is proudly affiliated with the national PONY Baseball organization. Our goals include teaching the fundamentals of baseball and good sportsmanship while building a sense of community among players and their families. Practices begin in March, and the West Seattle Baseball regular season runs from the beginning of April to early June. You can register today at westseattlebaseball.com.
After someone asked whether the huge “12th Flag” would go up at West Seattle Corporate Center before tomorrow’s Seahawks-Panthers playoff game, we went over to Delridge/Andover and found it flying! Well, “flying” is a bit of an exaggeration – not much breeze this foggy morning – but we stood around, camera ready, until it caught a hint of movement.
BACKSTORY: The 1,500-square-foot, Tacoma-made flag first went up last year, days before the Seahawks’ Super Bowl win.
P.S. If you’re downtown, you are invited to cheer as King County Executive (and native West Seattleite) Dow Constantine raises the 12th Man flag at the King County Administration Building at 12:12 pm today – 500 4th Avenue.

Another win last night for the West Seattle High School girls-varsity basketball team, 61-46 over visiting Holy Names Academy (here’s what our partners at The Seattle Times wrote). And that’s not the only news as their strong season continues. Head Coach Sonya Elliott tells us they finished third at the recent MaxPreps Holiday Tournament in Palm Springs, with Lydia Giomi and Lexi Ioane chosen for the All-Tournament Team; the two also led their team last night, with 20 points and 9 rebounds for Giomi, 13 points and 10 rebounds for Ioane, who also was featured recently as a KING 5 Western Washington Girls Basketball Performer of the Week.
UP NEXT: The WSHS girls are on the road Friday night at Eastside Catholic; your next chance to cheer for them at home is Wednesday (January 14th) at 7:30 pm, vs. visiting Cleveland.
School’s back in session and high-school basketball is back in all-out mode:
That reader-contributed video clip shows a big basket by Chief Sealth International High School‘s #22, senior Hafid Yassin, in the Seahawks’ home loss to visiting Garfield tonight, 96-55.
The Bulldogs got out ahead early, 30-14 by the end of the first quarter, and Sealth was unable to catch up.

The Garfield girls will be at Sealth tomorrow (Wednesday) night, with the varsity game at 7:30 pm. The Sealth boys’ next game is on the road at Seattle Prep, 8 pm Friday.

5:50 PM: Scores are in from two home basketball games for Seattle Lutheran High School this afternoon – both teams played Shoreline Christian, with the boys winning 73-24, the girls losing, 57-42.

ADDED 11:34 PM: Photos, and toplines: In the boys’ game, the Saints outlasted Shoreline thanks to a deeper bench and numerous 3-pointers, mostly by freshman Josh Meyer (top photo) and junior Xavier Turner (#11, below), who was the night’s top scorer with 31 points.
In the girls’ game, Shoreline had advantages in both speed and height. The Saints were led by junior Abbi Sanders (below) with 24 points, including four 3-pointers.
Next up for SeaLu, according to the school calendar – both teams have games at Christian Faith School in Federal Way next Tuesday night (January 6).
