SPORTS: One local high-school team still standing in basketball playoffs

The West Seattle High School boys are the only local high-school basketball team still in the playoffs, after both Chief Sealth International High School teams lost win-or-go-home games tonight: The girls lost to/at Cedarcrest 51-37, while the boys lost to/at Lindbergh, 73-50. The WSHS boys play Garfield at 3:30 pm tomorrow (Friday, February 21) at Bellevue College (3000 Landerholm Circle SE) – winner to state, loser out.

BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS: Victories for both Chief Sealth IHS teams

Reporting for West Seattle Blog

Both Chief Sealth International High School basketball teams played must-win district-tournament games at home Tuesday night.

After the CSIHS girls’ basketball team’s tough loss to Foster High School in the opening round of the tournament, head coach Mario Martinez decided to play up-tempo ball from the initial possession of their game. The Seahawks deployed a full-court man-to-man press the entire first half and wreaked havoc on their opponent, the Lindbergh Eagles (Renton). Sealth forced multiple turnovers and kept Lindbergh from setting up their offense.

Lindbergh tried to stop Sealth’s Alysse Bland (above), but she had little problem shaking off defenders. Sealth’s smothering team defense, along with a couple of key three pointers from Bethel Bisrat and Keimani Proctor-Mills’ dynamic rebounding helped the Seahawks build a 29-20 lead at the half.

At the start of the second half, Sealth started racking up fouls that gave Lindbergh bonus free throws with over 3 minutes left in the third quarter. The free throws kept Lindbergh in the game as they cut Sealth’s lead to three heading into the 4th quarter. But Bland continued driving and scoring.

Presley Williams (above) drained two timely 3-pointers and the team iced the win 50-37. After the game, Coach Martinez was proud of the determination of the team. “If we keep playing with intensity and energy, we can make it through to the State tournament.” Next up for the Sealth girls is an away game at Cedarcrest High School in Duvall on Thursday at 7:00 pm.

Now to the boys’ game:

After a heartbreaking 69-68 loss to Renton High School on Saturday. the Sealth boys’ team played a must-win game in Tuesday night’s Class 2 District Tournament game against the Evergreen Wolverines from White Center.

After head coach Ja’Lyn Combs made an early adjustment to address Evergreen’s defensive press, the outcome of the game was never really in doubt. The Sealth boys combined outside shooting with effective inside play and led by a score of 32-24 at the half.

The Seahawks went on a quick run to start the 2nd half by forcing turnovers and making quick fast-break points. Sealth players repeatedly beat defenders to the basket and Chase Valdez (above) poured in buckets from the outside. By the end of the game, the Evergreen defense was worn down as the Seahawks notched an 83-57 win.

Chase Valdez led the team with 19 points and Taj Washington (above) contributed 13. The team moves on to play an away game on Thursday night at either Foster or Lindbergh.

Friday night, the Chief Sealth International High School girls’ basketball team played the opening game of the District 2A tournament against Foster High School (Tukwila) at the Sealth gym.

The Seahawks had to play without one of their leading scorers and shot blockers, as Fahima Mohamed was unavailable due to injury. Early in the game, the play was a bit sloppy as both teams turned the ball over repeatedly.

At the start of the 2nd quarter, Sealth’s Mackenna Mack (above) made some nice moves to get free underneath for a couple of quick buckets. But Foster was able to capitalize on some defensive lapses on the baseline and strong three-point shooting to take a 33-16 lead at the half.

Down by double digits, Sealth stepped up the defensive intensity in the second half. The Seahawks’ Alysse Bland (above) put on an offensive clinic, combining drives to the basket with deadly three-point shooting. Each time Sealth went on a run, Foster answered back with a clutch 3-pointer. Late in the game, Bland and Bethel Bisrat drained back-to-back three pointers to pull Sealth within 5 points of the lead, but the Seahawks ran out of time, losing by a final score of 61-54. Alysse Bland finished with 20 points, while Mackenna Mack and Hannah Mueller contributed 8 points each.

The District Tournament has a double-elimination format. Head coach Mario Martinez‘s Metro-champion Sealth girls could still make the State Tournament by winning out in the consolation bracket. They will play again on Tuesday night at 7 pm at a location to be determined.

BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS: Postseason continues for local high schools’ girls, boys teams

All four local high-school varsity basketball teams are still in postseason play – the West Seattle HS boys play Blanchet at Franklin HS at 7 tonight in a district-qualifier game, the Chief Sealth IHS girls host Foster at 5:30 pm Friday night, (added) after winning the Metro 2A tournament with a 52-33 win over Cleveland Tuesday night:

Thanks to Sealth head coach Mario Martinez for the update and photo!

Meantime, the WSHS girls and CSIHS boys both have TBD games at 7 pm Saturday. The WSHS girls played last night, and WSB contributor Tracy Burrows was there:

(Alya Moore leads the fast break)

Wednesday night at the Cleveland High School gym, the West Seattle High School girls’ basketball team lost to Seattle Prep, 41-31, in the Metro League 3A Championship Tournament. The West Seattle Wildcats hung tough against a team with more height and experience at nearly every position. Seattle Prep pressured the ball effectively during much of the first half, causing turnovers and limiting West Seattle’s opportunities to execute their half-court offense. Prep led by a score of 28-14 at the half.

(Colby Timmons shooting from the line)

Scoring opportunities opened up for the Wildcats in the second half, but the shots just wouldn’t go in. The team played the entire game with a 6-person rotation, and fatigue may have contributed to an off-night of shooting. Still, the West Seattle girls played with tremendous intensity the entire game and pulled to within 10 in the fourth quarter after trailing by 15 at the end of the third.

(Seneca Lucas goes up for a shot)

This year’s West Seattle squad is a young team, with two freshmen and a sophomore as members of the starting five. Freshman Alya Moore led the scoring for the Wildcats, with 13 points and senior Colby Timmons racked up 10. Both teams will move on to the District Tournament, which starts on Saturday, February 15. West Seattle will play at either Inglemoor or Mercer Island at 7 pm on Saturday. The full District Tournament brackets will be finalized Friday night.

VIDEO: West Seattle HS softball team scores big with annual clinics for younger players

(WSB video/photos)

Air: A few degrees above freezing. Hearts: Warm. That was the situation on the upper field at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex this morning, as West Seattle High School softball players led their annual preseason clinic for younger players, ages 7-13. First session was for the youngest participants, ending with a spirited round of base-running (as also shown in our video above):

The players instructed their students in other skills including hitting and throwing. Each of the two groups had takers for every spot – more than 30 per session:

Along with opportunities to practice coaching and mentoring skills, the clinics were fundraisers for the team. Every participant got this special T-shirt:

The clinics were originally organized four seasons ago by player Kamil Ygnacio, who has since graduated – her sister Kaila Ygnacio took the ball and ran with it:

So have newer players’ parents, so the clinics will carry on even as the roster changes over the years. This year’s group stopped down for a players-only group photo while awaiting the next group’s arrival:

(L-R: Hannah, Daeja, Stella, Alice, Julia, Kenzie, Lila, Violet, Molly, Kaila, Marina)

They’ll be starting play in less than a month – spring sports start in early March.

SPORTS: West Seattle HS vs. Chief Sealth IHS basketball, report #2: Boys’ varsity

(WSB photos by Jason Grotelueschen)

This year’s night for crosstown-rivalry basketball ended with the boys’ varsity faceoff, as Chief Sealth International High School hosted West Seattle High School on Monday. This one was never close. The Wildcats got out to a 9-1 lead with five of those points contributed by #0, senior Alex Pierce:

Due to his antics among others, Sealth spent a fair amount of time at the foul-shot line, but were fairly cold from there in the early going. The first quarter ended with West Seattle head coach Fred Wilson‘s team up 21-9.

By halftime, they’d widened the lead to 40-17. Sealth tried to put the brakes on them but didn’t have much luck.

About the only bright spot for Sealth and head coach JaLyn Combs in this half was better luck at the foul line.

Final score was West Seattle 84, Chief Sealth 37. The Wildcats (7-12) host Nathan Hale tonight (Tuesday) at 7:30 pm; this was the last scheduled game for Sealth (3-16).

Monday night, Chief Sealth International High School hosted West Seattle High School for the annual crosstown-rivalry basketball games. First up were the girls-varsity teams, who kept things close in the first half.

The Wildcats were only one point up on the Seahawks, 19-18, when the halftime buzzer sounded, after a second quarter full of seesawing. That was the biggest thing Sealth fans had to cheer about all night.

Then WSHS head coach Darnell Taylor‘s young team – only one senior – came roaring out of the locker room and started piling up the points.

WSHS’s top scorer in the game, #10, sophomore Seneca Lucas, hit two buckets before the first minute of the second half was over. Then that lone senior, WSHS #20 Colby Timmons, sank a three. The third quarter was more than half over by the time Sealth finally got back on the board, a three from CSIHS’s leading scorer on the night, #44, senior Fahima Mohamed.

At the end of the third, Sealth head coach Mario Martinez‘s team was still at a single-digit deficit, 35-26.

but WSHS resumed piling on the points in the fourth quarter, with a hefty helping of foul shots.

The final score was West Seattle 58, Chief Sealth 29. Next up, the Wildcats (10-9) host Lakeside at 7:30 pm Wednesday, while the Seahawks (9-11) visit Rainier Beach at 7:30 pm Friday.

MLK Day is a popular date to showcase high-school basketball in Seattle and throughout Washington. This afternoon, the West Seattle High School boys team matched up with Class 4A Kentridge High School in the MLK Day Classic Tournament at Seattle Pacific University.

The game started with cold shooting from both teams, with the first quarter ending with the Kentridge Chargers leading 10-9. In the second quarter, West Seattle found a groove by cutting down on turnovers and hitting key shots.

(WSHS #3, Sully Pond)

The Wildcats led by 5 at the half, 28-23. Halftime included a brief presentation on Dr. King’s legacy with a reminder to fans to consider how we can put hope into action to make the world a better place.

After the half, the lead seesawed back and forth for much of the third and fourth quarters. During a late game timeout, Wildcats Coach Fred Wilson exhorted his team to play with energy and pound the ball inside on offense. The team responded and with less than a minute to go, Wes Armstrong drove to the bucket, was fouled, and made a key free throw that gave the Wildcats a 3-point lead. West Seattle prevailed by a final score of 51-48. Duncan Monnin led with 13 points, followed by Alex Pierce and Tyce Sayles with 9 each.

No rest for the Wildcat boys – next game is at 7:30 pm tomorrow (Tuesday, January 21), at Eastside Catholic.

Friday night, the Chief Sealth International High School girls and boys basketball teams hosted Metro League powerhouse Bishop Blanchet HS.

(Chief Sealth’s Fahima Mohamed)

The Blanchet girls came into the game with an undefeated record in Metro League play. The Sealth Seahawks kept the game tight through two quarters, trailing by a score of 23-20 at the half. Blanchet turned up the pressure in the third quarter, creating several Sealth turnovers that led to easy fast break buckets for the Bears. The Sealth girls dialed up their intensity in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t overcome the Blanchet lead, falling by a 47-33 final score. Fahima Mohamed and Alysse Bland led the scoring for the Seahawks with 17 and 10 points respectively.

(Chief Sealth’s Chase Valdez)

In the nightcap contest, the Sealth boys kept pace with the Blanchet Bears for the first quarter of play. Sealth sophomore Adnaan Mohamed dazzled the crowd with outside shooting and acrobatic scoring drives. In the second quarter, the Blanchet boys put on a shooting clinic, draining threes one after another to lead by 42-25 at the half. The rest of the game, both teams rotated their lineups to give the bench more playing time.

Sealth never gave up and narrowed the deficit to 10 points with a nifty run late in the 4th quarter. Blanchet improved their overall record to 12-3 with their 70-60 win.

NEXT: Sealth is on the road against Seattle Academy next week – boys varsity at 7:30 pm Tuesday, girls varsity at 7:30 pm Wednesday.

SPORTS: Chief Sealth IHS hosts midseason wrestling tournament

Story and photos by Tracy Burrows
Reporting for West Seattle Blog

Wednesday night was a big night for high school wrestling in West Seattle, as four Metro League rivals took to the mats at the Chief Sealth International High School gym. For this mid-season tournament, Chief Sealth and West Seattle each matched up against O’Dea and Nathan Hale high schools. The individual matches were intense and exciting as the teams start the home stretch toward the state tournament in late February.

Chief Sealth started off the evening on a high note, crushing the O’Dea Fighting Irish 53-14. This was a satisfying victory over a team that has given Sealth trouble in the past. West Seattle battled hard against O’Dea but came up short 30-56. Nathan Hale did not field enough wrestlers for the results to be official, but both West Seattle and Sealth handily defeated the Raiders wrestlers.

Sealth coach Maurice Dolberry said his team is peaking just at the right moment. He said the boys’ team has the talent and drive to achieve the school’s best ever showing at the state tournament. Girls’ wrestling is one of the fastest-growing high school sports, and the Sealth girls are poised to do well at State too.

West Seattle coach Shon Sweet said that his team wrestled really well, and he expects to have a handful of wrestlers that make the state tournament. Sweet is working on growing the West Seattle team and says, “Wrestling is for everyone. No matter your size or body type, whether you’re a boy or girl, there’s a place for you on the team.” That spirit of inclusion was fully evident at the tournament, with boys and girls from lightweight to heavyweight cheering each other on from the sidelines.

That’s one of our clips from Southside Revolution Junior Roller Derby‘s season-opening bout at Southgate Roller Rink three weeks ago. The skaters are now just a week away from the season’s second home bout, set for next Saturday night (January 18) at the White Center rink. If you haven’t watched roller derby before, what you see in our videos is mostly what’s referred to as “jamming” – trying to block one or more skaters from getting through. (Next bout, in fact, will be “Battle of the Jams.”) In keeping with longstanding roller-derby tradition, you’ll notice that the skaters all have derby names, often puns – we noted a few while watching that first bout, like Acid Reign, Omar-geddon, Aya the Hurricane.

Some of the referees have derby names too – we noted Millennium FoulCon. The bouts are scored and announced, and we noted a good crowd of families and other fans watching this one.

Next Saturday night, doors open at Southgate (9646 17th SW) at 4:15 pm, and then you get more than three hours of roller-derby action for your admission fee ($12 adults, $6 kids 6-12, kids 5 and under free). The Southside Revolution Rebels, one of their five teams, are on the East Coast this weekend, competing in Pittsburgh!

CONGRATULATIONS! West Seattle RoadRunners’ success at national cross country championships

Runners from the West Seattle RoadRunners are back from the national championships, with major success, including the 9-10-year-old girls [photo above] repeating as national champions! Here’s a summary courtesy of head coach James Powell:

This past weekend, youth athletes from West Seattle RoadRunners, our local youth running team, competed in the 2024 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Shelbyville, Indiana. 3,175 athletes from all over the country competed in 2-year age group races from 7-8 year olds to 17-18 year olds.

Athletes on this team have represented our community at the National Championships in each of their 8 years since they started in 2017. In that first season, four West Seattle athletes competed at Nationals. This year the team sent 59 runners, its largest and most successful contingency ever and the most athletes from any team in the Pacific Northwest.

The 9-10 year old girls team defended their 2023 National Championship team title taking 1st place again this year. Their top 5 runners finished an astonishing 45 seconds apart. They were led by Everly Haase (15th) and Lanna Caprara (22nd) who earned All-American honors for their top 25 finishes.

The 11-12 year old boys team, led by Gus Kemper (5th overall), became the first boys race team from West Seattle to stand on the National Championships podium, finishing in 3rd place.

The 11-12 girls team finished in 5th place with 3 athletes earning All-American honors: Teagan Kemper (8th), Beau Sitzmann (15th), and Savannah Brondstetter (17th). Amazingly these three girls are barely 11 years old and will be back in the same age group next season as they are joined by members of the 2-time National Champion 9-10 year old team who are aging up.

Kallan Knapp wrapped up the day for our team in style finishing in 9th place in the 17-18 girls race and earning the team’s 7th All-American honor at this year’s meet.

You can learn more about this youth running program by visiting their team website at www.westseattleroadrunners.org and following their team Instagram account @westseattleroadrunners
