Who will win the Huling Bowl trophy this year (and local bragging rights)? The big game between West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School is this Saturday night (October 19th), 7 pm, hosted by WSHS at West Seattle Stadium – and we’ve just received word from WSHS activities director Christina Posten that they’re asking everyone coming to the game to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the West Seattle Food Bank. The fun goes beyond football – it begins with tailgating at 5:30 pm, and you’ll also see both schools’ marching bands in action, in a combined performance at halftime!
At West Seattle Stadium on Saturday night, Seattle Lutheran hosted La Conner, which returned home with the win, 48-0. Injuries had the Saints missing some of their veteran players for this game, and while they had some big defensive moments, scoring proved elusive. Next Saturday, Seattle Lutheran goes to Orcas Island for a 1:30 pm game.

After weeks of road games, the West Seattle High School Wildcats finally played at home Friday night; the band had a whole new look for the occasion. The game went into overtime, and was hard-fought, though visiting Ingraham pulled out the win, 12-6.

The West Seattle High School girls-varsity soccer team keeps rolling on. Thanks again to Karin Beck for photos and an update on the latest game – a 2-0 win over Ingraham on Tuesday afternoon. Karin reports:
Katie DuLong and Lindsey Hage scored goals, and Sarah DuLong was the shutout keeper.

It was Senior Night as well as Homecoming for the Chief Sealth International High School Seahawks as they hosted Franklin on Friday night at Southwest Athletic Complex, ending the night with a 62-34 win.
Homecoming royalty included LeeAndre Dickerson, who scored two TDs, and Allison Steele:
Also with TDs: Alloney Burris (two), Darren Camacho, Brady Crane, Allen Delker, Joe Kilgore, Weston Reed. Crane scored by going the length of the field on the first play. Kilgore had two important plays – running a Franklin fumble in for a touchdown, and late in the game intercepting a Franklin pass, ending Franklin’s best drive of the fourth quarter.
Sealth played the better defensive game.
In the third quarter, they stopped a Franklin drive inside the one-yard line and kept Franklin from getting a touchdown. That blew open what had been 20-20 tie at halftime and let Sealth go on to control the second half.
Next Friday, the Seahawks are on the road – 6 pm at Northeast Athletic Complex (10750 30th NE) vs. Nathan Hale.

At Southeast Athletic Complex Friday night, the Rainier Beach High School Vikings defeated the West Seattle High School Wildcats, 44-28.
The Vikings jumped out to a 6 – 0 lead a mere 23 seconds into the game when they ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. The Wildcats had Elijah Williams (#21) wrapped up in what looked like a tackle, but he had the presence of mind to lateral the ball to Michael McKnight (#10), who went the distance for Rainier Beach.
Despite that shaky start, the Wildcats managed to rally back with two touchdown runs by Carter Golgart (#12) and two 2-point conversions (a run by Fynniecko Glover, #22, and reception by Rob Harrelson, #17) to lead 16 to 12 at the half. Wildcats first half highlights also included an interception by Golgart, a fumble recovery by Jack Mohr (#35), and two blocked extra-point attempts.
Things were looking good for the visiting team, but the Viking offense roared to life in the second half. Rainier Beach racked up 32 unanswered points (including a 47-yard run by Elijah Williams #21) before West Seattle was able to respond.
Late heroics included a touchdown pass from quarterback Rob Harrelson (#17) to Raphael Jackson (#24), an onside kick recovered by Carter Mensing (#5), and a 47-yard touchdown pass from Rob Harrelson (#17) to Yonas Ambaye (#23).
West Seattle’s first home game is next Friday night (October 11th) at 7:00 pm, against Ingraham at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle).

Once again this year, it was more than just the classic crosstown rivalry in Tuesday night’s volleyball showdown between Chief Sealth International High School and visiting West Seattle High School – it was also a battle between the top two teams in their division. After 4 games, the Wildcats emerged with the win, three games to one, but that final game was especially hard fought, point by point:

The rain hadn’t yet returned when hundreds hit the walkway/trail at Alki this morning for the 2013 edition of “Beat the Burn” – the run/walk presented by Port of Seattle Firefighters to raise money for burn survivors. This year, the firefighters ran with everybody else, and behind the runners, there was a sizable group of walkers:
The Port’s Engine 2 sounded the siren that got the event started at 9 am:
And after all the other runners and walkers, one firefighter entered the course, geared up:
A separate fun run for kids was scheduled to follow the main event. The specific beneficiary of Beat the Burn is Camp Eyabsut, a free (thanks to fundraising like this) annual summer-camp experience for hundreds of young Northwest burn survivors.
Chief Sealth International High School‘s cheer squad and mascot kept spirits bright despite also being shut out tonight – a 70-0 loss to Bishop Blanchet at Southwest Athletic Complex.
It was the third shutout win for Blanchet in four games.
Next Friday night (October 4th), it’s Sealth’s homecoming game, vs. Franklin, again at SW Athletic Complex.

West Seattle High School fans arrived in style to cheer on their Wildcats, but unfortunately the Cleveland High School Eagles proved the better team, winning 26-0 tonight at Memorial Stadium downtown.
The Wildcats played tough defense, holding the Eagles to two scores in the first half while blocking both extra-point attempts, but the offense was unable to generate any points.
In the second half, Cleveland scored twice and made a two-point conversion.
Nevertheless, there were some highlights, including an interception by Bailey Wyatt (#50) of a ball jarred loose by Carter Golgart (#12) and fumble recovery by Eric West (#55).
On the offensive there were tough runs by Raphael “Do-E” Jackson (#24), Fynniecko Glover (#22), and Tre Steward (#21).
Next Friday night (October 4th, 7 pm), WSHS visits Rainier Beach at Southeast Athletic Complex.

WSHS’s powerhouse twins had a big role in the win. Katie DuLong scored the goal with an assist from Annie Murphy; Sarah DuLong shut down the Seahawks as the Wildcats’ goalie. Next up, according to the Metro League calendar, WSHS is on the road against Franklin, 3:30 pm Thursday at Genesee Park/Playfield; one day later, on Friday, same time, same place, same team for Sealth.

Coach Al invited his 10-11 Hiawatha Community Center volleyball team (and their families) out to watch the UW Volleyball team play Cal State Northridge (Friday) night. It has been an exciting evening! He is an awesome coach and SPS bus driver. He’s been coaching for over 10 years and it shows. The entire first game was used to explain hits, scoring, positioning, and more! These girls are lucky to have him!

At Memorial Stadium downtown, the West Seattle High School Wildcats defeated the Franklin Quakers 26-12 Friday night to begin league play on a high note.
The grueling, three-hours-and-20-minutes game was marred by eight injury timeouts and countless penalties, yet the team persevered to earn their first win of the season.

[Whether you are golfing or not …] You are invited to join the After Party at 7:00 pm featuring NW garage band Branden Daniel & The Chics, who sound like a “Detroit garage built from a Rolling Stones r&b foundation and the rhythmic supports of classic NW garage staples, The Kingsmen.” Just bring a non-perishable item (or items!) for donation to the West Seattle Food Bank. Non-perishable donations for the food bank will be accepted throughout the weekend at the store.

WSHS girls’ varsity soccer team beat Ingraham 3-0 today in their first league game of the season. Annie Murphy, Olivia Williams, and Lindsey Hage each scored goals for the Wildcats. Next game is a big one against Nathan Hale on Sept. 19: Varsity at 3:30 p.m. at Walt Hundley Playfield, and JV at 3:30 p.m. at Addams Playfield. Go, Wildcats!

After a first-week win, Seattle Lutheran High School‘s football team is now 1-1 following their second game of the season, a 40-0 loss to Lake Roosevelt on Saturday afternoon at West Seattle Stadium. The Saints have another non-conference game next Saturday, hosting Oroville, from Central Washington, at 2:30 pm September 21st.
Thanks to Karen for sharing photos from today’s Sundodger Invitational cross-country meet, which brought hundreds of runners from more than two dozen high schools and colleges (none from West Seattle) to Lincoln Park. These photos are from the high-school-varsity girls’ 5,000-meter race, in which Karen was cheering for niece Rachelle Kline of Auburn-Mountainview HS (in blue):
