ArtsWest’s holiday musical!
ArtsWest presents SNOWED IN (AGAIN) by Corinne Park-Buffelen, music composed by David Taylor Gomes, and directed by Kelly Kitchens. This new holiday musical is a sequel to 2023’s SNOWED IN by Corinne Park-Buffelen and Mathew Wright. The cast features Seattle musical theater stars Lauren Drake (SPRING AWAKENING at The 5th Ave), Ays Garcia (CINDERELLA at Village Theater), Alexander Kilian (SPRING AWAKENING at The 5th Ave), and Brandon Riel (PRIDE AND PREJUDICE at Harlequin Productions). They will be accompanied by Aaron Jin on piano. SNOWED IN (AGAIN) performs at ArtsWest from November 21 – December 22, 2024. Tickets are available online at artswest.org or by phone at (206) 938.0963.
Last year, a new holiday tradition was born as ArtsWest sent four of Seattle’s hottest musical theater stars on a cozy retreat to write the most perfect holiday show the world had ever seen. But when a blizzard hit, tensions rose and the crumpled-up notebook pages began to pile up even faster than the snow. This year, four new stars scramble to remount last year’s holiday hit. With hindsight on their side, the process should be foolproof. What could possibly go wrong?
Inspired by classic holiday TV specials and musicals about putting on a musical, witness this new Seattle theater tradition as four of the city’s most beloved musical theater stars take you on a journey of song, dance, friendship, family, and the true meaning of the holidays.
“It was a fun challenge to reapproach last year’s production and reimagine it for a new cast,” says writer Corinne Park-Buffelen, “We knew we wanted to capture the magic of last year’s musical without doing a remount of last year’s show. I am thrilled with where we arrived!” SNOWED IN (AGAIN) features a mix of holiday classics, audience favorites from last year, and a couple new songs thrown into the mix. Titles include “I’m Happy Being Hosted” by Seattle legend, Rich Gray, along with “Bonita the Sexiest Elf”, and new song “Grampus” by David Taylor Gomes and Corinne Park-Buffelen that will have you rolling laughter and singing along.
SNOWED IN (AGAIN) is all-ages holiday fun. This year, ArtsWest has added Saturday matinees to welcome more families to see the production! “When you can keep four pre-teens, two parents in their 50s, and an 86-year-old grandma glued to their seats, you are obviously doing things right,” remarked longtime patron and volunteer, Arline Borella.
ArtsWest will present SNOWED IN (AGAIN) Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm and Saturday through Sunday at 3pm.

Grief Support Groups
Grief groups are brave and safe spaces where bereaved people can share their stories and speak their loved one’s name without fear of getting advice, platitudes, or being shut out, no matter how long it’s been since their loved one’s passing. Every participant has dedicated time to speak about whatever they’d like, without judgment or interruption. Talking about our deceased loved ones in a supportive environment helps us remember them fully and helps us learn to carry the weight of their loss a little more gently.
These are ongoing, drop-in groups, but space is limited. Because of the sensitive nature of traumatic loss, the Thursday group is open only for those who are traumatic loss survivors. Learn more and register at listeningtogrief.com/groups. Contact Tamara at tamara@listeningtogrief.com with questions.

WEST SEATTLE EVENT REMEMBERS 1914 TRUCE
On Christmas Eve 1914, the guns of World War I fell silent. All along a 500-mile front soldiers wandered into No Man’s Land to meet their enemies, armed only with curiosity and good wishes. The wildcat ceasefire was a spontaneous outbreak of peace in one of the most unlikely places.
2024 is the 110th anniversary of this incredible event. A non-sectarian commemoration of that occasion, and a reflection on peace in our own time, will take place December 23rd at the Highland Park Community of Christ church building (8611 11th Ave SW). Doors will open at 6 pm, with the program starting at 7 pm, ending around 8:30.
The Christmas Truce event will tell the story of the 1914 truce through narrative, pictures, drama and song. The evening will also reflect on the continued meaning of peace for us today. Representatives of several faith traditions and a non-religious representative will offer reflections on the occasion and prayers for peace. We will participate in singing from several traditions, lifting many voices united in one desire. A Readers Theater will read from actual letters by soldiers in 1914 describing the unbelievable night. The evening will also include historical retrospectives and present-day reflections on the events of Christmas Eve 1914.
World War I was the first global conflict, and as such it drew in peoples from different backgrounds, races, languages, cultures, religions, and traditions. In a world now inexorably shaped by globalism and interconnected in commerce and conflict, the impulse for a peace that interrupts the inertia of war is even more important to listen for. At a time of year when things seem most dark, celebrate the hope of more light with neighbors of all kinds.

F3, a free national men’s workout group:
We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.
The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

Annual Christmas Day Christmas Dinner/Potluck for Christmas Orphans at the Dragon House
And by Christmas Orphans, I definitely do not mean “Please sir, Can I have some more” kid orphans, I mean grown ups with not enough family in town, who would like to go out and be social. And let me be clear, if you want to bring your locally adopted family to this event, or friends, or kids, or whomever, this is the event for you and them. There is always room for more people, and more delicious food on the table. (Well, hopefully everyone is vaccinated.)
Thats the Who and the What, now for the When and Where
The when is on Christmas Day Dec 25th. We will open the doors at 3:00PM, and start to dive into the yummy things that people have brought at about 4:00PM. With events at my house, we typically go until people leave as conversations are awesome (often as late as 11:00pm).
The where is that I’m at “The Dragon House” 5284 44th Ave SW (on the corner of 44th and Brandon in West Seattle). You can tell when you get here because of the large life sized sculptures in the yard, and down on the planting strip in front is a lifesized sculpture of a naked woman that had the dragon on a leash (she is missing her pet dragon that became only a stump due to a car hitting him). They are carved from trees that grew in those spots. Once you get here there is a set of curved grand entry stairs that are red concrete just to the North of the girl. Come on up, come past the trampoline and up onto the front porch. If you have trouble finding the place, please feel free to call (206) 932-6622 – by voice, it’s a landline in the house, and we can tell you how to get here. As a side note, if you have questions ahead of time, you can also feel free to call. Street parking is usually very easy to find close by.
Important Extra notes:
As far as the food: I’ll provide a brown sugar coated baked ham. Since this is a civilized event, I’ll provide real plates and silverware, the catch here is that you have to do your own dishes. There will be signs up and lots of people can help show you to the kitchen. It’s not really a steep price to pay for a wonderful evening. As far as what you bring, this is christmas dinner, this is the time of year you want to bring something amazing. Bring something you feel proud of sharing. Please DO NOT stop at a convenience store on the way here and grab a bag of chips or a bag of hot dogs… This sentiment is not about spending a lot of money or putting in hours and hours of time, it’s about taking pride in what you are sharing with the community of people you will be having dinner with. I’ve got a couple ovens to heat things in, I’ve got power to make sure a crock pot stays hot, I’ve got serving utensils. Traditionally the quality of food that people bring to events here is very good, thats one of the reasons I keep having events here!
I’ll have the fire lit inside, and there will be great conversations to be had.
This is a no smoking house, and a no animals house. While there are 2 sets of stairs in the front, we have a more level area in back with only one set of stairs, and if you need help getting up them, call and let me know, the guests are always willing to help someone else in.
As usual, I’ll try take some time to give tours of some of the more entertaining features of the house, so if you’ve “always wondered”, well this is a great time to find out. In fact, if you are a budding storyteller and want to give some of the tours, reach out to me as a former housemate who loved giving tours probably won’t be here this year.
It’s been crowded at this event in the past, but this year, I have an empty room on the main floor that we will use as “The Dessert room”, and we will use the upstairs kitchen as “the bar”.
YES! Bring your kids! (As well as friends) I will have “The ultimate wood block set” next to the christmas tree, and if you’ve never seen it, you will be amazed. Heck, most adults are amazed by it. What you should NOT bring is paper plates or utensils or firewood.
There is a climbing wall in the house. And the chimney is set up as a climbing Chimney… If anyone wants to come be the belay climbing instructor, let me know, it’s always good fun for people that have never tried.
With that, I look forward to seeing everyone on Christmas day.
At Toddler Story Time, kids ages 1-3 and their families can enjoy songs, stories, and music.
