HPAC’s September 2025 in-person meeting at Delridge Library
Sep 24 @ 6:30 pm

Join our next HPAC Meeting Sept. 24th, 6:30 pm in-person at the Delridge Library

Hoping folks have been enjoying the terrific Seattle fall weather. We look forward to seeing you for our first in person meeting of the season this Wednesday.

We will have a brief update from SPD on any local public safety issues and work being done by the Unified Care Team.

Folks from the Ridge to River Coalition (R2R) will attend for a conversation about the 2025 West Duwamish Greenbelt Public Survey. The West Duwamish Greenbelt is an amazing natural area in the city. It stretches from the West Seattle Bridge to White Center. The forest is a vital habitat for birds and animals. It offers opportunities for recreation, walking on trails to destinations, or simply enjoying the outdoors close to home.
All community members are invited to share experiences, connections, and ideas for Seattle’s largest remaining forest. You can also take the online survey, visit the R2R website r2rduwamish.org and click the “Share Your Ideas” button. How can we intentionally continue to improve connections and strengthen our communities?

Also talking about connections we will have guests from Reconnect South Park, they ask “Is an Alternate Future possible!?” for bringing together parts of the South Park Community.

The portion of SR-99 running through the neighborhood presents an opportunity for modernization of 1950’s era planning with future-forward reinvestment increasing public safety, mobility, and environmental health.

Other Area Happenings:

The West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails organization reminds all that there are still two more opportunities this season to take a guided hike on some of the fantastic trails already completed. You can find route and schedule information here.

The Highland Park Improvement Club (HPIC) announces their 2025 Membership Drive. Click here for more information on how to join the organization and support the ongoing efforts to bolster community connections and rebuild the HPIC building.

Taste of West Seattle 2025 @ The Hall at Fauntleroy
Sep 25 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

The West Seattle Food Bank is thrilled to announce that iconic singer-songwriter Jim Page will be the special musical guest at this year’s Taste of West Seattle, taking place on Thursday, September 25th at The Hall at Fauntleroy.

Widely regarded as a cornerstone of Seattle’s folk scene, Jim Page has spent decades using music to spark thought, raise consciousness, and give voice to the community. His presence at the Taste of West Seattle adds a uniquely local and meaningful layer to an already vibrant event.

“Jim is legendary in Seattle music” said Robbin Peterson, Development Director at West Seattle Food Bank. “His music is part of the foundation of this city’s musical soul, and we’re honored to have him join us in support of our mission. He isn’t just performing – he’s representing decades of community, protest, and sound that have shaped this city.”

Jim Page has recorded 24 albums and written a mountain of songs. Seattle Metropolitan Magazine calls him: “One of the 50 most influential musicians in Seattle history” In 1974 he legalized busking (street performing) in Seattle, where it had been outlawed for decades. He has toured in 13 countries including the US, Canada, Ireland, the UK, most of northern Europe, and Taiwan. His songs have been covered by The Doobie Brothers, Christy Moore, Dick Gaughan, Michael Hedges, and Roy Bailey. Bonnie Raitt says, “In the tradition of Woody and Dylan, he cuts right to the heart with music you actually enjoy listening to. I’m a longtime admirer.”

The Taste of West Seattle brings together dozens of local restaurants, breweries, wineries, and bakeries for a night of incredible food, community, and purpose – all in support of vital food and housing services for our neighbors in need.

Tickets and more information are available at westseattlefoodbank.org/taste-of-west-seattle.

We’ll once again be overseeing three sessions of that ultimate contest of raw Germanic strength – the stein holding competition! And once again if you prove yourself to be the most brawny of the bunch, you get to take home a gen-u-ine vintage stein! (1 Friday Night, 1 Saturday Afternoon, 1 Saturday Night, Men’s & Women’s contests each time.)

So come out and get your fest on, smash some biers, down some brats and brezels and show us what you got!

Frohes Oktoberfest!

Delridge Farmers’ Market 2025 @ Hope Academy
Sep 27 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Dust off your reusable totes and mark your calendars: the Delridge Farmers Market is back with more vendors, an array of culturally rich foods, handcrafted goods, and community-driven initiatives. Kicking off its 2025 season on Saturday, May 17, this beloved community hub will run every Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM until the end of October at 9421 18th Ave SW.

Hosted by African Community Housing & Development (ACHD), the Delridge Farmers Market is a celebration of culture, community, and culinary creativity. As one of Seattle’s most culturally diverse markets, it offers a platform where local entrepreneurs with global perspectives share foods and goods that reflect the rich tapestry of our city’s diversity.

What’s Fresh This Season?
Expect a blend of global flavors and handmade crafts at the Delridge Farmers Market — from Afella Jollof’s authentic Senegambian dishes like jollof rice and goat dibi to Queen Sugar Baking Company’s irresistible Southern comfort treats. This season, the market proudly welcomes two new regenerative farms to its roster: Coyote Run Farms of Woodinville and Bahati Farm of Kent, expanding access to fresh, locally grown produce.

But the Delridge Farmers Market is about more than just good food and handmade goods — it’s a hub for holistic community care. Each market serves as a one-stop shop for health and wellness needs, offering free services for the public like acupuncture, massage, or vaccinations, along with essential basic needs like diapers and dental hygiene kits to support neighbors’ well-being. Here, shopping local isn’t just a transaction — it’s a way to uplift the entire community.

Food Access for All
The Delridge Farmers Market is dedicated to making fresh, culturally relevant food accessible to the community. To support this mission, the market offers unlimited SNAP-EBT Market Match, Fresh Bucks, and WIC and Senior FMNP benefits. In addition, every youth under 18 receives a free $5 ACHD Youth Bucks voucher, helping them build healthy spending habits from an early age.

The Delridge Farmers Market proudly sources local produce from its farmer vendors to distribute free of charge, giving away more than 50 bags of high-quality vegetables at each market. To further support farmers and reduce food waste, the market also purchases unsold produce at the end of the day, ensuring guaranteed sales for vendors. This produce is then donated to local community organizations or brought back to ACHD’s offices to be shared with clients in need.

More Than a Market
Beyond the stalls, the Delridge Farmers Market pulses with life — serving as a hub where community connections thrive. Organizations like Pongo Poetry Project and Art is Not a Privilege set up alongside vendors, offering engaging youth activities and facilitating deeper connections at each market day. Nonprofits collaborate to share program information, highlight local initiatives, and provide engaging activities that foster a sense of belonging. The market is more than a place to shop — it’s where stories are shared, friendships are formed, and the community truly comes alive.

2025 West Seattle Quilters Showcase @ Center for Active Living
Sep 27 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

2025 West Seattle Quilters’ Showcase

Have you marveled at the monthly quilt display behind the reception desk at the Center for Active Living? If you thought those quilts were spectacular, wait until you see the Quilters’ Showcase!

The quilters who supply the reception desk display are mounting an exhibition of their work. Over 50 quilts will be on display on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at the Center for Active Living from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Admission is free.

You’ll see a wide variety of styles and subjects. Quilts with traditional blocks appear as do modern landscapes and portraits. Materials vary from the usual cottons to hand-embroidered wools. After saving her family’s discarded blue jeans, one quilter stitched them into a heavy quilt. Another quilter condensed his pre-retirement tie collection into a commemorative quilt!

The group of about 30 quilters meets twice a month, but they’re active all the time. They sew for themselves but occasionally collaborate, as seen in the “Picasso” series. West Seattle Quilters also make hundreds of quilts to donate to worthy causes, some of which will be on display at the Showcase.

Listening to Grief Peer Support Groups @ Mama Be Well Healing Studio
Sep 29 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Grief Support Groups

Grief groups are brave and safe spaces where bereaved people can share their stories and speak their loved one’s name without fear of getting advice, platitudes, or being shut out, no matter how long it’s been since their loved one’s passing. Every participant has dedicated time to speak about whatever they’d like, without judgment or interruption. Talking about our deceased loved ones in a supportive environment helps us remember them fully and helps us learn to carry the weight of their loss a little more gently.

These are ongoing, drop-in groups, but space is limited. Because of the sensitive nature of traumatic loss, the Thursday group is open only for those who are traumatic loss survivors. Learn more and register at listeningtogrief.com/groups. Contact Tamara at tamara@listeningtogrief.com with questions.

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

Seattle Branch Chair, EB Van Otterloo, will be one of the class instructors. Of Scottish Country Dancing, Van Otterloo says, “There are so many things to love about this form of dance. It’s social, but you don’t need to bring a partner. It’s good exercise for your body and your mind, and most of all, it is such good fun.”

Blaine Peet, who has taught Scottish Country Dancing around the world, will join Van Otterloo in teaching the new class. “Once you have learned the basics, you can dance with people anywhere across the U.S. and Canada, and around the globe. It’s a great way to make new friends in different cultures, no matter whether you are in Europe, Asia or Australia.”

The Seattle Branch has regular social events and runs classes in the U-District, at the Phinney Neighborhood Center and in Edmonds while also promoting classes in Tacoma, Burien and Mount Vernon, among others. More information is available at rscds-seattle.org/classes

Fauntleroy Creek 45th Avenue culvert replacement community meeting @ The Hall at Fauntleroy
Oct 2 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is hosting a public meeting with light snacks in the Vashon Room at the Hall at Fauntleroy located at 9131 California Ave SW. The project team will share information and project updates about the 45th Ave SW Culvert Replacement Project on October 2, 2025 from 5:30 pm-6:30 pm!

There are three culverts on Fauntleroy Creek: a lower culvert at Fauntleroy Way SW, a middle culvert at 45th Ave SW, and an upper culvert at California Ave SW. SPU is implementing a phased program to replace two of these culverts, those at 45th Ave SW and at California Ave SW. The Fauntleroy Way Culvert [east of the ferry terminal] and associated fish ladder were built in the late 1990s and are not part of the Fauntleroy Creek Culverts Replacement Program.

The October public meeting is your opportunity to hear from the 45th Ave SW Culvert Replacement Project team and ask questions … The presentation will include a project overview, design update, and expected construction impacts during the two years of construction. In addition, you will hear status updates for the Emergency Culvert Repair work under California Ave SW.

SPU plans to replace the aging culvert under 45th Ave SW near SW Wildwood Pl. The culvert is a structure that channels Fauntleroy Creek under the roadway. Replacing this culvert will restore fish passage, reduce the risk of culvert failure, improve resilience to anticipated climate change, and provide safer working conditions for crews.
SPU also plans to replace the aging culvert under California Ave SW. As design begins for that project, SPU has determined that an emergency repair is necessary to establish stabilization until the culvert can be replaced with a fish-passage structure in the future.

More information can be found on the program website.

Ashton Macaulay book launch at Paper Boat Booksellers
Oct 3 @ 6:30 pm

Local Author Ashton Macaulay Brings Sci-Fi, Sarcasm and Space Marines to Paper Boat Booksellers

Book launch for One Night at Kedasi, Macaulay’s sci-fi comedy novel set at Paper Boat Booksellers, October 3rd at 6:30 PM

One Night at Kedasi, a thrilling sci-fi adventure comedy, is Macaulay’s first traditionally published novel and releases through Artemesia Publishing and Shadow Dragon Press on 9/23/25. “The moment we read Aston’s story we knew we wanted to publish it,” Geoff Habiger, owner of Artemesia Publishing said. “This is the kind of sci-fi story that we love to read, it’s the book equivalent of a summer blockbuster movie full of action, humor, and great characters.”

One Night at Kedasi is a fast-paced sci-fi adventure that smashes together the humor of Douglas Adams with the relentless pacing of an 80s action film. Macaulay aims to write in a way that is appealing to heavy readers and those who might read one or two books a year. The story follows Captain Zip Turbine, a freelancer just trying to keep her ship in the sky. After a string of bad jobs, any offer that pays looks good. With her trusted companion Tom, a 5-foot-tall talking shrimp, Zip must race to retrieve an asset from Kedasi, an abandoned theme park asteroid.

Ashton Macaulay is a fiction writer living in West Seattle, Washington. Inspired by the big adventure novels and films of old, Macaulay transports readers to intricately crafted worlds full of strange locales, surprising creatures, and compelling characters. He offers a humorous take on all things that go bump in the night and keeps his audience laughing amidst the suspense.

Delridge Farmers’ Market 2025 @ Hope Academy
Oct 4 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
