The Mets commissioned a new work for our “Women in Love” concert called “Come See Me in the Good Light.” Here is more information for curious readers.
“Come See Me in the Good Light”
Music by Matthew Harris, matthewharrismusic.com Part II of Good Light, © 2018 by Andrea Gibson, commissioned and premiered by the Seattle Metropolitan Singers May 2026
About the text author:
Andrea Gibson (1975-2025) was an American poet and activist. Their poetry focused on gender norms, politics, social justice, LGBTQ topics, life, and mortality. Gibson was appointed as the Poet Laureate of Colorado in 2023.
About the piece, by composer Matthew Harris:
As I viewed the many online videos of poet Andrea Gibson, I became fascinated with the world of “slam poetry,” and realized that its high energy, immediacy and irreverence were the very things I had been trying to bring to choral music. Subsequently, writing this work was a joy, even, or especially, when trying to keep up with the poem’s wild mood swings. And since I often create works based on a constantly repeated motif, this poem’s constant one-word repetition was a gift. Finally, as coolness and ironic detachment seems to be modern poetry’s default mode, I found this poem’s endless and unabashed declarations of love refreshing and inspiring.
About the composer:
Matthew Harris represented North America in a recent consortium commission of choral works in memory of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Last year, his piece was subsequently performed worldwide by various choruses, culminating in Leipzig with the Gewandhaus Choir. He has had works played by the Minnesota, Houston and Florida Symphony Orchestras, and by Chelsea Opera, the New York City Opera, and the Lake George Opera Festival. The National Endowment for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, Tanglewood, Chautauqua Chamber Singers, Georges Enesco Foundation, Society for New Music, ASCAP, and BMI are among the organizations that have awarded him fellowships and composition prizes. His works are published by G. Schirmer and C.F. Grief Support Groups
Grief groups are brave and safe spaces where bereaved people can share their stories and speak their loved one’s name without fear of getting advice, platitudes, or being shut out, no matter how long it’s been since their loved one’s passing. Every participant has dedicated time to speak about whatever they’d like, without judgment or interruption. Talking about our deceased loved ones in a supportive environment helps us remember them fully and helps us learn to carry the weight of their loss a little more gently.
These are ongoing, drop-in groups, but space is limited. Because of the sensitive nature of traumatic loss, the Thursday group is open only for those who are traumatic loss survivors. Learn more and register at listeningtogrief.com/groups. Contact Tamara at tamara@listeningtogrief.com with questions.

The Seattle Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is pleased to announce a new class in West Seattle, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the promotion of Scotland’s unique dance form in the Seattle metro area.
The class welcomes both families and individuals ages eight and over, regardless of experience. This weekly introduction to joyful jigs, lively reels and elegant strathspeys will take place at Fauntleroy Church on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 beginning September 9th. The Church, located at 9140 California Avenue SW, has ample parking and is conveniently located on the RapidRide C line and a half mile from the Fauntleroy ferry terminal. Comfortable clothing permitting ease of movement, non-marking shoes and a good sense of humor are the only essentials for the class. An individual’s first class is free. Thereafter per class fees will be $10 and $5 for ages 8-17.
Seattle Branch Chair, EB Van Otterloo, will be one of the class instructors. Of Scottish Country Dancing, Van Otterloo says, “There are so many things to love about this form of dance. It’s social, but you don’t need to bring a partner. It’s good exercise for your body and your mind, and most of all, it is such good fun.”
Blaine Peet, who has taught Scottish Country Dancing around the world, will join Van Otterloo in teaching the new class. “Once you have learned the basics, you can dance with people anywhere across the U.S. and Canada, and around the globe. It’s a great way to make new friends in different cultures, no matter whether you are in Europe, Asia or Australia.”
The Seattle Branch has regular social events and runs classes in the U-District, at the Phinney Neighborhood Center and in Edmonds while also promoting classes in Tacoma, Burien and Mount Vernon, among others. More information is available at rscds-seattle.org/classes

What: South Seattle College Mural Celebration Party on June 3, 2026
Celebrating the unveiling of the Tori Shao mural at South Seattle College!
We are delighted to announce the unveiling of our second annual mural project, designed by Seattle artist Tori Shao and painted by South Seattle College ART204 Mural Painting students and the South Seattle College and West Seattle community.
Mural design, art, and story by artist Tori Shao. Painting of the mural design was completed by South Seattle College ART204 Mural Painting students and community, led by mural painting class art faculty Scott Méxcal.
When: 1-3 pm Wednesday, June 3, 2026
Where: Olympic Hall Courtyard, South Seattle College,
6000 16th Ave SWMusic and refreshments provided, with traditional birria from Jalisco, Mexico. Sponsored by Division for Access, Community, & Opportunity.
Who is Tori Shao?
Tori Shao is a Seattle-based muralist, illustrator, and landscape architect whose work explores the many ways in which we connect with the world around us, whether through nature, the built environment, or the stories we share. Raised in Seattle, Tori is inspired by the layered histories, diverse ecologies, geologies, and native flora and fauna of Washington state. These form the foundation of her artistic vision, shaping work that celebrates the richness of place and the interdependence between people and the environment. Tori’s artwork blends ecological observation and cultural storytelling with elements of fantasy, transforming familiar environments into spaces of imagination and discovery. Through vibrant colors, dynamic compositions, and dreamlike storytelling, she explores themes of community, growth, connection, conservation, and diversity.Since 2020, Tori has expanded her practice into the realm of public murals that illustrate these themes on a grand immersive scale. She creates welcoming spaces that nurture curiosity and joy while celebrating the unique identity of each place and community. By weaving together color, storytelling, and design, her goal is to illuminate the ecological and cultural systems that connect us, fostering collective appreciation, empathy, imagination, and stewardship for the places we call home.
See more of Tori’s work here.
About the design:
For the South Seattle College mural, Tori created a lush temperate understory scene in which a nurse log is the central figure, supporting life by nurturing new plants, fungi, and organisms as it slowly decomposes. Sunbeams shine through the canopy onto the nurse log and the understory, supporting new cycles of forest succession. Western red cedar, Douglas fir, and bigleaf maple make up the main structure of the forest, with foliage texture throughout the background. In the foreground, native understory plants are rendered in greater detail including salmonberry, mayapple, sword fern, salal, trillium, and red huckleberry. The nurse log is proliferated with licorice fern, moss, and western hemlock saplings. The nurse log symbolizes how education functions as a foundation for growth–just as the decaying log provides nutrients and structure for new life, a college community provides support, resources, and knowledge that help students develop to be better prepared for the next step in their lives. The nurse log and surrounding elements reflect cycles of renewal, shared resources, and interconnected communities.
About the project
The layout and painting of the mural was led by full time art faculty Scott Méxcal. Twice a week, Scott facilitated a class built around the layout and execution of the mural, during which students learned how to use various grid methods to draft the outlines, paint at a large scale, and polish the design with final details. Outside of class hours, Scott led several community paint days, during which South Seattle College community and West Seattle neighbors and artists were invited to join in the realization of this mural and community space.
Who led this?
Scott Méxcal is full time art faculty here on campus, as well as a beloved community muralist and artist. Scott has been incredible in leading this project! He’s put in countless hours assisting with the artist selection process, coordinating the mural design with Tori, planning community paint days, meeting with the faculty, and teaching the mural class; as well as participating as a member of the Art Gallery Committee.Art Gallery Committee members are Eileen Jimenez, Stephanie Hankinson, Scott Méxcal, Amiko Matsuo, and Sharon Arnold, who met each week to review proposals and designs, engage walk throughs to finalize the mural location, raise awareness in the gallery, and more!
USA Student Leadership, and in particular USA President Judas Iscariot, who unanimously supported and generously advocated for the ongoing work of both the mural project and the art gallery to raise the visibility of our community-building work on campus.
South Seattle College leadership, staff and faculty demonstrated their support in engaging with the entire process from start to finish.

Organizer Brian Callanan offers some preview points, such as: “We are working on expanding our live music for this year, with a new stage area closer to the actual race course — which should improve the experience for participants, sponsors, and our musical acts.” Also watch for an update to Loop the ‘Lupe’s senior event, and “we’ll be offering our Elite Wave, Family Wave, 5K Run/Walk, and Youth Dash again, and we’re proud to kick off what will be our TENTH year (first one was in 2017).” Better yet, one more thing from Brian: “Our lowest prices of the year to register are from now until March 20, and teams who sign up 4+ at once get even more discounts.” Why wait when you can get a deal?
