(Our big Easter service)
April 19 starting at 6:30p
Childcare and kid activities offered for kids up to age 9.
You can come as early as 6:30 to hang out around the bonfire and drop kids off to their classes.
This is our main Easter service and a high point in our year. The service begins outside of the building around a bonfire (on the gravel near the main entrance ramp on 35th). We begin with a bonfire as a reminder of the fire around which Peter denied Jesus and the bonfire on the beach on which he was later restored by Jesus’s grace. Then, light from that fire makes its way into the darkened church building on a large candle. The service gets brighter as we celebrate what Jesus has done about the darkness of death and injustice: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5).Easter Sunday “Sunrise” Gathering

ArtsWest presents ATHENA by Gracie Gardner, directed by Kathryn Van Meter. The cast features Anteia DeLaney (Mary Wallace) and Allison Renee (Athena). ATHENA performs at ArtsWest from April 10 – May 4, 2025. Tickets are available online at artswest.org or by phone at (206) 938.0963.
Mary Wallace and Athena are both seventeen-year-old fencers training for Nationals. Mary Wallace lives in a house in New Jersey, loves marine biology and practices at home. Athena lives in an apartment in New York City, takes acne medication and Athena is not her real name. Follow their journey from competitors to confidantes as they form a bond navigating the milestones of adolescence, training together only to learn the future is only certain for one of them.
During ArtsWest’s 2024 – 2025 Season, the company presents five productions that are THEATER PLUS; theater plus something unexpected, something out of the ordinary, something you can’t experience anywhere else.
ArtsWest’s fourth production of the season, ATHENA, is theater plus live fencing. In order to stage ATHENA with authenticity, ArtsWest is presenting ATHENA in collaboration with Salle Auriol Fencing Club. Salle Auriol is a non-profit fencing club located in Interbay. Their mission is to train participants in the sport of modern Olympic fencing and to provide a venue for fencers to develop those skills towards participation in local, regional, national and international competition. Salle Auriol is recognized and respected as a nationally and internationally competitive club with activities and programs designed for fencers of all experience levels and ages.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with the team at Salle Auriol to bring Gracie Gardner’s gorgeous play to life,” says Producing Artistic Director, Mathew Wright. “Our audiences love theater that is intimate and emotionally athletic, so producing something that is both a metaphorical and literal sparring match is such a natural fit. Watching these two young women navigate growing up in our culture while smack in the middle of live fencing matches is such unique and exciting theater.”ATHENA’s cast features two recent Cornish College of the Arts graduates, Anteia DeLaney (Spring Awakening, The 5th Avenue Theater) and Allison Renee (The Two Gentleman of Verona, Seattle Shakespeare). In this action-packed production that centers female friendship, actor Allison Renee shares, “Anteia and I not only went to college together, but we played opposites in a production my first year, we were roommates, and we were in Cabaret together my third year— that was also directed by Kathryn Van Meter! It’s quite the full circle moment!”
ArtsWest will present ATHENA Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Saturday through Sunday at 3 pm.

Duwamish Alive!
Celebrating Earth Month in the Duwamish
SAVE THE DATE:
Saturday, April 19th 10 – 2Join us in celebrating Seattle’s only RIVER, the Duwamish, with community volunteers working on the river removing debris, caring for salmon habitat and our upland forests in an effort to improve native habitat health and water quality not only for our salmon and orca but all wildlife and communities within the Duwamish Watershed so that all can thrive in our urban community.
Our forested areas such as the West Duwamish Greenbelt, one of the largest in the lower section of the river, provides important air and water filtration of pollution, especially storm runoff one of the major sources polluting our waters. Tree canopy cover also reduces our summer heat domes, unequally affecting low income, communities of color to a greater degree. Duwamish Alive Coalition continues to nurture and expand tree canopy within our local communities which suffer the effects of pollution and heat domes.
The river ecosystem supports 5 salmon species including the threatened Chinook salmon which is a critical food source for our Southern Resident Orcas; along with wildlife that includes river otters, beavers, bald eagles, and blue herons. Each of our habitat sites supports this web of life while providing important environmental benefits to our communities.
We are honored to help steward these lands and waters that are the ancestral home of the Duwamish Peoples.Point Rediscovery at Hamm Creek, Seattle DIRT Corps
Hamm Creek is only one of the two salmon spawning creeks of the Duwamish River and also were John Beal, the first person who started the effort in restoring the river. John was a veteran of the Vietnam War, who came back with many health challenges and the prognosis of only having 6 months to live. With those 6 months he decided to clean up Hamm Creek, the place of his home. As the health of the creek improved, so did John’s and his advocacy efforts for the river. The river we have today is from his initial efforts and all those who have followed in his foot steps. Point Rediscovery is John’s memorial to his military friends from the war and also to the creek he loved. Join DIRT Corps in restoring this special place. Volunteers will be removing invasive plants and debris and providing information on the site itself, how it’s being used to capture and filter storm water, and what needs to happen to make this a salmon bearing creek again.Duwamish Hill Preserve, Tukwila Green Tukwila Partnership
Duwamish Hill is a sacred site of the Duwamish Tribe, we are honored to help in stewarding this special area by planting native plants in the forest and creation of a new pollinator meadow. Efforts also include removing invasive plants, soil improvement and mulching. On short notice a single person rallied 70+ people for a neighborhood protest in the Alaska Junction on April 5th! Many people said they’d like to see something like it on a regular basis. So in solidarity with the very successful Tesla Takedowns on Saturdays as well as showing there’s a groundswell of resistance spreading into neighborhoods all across the country, beginning this Saturday from 10-12 in the Alaska Junction there will be a West Seattle Resists rally. How can people participate? You can join us in the Alaska Junction, you can spread the word all around the Peninsula (Alaska Junction is well served by several bus lines), and you can also organize other rallies in all the neighborhoods that make West Seattle so wonderful.
Hope to see you there! Bring signs, things that make noise, and chairs if that is helpful.
(For location – see this site.)

But more importantly, we need to come together and show our vulnerable neighbors that we stand up for justice and have their backs.

Grief Support Groups
Grief groups are brave and safe spaces where bereaved people can share their stories and speak their loved one’s name without fear of getting advice, platitudes, or being shut out, no matter how long it’s been since their loved one’s passing. Every participant has dedicated time to speak about whatever they’d like, without judgment or interruption. Talking about our deceased loved ones in a supportive environment helps us remember them fully and helps us learn to carry the weight of their loss a little more gently.
These are ongoing, drop-in groups, but space is limited. Because of the sensitive nature of traumatic loss, the Thursday group is open only for those who are traumatic loss survivors. Learn more and register at listeningtogrief.com/groups. Contact Tamara at tamara@listeningtogrief.com with questions.

F3, a free national men’s workout group:
We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.
The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

Tickets are $20 presale or $25 at the door. All proceeds go to the Madison Music Boosters, which directly supports the Madison Middle School Music Department. This event is important, because it pulls in the majority of the funds that the music department needs annually for things like instrument replacement, concert accompaniment, instrument accessories, music books, sheet music, repairs, tuning, scholarships, travel costs, and more. Given how the arts continue to impact our collective human experience, our community is playing a part in supporting younger generations in taking up the torch (or instrument, as it were) to continue the rich tradition and cultural legacy of music.
An ADA-accessible entrance is on the south side of Madison Middle School, nearest to the U-shaped parking lot outside of the gym structure. Elevators will be made accessible for the event, which will be held in the Madison Commons, one level below the main floor.
