‘Topdog/Underdog’ at ArtsWest, evening performances
Feb 13 @ 7:30 pm

Winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, “Topdog/Underdog” is a darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity and is Suzan-Lori Parks’ groundbreaking riff on the way we are defined by history. The play tells the story of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers whose names were given to them as a joke, foretelling a lifetime of sibling rivalry and resentment. Haunted by the past, the brothers are forced to confront the shattering reality of their future.

ArtsWest and The Hansberry Project have been co-producers since 2014. Founded in 2004, The Hansberry Project is a professional black theatre company dedicated to the artistic exploration of African American life, history and culture. Past co-productions include audience favorites “Clyde’s” by Lynn Nottage (2024) and “Sunset Baby” by Dominique Morriseau (2019). “Topdog/Underdog” marks the fifth collaboration between the two theater companies; each with Valerie Curtis-Newton in the role of director.

“Topdog/Underdog” is about the struggle to reach success in a system that is rigged. This drama packs a punch with as much comedy as it has intensity. A rooming house room the size of a boxing ring becomes a pressure cooker for the two brothers who share a past and are carving their own paths as they strive towards their dreams for the future. Director Valerie Curtis-Newton remarks, “The life of a dog in the fight is a life that breeds paranoia. The under dog is always watching their back and struggling to reach the top. The top dog gets to call the shots, but for how long? “Topdog/Underdog” puts the pain of that cycle under a microscope with the hope that in investigating it, we can learn to break it.”

“Topdog/Underdog” is the third production of ArtsWest’s 2025-2026 Season titled Between Us. The season features 5 bold contemporary plays that explore the invisible threads that bind us — the responsibilities we bear for one another, the debts of care we carry, and the lifelines we extend in moments of crisis. In TOPDOG/UNDERDOG, two brothers wrestle with what they owe one another whether it be a roof over their head, a cut of their paycheck, or a watchful eye while the play asks audiences to contemplate the systems of oppression in America and what we owe our communities to create change.

ArtsWest is at 4711 California SW. Tickets are available online here.

Priorities change monthly to meet special and seasonal needs — so please check our website for updates.

The Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), our donations-drive partner, requests non-perishable food/personal hygiene items as well as men’s work clothing, socks, work boots, etc. Outdoor gear is always needed: blankets, tents, tarps, backpacks, etc.

Your donations are distributed through WIN’s “Welcome Table,” a weekly Saturday meal for unsheltered and low-income folks hosted in White Center. This distribution serves as a stopgap for many people relying on weekly visits to the food bank.

Can’t make it to the monthly drive? No problem! Just leave your donations in the barrel outside the church’s front entrance … at your convenience.

IF YOU WANT TO DONATE MORE THAN 3 BAGS, PLEASE CONTACT US FIRST TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS. We unfortunately don’t have the storage space or staff to accommodate large donations between drives.

Many of the folks who receive your donations are unsheltered. Please do NOT leave inappropriate household items that aren’t requested.

Deepest gratitude to our community for your generous support of our neighbors in need.

Sacred Resonance: Vocal Toning for Healing and Empowerment—The Wisdom of Dissonance

In music, moments of tension create the conditions for blissful resolution—but only if we’re willing to stay present long enough to feel them. When we rush toward comfort, we often miss the depth of what’s truly unfolding for us. This month at Sacred Resonance, we’ll use our voices to tap into the power of leaning into moments of vocal dissonance together in a safe, welcoming space, allowing our nervous systems to practice staying regulated through uncertainty. The wisdom of dissonance invites us all into a deeper understanding of what it feels like to step into the unknown and trust the process of all that is unfolding, so we can meet what’s ahead with greater patience, flow, and self-compassion.

Tone Circle™ Founder Briana Blythe leads this beloved West Seattle circle on the third Sunday of each month. Briana has made it her mission to help all people reconnect with their voices as the powerful energy tools they are for greater clarity, healing, and manifestation. Before entering the world of sound healing, Briana trained extensively in classical vocal performance and opera. After burnout and personal loss led her into a silent career, it was the simple act of vocal toning that healed her relationship with her own voice—finally freeing it as an anytime, anywhere tool for restoring harmony from the inside out. She now leads deeply transformational vocal workshops and sound experiences that empower all participants to release fear, shame, and self-judgment around their voices, while offering vibrational attunements through her own vocal channel to support the elevation of collective consciousness. Learn more about Briana and Tone Circle at tonecircleseattle.com.

Listening to Grief Peer Support Groups @ Mama Be Well Healing Studio
Feb 16 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Grief Support Groups

Grief groups are brave and safe spaces where bereaved people can share their stories and speak their loved one’s name without fear of getting advice, platitudes, or being shut out, no matter how long it’s been since their loved one’s passing. Every participant has dedicated time to speak about whatever they’d like, without judgment or interruption. Talking about our deceased loved ones in a supportive environment helps us remember them fully and helps us learn to carry the weight of their loss a little more gently.

These are ongoing, drop-in groups, but space is limited. Because of the sensitive nature of traumatic loss, the Thursday group is open only for those who are traumatic loss survivors. Learn more and register at listeningtogrief.com/groups. Contact Tamara at tamara@listeningtogrief.com with questions.

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Feb 17 @ 5:30 am

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

Scottish Country Dancing classes in West Seattle @ Fauntleroy Church
Feb 17 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

The Seattle Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is pleased to announce a new class in West Seattle, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the promotion of Scotland’s unique dance form in the Seattle metro area.

The class welcomes both families and individuals ages eight and over, regardless of experience. This weekly introduction to joyful jigs, lively reels and elegant strathspeys will take place at Fauntleroy Church on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 beginning September 9th. The Church, located at 9140 California Avenue SW, has ample parking and is conveniently located on the RapidRide C line and a half mile from the Fauntleroy ferry terminal. Comfortable clothing permitting ease of movement, non-marking shoes and a good sense of humor are the only essentials for the class. An individual’s first class is free. Thereafter per class fees will be $10 and $5 for ages 8-17.

Seattle Branch Chair, EB Van Otterloo, will be one of the class instructors. Of Scottish Country Dancing, Van Otterloo says, “There are so many things to love about this form of dance. It’s social, but you don’t need to bring a partner. It’s good exercise for your body and your mind, and most of all, it is such good fun.”

Blaine Peet, who has taught Scottish Country Dancing around the world, will join Van Otterloo in teaching the new class. “Once you have learned the basics, you can dance with people anywhere across the U.S. and Canada, and around the globe. It’s a great way to make new friends in different cultures, no matter whether you are in Europe, Asia or Australia.”

The Seattle Branch has regular social events and runs classes in the U-District, at the Phinney Neighborhood Center and in Edmonds while also promoting classes in Tacoma, Burien and Mount Vernon, among others. More information is available at rscds-seattle.org/classes

‘Topdog/Underdog’ at ArtsWest, evening performances
Feb 19 @ 7:30 pm

‘Topdog/Underdog’ at ArtsWest, matinee performances
Feb 22 @ 3:00 pm

Tickets are available online here

The Detention Lottery and talkback with practicing immigration attorneys
An Immersive Theater Experience
Margaret O’Donnell, playwright Amy Youngblood, Director
Chih-yu Chao, Production Coordinator June Stacey-Clemons, Production Assistant

Sunday, February 22, 2026 at 4:00 pm
Fauntleroy Church UCC, 9140 California Ave SW
Sponsored by Fauntleroy Church UCC Immigration Task Force and West Seattle Indivisible
Admission is free
All proceeds benefit the projects of the Immigration Task Force

The Detention Lottery takes the audience past today’s scary headlines and news clips, directly into the detention courtroom. We witness desperate consultations between detainees and attorneys, realizing that these few moments together could determine their future forever. We sit in the courtroom where decisions are rendered, seeing for ourselves the justice being served in our name.

The immersive impact starts before the play begins. “ICE agents” prowl the audience, “arresting” members on the spot and delivering them to the detention cell, where they are assigned a role of detainee.

Practicing immigration attorneys take key roles in each production, then lead the talkback after the performance. The other roles are covered by actors, activists, and advocates who care about immigrant justice enough to bring it to the stage.

“The Detention Lottery is accurate, but not a documentary. It is theater, grounded in real life. It raises awareness without threatening, educates without lecturing, and can raise money without charging admission. And it packs a wallop to everyone who sees it,” says Amy Youngblood, who has directed each performance since its revival last spring. “We bring the performance at no charge to the sponsoring organization. At the same time, nonprofit organizations are welcome to produce their own shows with no royalties, as The Detention Lottery is licensed under the Creative Commons license.”

Playwright Margaret O’Donnell, a retired practicing immigration attorney, once despaired of trying to convey to others just what justice was being served in the public’s name. She discovered a talent for writing plays, and in 2018, St. Mark’s Cathedral launched The Detention Lottery to great acclaim. Since then, dozens of sponsoring organizations have presented The Detention Lottery to stunned audiences, raising awareness, inspiration for activism, and funds for immigrant justice projects.

Last year, a change in directors prompted a program refresh. A mutual friend introduced Amy to Margaret O’Donnell. In each other they found the emotional intensity needed to propel such a distinct experience back into public awareness. Chih-yu Chao provides technical organization and sundry wizardry, and June Stacey-Clemons assists with everything necessary to put on a show.

Participating in The Detention Lottery means more than putting on a show. It means joining a community that brings together actors, activists, and advocates in new ways.

Future Productions include:

Saturday, March 21, 2026, St. James Cathedral

Sunday, April 19, Bothell United Methodist Church

Sunday, May 3, Center for Spiritual Living, Ballard

“Actors and advocates bring storytelling. Advocates and activists bring purpose. Activists and Actors bring action. All of these participants bring fresh, intense energy to each production,” Amy says. “We build a community of people who feel the drive to tell these stories compellingly. As the pool grows, so grows our ability to bring performances to any sponsoring organization who asks.” The pool also sparks new friendships and collaborations as like-minded individuals will do.
Each performance means a new sponsor, a new venue, and a new cast. Amy works to incorporate all of the sponsor’s values into their production. Informational handouts? Got them. Time to talk about the organization’s projects? Check. The venue commonly means a church sanctuary, meaning carving a stage set out of space designed for worship. The cast includes practicing immigration attorneys who take roles, then conduct the talkback afterward.

Beyond sanctuary stages, dedicated volunteers have produced a radio-drama version to submit to an international festival. Last month two attorneys and three actors enacted a scene, then led a talkback, for a Rotary Club meeting.

Listening to Grief Peer Support Groups @ Mama Be Well Healing Studio
Feb 23 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Feb 24 @ 5:30 am
