For a quarter of a century, The Hall at Fauntleroy has served a free Thanksgiving feast to community members – open to all. In addition to diners, they’re also again welcoming volunteers and dessert donors, Here’s the announcement:
All are welcome on Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 23rd from 12 pm-3 pm – for this year’s annual Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner! The delicious meal, created this year by Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering‘s Jr. Sous Chef Zach Mosely, will include a traditional turkey dinner and all the trimmings, with desserts donated by the community. No need to RSVP, just show up at Hall at Fauntleroy (9131 California Ave SW) on Thanksgiving Day between 12-3 pm.
This event happens with the help of many wonderful volunteers. You can sign up to volunteer or bring a dessert on signup.com.
Gently used warm clothing, new blankets and socks, and dessert donations can be dropped off at our SODO office at 4105 Airport Way S., from Monday, November 20, to Wednesday, November 22, from 9 am-3 pm [or drop in Fauntleroy Schoolhouse hallway bin] or bring it to The Hall at Fauntleroy on Thanksgiving Day from 10 am-1 pm.
As we move into the season of long dark nights, we have news of a light show coming to West Seattle for the holiday season. The website for the Seattle Chinese Garden, which is on the north end of the South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) campus on Puget Ridge, points to the site for Astra Lumina, a traveling light show described as an hour-long “enchanted night walk” along a “celestial pathway of lustrous light, cosmic visions, and astral song” comprising a “multisensory immersive experience for all ages.” It’s been to 19 other places, including Los Angeles, for which this promotional clip was prepared:
This is expected to be a regional attraction, December 8-31, running Thursdays-Sundays, 5 pm-10 pm (Saturdays until 1 pm), then seven nights a week December 14-31. Admission, according to the Astra Lumina website, will be $41 for ages 13 and up, $35 seniors 65+, $31 kids 4-12, group discounts available, plus paid parking if you drive. The West Seattle Junction Association is still accepting submissions for the GLOWS projected-light show on December 9 – the new deadline is November 10, one week from today. It’ll be part of Glorious Lights of West Seattle, which in turn is part of the big night of holiday festivities in The Junction, also including the Christmas Tree Lighting, Night Market, and light-costume contest. The Community Art Spectacular will feature images projected on the seven-story Alaska House building that night, next to Junction Plaza Park, from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. The categories announced by WSJA are:
1. The significance of light during the winter
2. How you GLOW as part of our community
3. The brightest thing(s) in your West Seattle life
4. Who is your glorious light of West Seattle? (bonus category)
Art-medium categories include: fine and graphic art, photography and silent video shorts, and original AI-generated art (prompts cannot be from another artist or piece of art). With three weeks and two days until Thanksgiving, you might be contemplating a no-cooking option. We’ll of course be compiling a list of restaurants planning to be open on the holiday; for early planning, here’s the first announcement: 
After a pandemic hiatus, the most opulent Thanksgiving restaurant option in West Seattle is back. Salty’s on Alki (1936 Harbor SW; WSB sponsor) is taking reservations for the return of its Thanksgiving buffet. They’re booking hour-and-a-half seatings between 10 am and 5 pm on November 23rd. $120 for age 16 and up, $60 for age 10-15, $30 for age 5-9, free for the littlest ones (4 and under). You can see the full menu here – the buffet is grouped into Breakfast Classics, Salads & Such, Seafood Bonanza, Crustacean Station, Carved Meats, Thanksgiving Sides, Made-to-Order Pastas, the famous Chocolate Fountain, Fresh-Baked Pies, and a Cornucopia of Cupcakes. As promised, now that mid-October is here, the West Seattle Junction Association is welcoming submissions for the Community Art Showcase that’s part of the Hometown Holidays Glorious Lights of West Seattle Festival. ORIGINAL TUESDAY NIGHT REPORT: This year, the West Seattle Junction Association plans to expand its celebration of light during the holidays – and you’re invited to help design the biggest event of all.
Starting in mid-October, WSJA will accept community submissions of AI-powered art that would be projected, in light, onto the big blank side of Alaska House that faces Junction Plaza Park. This will be the centerpiece of the Glorious Lights Of West Seattle (GLOWS) celebration on Saturday, December 9th – the night that also will bring the Christmas tree lighting, the Night Market, another light-costume contest, even an arch of lights down a Junction alley. WSJA executive director Chris Mackay has been dreaming of this for a long time, and this year GLOWS will really get going. Watch for more details in October about exactly how to contribute … and even if you don’t want to submit a design, set your calendar for December 9th and plan to spend that night in The Junction!
ADDED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON: We asked WSJA’s Mackay if she had any comment regarding the discussion this announcement has generated, particularly voicing concerns about AI replacing human artists who might otherwise been used. Here’s the response:
The AI Light Show steering committee would like to express how we (a bunch of creatives) feel about this incredible AI Light Show for the West Seattle Community and why we are doing it.
GLOWS – Glorious Lights of West Seattle – is designed to show how we all glow as individuals and maybe first-time artists. Using AI is not limiting our creativity but expanding it. A machine does not create art on its own. People are creating this art with their ideas and prompts. By using AI, everyone can be involved, even if they have never created a piece of art in their lives. This is about the novelty of the technology and the opportunity to put it in the hands of people who enjoy the idea of being part of a light festival.
What we are doing with this event is all done by humans working together to create something wonderful and full of light and joy for the entire community. From creating the idea, to editing the presentation, and working with the accompanying music; it’s all human. Join in the JOY!
In a Labor Day tradition, a new American flag was raised today at Alki Masonic Lodge in The Junction. The VFW assisted – with the old flag, below, are state commander Traci K. Williams (Renton #1263) and Thomas Snead (Puyallup #2224):
The old flag will be kept at the lodge in honor of a former lodge master who passed away this year. Also at today’s ceremony were members of the youth group Rainbow Girls:

Proud dad David Chang shares this story of Fourth of July giving and gratitude:
We want to thank our community for overwhelming support during the 4th of July parade.
With your help, Sophia Chang, Mallory Browne, both 8 years old, and Gavin Chang, 11 years old (Sophia’s cousin visiting from Cherry Hill, NJ), were able to sell over 270 watermelon popsicles.
As planned, the proceeds were delivered to Seattle Children’s Hospital on Wednesday, totaling $266.48. Mr. Dondi Cupp, Senior VP, Chief Development Officer, graciously accepted the donation from our West Seattle community to help those in need of medical care at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
The kids sold the popsicles from a sidewalk stand. David explains, “A former classmate of Sophia recently needed care at Seattle Children’s Hospital, which prompted her to think about donating the proceeds to help children who are hurt and sick.”
10:44 PM: Tonight, for SFD, “brush fire” is the catch-all classification for many fireworks-caused (or likely-fireworks-caused) fires. Last year on the 4th of July, the Real-Time 911 log (archived here) had one “brush fire” call. So far today/tonight (live log here), citywide, there are 34. Some were reported as tree fires, some as shrub fires, some as lawn fires. Some are park fires – we’ve heard Hamilton Viewpoint and Westcrest Park mentioned. Firefighters responding to one at 30th/Cambridge pleaded with the dispatcher for police help, saying they were dealing with people “who refuse to stop setting off fireworks.”
Some police are tied up with managing the Alki crowd – we counted 7 cars between the Bathhouse and Don Armeni before sunset, and right now they’re dealing with routing traffic out of Alki, since fireworks-watchers will be leaving, and the beach is technically closed for the night. Expect some temporary road closures if you have to head that way.
More as-it-happens notes as the night goes on.
11:07 PM: Next “brush fire” response – Solstice Park (whether the tennis courts or P-patch, we haven’t heard). … Another frequently used classification on the 4th is “rubbish fire” – 11 so far citywide tonight. One of those is reported right now in a trash receptacle near the Lincoln Park south lot. … Another brush fire at 18th/Henderson.
11:47 PM: Possible residential fire near 35th and 104th in Arbor Heights. … Texter says “mostly garage.” … First firefighters on scene say it’s a car fire “with exposure’ (to a structure) … Adding texted photo from Colby Blanton:
11:56 PM: SFD says the fire is under control. … The response is being reduced. They’re calling in the SFD investigator to determine how it started.
12:46 AM: Dispatchers have been trying for more than half an hour to get an officer to an assault report involving someone “deliberately” injured by fireworks. One officer was just about to go – and then had to be diverted for a report of someone seen firing a gun on 15th SW.
1:02 AM: Somebody finally became available for the assault call. … Fire calls have slowed down but citywide there’s still been nine calls classified brush, rubbish, or dumpster fire.
1:17 AM: Next fire call, a “brush fire” between West Seattle Stadium and the golf course. … A response in Riverview, at 11th/Webster, is NOT for fireworks/fire, but rather a vehicle collision.
1:29 AM: “Brush fire” in the parking lot of Salty’s on Alki (WSB sponsor), “near a light pole.”
2:18 AM: Nothing since then, though we’re still hearing scattered detonations.

ADDED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON: SFD says the fire in Arbor Heights was accidental, “likely caused by fireworks,” with damage estimated at $85,000.
That’s the entirety of this year’s West Seattle Fourth of July Kids’ Parade, toward the start of its traditional route through North Admiral. Our subjective way of measuring participation each year is the length of our start-to-finish video, and this year was among the longest, at 17+ minutes (2018 was almost 19). It’s an informal, community-supported event, underwritten by local sponsors (this year including WSB), and organized one last time by Megan Erb, who’s turning it over to the Admiral Neighborhood Association for next year. Please don’t DIY. It’s warm, it’s dry, fires start easily – last night in the span of just two hours in West Seattle, SFD was dispatched to half a dozen grass/tree fires. Watch the Lake Union Seafair Summer Fourth fireworks at 10:20 pm instead, either from a north-facing West Seattle spot that’ll get you a good view, or by going there, OR via live video. … No Three Tree Point fireworks again this year … Across the water: Vashon Island‘s fireworks show returns, over Quartermaster Harbor.

The peninsula’s biggest holiday event starts at 10 am tomorrow – the West Seattle Fourth of July Kids’ Parade! This afternoon we have some final words from organizer Megan Erb for everyone planning on participating or watching:
Tomorrow is the West Seattle 4th of July Kids Parade that heads through the North Admiral neighborhood and ends up at Hamilton Viewpoint Park. Here’s a few things to know if you’re planning on attending.
The kids are the parade! Dress up in your favorite 4th of July duds, decorate your bike, scooter, wagon, stroller, and yourself and join the fun! Or you can grab a chair and a flag and watch all the cuteness walk by. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at the intersection of 44th Ave. SW and Sunset Ave. [map] with a welcome speech by parade organizer Megan Erb, the singing of the National Anthem by Mode Music, and the parade countdown! There is a bunch of 4th of July swag that will also be handed out by Red Level sponsors of the parade: Neighborhood Naturopathic, Westside School, Holy Rosary School, and South Seattle Cooperative Preschool. Make your way to the start of the parade for pinwheels, flags, necklaces, and more!
If you’re heading to the fun at Hamilton Viewpoint Park, please note you will not be able to park at the parking lot. It’ll be blocked off for the safety of the paradegoers. SPD will be on hand to help keep everyone safe. Two food trucks, Lil’ J’s Super Dawgs and Homebites, will be there, and West Seattle Grounds will have a cold-brew coffee cart with pastries.
Several sponsors will have table activities for kiddos at the park, including Neighborhood Naturopathic, Holy Rosary School, South Seattle Cooperative Preschool, Outer Space Seattle, Sensa Play, Mathnasium, Mode Music, and the Admiral Neighborhood Association. The event isn’t possible without these sponsors and others, including West Seattle Blog, Potter Construction, Fit4Mom West Seattle, South Seattle Crossfit, West Seattle Food Bank, and Westside School.

Also note if you’re traveling in the area between 10 am and 11 am, the parade does cross California SW south of Hamilton Viewpoint, so there’ll be some traffic stoppages. The parade’s been a tradition for more than a quarter-century!

Here’s the annual announcement – the list of fields where Seattle Parks will turn on the lights for a few hours on the Fourth of July – and, this year, the preceding night – in hopes of discouraging fireworks use. Below, you’ll see the West Seattle list (for the full citywide list, go here):
Seattle Parks and Recreation will turn on field lighting on ballfields throughout the city on the evening of Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4 to protect the surfaces. The ballfield lights will be turned on at approximately 8:30 p.m. and most will be turned off at either 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., depending on the field.
The lights will be turned on to discourage the use of fireworks. Fireworks are illegal in the city of Seattle and will destroy the artificial turf on the fields or surrounding facilities. The approximate replacement cost for the synthetic surface based on per average full-size field (110,000 square feet) is $1.2 million. All the fields have been renovated in the past several years and benefit field users including players of soccer, football, baseball, Ultimate Frisbee and lacrosse.
The fields will be monitored from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Lights at the following fields will be turned off at 11 p.m.:

Hiawatha Playfield, 2700 California Ave. SW
Walt Hundley Playfield, 6920 34th Avenue SW
West Seattle Stadium, 4432 35th Ave. SW
(Last year, Parks turned on the lights for three nights.) As for Seattle Public Schools fields, they have not historically had a similar plan, but we’re checking. Also of note: Though the Parks news release doesn’t mention it, Hiawatha is currently undergoing a field renovation, and Delridge is just starting one.

So far, looks like sunshine is in store for the Fourth of July – which kicks off in earnest at 10 am, when the West Seattle Fourth of July Kids’ Parade winds through a few blocks of North Admiral, headed for games, activities (potato-sack races for adults as well as kids!), and food trucks at Hamilton Viewpoint Park. With one week to go, we’re reminding you again about the parade (for which WSB is among the community co-sponsors), which starts at 44th/Sunset [map]. Except for a couple vehicles at the start (usually including a fire engine), it’s a non-motorized parade – participants walk or ride scooters or bicycles (and the littlest ones get pushed in strollers or pulled in wagons). Spectators are welcome. If you’re not going to participate or watch but you might be traveling on California SW’s north end that morning, the parade does cross that street south of Hamilton Viewpoint, so you might find yourself stopped for a bit.

Westside School – New sponsorThree food trucks and one coffee cart will await hungry parade-goers at Hamilton Viewpoint Park! Welcome back two past-parade food trucks, Mini the Dough-nut and Lil J’s Super Dawgs. This year Homebites is joining the line-up. West Seattle Grounds will have a cold-brew coffee cart. The park will also feature several kids’ activity tables and potato-sack races for kids of all ages – including adults!
The parade is made up of you, the community! Parade-goers decorate bikes, strollers, scooters, and themselves and walk through the Admiral neighborhood starting at 10 am from Sunset Ave. and 44th Ave. SW [map]. SFD Engine 29 and the Seattle Police Department will be on hand to kick off the parade and ensure a safe event for all! Join the fun and walk with the parade, or put out a lawn chair and cheer the parade on! There’s a fun option for all!
Parade organizer Megan Erb says starting next year; the parade will be rolled in the Admiral Neighborhood Association programming to ensure the parade continues to stay a staple of the community. The parade is a volunteer-based event with local businesses’ support to help cover the costs and keep the event free and open to all! The parade is a long-running West Seattle tradition, dating back to the mid-’90s.

Sound Transit – No holiday changes.
Parking holiday – In Seattle neighborhoods where fees are charged for on-street parking, there’s no charge today.
