West Seattle, Washington
10 Wednesday
The Santa-and-dogs photos are courtesy of Camp Crockett dog-day-care-and-more (5611 Delridge Way SW; WSB sponsor), to go with a few Holiday Guide/Event Calendar highlights we wanted to share before we get any further into the afternoon:
SHOP LATE: Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) is open until 8 tonight. (4540 California SW) … Also open for late shopping (game-playing, etc.) is Meeples Games (WSB sponsor), open until 10 pm. (3727 California SW)
SANTA AT WEST SEATTLE THRIFTWAY: He’s back! 4 pm-7 pm, and that’s also when you’ll find Keith Terhune playing holiday tunes in the store. (Fauntleroy/California/Morgan)
‘TYING TUESDAY’ CLASS: 7 pm at Emerald Water Anglers (WSB sponsor) – check ASAP to see if there’s a spot left! (42nd SW/SW Oregon)
SOUTH SOUND TUG AND BARGE: Holiday songs and more, live at Parliament Tavern, 8 pm. 21+. (4210 SW Admiral Way)
BABY KETTEN KARAOKE: By no means your standard karaoke. See for yourself, 9 pm at The Skylark. (3803 Delridge Way SW)
Tonight’s featured Christmas lights are in that video clip sent by Jonathan, who says, “My 9-year-old neighbor set up a whole impressive light setup to music, pretty much all by himself. It’s something to see, for sure. They don’t always have the music going, but when they do, it’s really cool.” You’ll find this house in the 3400 block of 41st Ave SW, between Hinds and (updated) Manning.
Let us know about your favorite lights! editor@westseattleblog.com – and see our archive here.
Just found out about this – adding to the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide:
The Christmas People will host a complimentary meal for homeless, seniors, and others who need a meal on Sunday, December 25, 2016 from noon to 4 p.m. at Alki Masonic Center, 4736 40th Avenue SW. Marc Smason, trombonist, will provide entertainment. This event is entirely without cost as a public service.
Christmas People is a 501 (c) (3) not profit organization; we celebrate our 18th year of providing hot meals to homeless and seniors in the Greater Seattle Area. During the weekend, Christmas People will also prepare evening meals for various downtown shelters.
Donated homemade cookies are welcomed for dropoff at the Masonic Center 9 am-4 pm on December 23rd and 24th.
Until 9 tonight, the café side of Easy Street Records is transformed into a holiday-photo studio that’s nothing like your standard red-velvet-throne Santa scene. Cocoa Cris Cringle is there for his annual fun-and-fundraising photo sessions.
You can borrow hots and other props for your photo op with Cocoa Cris Cringle – or, just be yourself(ves):
$15 with a food or toy donation, or $20 without, is good for three photos sent to you, plus a hard copy printed right then and there. If you’re new ’round here and don’t know yet … Easy Street is on the northwest corner of California and Alaska in the historic Hamm Building, in the heart of The Junction.
With Christmas just a week away, we’ll be featuring lights every night. This one is a bit out of the way, so we wouldn’t have spotted it without a friend’s tip – we’re not sure if it’s an optical illusion or an atrium, but it appears the Christmas tree at this house is through the roof! After getting the tip, we went out for a look a short time ago. It’s on the east side of the 9600 block of Fauntleroy Way SW, a few blocks south of the ferry dock. And the street dead-ends a few doors down, so don’t head out in a big vehicle that will be tough to turn around. Some of the other homes on the street are brightly lit too, but nothing quite this out-of-the-box … er, house. Seen something unusual in YOUR neighborhood? editor@westseattleblog.com – thanks!
That’s part of the coats-and-cocoa crew from today’s Hometown Holidays donation drive at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market in The Junction – from left, Gareth from West Seattle Christian Church (which donated the cocoa), Theresa from the West Seattle Helpline (whose clothing bank Clothesline gets the donated coats), Shari from the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle (whose booth hosted the drive), and Lennae from the West Seattle High School Key Club (one of the youth groups with which the Kiwanis works). According to Lora from the West Seattle Junction Association, preliminary count is more than 200 donated coats – triple last year!

The lights are programmed to a variety of different Christmas Carols and the synchronized show runs nightly from about 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The lights will still be on after 9:00 pm, but without the music and synchronized programming.” (36th SW/SW Hanford)
We’ll be spotlighting neighborhood lights nightly for the rest of pre-Christmas week – know of something special? editor@westseattleblog.com – thanks!

Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor), with a pop-up in the loft, featuring two artists with cool gift possibilities – you have to see the eco-wearables by Shino Mikami of Uzura:
And cards and wearables by Claire Jauregui of Orange Twist:
Click’s open until 9 tonight – with treats in the loft, too – go shop! And while you’re in The Junction, you can also shop Thunder Road Guitars (4736 California SW: WSB sponsor) until 8 tonight. Lots of Hometown Holidays happenings in the days and nights ahead – highlights here!
A beautiful sight in a West Seattle backyard brought holiday cheer to “Awesome Avery” Berg and her family. We have reported before – here and here – on Avery, who was diagnosed with brain cancer just as she prepared to start middle school this fall. The photo and update are from friend Kelly Malloy:
She begins her second round of chemo today – and the community surprised the family on Tuesday by showing up in their back yard with candles and holiday songs to sing. Her dear friends Liza and Rachel coordinated this and it was AWESOME. (like Awesome Avery)
Caroling at Avery’s and seeing (at least) 50 people in her back yard was mind blowing, inspiring, brilliant, sweet, and just another reflection of the fabulous community of West Seattle.
Avery’s mom Kristie has continued to post updates from time to time here.
It’s been a holiday tradition at West Seattle’s Nucor Steel mill for many years – collecting food and money to make it a happier season for the people helped by the West Seattle Food Bank. And today was delivery day!
Judi Yazzolino from the WS Food Bank shares the update and photos:
Employees of Nucor Steel collected food and funds over the past month for the WSFB in their annual Holiday Food/Funds Drive. The food donated by employees totaled 4,180 pounds and employees contributed $2306. Nucor matches $2 for every employee donation (pound or $1), for a grand total of $16,150. Thank you to Nucor and all of its employees for helping our clients have a very happy holiday!
As a result of all these years of partnership, WS Food Bank honored Nucor last May with its first “Instrument of Change” award.

How often do you get to take a swing at a piñata with the help of a school principal? At Denny International Middle School – at least once a year. That’s Denny principal Jeff Clark in his legendary “Denny Dolphins blue” suit at last Friday night’s Posada Navideña holiday celebration on campus. Along with games and food, music and dance filled the night:
Some of the performers were students, including the Folklorico Club from Chief Sealth International High School next door:
And the Denny/Sealth Mariachi Band, with alumni joining students.
Denny’s Mariachi Club, by the way, starts up again in January, for any interested students. Meantime, the crowd was again delighted by guest stars Banda Vagos:
They’re a popular Seattle group performing the brass-based “banda” style of music:
And once they got going, some Posada-goers just had to dance:
It was a night for memories – Andrea LaVare snapped the Folklorico Club::
Thanks to Denny PTSA co-president Manuela Slye for the lineup on this year’s event, which also included activities including writing thank-you notes for teachers and, for any interested families, a chance to get clothing and supplies courtesy of Communities in Schools:
The Posada is now a longtime Denny holiday tradition – the first one was back in 2010

(Saturday photo by Clay Eals: At left, Pat Gedney talks with Southwest Seattle Historical Society volunteer Bobbie Meehan while contemplating the purchase of a blue, etched Alki Lighthouse during the Alternative Giving Fair)
Were you part of local holiday history last weekend? Judy Pickens tells WSB that many people opened their hearts and wallets during a first-of-its-kind holiday-giving event:
On Saturday, West Seattle residents dipped their toes into a different way of giving to family and friends by donating $6,895 to nonprofits during this area’s first Alternative Giving Fair. Hosted by Fauntleroy Church, the fair featured 15 local and international organizations that support elders, care for the natural world, feed the hungry, and promote healthy communities. Thanks, West Seattle, for bypassing more stuff, to give from the heart!
Still looking for holiday-giving opportunities? See the WSB Holiday Guide.

The ship travels with musical groups on board, serenading passengers as well as those on shore, visiting an ever-longer list of stops around Puget Sound, Lake Union, and Lake Washington during the holiday season. Its sailings continue nightly until Christmas Eve-Eve (December 23rd) – here’s the schedule on the Argosy site.
