 |   Holidays | West Seattle news

As usual this time of year, we’re updating the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide multiple times a day as new events/info comes in. A few things to mention today:

-You’ll find Thanksgiving information toward the top of the guide, including grocery-store hours for tomorrow and lists of restaurants and coffee shops that told us they plan to be open tomorrow, as well as info on the free community meals in Fauntleroy and South Park, and pre-turkey workouts.

-Looking for an early Christmas tree? We’ve just added three more places to the list in the Holiday Guide, after noticing tree arrivals while out on errands.

-Planning on Black Friday/Shop Small Saturday shopping? The guide includes that info for some local businesses too, and more to come by day’s end. (Added: Here’s the big Junction list.)

As mentioned, we’re updating the guide frequently and appreciate hearing directly from businesses, groups, event organizers, anyone with info that belongs in it – just e-mail us the details at editor@westseattleblog.com – thank you!

HOLIDAY GIVING: Preschoolers’ lesson in math and kindness

20161117_144745

Thanks to Holy Rosary Preschool teacher Tauna Evans for the photo from the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive: “This is our Pre-K class posing after sorting and counting the collected food.” Final tally: 110 cans!

P.S. Looking for ways to give this season? The list of donation drives in the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide keeps growing. If you have one to which the public can contribute, please let us know so we can add it – editor@westseattleblog.com – thank you!

With Thanksgiving days away, we’ve added even more to the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide:

ONGOING WAYS TO GIVE: Many businesses and organizations have ongoing donation drives all season long. The photo above is just in from the West Seattle YMCA (4515 36th SW; WSB sponsor), where the Giving Tree is now up:

The giving spirit is alive this season, even in a construction zone! Each year, the West Seattle & Fauntleroy YMCA hosts a Giving Tree, which is full of gift requests from youth that attend Y programs. The Giving Tree is an opportunity for these young people to receive a special gift from their Y family. This year, over 1,000 tags will decorate the tree.

Y Members and our West Seattle community can make a difference!

1. Select a tag off the tree, which provides a single gift request.
2. Purchase the gift.
3. Return new, unwrapped gift AND tag to either Y location by SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10. (Why so early? Most of our youth attend Seattle Public Schools. Gifts must be sorted and distributed before school is out for winter break.)

You’ll find a tree at each of the Y’s two locations (Fauntleroy is at 9140 California SW). And find many more ways to give in the Holiday Guide.

INFO FOR THANKSGIVING DAY: As we do every year, we’re compiling a list of restaurants that will be open on Thanksgiving Day and/or night. It’s not finished just yet (takes a lot of phone calling, since most of this info isn’t online) but what we have so far is here. That’s also linked in the Holiday Guide, where you will find the list of grocery-store hours (who’s open/when, and who’s closed) for the holiday, as well as an in-progress list of coffee shops. Also for Thanksgiving – community dinners and workouts! The Thanksgiving section is right at the top, at westseattleblog.com/holidayguide.

P.S. We’re updating the guide at least once a day, and your holiday event/info (now through New Year’s) is still more than welcome – editor@westseattleblog.com – thanks!

West Seattle Nursery‘s holiday open house – on until 5 pm – is your first chance to get a look inside its just-completed greenhouse building, full of plants and gifts just in time for the holidays. The nursery’s outdoor grounds are especially festive, too:

The first trees – mostly Noble fir – arrived a few days ago.

But back to the new building: Shortly after walking in, we found its architect, Parie Hines of LD Arch Design (WSB sponsor), who demurred that it was an “easy” project.

That’s American Legion Post 160 commander Keith Hughes with the two U.S. Coast Guardsmen from Everett who came to tonight’s Veterans Day dinner at the post in The Triangle with a gift: A flag that flew on a USCG Port Security Unit 313 patrol boat while it was under way on maritime-security patrol on the Legion’s 97th anniversary, March 15, 2016. They explained the unit wanted to thank the post for the care packages they had sent, and then described where and when the flag had flown:

Other gifts at the dinner – thank-you cards for veterans, created by students at Madison Middle School:

The dinner is an annual tradition at Post 160, free to local veterans, active-duty personnel, guard and reserve members, and their families. Tonight’s attendance was the best ever.

Commander Hughes, who served in the Army, read a well-known verse of thanks to those who fought for the rights our country holds dear:

And as we left, we passed another family arriving, with a Troop 282 Boy Scout whose grandmother and aunt are veterans, though too far away to come along. They brought gifts too … cherry and apple pies.

We’re looking for donations of either a 10 – 12 lb. turkey or $15 to cover the cost of over 300 turkeys and fixings that we will purchase to distribute to our neighbors in need, so they can have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with their families.

Our second Turkey Drive will be next Thursday, 11/17 at Easy Street Café on California & Alaska from 4 – 7 pm. You can just drive by, toss us the turkey or money, and keep on driving if you’d like!

Donations will also be accepted anytime Monday – Friday from 9 am – 3 pm at the West Seattle Food Bank on the corner of 35th & Morgan

And not long after that – as previewed here – Post 160 hosts its annual free Veterans Day spaghetti dinner for veterans, active-duty servicepeople, Guard and Reserve members and families, 5:30-7 pm, 3618 SW Alaska.

WEST SEATTLE VETERANS DAY: 2 invitations from American Legion Post 160

|    Comments Off on WEST SEATTLE VETERANS DAY: 2 invitations from American Legion Post 160
 |   Holidays | West Seattle news

(WSB photo from 2014 dinner)

This Friday is Veterans Day, and West Seattle’s American Legion Post 160 has two invitations: All are welcome to join them in placing The Junction’s flags in the morning; then in the evening, veterans, active-duty servicemembers, reserve, guard members, and families are invited to a free dinner:

Veterans Day, the annual time for remembering the end of World War I and the brave Americans who served in the “war to end all wars,” also draws from the news headlines of the day.

“What we now call ‘Veterans Day’ began as ‘Armistice Day.’ It is historically significant that this day continue to be observed on the month, day and hour that the guns fell silent in World War I at 11a.m., Nov. 11, 1918,” Keith Hughes, commander of West Seattle American Legion Post 160, said.

While the day has strong historical roots, current events continue to add meaning to the day.

“Today, thousands of Americans are serving in uniform. They sacrifice in the war on terror and in hundreds of locations around the globe so we may remain free. They, too, are veterans,” Hughes said.

To mark Veterans Day in West Seattle, American Legion Post 160 invites all currently serving; active, reserve and guard members and those who served in the past, along with their families, to join us for our complimentary Annual Italian Dinner. The dinner will be held on November 11, 2016, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. The West Seattle Post is located at 3618 SW Alaska St.

Volunteers, coordinated by American Legion Post 160 members, will also line the Alaska Junction with United States flags starting at 9:00 am. If you would like to participate, show up at the northeast corner of Alaska and California five minutes prior. The flags will be taken down at 4:00 pm. All ages are encouraged to participate.

The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veterans’ organization. Founded early in 1919, the delegates to the first National Convention in Minneapolis broke from business sessions to parade down a main street in a heavy snowstorm at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 to mark the anniversary of the armistice.

WEST SEATTLE THANKSGIVING: Free community dinner @ Hall at Fauntleroy, and how you can help

(WSB photo from 2015)

One of West Seattle’s most beloved Thanksgiving traditions continues again this year. And this year there’s also word of multiple ways to help, if you want to. Judy Pickens shares the announcement:

The Hall @ Fauntleroy will be a lively place on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 24) when Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes hosts its 18th annual free community meal. The sit-down dinner of turkey and all the trimmings will run noon until 3 PM and is open to anyone who needs a hot meal or just a warm and festive place to be on the holiday.

Volunteers can give a hand in one of three ways:

– Offer to help for an hour to welcome guests, pour coffee, or simply mingle with folks. Call 206-932-1059 or find the sign-up form here.

– Donate socks, blankets, or warm coats (child and adult sizes).

– Donate a dessert.

The hosts will welcome donated items 9 AM – 2 PM on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at their office in Sodo (4101 Airport Way S.) or 10 AM – noon on Thanksgiving morning at the Hall @ Fauntleroy (9131 California Ave. SW, south end of the Fauntleroy Schoolhouse Community Center).

HAPPENING NOW: ‘Free food!’ @ West Seattle Thriftway’s Holiday Taste

Approaching the south entrance of West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) right now, the tent and the sunshine might transport you back to summer … but no, this isn’t another benefit barbecue. The tent is where you can sample raclette, as part of Thriftway’s Holiday Taste event, on until 7 pm. “Free food!” as one store staffer explained to visitors. You’ll find the rest of it happening indoors:
