As we continue showcasing West Seattle’s brightest neighborhood lights – thanks to Duane and Denise Davis for e-mailing to say their light-laden display is happening again this year at 4152 46th SW, just east of Genesee Hill. More than 14,000 lights – about two-thirds LEDs, with mini-incandescent lights “and 300 big C9 bulbs.” They’ll be up through January 15th, the Davises say. And you’ll see other lights in their neighborhood, to the north:

For some people Christmas is not “the most wonderful time of the year.” It might stir up feelings of sadness and depression, whether it will be the first Christmas without a loved one, or the person lost someone around the Christmas season and this is a painful reminder each year. It might be because of other kinds of loss – loss of a job, a divorce or break-up, a feeling of grief and despair over the future of our country and the world, or even the loss of faith. There is a need for a space to not be forced to be jolly but to acknowledge our grief and pain and depression. The Longest Night Service is that place. It is a service of music, readings and prayers and candle lighting. It is open to everyone no matter the circumstance. If this would be of help to you this Christmas season or if you know someone who could benefit from being with us that night, please invite them and come along with them.

Just found out about this – adding to the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide:
The Christmas People will host a complimentary meal for homeless, seniors, and others who need a meal on Sunday, December 25, 2016 from noon to 4 p.m. at Alki Masonic Center, 4736 40th Avenue SW. Marc Smason, trombonist, will provide entertainment. This event is entirely without cost as a public service.
Christmas People is a 501 (c) (3) not profit organization; we celebrate our 18th year of providing hot meals to homeless and seniors in the Greater Seattle Area. During the weekend, Christmas People will also prepare evening meals for various downtown shelters.
Donated homemade cookies are welcomed for dropoff at the Masonic Center 9 am-4 pm on December 23rd and 24th.
Until 9 tonight, the café side of Easy Street Records is transformed into a holiday-photo studio that’s nothing like your standard red-velvet-throne Santa scene. Cocoa Cris Cringle is there for his annual fun-and-fundraising photo sessions.
You can borrow hots and other props for your photo op with Cocoa Cris Cringle – or, just be yourself(ves):
$15 with a food or toy donation, or $20 without, is good for three photos sent to you, plus a hard copy printed right then and there. If you’re new ’round here and don’t know yet … Easy Street is on the northwest corner of California and Alaska in the historic Hamm Building, in the heart of The Junction.

With Christmas just a week away, we’ll be featuring lights every night. This one is a bit out of the way, so we wouldn’t have spotted it without a friend’s tip – we’re not sure if it’s an optical illusion or an atrium, but it appears the Christmas tree at this house is through the roof! After getting the tip, we went out for a look a short time ago. It’s on the east side of the 9600 block of Fauntleroy Way SW, a few blocks south of the ferry dock. And the street dead-ends a few doors down, so don’t head out in a big vehicle that will be tough to turn around. That’s part of the coats-and-cocoa crew from today’s Hometown Holidays donation drive at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market in The Junction – from left, Gareth from West Seattle Christian Church (which donated the cocoa), Theresa from the West Seattle Helpline (whose clothing bank Clothesline gets the donated coats), Shari from the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle (whose booth hosted the drive), and Lennae from the West Seattle High School Key Club (one of the youth groups with which the Kiwanis works). According to Lora from the West Seattle Junction Association, preliminary count is more than 200 donated coats – triple last year!

It’s a cold but clear Saturday night, and nothing could be Christmas-ier for a big night of Santa photos at the Menashe Family Lights on Beach Drive. “Santa Al” is making his annual appearance there until 10 tonight, and a box marked with the West Seattle Food Bank logo awaits your donation of nonperishable food:

You’ll find Santa under a canopy right along the sidewalk in front of the famous house, which is at 5605 Beach Drive SW.

FAMILY HOLIDAY CRAFT ACTIVITY: 1-5 pm at Tap Station, 1-5 pm. “We’ll be doing guided craft activities (ornaments, decorations, cards, etc) for kids, offering hot chocolate and soda for the youngsters and as always there will be beer, wine, and cider for grownups. We’ll be playing holiday movies all day long might even be doing some sing-along music favorites. This is also a clothing and food drive for WestSide Baby and the West Seattle Food Bank. Come and join us for our favorite annual tradition: running and Christmas Light viewing!! We will have a leisurely 2-3 mile run (or walk) to view the beautiful lights. Meet at West Seattle Runner and you will get the route. This fun group run is anything but competitive, so please, leave your racing heart at home. We hope you will wear your Santa hat, elf ears, and such, but insist you have on some reflective and lights so you can see and be seen. Kids, dogs, and cats are welcome. We will gather at the shop afterward for cookies and cocoa and cider.
