West Seattle, Washington
26 Tuesday
In case you haven’t seen this in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar – tomorrow night you have the chance to help a local nonprofit school while enjoying an outdoor family-music concert. Dani & the Bee are performing as a fundraiser Thursday night (August 19th) for the Community School of West Seattle. The concert is at 6 pm in White Center Heights Park (7th SW and SW 102nd). It’s free to attend but “donations are greatly appreciated,” says CSWS board president Whitney Young. You can donate/RSVP by going here..
The United Communities of Laos are continuing to work toward building a cultural center, and this week you can order flower bouquets with a pickup spot in West Seattle. The group explains, “Our goal is to raise $25k so we can complete our feasibility study with our consultant. This will bring us one step closer to starting a capital campaign and building a cultural center that supports our Hmong, Khmu, and Lao ethnic communities and preserve our unique cultures.” The mixed bouquets are $25. They’re also selling vegetable boxes for $18 but the pickup locations for those are only on the Eastside. Here’s the flyer about both; the local bouquet pickups will be 9:30 am-noon this Saturday (August 21st) at the West Seattle YMCA (36th SW and SW Snoqualmie; WSB sponsor). You can order bouquets – and learn more about the communities and the plan – by going here. (If you don’t want to buy flowers but do want to donate, you can do that at the same link.)
Still time to get over to Walt Hundley Playfield and add food donations to help Highline Premier FC “Fill the Goal”! It’s the soccer organization’s annual food drive and field day, with drills and games for kids:
The playfield is in High Point at 34th/Myrtle, and the event is on until 6.
If you haven’t already seen these in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar – you have three opportunities to make a difference by donating food and other items this weekend:
SATURDAY – ADMIRAL CHURCH: 11 am-3 pm Saturday, the church at 4320 SW Hill is hosting another dropoff food drive. Pet food will be accepted too.
SATURDAY – SOCCER FIELD DAY + FOOD DRIVE: 4-6 pm Saturday at Walt Hundley Playfield (34th SW and SW Myrtle), Highline Premier FC is hosting a field day and food drive. Even if you’re not participating in the field-day activities, you’re invited to bring food and/or cash donations to benefit the West Seattle Food Bank.
SUNDAY – KIDS’ CLOTHING AND FOOD DRIVE: The Westside Interfaith Network is supporting 13 recently arrived families from Nicaragua and needs children’s clothing, so that’s being collected as well as food at this Sunday’s Alki UCC donation drive. Men’s casual work clothing and hygiene items always welcome too. 11 am-3 pm outside 6115 SW Hinds.

If you can donate blood, now’s the time. You can even set an appointment for upcoming West Seattle pop-ups, to donate without leaving the peninsula. Here’s the message Bloodworks Northwest asked us to share:
Transfusion rates are 10% higher than normal due to hospitals catching up on a backlog of procedures from COVID. Meanwhile, our community blood supply is at precarious levels due to the PNW heatwave which caused many donors to cancel or no-show to appointments. Additionally some donation sites had to close due to A/C in the room not being able to keep up with the extreme outside temperatures.
Now, more than ever, we need to be community-ready and strengthen our blood supply. Every person can do more this summer for our community. With every donation, we can save more lives in our community. Join us by donating blood every time you’re eligible to give and learn more about how you can win incredible prizes at savemorelivesgiveblood.org (fill out form to enter).
When you donate during the month of July, you will automatically be entered to win a Peloton Bike! More info HERE.
Masks and appointments are required. Please sign up NOW at one of these West Seattle locations/dates!

Our area’s largest senior/rehab center, Providence Mount St. Vincent, needs some immediate help to keep its vulnerable residents and workers cool. Here’s the announcement:
Help Residents and Caregivers at The Mount beat the heat.
While the team at The Mount is working diligently to keep 300 residents cool, safe and comfortable — living and working in an almost 100-year-old building without central air-conditioning during this heat wave has increased the need for help. Donations of large (14,000 BTU) free-standing air conditioning units, commercial-grade Move and Cool units and both small and large fans would be greatly appreciated.
We are extremely grateful for the initial community response with 7 small AC units and two fans donated over the weekend.
However, with nearly 100,000 square feet of resident living spaces to cool, more donations are urgently needed given the lack of inventory in stores. New units or used in excellent condition may be dropped off at The Mount’s east entrance at 4831 35th Ave SW. If transportation is an issue, please call 206-937-3701, extension 28035 and pick up may be arranged.
The Providence Mount St. Vincent Foundation is also seeking cash donations to support the purchase of air conditioning units as any become available and in preparation for the remainder of the summer as temperatures more typically reach the upper 80’s and into the 90’s.
Cash donations can be made here.
What a way to celebrate turning 70! At right in our photo is Lou Cutler, the retired PE teacher who is also a longtime Make-A-Wish volunteer raising money for MAW every year with a walkathon at his old school, Pathfinder K-8. Two weeks ago, Lou spent two days walking laps there with students in a pandemic-modified version of his annual fundraiser; the laps totaled a half-marathon, 13+ miles, and today he’s replicating that, with a 13+-mile walk around West Seattle with friends, family, and supporters. We photographed them leaving the Pathfinder campus on Pigeon Point just after 10 am; Lou said the plan was to head northwest to Alki, then south to Beach Drive and Lincoln Park, looping back northeast to finish back at Pathfinder. He says he’s not worried about the heat – “We’ve got water!” He’s also hoping to return to his classic “Laps With Lou” format next year – one day of lapping the school track with one lap for every year of his age, so that’s 71 laps next year. P.S. You can support the Make-A-Wish kids that Lou’s long supported by donating here.
ADDED: Afterward, Lou told us via email, “It took us a little longer than I planned, but we finally made it back to Pathfinder about 7 hours after we left, though we had lots of fun stops along the way and were not in a rush to finish.” His fundraising for this year is getting closer to the goal, too, and he’s still welcoming more donations, to make more kids’ wishes come true.
The White Center Food Bank, which serves part of West Seattle too, will soon lose the National Guard members who’ve been assisting during the pandemic, so its volunteer need is greater than ever. At a reader’s suggestion, we asked WCFB for more info about volunteering – here’s what they sent:
Interested in food justice? Volunteers know what goes on behind the scenes at the White Center Food Bank, and are critical to ensuring that our community is able to access the food they need. We are currently seeking volunteers for a variety of roles, and our need is high.
All volunteer shifts are during our business hours: Monday 9am-5pm and Tuesday- Friday 8 am-4 pm. If you can only help out once a month, or sporadically, please reach out, we’d still love to find a way to help you serve our WCFB community!
Volunteers 15 and older can volunteer alone, with a parent or guardian’s permission. Volunteers 8-14 are welcome to volunteer with a trusted adult in their life. Call or email Heather Crandall at 206-717-2527 or heather@whitecenterfoodbank.org to learn more, or you can apply to be a volunteer on our website at: www.whitecenterfoodbank.org/volunteer-application.

Ride your bike with a purpose in your community by delivering groceries by bike for the White Center Food Bank: Every Thursday starting from 9:30 am to 11 am – 30 minute to 1 hour ride depending on route. The White Center Food Bank is looking for 7 volunteer riders to deliver bags and boxes of groceries to neighbors in and around the White Center and Southwest Seattle neighborhoods. The White Center Food Bank uses bags to package their groceries, so each volunteer rider will need to be able to carry at least two 20-pound bags of groceries on their bike. Having a cargo bike or bike trailer is prefered. If you don’t have a cargo bike or bike trailer, let us know – we have a whole fleet of bike trailers that we are more than happy to lend out! We’ll bring them to the food bank for them and you can drop them back off at the food bank after your delivery ride!
Interested in volunteering for this weekly grocery delivery and produce rescue ride?
Just follow these 2 steps!
Step #1 – Click here to fill out our simple volunteer sign-up form for this opportunity
Step #2 – After signing up a link to the route selection tool will be sent to you the Monday before the Thursday delivery rider that you sign up for!
Though Seattle Public Schools is operating some summer-meal sites, not all families/students can get to them. In High Point, volunteers are needed for summer meal delivery. The program is operated by United Way of King County, and they asked us to announce the volunteer opportunity. You can find details and an application by going here.
You’ve got two hours until sunset … and almost two hours left with Thunder Road Guitars (WSB sponsor) in the house at Best of Hands Barrelhouse (35th/Webster), for the launch of No Surrender, a new brew with proceeds benefiting organizations working to save live-music venues. Outside, adjacent to the Best of Hands patio, visit the TRG table for $5 raffle tickets to turn up the volume on the cause – you could win a swag bag with a pint glass, gift card, and more. And if you haven’t had dinner yet, the Taqueria La Original truck is there too:
What about the beer, you ask? BoH describes it: “NO SURRENDER HAZY IPA features a boatload of STRATA & SABRO hops on a generous, pillowy body. Combining our mutual love for The Boss & for live music, this beer’s name is a nod to the Bruce Springsteen song of the same name. Our mission is to help the struggling independent music venues of WA state, devastated like so many industries by the pandemic. We need the arts and music more than ever. We will see them resurrected. As the song says, ‘no retreat, baby, no surrender’.” The festivities are on until 9 pm.
Scout dad Jason sent the announcement:
Cub Scout Pack 799 in Arbor Heights would like to inform the West Seattle community that we are conducting a food drive through the next two weekends. Scouts and parents will place food drive hangers on doors this Juneteenth, Saturday 6/19, and then return the following Saturday, June 26th, to collect any nonperishable items, bagged, from the locations where we distributed hangers (by noon/midday).
This drive is our Scouts’ final service activity heading into summer. With public school meals-by-bus and home delivery ceasing tomorrow, we hope to boost West Seattle Food Bank‘s mobile services through July (note SPS will have distribution sites operating during summer). If you see a Scout in your neighborhood putting out hangers, or find a hanger on your door, please consider donating.
And if folks miss our pickup date and still wish to donate after June 26th, they can drop off donations at the West Seattle Food bank, or place items in a “Little Free Pantry” nearby.
See the following link for items the West Seattle Food Bank currently accepts: westseattlefoodbank.org/donate-food
