Less than two weeks until the Fauntleroy Fall Festival – time to start planning your cake, if you’re up for baking one! From Judy Pickens:

The judging of decorated cakes and an old-fashioned cake walk are popular activities at the Fauntleroy Fall Festival, this year on Sunday, October 21, 2:00-5:00 pm, and cake donations are needed for both. Demonstrate your creativity by decorating a cake with a fall, Fauntleroy, or West Seattle theme. Judging will be by level of difficulty and both adults and kids are encouraged to enter. If decorating isn’t your thing, simply bake and frost a donation for the cake walk. It can be just one layer, a small sheet cake, or a cluster of cupcakes. Plan to bring your creation to Fellowship Hall in Fauntleroy Church by 1:00 pm on festival Sunday.

The festival happens in and around the church and schoolhouse, across the street from each other (and there’s a crossing guard during the festival!) at 9131 and 9140 California SW.

Your next chance to help WestSide Baby amass diapers for local babies/toddlers in need is just days away. This year Holy Rosary School is holding a diaper drive throughout its WestFest festival – 6-10 pm Friday, 10 am-10 pm Saturday at the school, off SW Genesee north of 42nd SW. From organizers:

Did you know you can’t use food stamps to buy diapers and most day cares require you bring your own? An undiapered child is a health and safety concern that affects our entire community. That’s why we’re holding a diaper drive in support of WestSide Baby.

You’ll find collection bins all around the festival grounds. (Not familiar with WS Baby? Here’s what they do.) While you’re there, enjoy WestFest – games, rides, entertainment, food!

2018 West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival! How to be part of it

(WSB photo from 2017 West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival)

It’s a little chilly, a little cloudy – technically still summer for another two weeks but it’s really feeling like fall. So – it’s time to talk about your opportunities for being part of this year’s West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival! 10 am-2 pm Sunday, October 28th, in the street, in the heart of The Junction. New here? Here’s how the West Seattle Junction Association explains it:

Now in our seventh year, the Junction’s Harvest Festival has become a favorite event for West Seattle. With California Ave closed, the streets are filled with colorful farmers and local vendors, fun art activities for kids supported by West Seattle businesses and community groups, plus a costume parade lead by West Seattle High’s marching band, the Farmers Market Applepalooza and a root beer garden. The Harvest Festival is good community fun!

(Here’s our as-it-happened coverage from last year.)

*WSB is proud to be the Harvest Festival media sponsor again this year. The festival welcomes sponsors to help cover the costs of presenting a free and fun event for the community – want to be one? Go here to sign up!

*Can your business/organization provide a free arts-and-crafts activity booth during the festival? Go here to sign up!

*Can you provide chili for the West Seattle Food Bank-benefiting Chili Cookoff at the Harvest Festival? (Note that you must cook and prepare the chili in a commercial restaurant/facility.) To sign up, e-mail lora@wsjunction.org!

*The Root Beer Garden will be back for a second year and needs volunteers. Can you help? Go here to sign up!

And of course – you can be part of the festival by just showing up as a participant, spectator, chili taster, costume-parader, trick-or-treater … Whatever your plan, we’ll see you in The Junction on October 28th!

Just one week until the next Mountain Fest at Camp Long! Here’s the reminder from Seattle Parks:

Join Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Friends of Camp Long for Camp Long Mountain Fest, a celebration of Seattle’s vibrant outdoor community and Camp Long’s place in mountaineering history. This free, family-friendly event will take place at the Camp Long Environmental Learning Center (5200 35th Ave. SW) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2018.

All participants of Mountain Fest will enjoy a day of free access to rock climbing, rappelling, mountain-themed games and activities, and opportunities for nature-based learning. Event participants can develop outdoor living skills and experience an array of programs offered by Camp Long and other local organizations.

Mountain Fest activities will be made accessible to all people, regardless of their experience level, allowing beginners, intermediate, and advanced climbers and adventurers of all ages to enjoy the event*.

The goal of Mountain Fest is to continue the tradition started by Judge William G. Long and Clark Schurman, two of the founders of Camp Long, of providing access to outdoor recreation and education to all people, particularly underserved youth.

For more information about the event, please call 206-684-7415. Camp Long Mountain Fest is sponsored by Seattle Parks and Recreation, Associated Recreation Council, Mountain Madness, Vertical World, 4-H, and the Falconer.

*Space for climbing and ropes course is limited, so we encourage early arrival to the festival and sign-up. Waivers are required for all climbing activities and will be available at the lodge. Participants need to wear closed-toed shoes. High ropes course is limited to height and weight that fit harnesses and to those who have the physical ability to participate safely.

Joining a breakdance workshop with the DogPound Crew – above are Dan, Robert, and Sammy – was one of the many ways to spend the second and final day of the 2018 Arts In Nature Festival, presented at Camp Long by the Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association. The dancers were inside the park’s historic lodge, but much more was happening outside – especially at the cabins:

Above, at Cabin 1, Degenerate Art Ensemble‘s “Skeleton Flower Seed Ceremony” invited people to anonymously share their stories of dealing with challenges. Below, at Cabin 7, Paul Kikuchi presented an interactive sound installation in collaboration with his brother Joel Kikuchi:

Visitors at “Robotic Ensemble” played traditional Japanese instruments remotely using low-fi robotic hands, blending with pre-recorded soundscapes. Meantime, at Cabin 8:

That’s part of Celeste Cooning‘s “Cut Paper Meets Digital Media.” All around Camp Long, art was happening, including Angelina Villalobos creating a painting:

This is the third year that DNDA has presented the festival, whose founding organization Nature Consortium became part of DNDA in 2016.

Dog Day @ West Seattle Beer and Music Festival

1:43 PM: The final afternoon of the first-ever West Seattle Beer and Music Festival is under way, and you’re invited to bring your dog today. The spotlight right now is on the City Dog Magazine Cover Dog Model Search, on stage here at the Alki Masonic Center in The Junction (4736 40th SW), with the $10 entry fee for that competition benefiting a rescue organization – and getting your dog primped for the occasion with experts to assist.

It’s not mandatory that you have a canine companion, of course – you do have to be 21+ to enter. If you were here Friday and/or Saturday, you are invited back today, too. Even if you’re not a major beer aficionado, other beverages are available courtesy of local purveyors – for example, Jay and Mike from Whisky West in Morgan Junction (WSB sponsor) is here with a cocktail they’re calling “Bring Us a Shrubbery”:

In it – Noble Oak bourbon, house-made strawberry shrub, Montenegro, simple syrup, and basil. Find it (and other local purveyors’ offerings in the Spirit Lounge area.) The festival continues until 6 pm; ticket info’s here.

2:21 PM: The dog judging’s under way now; host Joey Jeannot‘s announcing the contest onstage. He’s also pointed out that today’s food offerings include tacos from Matador as well as hot dogs and Sisters and Brothers Nashville-style fried-chicken sandwiches.

3:04 PM: 4-year-old Coral won this session of the model search!

(Substituted for our original cameraphone photo, above are Coral and her humans Audrey and Erica)

The competition’s over, but dogs remain welcome at the festival today.

DJ Indica Jones is spinning until 5 pm.

DAY 1: What you can see, hear, and do at the 2018 Arts In Nature Festival

Just back from Camp Long, where the first day of the Arts In Nature Festival continues until about 8:30 tonight. One of the unusual sights – Aaron Haba and more than 900 marigold plants. Tomorrow, they’ll be offered free to festivalgoers, and he hopes people will send him photos when they bloom – his plan is to turn the photos into a collage. We also noted West Seattle artist Natalie Fobes‘s work “Spring/Fall Convergence”:

While our photographer was at the festival, we received a note from Natalie, who explained:

This eight-piece exhibit celebrates the nature around us.

Each mobile is made of a single photograph that is printed on the front and back of one sheet of paper. Fall is represented on one side with Spring on the other.

As the wind catches the mobiles, two-dimensional photography becomes a kinetic three-dimensional experience for the viewer.

For the last couple years I’ve tried to figure out how to make photography more interactive and more than two-dimensional prints on a wall. For this exhibit I used over 800 fishing swivels and jewelry findings to put the mobiles together. (My apologies to the fishing community for buying all the size 10 swivels at Big 5 multiple times in the last few months!)

Thanks to the DNDA for choosing me as one of the artists for the Festival.

Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association, now parent organization to the festival-founding Nature Consortium, presents Arts In Nature, an experience for creating as well as viewing.

All ages are welcome to do that. And the arts are spoken and written as well as visual:

That’s Seth Zuckerman reading essays. The festival is indoor-outdoor … with artists and art throughout the park (which is at 5200 35th SW) including inside the historic lodge. Explore the website for full details, including the schedule and ticket info, before you go – highlights in the hours ahead are onstage in the field, with Naomi Wachira at 6 pm, Nikkita Oliver at 6:50, and music headliner Rev. Pat Wright and the Total Experience Gospel Choir at 7:15. If you don’t get there tonight, the festival runs noon-6 pm Sunday too.

PHOTOS: 2018 West Seattle Car Show – see the winners!

11:48 AM: The rainshower’s over on Puget Ridge and spectators continue wandering the 11th annual West Seattle Car Show on the north side of the South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor) campus! Show admission is free and you can get lunch for only $5:

The Kiwanis Club of West Seattle is grilling burgers and hot dogs this year – you can get one with chips and water for only $5. That’s also what you’ll pay for tasting (five tastes, we hear) inside the Northwest Wine Academy, adjacent to the show zone:

Free kids’ activities inside, too. Back to the cars – bright colors under the gray skies!

West Seattle Autoworks and Swedish Automotive (WSB sponsors) are co-presenting the show this year, and proceeds are supporting SSC’s Automotive Technology program (which you can tour while you’re here) – you can help by buying 50/50 Raffle tickets ($1 each or 25 for $20) at the show tent on the east side of the lot – T-shirts for sale too, plus that’s where you can cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award. (Trophies get handed out starting at 2, so get here by then!)

1:44 PM: The winners have been notified and are moving up to their front. If you were still planning to come to the show, hurry! Meantime, one of the nice folks who have stopped by our booth to say hi (thanks, everybody!) shared some photos from a West Seattle car show of the past:

The Alki car show called it quits some years back. The photo provider said the pics were from the late ’80s/early ’90s. Meantime, we’ll update this with today’s winners later!

Pat Wright, who’s talking about retirement, so this might be one of your last chances to see and hear her! Festival hours are noon-9 pm Saturday and noon-6 pm Sunday; tickets are discounted when you buy online in advance, so do that here ASAP! (WSB is a co-sponsor of this year’s festival.)

Still time to get to this year’s Duwamish River Festival (at Duwamish Waterway Park, 7900 10th Ave. S., until 5 pm), where you can learn about the river by getting out onto it, or talking to people about it.

That’s James Rasmussen, coordinator of the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition, from whom we found out there’s a community meeting Wednesday about June’s barge fire on the river. (More on that in a separate story.) Along with information, the festival is also a cultural celebration:

Dancers from the Somali Youth Community Center were onstage while we were there – we published the full entertainment lineup in today’s daily highlights list. They were followed by Vietnamese community performers, including a dancer who specializes in cha-cha:

And the many organizations and city departments there include Seattle Parks, with some hands-on education about river wildlife:

Go learn, play, and watch!

SPF30, PM REPORT: Sub Pop Records’ Alki celebration crescendo

(FOR COVERAGE FROM EARLIER IN THE DAY, go here)

6:58 PM: Evening is here and the final frenetic few hours of Sub Pop Records’ 30th-birthday party SPF30 are beginning. The crowd is thickening by the minute, and some are watching from the water:

Mudhoney‘s set is minutes away on the Harsh Realm stage at 57th/Alki. Shabazz Palaces is wrapping their set on the east side of the Bathhouse. More to come!

7:39 PM: Having some challenges with one signal provider so we’re behind on evening images. We will of course add when we can! Meanwhile, eyes on the sky:

Only the briefest of showers in the past six-plus hours. Just needs to hold out a few more.

8:32 PM: As featured in our first report, here’s the KEXP video stream:

At 9 pm, they’re scheduled to stream the last act of the night, Father John Misty. Here’s their clip of Beach House, the 8 pm band:

This is all supposed to end at 10 – remember that The Junction invites you to downtown West Seattle’s afterparty, including a DJ at West 5 (4539 California SW; WSB sponsor).

9:12 PM: Our Mudhoney clip remains stuck in cell hell. But Barry Devenney sent this photo of the crowd, during the band’s last song:

We just caught part of Father John Misty’s set, too. Lots more to add when we get back to HQ.

12:06 AM: Evening scenes! The crowd:

Hot Snakes:

Fastbacks:

Shabazz Palaces:

Beach House:

Mudhoney:

Here’s video by Tony Welch:

Father John Misty:

(Added Sunday: Video by Mark Jaroslaw:)

And as the party wrapped … Admiral Way was lined with people awaiting various forms of transportation, while the big tour-bus-size shuttles provided by Sub Pop circulated past.

P.S. We’re also adding more to our first report, which covered the afternoon and very-early evening.

SPF30, 1ST REPORT: Sub Pop party is rocking Alki, rain and shine

(SPF30 INFOLINKS: Music schedule here … transportation info here … food truck/vendor/etc. list here … video streaming here)

1:36 PM: At the Punky Stage on Alki Playfield, Caspar Babypants sang “Here Comes the Sun” shortly after opening his set at SPF30

It seems to have worked – we’re in a sunbreak as we type, starting our coverage of the huge Sub Pop Records 30th-birthday party, which is on at 4 stages (plus beer gardens, tents, and more) until 10 pm. The playfield is paradise for kids – along the west side, a big gathering of bouncy toys:

In the middle of the playfield, vendor/community tents include Alki Elementary PTA, steps from their school (here’s what they’re selling):

And the C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor) tent makes its debut, with cold brew:

Our coverage is just getting started. If you’re headed here, a few things you should know – really, don’t even try to park within a mile of Alki – we tried it before 1 pm and can vouch for the neighborhoods south of Admiral being full up. Meantime, Carolyn Newman sends a photo of the wait for the Water Taxi shuttle at Seacrest:

(Here’s all the Water Taxi info for today.) If you just can’t get here – KEXP is video-streaming some of the bands. Clicking the “play” button for this YouTube window should get you to their stream:

Here’s the streaming schedule.

2:18 PM: We’re still near the Punky stage, where The Not-Its are playing now.

Also among the organizations in mid-playfield booths, the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, beneficiaries of some fundraising today including the guitar that’s being auctioned … demonstrated here by West Seattle’s highest-ranking politician:

(If you’re new, he’s King County Executive Dow Constantine.) Thanks to Clay Eals for that photo. Want to read about and/or bid on the guitar? Go here. Also note that SWSHS’s Log House Museum here on Alki (61st SW/SW Stevens) IS open today, and you can check out the new “Sound Spots” music exhibit there until 4 pm.

3:23 PM UPDATE: We’ve just wandered the rest of the site. Most of the food trucks are along 59th just south of Alki Ave (with a few others scattered elsewhere):

59th is also where you’ll find bike parking, on the tennis court:

Along Alki Ave. are the three stages – Loma just performed at the Flippity-Flop stage on the east side of Alki Bathhouse:

Nearby, just west of the KEXP booth, a water-bottle-refilling station:

In general, it’s not too crowded yet – still room to roam from the streets to the spectator zones. And the weather has behaved for the past few hours.

5:17 PM: The crowd is building. Here’s a quick clip of Clipping, last hour:

Each of the three main stages has two acts ahead, including the Fastbacks, scheduled to get going about now at the Loser stage (west side of Alki Bathhouse), Hot Snakes also set to have started minutes ago at the Harsh Realm stage on Alki Ave. at 57th. Meantime, transportation is still busy – someone we know was passed by enough full Route 50 buses to give up and walk here.

6:03 PM: The two aforementioned bands:

LATE NIGHT NOTES: We’ve added a few photos above. And if you haven’t already seen it, our evening coverage continued here.

Anything you still want to know? We’re planning at least one more preview before Saturday arrives.

SPF30 updates: Setup begins; a vendor you’ll recognize; the guitar you can bid on now; streaming plans…

With three days until Saturday’s SPF30Sub Pop Records‘ concert-filled 30th anniversary celebration at Alki Beach – we have four more updates:

SETUP BEGINS: Thanks to David Hutchinson for the photos showing stage setup today on both sides of the Alki Bathhouse. Above, west of the Bathhouse, is the Loser Stage; below, to the east, the Flippity-Flop Stage:

Who’s playing when/where was announced two weeks ago; you can find it all fast on the right side of the main SPF30 webpage.

A VENDOR FIRST: The other two stages are Harsh Realm, at 57th/Alki, and Punky, at Whale Tail Park, where you’ll not only find kid-geared music but also this familiar vendor:

C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor) says this will be its first time with a pop-up outside the shop! They’ll be selling cold-brew coffee on Saturday. And another familiar West Seattle company will be nearby – Husky Deli. (We hope to have a full list of vendors for an upcoming update.)

FUNDRAISING GUITAR: Bidding is open online for this one-of-a-kind handmade guitar produced in commemoration of Sub Pop turning 30:

We got a look at it while covering the SPF30 volunteer orientation earlier this week. You can see it on display all week at Thunder Road Guitars (4736 California SW; WSB sponsor) in The Junction. It’s a fundraiser for the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, a beneficiary of SPF30. To bid on it – and to find out more about it – go here.

STREAMING: Can’t (or don’t want to) go on Saturday, but want to catch some of the shows? KEXP has announced a video-streaming schedule, with viewing options including its website and YouTube channel. Go here to see which bands it’s streaming and when.

P.S. In case you missed it – here’s the SPF30 transportation plan (including road closures, parking for motorized and non-motorized vehicles, transit, etc.) as announced Tuesday.

Sub Pop’s SPF30 celebration at Alki Beach: Here are the transportation plans – transit, parking, road closures, more

Now we’re four days away from Sub Pop Records‘ big SPF30 anniversary celebration at Alki Beach – noon-10 pm Saturday (August 11th), with four stages of music (here’s the schedule as announced last month). This afternoon, the final details of how to get there and back, and how to get around the Alki area even if you’re not going. The map above and info below were just made public by Sub Pop:

At this time, we’d like to share important details regarding street closures, public transportation schedules, parking and more.

Firstly and foremostly, PLEASE limit the number of cars coming in and out of West Seattle, don’t drive unless you really have to, and instead use some form of public transportation to get to SPF30!

BUSES
King County Metro Transit has increased frequency for the Route 50 (Alki Service) to operate every 15 minutes.

In addition, the RapidRide C-Line has a couple of extra buses to assist with any overloaded buses, primarily while event-goers leave the Alki Beach area.

WATER TAXI
The King County Water Taxi between downtown Seattle and West Seattle is adding an extra boat with extra runs and extending hours of service.

In addition to the MV Doc Maynard running its regular Saturday service, the Water Taxi plans on running an extra boat (the MV Sally Fox) on the West Seattle route from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 7:30 p.m. 11:30 p.m. These times are when we expect most people to be traveling to, and returning from, the event.

We strongly encourage you to purchase your Water Taxi tickets in advance. You can do so through the Transit GO app. Or use your ORCA card, for a reduced fare!

SHUTTLES
Three free shuttles will run within West Seattle throughout SPF30.
From…
1. SW Alaska St. & 44th Ave. SW at the Metro stop
2. SW Admiral Way and SW Waite St.
3. Harbor Ave. SW in front of Don Armeni Boat Ramp
…to SPF30 at Alki Beach and back.

There will be at least one accessible shuttle for patrons with disabilities on each of these routes.

BIKES & BIKE SHARES
There will be a Bike Corral located at the tennis courts at Whale Tail Park operated by Bike Works.

There will also be bike shares at some strategic locations as well as staged throughout West Seattle. Look for bikes at these locations:

1. Alaska Junction
2. Admiral Junction
3. Port of Seattle Lot
4. Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal
5. Spokane St. Park and Ride
6. Water Taxi

LYFT/UBER
Uber and Lyft will be managing the road closures for the festival in app. It will be best to catch a ride to and from the shuttle stops at the Alaska Junction and in the Admiral Neighborhood

There will be Lyft signage up at the Lyft Pickup/Drop-off zones.

PARKING
Once more, with feeling: please do not drive to SPF30. But, if you must, please carpool, designate a driver and know that we will have a parking lot. The parking fee will be $20. Credit/debit cards and cash are acceptable forms of payment. Location is the 2500 block of Harbor Ave SW across from the 7-11.

From this lot you can either walk approx. 4 min. to Don Armeni Boat Ramp to catch a free shuttle, or rent a bike and ride the Alki Trail to the festival.

The parking lot closes at midnight on the day of the festival (Sat., Aug. 11). Unclaimed vehicles will be towed by noon the next day. Please no Rideshare vehicles.

ACCESSIBLE PARKING
We have accessible parking spots reserved exclusively for patrons with disabilities in two locations. We ask that you display your placard/hang tags when parking. Please note these spots will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

1. On 63rd Ave SW between Admiral Way and Alki Ave SW
2. On Alki Ave SW between 54th Ave SW and 56th Ave SW

Accessible parking hang tags/placards will get you through local access street closures to these parking spots.

ROAD CLOSURES
Alki Ave SW will be closed between 56th Ave SW and 63rd Ave SW.
59th Ave SW will be closed from SW Stevens St. to Alki Ave SW.

There will be a local-access-only closure on Harbor Ave SW at California Way SW. Traffic will be turned back down Harbor Ave SW or diverted up California Way SW.

There will be lots of other local-access-only closures from SW Admiral Way down to Alki Ave SW, as well as a local-access-only closure at Bonair SW and Sunset Ave SW.

There will be festival staff and SPD helping to direct traffic at all of these closures.

5 days to SPF30: Briefing for volunteers who’ll be helping at Saturday’s Sub Pop event on Alki

Just five days until the Sub Pop Records 30th anniversary party at Alki Beach – noon-10 pm next Saturday (August 11th), with 18 bands on four stages (see the schedule here). Tonight, volunteers gathered at the beach for a briefing and T-shirt distribution – here’s what you’ll see them wearing on Saturday:

With the band list and schedule out, the final details yet to come primarily involve the final transportation plan, including road closures, and we’re expecting that tomorrow. It’s been five months since Sub Pop started bringing updates to neighborhood meetings, seven months since SPF30 was announced.
