Good morning! Highlights for today/tonight:

WINGSTOP OPENS AT WESTWOOD VILLAGE: As first reported here Tuesday, this is the “soft-open” day for the Wingstop restaurant that’s been in the works at Westwood Village for more than a year. The company told us noon-ish, but we’ve also heard it could be earlier – regular hours will start daily at 11. (2800 SW Barton)

BLUE ANGELS PRACTICES AND I-90 CLOSURES: Today is the first of four days that the Blue Angels will be in the air for Seafair, and the I-90 bridge will be closed across Lake Washington, which usually means backups on northbound I-5. Today’s closure times are 9:45 am-noon and 1:15-2:40 pm. You can watch the jets take off and land from Boeing Field; they are based just south of the Museum of Flight during their stay here.

SEAFAIR SHIP TOURS: Not in West Seattle but not far! Tours of the Seafair fleet (which sailed past WS on Tuesday) continue today. Including the USS Somerset, which has a story behind what’s visible on its hangar door:

The Somerset, an amphibious transport dock that’s been in service for two years, is named for Somerset County, Pennsylvania, where Flight 93 crashed on 9/11, after its passengers decided to stop the hijackers from getting to their destination – “Let’s roll” is what passenger Todd Beamer said as they began. You can tour the Somerset at Pier 90 (Magnolia), the USS Gridley and USCGC Active at Pier 66, and HMSC Saskatoon from Canada at Pier 69 – see times and other info here.

ELECTION DAY: If you don’t get your ballot into the mail by tonight, it’s just wasted paper, so take a few minutes and vote. SEAFAIR PARADE OF SHIPS: Before the Seafair fleet – two U.S. Navy ships, one Canadian Navy ship, and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter – parades past the downtown waterfront at 1 pm, it passes West Seattle, and it’s always a sight. ONE WEEK UNTIL ELECTION DAY: Vote! The voting ends and vote-counting begins one week from tonight (Augst 2nd) While it’s technically the “primary,” so your vote will shrink the field in various races, it’s also the final decision for two Seattle measures – the Housing Levy and the “elevated downtown waterfront park” initiative. Lots of info here. And if you want to vote without buying postage, the new permanent ballot dropbox is in place along SW Raymond east of 35th SW, by High Point Library.

Welcome to a huge summer Saturday. Here’s a quick roundup of what’s up today/tonight – and please remember that parking restrictions and road closures related to the parade and 5K (California SW, from south of Admiral to south end of The Junction, plus some of the side streets – look closely for signage!) started kicking in at 7 am – bus reroutes too:

FLOAT DODGER 5K: 9:30 am start from Hiawatha Playfield, going down the parade route and back. Also a beer garden at 5K-presenting West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor), where you’ll find last-minute registration starting at 8 am. Costumes encouraged. (2700 California SW)

WEST SEATTLE GRAND PARADE: The parade is presented by the West Seattle Rotary Club Foundation. The two motorcycle drill teams start from California/Lander at 10:30 am; the rest of the parade, with more than 70 groups, individuals, floats, vehicles, bands, etc., at 11 am. This year’s Grand Marshals are The Schmitz Family; the Orville Rummel Community Service Trophy honoree is Clay Eals of the Southwest Seattle Historical Society. The route goes southbound down California, to Edmunds at the south end of the heart of the Junction business district.

KIDDIE PARADE: All kids welcome to be part of this shorter parade right before the main Grand Parade gets to The Junction. Starts at 11 – once the motorcycles have cleared – at California/Genesee; but get to the starting line before that. Parade proceeds to California/Edmunds, and then everybody can get back to their seats for the Grand Parade.

Outside The Junction:

ALKI ART FAIR: First of two days with more than 90 vendors plus two stages of music, and more, 10 am-6 pm, with music continuing until 9 pm. On the Alki promenade by and west of the Bathhouse (60th/Alki); see the AAF home page for details of the free shuttle from The Admiral District.
