P.S. – DOWNTOWN EVENT FEATURING YOUNG WEST SEATTLE WRITERS: If you are, or could be, downtown tonight, you have the chance to cheer for young writers from West Seattle and beyond. Here’s the announcement:

On Tuesday, September 23, the West Seattle community is invited to the Seattle Arts & Lectures’ Writers in the Schools Anthology Reading & Celebration. The Writers in the Schools Program (WITS) places professional local writers in public schools to develop writing skills and spark inspiration. Since 1994, the WITS program in the Seattle area has been helping students discover their own authentic voices. Featuring creative writing by students in last year’s program, this reading by 50 young authors will move the audience to tears, laughter, awe and wild applause.

This year’s anthology includes writing by Chief Sealth High School students Adam Krzeszowski, Shayla Pilarski, Isabella Renz and Harrison Robel; West Seattle High School students Abigail A. Alishio, Lucas Lavoie, Jackson Oehling and Michael Smith; and Lafayette Elementary School students Kenji Brown, Liam Bunting, Parker Campbell, Savannah Joy Faber, Elanor Gunlogson and Gavin Mountry. A number of these students will be among the featured readers.

The readings will take place in the Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall, beginning at 7 PM on September 23. The events are free and open to the public. The young authors will sign copies of the anthology, and a reception will follow, with sweets donated by Cupcake Royale.

11:38 AM UPDATE: Mike Fusco from Chase just called, answering e-mail we sent early this morning to their media-relations division: “Last night, we experienced a small technical glitch that declined some transactions for a short period of time around (9 pm Pacific) … the issue was resolved … we apologize for the inconvenience.” He stressed that it was a “technical glitch,” not any sort of hacking, nor was it scheduled-but-unannounced maintenance.

The streets are closed in the heart of The Junction for the 7th annual West Seattle Car Show – that’s the live SDOT cam view looking north on California from Alaska. And that’s how we start today’s lineup:

WEST SEATTLE CAR SHOW: Officially opens at 10 am along California SW in The Junction. This year’s show is presented by Swedish Automotive and West Seattle Autoworks (both WSB sponsors), in memory of car-show founder Michael Hoffman; the Hell’s Belles club is hosting, with sponsors including Don Swanson Insurance, Les Schwab Tires, WebCami, Courtesy Tire, plus WSB sponsors Ventana Construction, and Tom’s Automotive. LAND SWAP NEAR PUGET PARK? Last month, the city announced a public meeting related to a proposed “land swap” involving parcels of Seattle Parks land near Puget Park, ultimately so that a nearby piece of private land would no longer have to have a driveway through public land. ADMIRAL NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION: 7 pm meeting, The Sanctuary at Admiral. Agenda:

Seattle Department of Transportation will be on hand to present and answer questions about the final design of the pedestrian-safety improvements and new traffic signal for the intersection of 47th Avenue SW and SW Admiral Way. 

Construction is expected to begin before the end of this year and last about 12 weeks. During construction, there will be pedestrian and bicycle detours, and for motor vehicles, lane reductions or partial closures on 47th SW, SW Admiral, and SW Waite.
