West Seattle, Washington
19 Thursday

Thanks to Josh for the photo of the line outside the Admiralty House Antiques liquidation sale, one of today’s highlights from the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar (and elsewhere):
SALE STARTS: As noted again yesterday in our story about its now-retired owner Fred Dau, the Admiralty House Antiques liquidation sale is on, until 4 pm today, 9 am-4 pm each of the next two days. Online previews are here. (2141 California SW)
‘LOVE PARKS’ DAY: Big work party at Lincoln Park, 10 am-2 pm. Pre-registration was requested but we suspect they won’t mind if you just show up. Here’s our preview.
HOUSE INSTALLATION: Maybe you’ve seen the trucks in the Admiral area this morning:

Thanks to Dave and Jane for sharing the photo. We just learned about this last night (thanks to a neighbor who visited our table at the first Hiawatha concert) – the North Seattle company Greenfab is installing a three-story pre-built home near 50th and Waite, where some side streets will be closed as a result, and that’s what’s been trucked in.
MARIJUANA POLICIES: The City Council committee briefing we mentioned earlier this week is at 2 pm today. If you can’t be there, Seattle Channel (cable or online) will be live as usual.
BAND JAM: Big show tonight with at least five marching bands at Southwest Athletic Complex, getting ready for tomorrow night’s Seafair Torchlight Parade. Here’s our most recent preview from early today. Free, but bring money for treats and merchandise that’ll support ACB! (2801 SW Thistle)
SHAKESPEARE AT CAMP LONG: Greenstage presents “King Lear” outdoors at Camp Long, 7 pm – details in our calendar listing. (5200 35th SW)
CHESS AT ARTSWEST: Second and final weekend for the ArtsWest Summer Apprenticeship Program’s presentation of the musical “Chess,” onstage at 7:30 tonight. (4711 California SW)

Another view of the shadows the downtown skyline can cast on West Seattle at sunrise this time of year – though we featured a semi-similar photo here recently, we couldn’t resist this view with the setting moon and one of the fog banks that shrouded our peninsula a few mornings recently. Thanks to Flickr member Zargoman for sharing the photo via the West Seattle Blog group on Flickr. No fog today! Actually, we do have fog on the water today – at least on the west side, and we’re adding Greg‘s photo as proof (maybe you’ve heard the ferry horns!):

(added) And from the northeast-facing shore, this photo from Brian Presser:

NOW to the calendar highlights:
‘DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE’ PUPPET SHOW: 11 am, for ages 2 and up, at Southwest Branch Library. Details here. (35th/Henderson)

Thanks to Gary Jones for sharing his photo of ospreys at Alki Point; it’s prime time for birdwatching at the beach – we saw an osprey and a bald eagle during a brief walk in east Alki on Tuesday. As for what else is up – from the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar for today/tonight:
LOW TIDE: Speaking of walking along Alki (or your favorite beach) – the lowest tide of the day is not as low as a few days ago but the -2.1-foot low tide at 12:37 pm will still make for excellent beach exploration.
TOLLING THE HIGHWAY 99 TUNNEL: Just as “Bertha” gets ready to start digging, an advisory committee is still talking about the tolling issue – what amount of tolling would raise enough money to cover its share of the project budget, while not being so high that too many drivers would divert to other routes. Today’s quarterly meeting of the committee, open to the public, is 3-5 pm (info and agenda here) in the Puget Sound Regional Council conference room. (1011 Western Avenue, Suite 500)
HIGH POINT MARKET GARDEN FARM STAND: 4-7 pm every Wednesday, buy organic produce just steps away from where it was grown. Info in our calendar listing. (32nd/Juneau)
WEST SEATTLE TIMEBANK, 1ST ORIENTATION: Help launch the West Seattle Timebank tonight, by coming to its first orientation meeting, at the Senior Center of West Seattle. Potluck at 6:30, orientation at 7, details and links in our preview from earlier this week. (Oregon/California)

SOUTH PARK BRIDGE UPDATE: Want to see how things are going with the new South Park Bridge? The county presents its fourth program with photos and info at 7 pm tonight, South Park Community Center. (8319 8th Avenue S.)
‘CHESS’ AT ARTSWEST: It’s the second and final week for the ArtsWest Summer Apprenticeship Program’s presentation of the musical “Chess,” onstage at 7:30 tonight. (4711 California SW)

Thanks to Craig Young for the photo of last night’s moonrise (also shared via WSB-FB), taken from Elliott Bay Marina. Moonrise tonight is 9:13 pm, according to the moonrise/moonset/moon-phase section of the WSB West Seattle Weather page. To keep you busy in the meantime:
LOW-LOW TIDE: Not as low as yesterday but close – it’ll be -2.8 feet at 11:50 am – and another great day to get out and explore – gently – if you can! Seattle Aquarium beach naturalists are out now, once again at Constellation Park south of Alki Point and near Colman Pool at Lincoln Park.
YOUTH PROTEST: A demonstration downtown against racial profiling and related issues will include students from Chief Sealth International High School and White Center’s Evergreen Campus, according to a news release sent this morning. They invite other youth to join them outside the King County Courthouse at 1:30 pm; here’s the Facebook event page. (3rd and James, downtown)
WEST SEATTLE TOOL LIBRARY: Reminder that the WS Tool Library now has Tuesday evening hours, if you need to go check out something for a project – 5-8 pm, northeast side of Youngstown Cultural Arts Center. (4408 Delridge Way SW)
JUNCTION NEIGHBORHOOD ORGANIZATION RE-LAUNCH: Tonight’s the night – 6:30 pm at the Senior Center of West Seattle – if you live/work in or around The Junction, come help its community council re-launch. Development is certainly a hot-button issue, but that’s not ALL they’ll tackle:
Have you heard of your neighborhood community organization in the West Seattle Junction and Triangle ? It’s called JuNO- your West Seattle Junction Neighborhood Organization.
There are many topics and concerns about what is happening currently in our Junction and Triangle neighborhood that affect the way we live. Joining us tonight will be Ed Pottharst of the SWDC and the City of Seattle. He will be answering questions and telling our group more about ways the City of Seattle supports neighborhood organizations like JuNO.
Do you have an idea for our neighborhood? Want to kick start a fundraiser for a park or beautify a public area close to your home? Do you have a question about a development near you or a traffic or parking situation that you would like to see resolved? Join us and we can discuss best ways to get things moving.
We hope to see you tonight!

TUESDAY TUNE-UP AT SALTY’S: Independence Guide Dogs will benefit from tonight’s Tuesday Tune-Up event at Salty’s on Alki (WSB sponsor), with music by Victor Janusz and more, starting at 6:30 pm – details here. (1936 Harbor Avenue SW)

Thanks to Eileen for the photo; she was among the West Seattleites in attendance at Saturday’s sendoff for “Bertha,” the Highway 99 tunneling megamachine, which the state plans to launch soon. Her photo shows visitors signing part of the tunnel liner, which will be installed behind “Bertha” as the machine proceeds. On to today; from the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar:
LOW-LOW TIDE: Tide’s out! Seattle Aquarium volunteer beach naturalists are scheduled to be out at Constellation and Lincoln Parks 10 am-1:30 pm. The tide will bottom out at 11:03 am, at -3.1 feet. It was almost that low on Sunday, when we shared this photo via Instagram:
If the photo doesn’t show for you, go here. P.S. You can check tides any time on the WSB Weather page.
SET-BUILDING HELP: If you missed the volunteer-seeking announcement Friday, Twelfth Night Productions is building sets for its upcoming “Guys and Dolls” at West Seattle High School all week long and would appreciate volunteer help; they’re starting work at 10 am. (3000 California SW)
SPECIAL STORYTIME: Melissa at Westwood Village Barnes and Noble, which usually has storytime on Saturdays, sends word of a special one at 11 am today: “We’ll be reading ‘The Day the Crayons Quit,’ a story about what happens when one’s crayons feel unappreciated or overworked. We’ll also be having some treats and some fun with crayons, of course!”
TONIGHT’S NIGHTLIFE: Even on Monday night, there’s something going on; we have three trivia/quiz listings on the calendar.

(July 2012 Jubilee Days fireworks; White Center Now photo by Nick Adams)
Just want to make sure you know about two fireworks shows coming up in the area later this week – maybe you’ll want to go see one or both, or maybe you’ll just want the heads-up on what the “booms” are. Tomorrow night (Wednesday, July 17th), the White Center Jubilee Days fireworks start at dusk at Steve Cox Memorial Park (where the WCJD carnival begins at 3 pm and continues through Sunday, by the way).
Then Saturday night, it’s the fireworks show first mentioned here July 1st – at 10 pm that night (July 20th), about 10 minutes of fireworks will be fired from a barge off the 4500 block of Beach Drive, related to a private celebration on Genesee Hill (though it will of course be publicly visible).
Thanks to “Diver Laura” James for sharing that look at a California sea cucumber in local waters – “underwater dust mop” was her nickname for it, and if you view the video (which shows it, rough cut, in two speeds) you’ll see why. Meantime, a quick look at some of what’s up around West Seattle today/tonight, whatever speed you’re traveling at:
