TRAFFIC ALERTS: Two for today – lane closures on the southbound 1st Avenue South Bridge continue around the clock all weekend, and work is planned all day today at the Delridge/Genesee intersection – but it’s NOT part of the ongoing SDOT/Metro work; SDOT says it’s utility work related to residential development at that corner. ADDED 1:52 PM: Genesee is blocked at Delridge while this work continues. Also – thanks for the tips – the 35th/Roxbury signal is in flashing-red mode.

WEST SEATTLE SATURDAY: March’s first weekend begins

Welcome to the first weekend of March!

TRAFFIC ALERT – 1ST AVE. S. BRIDGE: The first overnight closure should be over by now, but again tonight, the southbound 1st Avenue South Bridge is supposed to close 9 pm-6 am. The West Seattle low bridge will be all-access for all those hours.

SCHOOL BOARD RETREAT: The Seattle Public Schools board has a five-hour online “retreat” today to talk about in-person learning, 8:30 am-1:30 pm. The agenda packet has information on how to watch/listen.

ROSS OPENS: Grand-opening day for the new store at Westwood Village, 9 am-11 pm.

COMPOST GIVEAWAY: 9 am-3 pm (while it lasts), compost will be given away for free, up to half a yard per household, bring your own container and shovel, and wear a mask. North lot at South Seattle College (WSB sponsor), 6000 16th SW.

We start with a second day for these two traffic alerts:

1ST AVENUE SOUTH BRIDGE: WSDOT is scheduled to again close two northbound lanes of the bridge 6 am-noon for grid-deck work.

WEST MARGINAL PAVEMENT REPAIR: The road surface around those old tracks north of the Duwamish Longhouse is being repaired, with city crews scheduled to work 8 am-3:30 pm again today.

Welcome to the weekend! We start with (updated) three travel alerts:

1ST AVENUE SOUTH BRIDGE: WSDOT is closing two northbound lanes of the bridge 6 am-noon today and tomorrow for grid-deck work.

WEST MARGINAL PAVEMENT REPAIR: The road surface around those old tracks north of the Duwamish Longhouse is going to be fixed, with city crews working 8 am-3:30 pm each day this weekend and next and possibly the weekend after that.

(added) CITY LIGHT WORK: Headed eastbound in the Roxbury corridor late this morning, we noticed City Light crews blocking the outside SB/WB lane of 1st Ave. S./Olson (uphill from the 509 ramps). Unannounced work but there have been longterm streetlight outages there; we’ll check with SCL on Monday.

SOUTHWEST LITTLE LEAGUE SIGNUPS: Delayed a week because of the snow, noon-2 pm, eligible players can sign up for Southwest Little League at the Log Cabin at Steve Cox Memorial Park, 1321 SW 102nd in White Center.

COMMUNITY CLEANUP: You’re invited to help clean up around the bridge and West Marginal Way this afternoon, 1-4 pm, equipment provided. Here’s all the info, including where to go and how to RSVP.

ENDOLYNE JOE’S REOPENS: The restaurant at 9261 45th SW in Fauntleroy reopened today, 11 am-8 pm, with curbside service and limited indoor dining. The new menu includes $5 specials for those short on cash, and ways for those who aren’t to help cover others’ costs.

WEST MARGINAL WAY OPEN HOUSE: At the heart of SDOT‘s proposal for West Marginal Way north of the Duwamish Longhouse is a two-way protected bicycle lane in what’s currently the outside southbound motor-vehicle lane. Thanks to Laura Thomas for the photo of a squirrel taking refuge in a birdhouse. Today it should be safe to emerge – warming into the upper 40s, close to normal for this time of year, as what’s left of the snow continues to melt. Notes for today/tonight:

REMINDER, GARBAGE/RECYCLING DELAYED ONE DAY ALL WEEK: Waste Management is scheduled to pick up Monday customers today, which means Tuesday customers will be on Wednesday, etc.

CITY COUNCIL: Their first meetings of the week are also delayed a day, because of Monday’s holiday; the 9:30 am “briefing meeting” is under way now, and the “full council” meeting is at 2 pm – agendas are here, with information on commenting/viewing.

GOVERNOR’S BRIEFING: 2:30 pm, Gov. Jay Inslee gives his next briefing on the pandemic, with media Q&A. You can watch the live stream here.

DEMONSTRATION: Organizer Scott will lead the twice-weekly streetcorner sign-waving in support of Black lives, 4-6 pm at 16th/Holden. Signs available if you can’t bring your own.

CITY ATTORNEY AT WEST SEATTLE CRIME PREVENTION COUNCIL: The monthly meeting to hear from and talk with West Seattle police has a special guest tonight, just announced: City Attorney Pete Holmes (who recently announced he is running for re-election). STATE HEALTH OFFICIALS’ BRIEFING: The weekly COVID-19 briefing with state Secretary of Health Dr. Umair Shah and others is online at 1 pm; you can watch it here.
